Atoms can spontaneously form spatially-ordered structures in optical resonators when they are transversally driven by lasers. This occurs when the laser intensity exceeds a threshold value and results from the mechanical forces on the atoms associated with superradiant scattering into the cavity mode. We treat the atomic motion semiclassically and show that, while the onset of spatial ordering depends on the intracavity-photon number, the stationary momentum distribution is a Maxwell-Boltzmann whose width is determined by the rate of photon losses. Above threshold, the dynamics is characterized by two time scales: after a violent relaxation, the system slowly reaches the stationary state over time scales exceeding the cavity lifetime by several orders of magnitude. In this transient regime the atomic momenta form non-Gaussian metastable distributions, which emerge from the interplay between the long-range dispersive and dissipative mechanical forces of light. We argue that the dynamics of selforganization of atoms in cavities offers a testbed for studying the statistical mechanics of long-range interacting systems.
The manipulation of many-body systems often involves time-dependent forces that cause unwanted heating. One strategy to suppress heating is to use time-periodic (Floquet) forces at large driving frequencies. For quantum spin systems with bounded spectra, it was shown rigorously that the heating rate is exponentially small in the driving frequency. Recently, the exponential suppression of heating has also been observed in an experiment with ultracold atoms, realizing a periodically driven Bose-Hubbard model. This model has an unbounded spectrum and, hence, is beyond the reach of previous theore…
We propose an approach to simultaneously excite two atoms by using cavity-assisted Raman process in combination with cavity photon-mediated interaction. The system consists of a two-level atom and a $Λ$-type or V-type three-level atom, which are coupled together with a cavity mode. Having derived the effective Hamiltonian, we find that under certain circumstances a single photon can simultaneously excite two atoms. In addition, multiple photons and even a classical field can also simultaneously excite two atoms. As an example, we show a scheme to realize our proposal in a circuit QED setup, wh…
Resolved sideband cooling provides a crucial step in subrecoil cooling the trapped atoms toward their motional ground state, which is essential in atom-based quantum technologies. Here we present an enhanced dark-state sideband cooling in trapped atoms utilizing photon-mediated dipole-dipole interactions among them. By placing the atoms at the magic interparticle distances, we manifest an outperformed cooling behavior in the target atom, which surpasses the limit that a single atom permits. We further investigate various atomic configurations in a multiatom setup with a laser detuning and diff…

A hybrid quantum system consisting of spatially separated two-level atoms is studied. Two atoms do not interact directly, but they are coupled via an intermediate system which is consisting of a superconducting flux qubit interacting with a mechanical and an electrical resonator which are coupled to one of the atoms. Moreover, the superconducting flux qubit is driven by a classical microwave field. Applying the adiabatic elimination an effective Hamiltonian for the atomic subsystem is obtained. Our results demonstrate that the entanglement degradation decay as well as the fidelity decay in the…
We analyze the requirements for fault-tolerant quantum computation with atom-atom gates based on cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED) mediated by a photon with a finite pulse length. For short photon pulses, the distorted shape of the reflected pulses from the cQED system is a serious error source. We optimize the cQED system parameters to minimize the infidelity due to the shape distortion and the photon losses in a well-balanced manner for the fault-tolerant scheme using probabilistic gates [H. Goto and K. Ichimura, Phys. Rev. A 80, 040303(R) (2009)]. Our optimization greatly relaxes the re…
We theoretically investigate the transport properties of a weak coherent input field scattered by an ensemble of $Λ$-type atoms coupled to a one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide. In our model, the atoms are randomly located in the lattice along the crystal axis. We analyze the transmission spectrum mediated by the tunable long-range atomic interactions, and observe the highest-energy dip. The results show that the highest-energy dip location is associated with the number of the atoms, which provides an accurate measuring tool for the emitter-waveguide system. We also quantify the influen…
Quantum logic gates are fundamental building blocks of quantum computers. Their integration into quantum networks requires strong qubit coupling to network channels, as can be realized with neutral atoms and optical photons in cavity quantum electrodynamics. Here we demonstrate that the long-range interaction mediated by a flying photon performs a gate between two stationary atoms inside an optical cavity from which the photon is reflected. This single step executes the gate in $2\,\mathrm{μs}$. We show an entangling operation between the two atoms by generating a Bell state with 76(2)% fideli…
In this paper, we identify a many-particle phonon expectation value $ζ$ with the ability to induce collective dynamics in a non-interacting atomic gas inside an optical cavity. We then propose to utilise this expectation value to enhance the laser cooling of many atoms through a cyclic two-stage process which consists of cooling and displacement stages. During cooling stages, short laser pulses are applied. These use $ζ$ as a resource and decrease the vibrational energy of the atomic gas by a fixed amount. Subsequent displacement stages use the asymmetry of the trapping potential to replenish …
Waveguide quantum electrodynamics studies photon-mediated interactions of quantum emitters in a one-dimensional radiation channel. Although signatures of such interactions have been observed previously in a variety of physical systems, observation of coherent cooperative dynamics has been obscured by radiative decay of atoms into the waveguide. Employing transmon qubits as artificial atoms coupled to a microwave coplanar waveguide, here we observe dynamical oscillations in an open system where a designated probe qubit interacts with an entangled dark state of an array of qubits which effective…
