The swimming behavior of bacteria and other microorganisms is sensitive to the physical properties of the fluid in which they swim. Mucus, biofilms, and artificial liquid-crystalline solutions are all examples of fluids with some degree of anisotropy that are also commonly encountered by bacteria. In this article, we study how liquid-crystalline order affects the swimming behavior of a model swimmer. The swimmer is a one-dimensional version of G. I. Taylor's swimming sheet: an infinite line undulating with small-amplitude transverse or longitudinal traveling waves. The fluid is a two-dimensional hexatic liquid-crystalline film. We calculate the power dissipated, swimming speed, and flux of fluid entrained as a function of the swimmer's waveform as well as properties of the hexatic film, such as the rotational and shear viscosity, the Frank elastic constant, and the anchoring strength. The departure from isotropic behavior is greatest for large rotational viscosity and weak anchoring boundary conditions on the orientational order at the swimmer surface. We even find that if the rotational viscosity is large enough, the transverse-wave swimmer moves in the opposite direction relative to a swimmer in an isotropic fluid.
We find that both continuous and discontinuous hexatic-liquid transitions can happen in the melting of two-dimensional solids of soft-core disks. For three typical model systems, Hertzian, harmonic, and Gaussian-core models, we observe the same scenarios. These systems exhibit reentrant crystallization (melting) with a maximum melting temperature $T_m$ happening at a crossover density $ρ_m$. The hexatic-liquid transition at a density smaller than $ρ_m$ is discontinuous. Liquid and hexatic phases coexist in a density interval, which becomes narrower with increasing temperature and tends to vani…
We report results from X-ray scattering studies of the angular structure factor of liquid crystal hexatic-B films. According to the sixfold rotational symmetry of the hexatic-B phase, its characteristic scattering splits into six reflections. The shape of the radial and angular cross-sections of these reflections and their temperature evolution are analyzed. We find that over a wide temperature range of the hexatic-B phase existence the angular profiles of the in-plane X-ray scattering are well fitted by the Voigt function, which is a convolution of the Gaussian and Lorentzian functions. This …
X-ray diffraction studies of the bond-orientational order in the hexatic-B phase of 75OBC and 3(10)OBC compounds are presented. The temperature evolution of an angular profile of a single diffraction peak is analyzed. Close to the hexatic-B-smectic-A transition these profiles can be approximated by the Gaussian function. At lower temperatures in the hexatic-B phase the profiles are better fitted by the Voigt function. Theoretical analysis of the width of diffraction peaks in three-dimentional (3D) hexatics is performed on the basis of the effective Hamiltonian introduced by Aharony and Kardar.…
We report on X-ray studies of freely suspended hexatic films of three different liquid crystal compounds. By applying angular X-ray cross-correlation analysis (XCCA) to the measured diffraction patterns the parameters of the bond-orientational (BO) order in the hexatic phase were directly determined. The temperature evolution of the BO order parameters was analyzed on the basis of the multicritical scaling theory (MCST). Our results confirmed the validity of the MCST in the whole temperature range of existence of the hexatic phase for all three compounds. The temperature dependence of the BO o…
Monolayer and two-dimensional (2D) systems exhibit rich phase behavior, compared with 3D systems, in particular, due to the hexatic phase playing a central role in melting scenarios. The attraction range is known to affect critical gas-liquid behavior (liquid-liquid in protein and colloidal systems), but the effect of attraction on melting in 2D systems remains unstudied systematically. Here, we reveal how the attraction range affects the phase diagrams and melting scenarios in a 2D system. Using molecular dynamics simulations we considered the generalized Lennard-Jones system with a fixed rep…
We study numerically the role of hydrodynamics in the liquid-hexatic transition of active colloids at intermediate activity, where motility induced phase separation (MIPS) does not occur. We show that in the case of active Brownian particles (ABP), the critical density of the transition decreases upon increasing the particle's mass, enhancing ordering, while self-propulsion has the opposite effect in the activity regime considered. Active hydrodynamic particles (AHP), instead, undergo the liquid-hexatic transition at higher values of packing fraction $ϕ$ than the corresponding ABP, suggesting …
We report the structure of transient fluctuations in the liquid phase of a two-dimensional system that exhibits several ordered phases with different symmetries. The density-temperature phase diagram of the system studied, composed of particles with a repulsive shouldered soft-core pair interaction, has regions with stable liquid and hexatic phases, a square solid phase, two separate hexagonal solid phases and a quasi-crystalline phase with 12-fold symmetry. The structure of a fluctuation was determined by computing the same-time aperture cross correlation function of particle configurations. …
Liquid water is not only of obvious importance but also extremely intriguing, displaying many anomalies that still challenge our understanding of such an a priori simple system. The same is true when looking at nanoconfined water: The liquid between constituents in a cell is confined to such dimensions, and there is already evidence that such water can behave very differently from its bulk counterpart. A striking finding has been reported from computer simulations for two-dimensionally confined water: The liquid displays continuous or discontinuous melting depending on its density. In order to…

The hard disc system plays a fundamental role in the study of two-dimensional matters [1-3]. High-precision compressibility data from computer simulations have been reported for all the phases and phase transition regions [4-15]. In particular, Bernard and Krauth (Phys. Rev. Lett., 107, 155704, 2011) [10] presented a complete and accurate picture of the phase transitions of the hard disc system with simulation results. However, thorough descriptions of the system depend on analytical equations of state (EoS) over the entire density range. While majority of EoS published are for the stable flui…
We provide a quantitative analysis of all kinds of topological defects present in 2D passive and active repulsive disk systems. We show that the passage from the solid to the hexatic is driven by the unbinding of dislocations. Instead, although we see dissociation of disclinations as soon as the liquid phase appears, extended clusters of defects largely dominate below the solid-hexatic critical line. The latter percolate at the hexatic-liquid transition in continuous cases or within the coexistence region in discontinuous ones, and their form gets more ramified for increasing activity.
