Understanding differential rotation of Sun-like stars is of great importance for insight into the angular momentum transport in these stars. One means of gaining such information is that of asteroseismology. By a forward modeling approach we analyze in a qualitative manner the impact of different differential rotation profiles on the splittings of p-mode oscillation frequencies. The optimum modes for inference on differential rotation are identified along with the best value of the stellar inclination angle. We find that in general it is not likely that asteroseismology can be used to make an unambiguous distinction between a rotation profile such as, e.g., a conical Sun-like profile and a cylindrical profile. In addition, it seems unlikely that asteroseismology of Sun-like stars will result in inferences on the radial profile of the differential rotation, such as can be done for, e.g., red giants. At best one could possibly obtain the sign of the radial differential rotation gradient. Measurements of the extent of the latitudinal differential from frequency splitting are, however, more promising. One very interesting aspect that could likely be tested from frequency splittings is whether the differential rotation is solar-like or anti-solar-like in nature, in the sense that a solar-like profile has an equator rotating faster than the poles.
We perform photometric (the Lomb-Scargle periodogram, autocorrelation, and wavelet) and asteroseismic analyses of 92 Kepler solar-like main-sequence stars to understand the reliability of the measured stellar rotation periods. We focus on the 70 stars without reported stellar companions, and classify them into four groups according to the quarter-to-quarter variance of the Lomb-Scargle period and the precision of the asteroseismic period. We present detailed individual comparison among photometric and asteroseismic constraints for these stars. We find that most of our targets exhibit significa…
In previous work we identified six Sun-like stars observed by Kepler with exceptionally clear asteroseismic signatures of rotation. Here, we show that five of these stars exhibit surface variability suitable for measuring rotation. In order to further constrain differential rotation, we compare the rotation periods obtained from light-curve variability with those from asteroseismology. The two rotation measurement methods are found to agree within uncertainties, suggesting that radial differential rotation is weak, as is the case for the Sun. Furthermore, we find significant discrepancies betw…
We have discovered rotationally split core g-mode triplets and surface p-mode triplets and quintuplets in a terminal age main sequence A star, KIC 11145123, that shows both $δ$ Sct p-mode pulsations and $γ$ Dor g-mode pulsations. This gives the first robust determination of the rotation of the deep core and surface of a main sequence star, essentially model-independently. We find its rotation to be nearly uniform with a period near 100 d, but we show with high confidence that the surface rotates slightly faster than the core. A strong angular momentum transfer mechanism must be operating to pr…
The influence of rotational mixing on the global parameters and asteroseismic properties of red giant stars is reviewed. While red giants are generally characterised by low surface rotational velocities, they may have been rotating much more rapidly during the main sequence, so that the rotational history of a star has a large impact on its properties during the red giant phase. For stars massive enough to ignite helium burning in non-degenerate conditions, rotational mixing leads to a significant increase of the stellar luminosity and shifts the location of the core helium burning phase to a …
The Rossiter-McLaughlin effect observed for transiting exoplanets often requires prior knowledge of the stellar projected equatorial rotational velocity. This is usually provided by measuring the broadening of spectral lines, however this method has uncertainties as lines are also broadened by velocity fields in the stellar photosphere known as macroturbulence. We have estimated accurate rotational velocity values from asteroseismic analyses of main sequence stars observed by Kepler. The rotational frequency splittings of the detected solar-like oscillations of these stars are determined large…
Aims: The effects of rotation and magnetic fields on the surface abundances of solar-type stars are studied in order to investigate whether the reported difference in lithium content of exoplanet-host stars can be related to their rotational history. Moreover, the asteroseismic properties predicted for stars with and without exoplanets are compared to determine how such a scenario, which relates the lithium abundances and the rotational history of the star, can be further challenged by observations of solar-like oscillations. Methods: Based on observations of rotational periods of solar-type s…
Asteroseismic observations of internal stellar rotation have indicated a substantial lack of angular momentum transport in theoretical models of subgiant and red-giant stars. Accurate core and surface rotation rate measurements are therefore needed to constrain internal transport processes included in the models. We eliminate substantial systematic errors of asteroseismic surface rotation rates found in previous studies. We propose a new objective function for the Optimally Localized Averages method of rotational inversions for red-giant stars, which results in more accurate envelope rotation …
The differentially rotating outer layers of stars are thought to play a role in driving their magnetic activity, but the underlying mechanisms that generate and sustain differential rotation are poorly understood. We report the measurement of latitudinal differential rotation in the convection zones of 40 Sun-like stars using asteroseismology. For the most significant detections, the stars' equators rotate approximately twice as fast as their mid-latitudes. The latitudinal shear inferred from asteroseismology is much larger than predictions from numerical simulations.