Quantum simulators employing cold atoms are among the most promising approaches to tackle quantum many-body problems. Nanophotonic structures are widely employed to engineer the bandstructure of light and are thus investigated as a means to tune the interactions between atoms placed in their vicinity. A key shortcoming of this approach is that excitations can decay into free photons, limiting the coherence of such quantum simulators. Here, we overcome this challenge by proposing to use a simple cubic three-dimensional array of atoms to produce an omnidirectional bandgap for light and show that…
We theoretically study the optical properties of an ensemble of two-level atoms coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. In our model, the atoms are randomly located in the lattice sites along the one-dimensional waveguide. The results reveal that the optical transport properties of the atomic ensemble are influenced by the lattice constant and the filling factor of the lattice sites. We also focus on the atomic mirror configuration and quantify the effect of the inhomogeneous broadening in atomic resonant transition on the scattering spectrum. Furthermore, we find that initial bunching and per…
We show that an atom can be coupled to a mechanical oscillator via quantum vacuum fluctuations of a cavity field enabling energy transfer processes between them. In a hybrid quantum system consisting of a cavity resonator with a movable mirror and an atom, these processes are dominated by two pair-creation mechanisms: the counterrotating (atom-cavity system) and dynamical Casimir interaction terms (optomechanical system). Because of these two pair-creation mechanisms, the resonant atom-mirror coupling is the result of high-order virtual processes with different transition paths well described …
Engineering strong interactions between quantum systems is essential for many phenomena of quantum physics and technology. Typically, strong coupling relies on short-range forces or on placing the systems in high-quality electromagnetic resonators, restricting the range of the coupling to small distances. We use a free-space laser beam to strongly couple a collective atomic spin and a micromechanical membrane over a distance of one meter in a room-temperature environment. The coupling is highly tunable and allows the observation of normal-mode splitting, coherent energy exchange oscillations, …
We propose a theoretical scheme to achieve strong photon blockade via a single atom in cavity. By utilizing optical Stark shift, the dressed-state splitting between higher and lower branches is enhanced, which results in significant increasing for lower (higher) branch and decreasing for higher (lower) branch at the negative (positive) Stark shift, and dominates the time-evolution of photon number oscillations as well. Furthermore, the two-photon excitation is suppressed via quantum interference under optimal phase and Rabi frequency of an external microwave field. It is shown that the interpl…
Generation of field mediated three qubit entangled state shared by Alice and Bob
S. Kim,J.
Neutral atom platform has become an attractive choice to study the science of quantum information and quantum simulation, where intense efforts have been devoted to the entangling processes between individual atoms. For the development of this area, two-qubit controlled-PHASE gate via Rydberg blockade is one of the most essential elements. Recent theoretical studies have suggested the advantages of introducing non-trivial waveform modulation into the gate protocol, which is anticipated to improve its performance towards the next stage. We report our recent experimental results in realizing a t…
A central challenge for many quantum technologies concerns the generation of large entangled states of individually addressable quantum memories. Here, we show that percolation theory allows the rapid production of arbitrarily large graph states by heralded photonic entanglement in a lattice of atomic memories. This approach can greatly reduce the time required to produce large cluster resource states for quantum information processing, including states required for universal one-way quantum computing. This reduction puts our architecture in an operational regime where demonstrated collection,…
While the recently realized dissipative time crystal in a laser-pumped atom-cavity system in the experiment of Keßler et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 043602 (2021)] is qualitatively consistent with a theoretical description in an idealized limit, here, we investigate the stability of this dissipative time crystal in the presence of an inhomogeneous potential provided by a harmonic trap, and competing short- and infinite-range interactions. We note that these features are ubiquitous in any realization of atom-cavity systems. By mapping out the dynamical phase diagram and studying how it is modifi…
We investigate long-range pairing interactions between ultracold fermionic atoms confined in an optical lattice which are mediated by the coupling to a cavity. In the absence of other perturbations, we find three degenerate pairing symmetries for a two-dimensional square lattice. By tuning a weak local atomic interaction via a Feshbach resonance or by tuning a weak magnetic field, the superfluid system can be driven from a topologically trivial s-wave to topologically ordered, chiral superfluids containing Majorana edge states. Our work points out a novel path towards the creation of exotic su…
The exchange of virtual photons between quantum optical emitters in cavity QED or quantum nanophotonic setups induces interactions between them which can be harnessed for quantum information and simulation purposes. So far, these interactions have been mostly characterized for two-level emitters, which restrict their application to engineering quantum gates among qubits or simulating spin-1/2 quantum many-body models. Here, we show how to harness multi-level emitters with several optical transitions to engineer a wide class of photon-mediated interactions between effective spin-1 systems. We c…
