A variational equation of the third order in three-dimensional space is proposed which describes autoparallel curves of some connection.
We consider the second variational derivative of a given gauge-natural invariant Lagrangian taken with respect to (prolongations of) vertical parts of gauge-natural lifts of infinitesimal principal automorphisms. By requiring such a second variational derivative to vanish, {\em via} the Second Noether Theorem we find that a covariant strongly conserved current is canonically associated with the deformed Lagrangian obtained by contracting Euler--Lagrange equations of the original Lagrangian with (prolongations of) vertical parts of gauge-natural lifts of infinitesimal principal automorphisms ly…

For For a given PDE system, or an exterior differential system possessing a Lie group of internal symmetries the orbit reduction procedure is introduced. It is proved that the solutions of the reduced exterior differential system are in one-to-one correspondence with the moduli space of regular solutions of the prolongation of the original system. The isomorphism between the local characteristic cohomology of the reduced unconstrained jet space and the Lie algebra cohomology of the symmetry group is established. The group-invariant Euler-Lagrange equations of an invariant variational problem a…
Systems of ordinary differential equations (or dynamical forms in Lagrangian mechanics), induced by embeddings of smooth fibered manifolds over one-dimensional basis, are considered in the class of variational equations. For a given non-variational system, conditions assuring variationality (the Helmholtz conditions) of the induced system with respect to a submanifold of a Euclidean space are studied, and the problem of existence of these "variational submanifolds" is formulated in general and solved for second-order systems. The variational sequence theory on sheaves of differential forms is …
We study variational systems for space curves, for which the Lagrangian or action principle has a Euclidean symmetry, using the Rotation Minimising frame, also known as the Normal, Parallel or Bishop frame. Such systems have previously been studied using the Frenet-Serret frame. The Rotation Minimising frame has many advantages, however, and can be used to study a wider class of examples. We achieve our results by extending the powerful symbolic invariant calculus for Lie group based moving frames, to the Rotation Minimising frame case. To date, the invariant calculus has been developed for fr…
We discuss a system of third order PDEs for strictly convex smooth functions on domains of Euclidean space. We argue that it may be understood as a closure of sorts of the first order prolongation of a family of second order PDEs. We describe explicitly its real analytic solutions and all the solutions which satisfy a genericity condition; we also describe a family of non-generic solutions which has an application to Poisson geometry and Kahler structures on toric varieties. Our methods are geometric: we use the theory of Hessian metrics and symmetric spaces to link the analysis of the system …
Noether's First Theorem yields conservation laws for Lagrangians with a variational symmetry group. The explicit formulae for the laws are well known and the symmetry group is known to act on the linear space generated by the conservation laws. In recent work the authors showed the mathematical structure behind both the Euler-Lagrange system and the set of conservation laws, in terms of the differential invariants of the group action and a moving frame. In this paper we demonstrate that the knowledge of this structure considerably eases finding the extremal curves for variational problems inva…
Let $Ω$ be an open subset of a Stein manifold $Σ$ and let $M$ be its boundary. It is well known that $M$ inherits a natural contact structure. In this paper we consider a family of variational functionals $F_\varepsilon$ defined by the sum of two terms: a Dirichlet-type energy associated with a sub-Riemannian structure in $Ω$ and a potential term on the boundary $M$. We prove that the functionals $F_\varepsilon$ $Γ$-converge to the intrinsic perimeter in $M$ associated with its contact structure. Similar results have been obtained in the Euclidean space by Alberti, Bouchitté, Seppecher. We str…
The variational principle and the corresponding differential equation for geodesic circles in two dimensional (pseudo)-Riemannian space are being discovered. The relationship with the physical notion of uniformly accelerated relativistic particle is emphasized. The known form of spin-curvature interaction emerges due to the presence of second order derivatives in the expression for the Lagrange function. The variational equation itself reduces to the unique invariant variational equation of constant Frenet curvature in two dimensional (pseudo)-Euclidean geometry.
It is proved that the set of geodesic circles in two dimensions may be given a variational description and the explicit form of it is presented. In the limit case of the Euclidean geometry a certain claim of uniqueness of such description is proved. A formal notion of 'spin' force is discovered as a by-product of the variation procedure involving the acceleration.
This paper addresses the so-called conformal capacities in $\mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 3$, through comparing three existing definitions (due to Betsakos, Colesanti-Cuoghi, Anderson-Vamananmurthy-Fuglede respectively) and studying their associated iso-capacitary inequalities with connection to half-diameter, mean-width, mean-curvature and ADM-mass, Hadamard type variational formula, Minkowski type problem, and Yau type problem.
We establish area bounds for two-dimensional immersions in R^3 and R^n. Namely, for μ-stable immersions in R^3 (R^n), for graphs in $\mathbb R^3$ which solve quasilinear equations in divergence form, and for graphs which are critical for Fermat-type variational problems in R^n.
In the present paper we construct differential invariants for generic rank 2 vector distributions on n-dimensional manifold. In the case n=5 (the first case containing functional parameters) E. Cartan found in 1910 the covariant fourth-order tensor invariant for such distributions, using his "reduction-prolongation" procedure. After Cartan's work the following questions remained open: first the geometric reason for existence of Cartan's tensor was not clear; secondly it was not clear how to generalize this tensor to other classes of distributions; finally there were no explicit formulas for co…
On a convex body in a Euclidean space, we introduce a new variational formulation for its Funk metric, a Finsler metric compatible with the tautological Finsler structure of the convex body. We generalize the metric on Teichmuller spaces with the Weil-Petersson distance function. A set of similarities the resulting metric structure shares with Thurston's asymmetric metric is noted.