We quantify the effect of observational spectroscopic and asteroseismic uncertainties on regularised least squares (RLS) inversions for the radial differential rotation of Sun-like and subgiant stars. We first solved the forward problem to model rotational splittings plus the observed uncertainties for models of a Sun-like star, HD 52265, and a subgiant star, KIC 7341231. We randomly perturbed the parameters of the stellar models within the uncertainties of the spectroscopic and asteroseismic constraints and used these perturbed stellar models to compute rotational splittings. We experimented …
The availability of asteroseismic constraints for a large sample of stars from the missions CoRoT and Kepler paves the way for various statistical studies of the seismic properties of stellar populations. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of rotation-induced mixing and thermohaline instability on the global asteroseismic parameters at different stages of the stellar evolution from the Zero Age Main Sequence to the Thermally Pulsating Asymptotic Giant Branch to distinguish stellar populations. We present a grid of stellar evolutionary models for four metallicities (Z = 0.0001, 0.002, 0.004,…

We have found a rotationally split series of core g-mode triplets and surface p-mode multiplets in a main sequence F star, KIC 9244992. Comparison with models shows that the star has a mass of about 1.45 M$_\odot$, and is at an advanced stage of main sequence evolution in which the central hydrogen abundance mass fraction is reduced to about 0.1. This is the second case, following KIC 11145123, of an asteroseismic determination of the rotation of the deep core and surface of an A-F main-sequence star. We have found, essentially model-independently, that the rotation near the surface, obtained …
The influence of rotation on the properties of red giants is studied in the context of the asteroseismic modelling of these stars. While red giants exhibit low surface rotational velocities, we find that the rotational history of the star has a large impact on its properties during the red giant phase. In particular, for stars massive enough to ignite He burning in non-degenerate conditions, rotational mixing induces a significant increase of the stellar luminosity and shifts the location of the core helium burning phase to a higher luminosity in the HR diagram. This of course results in a cha…
The solar analogs 16 Cyg A and 16 Cyg B are excellent asteroseismic targets in the \Kepler field of view and together with a red dwarf and a Jovian planet form an interesting system. For these more evolved Sun-like stars we cannot detect surface rotation with the current \Kepler data but instead use the technique of asteroseimology to determine rotational properties of both 16 Cyg A and B. We find the rotation periods to be $23.8^{+1.5}_{-1.8} \rm \, days$ and $23.2^{+11.5}_{-3.2} \rm \, days$, and the angles of inclination to be $56^{+6}_{-5} \, ^{\circ}$ and $36^{+17}_{-7} \, ^{\circ}$, for …
With four years of nearly-continuous photometry from Kepler, we are finally in a good position to apply asteroseismology to $γ$ Doradus stars. In particular several analyses have demonstrated the possibility to detect non-uniform period spacings, which have been predicted to be directly related to rotation. In the present work, we define a new seismic diagnostic for rotation in $γ$ Doradus stars that are too rapidly rotating to present rotational splittings. Based on the non uniformity of their period spacings, we define the observable $Σ$ as the slope of the period spacing when plotted as a f…
Aims. We investigate the s-process during the AGB phase of stellar models whose cores are enforced to rotate at rates consistent with asteroseismology observations of their progenitors and successors. Methods. We calculated new 2M$_{\odot}$, Z=0.01 models, rotating at 0, 125, and 250 km/s at the start of main sequence. An artificial, additional viscosity was added to enhance the transport of angular momentum in order to reduce the core rotation rates to be in agreement with asteroseismology observations. We compared rotation rates of our models with observed rotation rates during the MS up to …
We present the first detection of a rotationally affected series consisting of 36 consecutive high-order sectoral dipole gravity modes in a slowly pulsating B (SPB) star. The results are based on the analysis of four years of virtually uninterrupted photometric data assembled with the Kepler Mission, and high-resolution spectra acquired using the HERMES spectrograph at the 1.2 meter Mercator Telescope. The spectroscopic measurements place KIC7760680 inside the SPB instability strip, near the cool edge. The photometric analysis reveals the longest unambiguous series of gravity modes of the same…