With the help of molecular dynamics simulations we study an ensemble of active dumbbells in purely repulsive interaction. We derive the phase diagram in the density-activity plane and we characterise the various phases with liquid, hexatic and solid character. The analysis of the structural and dynamical properties, such as enstrophy, mean square displacement, polarisation, and correlation functions, shows the continuous character of liquid and hexatic phases in the coexisting region when the activity is increased starting from the passive limit.
We provide a comprehensive quantitative analysis of localized and extended topological defects in the steady state of 2D passive and active repulsive Brownian disk systems. We show that, both in and out-of-equilibrium, the passage from the solid to the hexatic is driven by the unbinding of dislocations, in quantitative agreement with the KTHNY singularity. Instead, although disclinations dissociate as soon as the liquid phase appears, extended clusters of defects largely dominate below the solid-hexatic critical line. The latter percolate in the liquid phase very close to the hexatic-liquid tr…
We formulate a comprehensive hydrodynamic theory of two-dimensional liquid crystals with generic $p-$fold rotational symmetry, also known as $p-$atics, of which mematics $(p=2)$ and hexatics $(p=6)$ are the two best known examples. Previous hydrodynamic theories of $p-$atics are characrerized by continuous ${\rm O}(2)$ rotational symmetry, which is higher than the discrete rotational symmetry of $p-$atic phases. By contrast, here we demonstrate that the discrete rotational symmetry allows the inclusion of additional terms in the hydrodynamic equations, which, in turn, lead to novel phenomena, …
Biological processes such as embryogenesis, wound healing and cancer progression, crucially rely on the ability of epithelial cells to coordinate their mechanical activity over length scales order of magnitudes larger than the typical cellular size. While regulated by various signalling pathways, it has recently become evident that this behavior can additionally hinge on a minimal toolkit of physical mechanisms, of which liquid crystal order is the most prominent example. Yet, experimental and theoretical studies have given so far inconsistent results in this respect: whereas nematic order is …
The locomotion and design of microswimmers are topical issues of current fundamental and applied research. In addition to numerous living and artificial active microswimmers, a passive microswimmer was identified only recently: a soft, Lambda-shaped, non-buoyant particle propagates in a shaken liquid of zero-mean velocity [Jo et al. Phys. Rev. E 94, 063116 (2016)]. We show that this novel passive locomotion mechanism works for realistic non-buoyant, asymmetric Janus microcapsules as well. According to our analytical approximation, this locomotion requires a symmetry breaking caused by differen…
Colloidal particles in liquid crystals tend to induce topological defects and distortions of the molecular alignment within the surrounding anisotropic host medium, which results in elasticity-mediated interactions not accessible to their counterparts within isotropic fluid hosts. Such particle-induced coronae of perturbed nematic order are highly responsive to external electric fields, even when the uniformly aligned host medium away from particles exhibits no response to fields below the realignment threshold. Here we harness the non-reciprocal nature of these facile electric responses to de…

This paper presents an overview and discussion of magnetocapillary self-assemblies. New results are presented, in particular concerning the possible development of future applications. These self-organizing structures possess the notable ability to move along an interface when powered by an oscillatory, uniform magnetic field. The system is constructed as follows. Soft magnetic particles are placed on a liquid interface, and submitted to a magnetic induction field. An attractive force due to the curvature of the interface around the particles competes with an interaction between magnetic dipol…
The dynamics of self-locomotion of active particles in aligned or liquid crystalline fluids strongly deviates from that in simple isotropic media. We explore the long-time dynamics of a swimmer moving in a three-dimensional smectic liquid crystal and find that the mean-square displacement (MSD) transverse to the director exhibits a distinct logarithmic tail at long times. The scaling is distinctly different from that in an isotropic or nematic fluid and hints at the subtle but important role of the director fluctuation spectrum in governing the long-time motility of active particles. Our findi…
In this paper, we speculate on a possible application of Liquid Crystal Elastomers to the field of soft robotics. In particular, we study a concept for limbless locomotion that is amenable to miniaturisation. For this purpose, we formulate and solve the evolution equations for a strip of nematic elastomer, subject to directional frictional interactions with a flat solid substrate, and cyclically actuated by a spatially uniform, time-periodic stimulus (e.g., temperature change). The presence of frictional forces that are sensitive to the direction of sliding transforms reciprocal, 'breathing-li…
Active elastomeric liquid crystal particles with initial cylindrical shapes are obtained by means of soft lithography and polymerization in a strong magnetic field. Gold nanocrystals infiltrated into these particles mediate energy transfer from laser light to heat, so that the inherent coupling between the temperature-dependent order and shape allows for dynamic morphing of these particles and well-controlled stable shapes. Continuous changes of particle shapes are followed by their spontaneous realignment and transformations of director structures in the surrounding cholesteric host, as well …