We construct Yang-Mills connections on SO(n)-bundles over spheres equipped with the Euclidean metric. We use a cohomogeneity one group action on the bundle to reduce the Yang-Mills-equation to a system of ordinary differential equations. The system is shown to have solutions by variational methods, using ideas from harmonic map theory. Examples include Yang-Mills connections on each of the countably many principal SO(6)-bundles over $S^6$, and countably many Yang-Mills connections on $TS^n$ for $n\in\{5,...,9\}$.
The present paper extends the classical second-order variational problem of Herglotz type to the more general context of the Euclidean sphere S^n following variational and optimal control approaches. The relation between the Hamiltonian equations and the generalized Euler-Lagrange equations is established. This problem covers some classical variational problems posed on the Riemannian manifold S^n such as the problem of finding cubic polynomials on S^n. It also finds applicability on the dynamics of the simple pendulum in a resistive medium.
We classify all rotational surfaces in Euclidean space whose principal curvatures $κ_1$ and $κ_2$ satisfy the linear relation $κ_1=aκ_2+b$, where $a$ and $b$ are two constants. We give a variational characterization of these surfaces in terms of its generating curve. As a consequence of our classification, we find closed (embedded and not embedded) surfaces and periodic (embedded and not embedded) surfaces with a geometric behaviour similar to Delaunay surfaces.
A triangulated piecewise-linear minimal surface in Euclidean 3-space defined using a variational characterization is critical for area amongst all continuous piecewise-linear variations with compact support that preserve the simplicial structure. We explicitly construct examples of such surfaces that are embedded and are periodic in three independent directions of Euclidean 3-space.
A stationary rotating surface is a compact surface in Euclidean space whose mean curvature $H$ at each point $x$ satisfies $2H(x)=a r^2+b$, where $r$ is the distance from $x$ to a fixed straight-line $L$, and $a$ and $b$ are constants. These surfaces are solutions of a variational problem that describes the shape of a drop of incompressible fluid in equilibrium by the action of surface tension when it rotates about $L$ with constant angular velocity. The effect of gravity is neglected. In this paper we study the geometric configurations of such surfaces, focusing the relationship between the g…
Secondary Calculus is a formal replacement for differential calculus on the space of solutions of a system of possibly non-linear partial differential equations and it is essentially due to Alexandre M. Vinogradov and his collaborators. Many coordinate free properties of PDEs find their natural place in Secondary Calculus including: symmetries and conservation laws, variational principles and the coordinate free aspects of the calculus of variations, recursion operators and Hamiltonian structures, etc. The building blocks of this language are horizontal cohomologies of diffieties, i.e. infinit…
J. Eells and L. Lemaire introduced k-harmonic maps, and Wang Shaobo showed the first variational formula. When, k=2, it is called biharmonic maps (2-harmonic maps). There have been extensive studies in the area. In this paper, we consider the relationship between biharmonic maps and k-harmonic maps, and show non-existence theorem of 3-harmonic maps. We also give the definition of k-harmonic submanifolds of Euclidean spaces, and study k-harmonic curve in Euclidean spaces. Futhermore, we give a conjecture for k-harmonic submanifolds of Euclidean spaces.
Manifold-valued data naturally arises in medical imaging. In cognitive neuroscience, for instance, brain connectomes base the analysis of coactivation patterns between different brain regions on the analysis of the correlations of their functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) time series - an object thus constrained by construction to belong to the manifold of symmetric positive definite matrices. One of the challenges that naturally arises consists of finding a lower-dimensional subspace for representing such manifold-valued data. Traditional techniques, like principal component analysis…

Let $f:M\ra \erre^{m+1}$ be an isometrically immersed hypersurface. In this paper, we exploit recent results due to the authors in \cite{bimari} to analyze the stability of the differential operator $L_r$ associated with the $r$-th Newton tensor of $f$. This appears in the Jacobi operator for the variational problem of minimizing the $r$-mean curvature $H_r$. Two natural applications are found. The first one ensures that, under the mild condition that the integral of $H_r$ over geodesic spheres grows sufficiently fast, the Gauss map meets each equator of $\esse^m$ infinitely many times. The se…