Studies using asteroseismic ages and rotation rates from star-spot rotation have indicated that standard age-rotation relations may break down roughly half-way through the main sequence lifetime, a phenomenon referred to as weakened magnetic braking. While rotation rates from spots can be difficult to determine for older, less active stars, rotational splitting of asteroseismic oscillation frequencies can provide rotation rates for both active and quiescent stars, and so can confirm whether this effect really takes place on the main sequence. We obtained asteroseismic rotation rates of 91 main…
Transport of angular momentum in stellar interiors is currently not well understood. Asteroseismology can provide us with estimates of internal rotation of stars and thereby advances our understanding of angular momentum transport. We can measure core-rotation rates in red-giant stars and we can place upper bounds on surface-rotation rates using measurements of dipole ($l=1$) modes. Here, we aim to determine the theoretical sensitivity of modes of different spherical degree towards the surface rotation. Additionally, we aim to identify modes that can potentially add sensitivity at intermediate…
Transport of angular momentum has been a challenging topic within the stellar evolution community, even more since the recent asteroseismic surveys. All published studies on rotation using asteroseismic observations show a discrepancy between the observed and calculated rotation rates, indicating there is an undetermined process of angular momentum transport active in these stars. We aim to constrain the efficiency of this process by investigating rotation rates of 2.5 M$_{\odot}$ stars. First, we investigated whether the Tayler-Spruit dynamo could be responsible for the extra transport of ang…
HD 129929 is a slowly-rotating $β$ Cephei pulsator with a rich spectrum of detected oscillations, including two rotational multiplets. The asteroseismic interpretation revealed the presence of radial differential rotation in this massive star of $\sim$9.35 M . The stellar core is indeed estimated to spin $\sim$3.6 times faster than the surface. The surface rotation was consequently derived as $\sim$2 km/s. This massive star represents an ideal counter-part to the wealth of space-based photometry results for main-sequence and evolved low-mass stars. Those latter have revealed a new, and often u…
Is a 1D perturbative method sufficient for asteroseismic modelling of $β$ Cephei pulsators? Implications for measurements of rotation and internal magnetic fields
Kepler ultra-high precision photometry of long and continuous observations provides a unique dataset in which surface rotation and variability can be studied for thousands of stars. Because many of these old field stars also have independently measured asteroseismic ages, measurements of rotation and activity are particularly interesting in the context of age-rotation-activity relations. In particular, age-rotation relations generally lack good calibrators at old ages, a problem that this Kepler sample of old-field stars is uniquely suited to address. We study the surface rotation and photomet…
The influence of rotational mixing on the evolution and asteroseismic properties of solar-type stars is studied. Rotational mixing changes the global properties of a solar-type star with a significant increase of the effective temperature resulting in a shift of the evolutionary track to the blue part of the HR diagram. These differences are related to changes of the chemical composition, because rotational mixing counteracts the effects of atomic diffusion leading to larger helium surface abundances for rotating models than for non-rotating ones. Higher values of the large frequency separatio…
This article describes a moving-windowed autocorrelation technique which, when applied to an asteroseismic Fourier power spectrum, can be used to automatically detect the frequency of maximum p-mode power, large and small separations, mean p-mode linewidth, and constrain the stellar inclination angle and rotational splitting. The technique is illustrated using data from the CoRoT and Kepler space telescopes and tested using artificial data.
Radial differential rotation is an important parameter for stellar dynamo theory and for understanding angular momentum transport. We investigate the potential of using a large number of similar stars simultaneously to constrain their average radial differential rotation gradient: we call this 'ensemble fitting'. We use a range of stellar models along the main sequence, each with a synthetic rotation profile. The rotation profiles are step functions with a step of -350 nHz, which is located at the base of the convection zone. These models are used to compute the rotational splittings of the p …
We report spectroscopic observations of 23 candidates for Kepler asteroseismic targets and 10 other stars in the Kepler field, carried out at two observatories (see the footnote). For all these stars, we derive the radial velocities, effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, the projected rotational velocity, and estimate the MK type. HIP 97513 and HIP 92132 are classified as suspected new single-lined spectroscopic binaries. For 28 stars, the radial velocity is measured for the first time.
A spectroscopic analysis was carried out to clarify the properties of KIC 11145123 -- the first main-sequence star with a determination of core-to-surface rotation -- based on spectra observed with the High Dispersion Spectrograph (HDS) of the Subaru telescope. The atmospheric parameters ($T_{\rm eff} = 7600$ K, $\log g = 4.2$, $ξ= 3.1$ km s$^{-1}$ and $ {\rm [Fe/H]} = -0.71$ dex), the radial and rotation velocities, and elemental abundances were obtained by analysing line strengths and fitting line profiles, which were calculated with a 1D LTE model atmosphere. The main properties of KIC 1114…
According to the rotational splitting law of g modes, the frequency spectra of EE Cam can be disentangled only with oscillation modes of $\ell$ = 0, 1, and 2. Fifteen sets of rotational splits are found, containing five sets of $\ell=1$ multiplets and ten sets of $\ell=2$ multiplets. The rotational period of EE Cam is deduced to be $P_{\rm rot}$ = $1.84_{-0.05}^{+0.07}$ days. When we do model fittings, we use two nonradial oscillation modes ($f_{11}$ and $f_{32}$) and the fundamental radial mode $f_{1}$. The fitting results show that $χ^{2}$ of the best-fitting model is much smaller than those…
We present an asteroseismic approach to study the dynamics of the stellar interior in red-giant stars by asteroseismic inversion of the splittings induced by the stellar rotation on the oscillation frequencies. We show preliminary results obtained for the red giant KIC4448777 observed by the space mission Kepler.
In this paper we study the dynamics of the stellar interior of the early red-giant star KIC 4448777 by asteroseismic inversion of 14 splittings of the dipole mixed modes obtained from {\it Kepler} observations. In order to overcome the complexity of the oscillation pattern typical of red-giant stars, we present a procedure which involves a combination of different methods to extract the rotational splittings from the power spectrum. We find not only that the core rotates faster than the surface, confirming previous inversion results generated for other red giants (Deheuvels et al. 2012,2014), …
The Mount Wilson Ca HK survey revealed magnetic activity variations in a large sample of solar-type stars with timescales ranging from 2.5 to 25 years. This broad range of cycle periods is thought to reflect differences in the rotational properties and the depths of the surface convection zones for stars with various masses and ages. Asteroseismic data will soon provide direct measurements of these quantities for individual stars, but many of the most promising targets are in the southern sky (e.g., alpha Cen A & B, beta Hyi, mu Ara, tau Cet, nu Ind), while long-term magnetic activity cycle su…

HD 144277 was previously discovered by MOST space photometry to be a young and hot delta Scuti star showing regular groups of pulsation frequencies. The first asteroseismic models required lower than solar metallicity to fit the observed frequency range based on a purely photometric analysis. High-resolution, high S/N spectroscopic data obtained with the HARPS spectrograph were used to determine the fundamental parameters and chemical abundances of HD 144277. These values were put into context alongside the results from asteroseismic models. The effective temperature, Teff, of HD 144277 was de…
The NASA Kepler mission is providing an unprecedented set of asteroseismic data. In particular, short-cadence lightcurves (~60s samplings), allow us to study solar-like stars covering a wide range of masses, spectral types and evolutionary stages. Oscillations have been observed in around 600 out of 2000 stars observed for one month during the survey phase of the Kepler mission. The measured light curves can present features related to the surface magnetic activity (starspots) and, thus we are able to obtain a good estimation of the surface (differential) rotation. In this work we establish th…
Context: Asteroseismic measurements reveal that an unknown efficient angular momentum (AM) transport mechanism is needed for subgiant and red giant stars. A revised prescription for AM transport by the magnetic Tayler instability has been recently proposed as a possible candidate for such a missing mechanism. Results: The revised prescription for the transport by the Tayler instability leads to low core rotation rates after the main sequence that are in better global agreement with asteroseismic measurements than those predicted by models with purely hydrodynamic processes or with the original…
Among the available methods for dating stars, gyrochronology is a powerful one because it requires knowledge of only the star's mass and rotation period. Gyrochronology relations have previously been calibrated using young clusters, with the Sun providing the only age dependence, and are therefore poorly calibrated at late ages. We used rotation period measurements of 310 Kepler stars with asteroseismic ages, 50 stars from the Hyades and Coma Berenices clusters and 6 field stars (including the Sun) with precise age measurements to calibrate the gyrochronology relation, whilst fully accounting …
The Kepler mission has been fantastic for asteroseismology of solar-type stars, but the targets are typically quite distant. As a consequence, the reliability of asteroseismic modeling has been limited by the precision of additional constraints from high-resolution spectroscopy and parallax measurements. A precise luminosity is particularly useful to minimize potential biases due to the intrinsic correlation between stellar mass and initial helium abundance. We have applied the latest version of the Asteroseismic Modeling Portal (AMP) to the complete Kepler data sets for 30 stars with known ro…
Context. The availability of asteroseismic constraints for a large sample of red giant stars from the CoRoT and Kepler missions paves the way for various statistical studies of the seismic properties of stellar populations. Aims. We use the first detailed spectroscopic study of 19 CoRoT red-giant stars (Morel et al 2014) to compare theoretical stellar evolution models to observations of the open cluster NGC 6633 and field stars. Methods. In order to explore the effects of rotation-induced mixing and thermohaline instability, we compare surface abundances of carbon isotopic ratio and lithium wi…
We present results of our 5-years-long program of ground-based spectroscopic and photometric observations of individual Kepler asteroseismic targets and the open clusters NGC6866 and NGC6811 from the Kepler field of view.We determined the effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, the projected rotational velocity and the radial velocity of 119 Kepler asteroseismic targets for which we acquired high-resolution spectra. For many of these stars the derived atmospheric parameters agree with Teff, log g, and [Fe/H] from the Kepler Input Catalog (KIC) to within their error bars. Only for …
The TESS space mission provides us with high-precision photometric observations of bright stars over more than 70% of the entire sky, allowing us to revisit and characterise well-known stars. We aim to conduct an asteroseismic analysis of the gamma Doradus star HD112429 using both the available ground-based spectroscopy and TESS photometry, and assess the conditions required to measure the near-core rotation rate and buoyancy travel time. We collect and reduce the available five sectors of short-cadence TESS photometry of this star, as well as 672 legacy observations from six medium- to high-r…
We present the results of a new investigation aimed to identify the pulsational characteristics of the Southern $β$ Cephei star ALS 3721. Spectroscopic and multicolour photometric data were acquired at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), South Africa in 2011. Frequency analysis showed that the oscillations of ALS 3721 could be attributed to the two main frequencies with higher significance. Stellar parameters and projected rotational velocity obtained by the spectra were also used to perform photometric mode identification. In order to determine spherical harmonic degrees ($l$),…
We have monitored 20 Sun-like stars in the Kepler field-of-view for excess flux with the FIES spectrograph on the Nordic Optical Telescope since the launch of Kepler spacecraft in 2009. These 20 stars were selected based on their asteroseismic properties to sample the parameter space (effective temperature, surface gravity, activity level etc.) around the Sun. Though the ultimate goal is to improve stellar dynamo models, we focus the present paper on the combination of space-based and ground-based observations can be used to test the age-rotation-activity relations. In this paper we describe t…
Reported are spectroscopic observations of 15 candidates for Kepler primary asteroseismic targets and 14 other stars in the Kepler field, carried out at three observatories (see the footnote). For all these stars, the radial velocities, effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, and the projected rotational velocity are derived from two separate sets of data by means of two independent methods. In addition, MK type is estimated from one of these sets of data. Three stars, HIP 94335, HIP 94734, and HIP 94743, are found to have variable radial-velocity. For HIP 94335 = FL Lyr, a well-k…
We propose a methodological framework to perform forward asteroseismic modeling of stars with a convective core, based on gravity-mode oscillations. These probe the near-core region in the deep stellar interior. The modeling relies on a set of observed high-precision oscillation frequencies of low-degree coherent gravity modes with long lifetimes and their observational uncertainties. Identification of the mode degree and azimuthal order is assumed to be achieved from rotational splitting and/or from period spacing patterns. This paper has two major outcomes. The first is a comprehensive list …
