We prove an instance of the Reciprocity Theorem that demonstrates that Kerr rotation, also known as the magneto-optical Kerr effect, may only arise in materials that break microscopic time reversal symmetry. This argument applies in the linear response regime, and only fails for nonlinear effects. Recent measurements with a modified Sagnac Interferometer have found finite Kerr rotation in a variety of superconductors. The Sagnac Interferometer is a probe for nonreciprocity, so it must be that time reversal symmetry is broken in these materials.
We show that, measured in a backscattering geometry, the polar Kerr effect is absent if the nonlocal electromagnetic response function respects Onsager symmetry, characteristic of thermodynamic states that preserve time-reversal symmetry. A key element is an expression for the reflectivity tensor in terms of the retarded Green's function.
Symmetry breaking of light states is of interest for the understanding of nonlinear optics, photonic circuits, telecom applications and optical pulse generation. Here we demonstrate 4-fold symmetry breaking of the resonances of ring resonators with Kerr nonlinearity. This symmetry breaking naturally occurs in a resonator with bidirectionally propagating light with orthogonal polarization components. The four circulating field components are shown to exhibit multiple and, nested and isolated, spontaneous symmetry breaking bifurcations, and are also capable of complex oscillatory dynamics - such…
We study the spontaneous temporal symmetry breaking instability in a coherently-driven passive optical Kerr resonator observed experimentally by Xu and Coen in Opt.~Lett.~{\bf 39}, 3492 (2014). We perform a detailed stability analysis of the Lugiato-Lefever model for the optical Kerr resonators and analyze the temporal bifurcation structure of stationary symmetric and the emerging asymmetric states as a function of the pump power. For intermediate pump powers a pitchfork loop is responsible for the destabilization of symmetric states towards stationary asymmetric ones while at large pump power…
Spontaneous symmetry breaking is an important concept in many areas of physics. A fundamentally simple symmetry breaking mechanism in electrodynamics occurs between counter-propagating electromagnetic waves in ring resonators, mediated by the Kerr nonlinearity. The interaction of counter-propagating light in bi-directionally pumped microresonators finds application in the realisation of optical non-reciprocity (for optical diodes), studies of PT-symmetric systems, and the generation of counter-propagating solitons. Here, we present comprehensive analytical and dynamical models for the nonlinea…
We report on a systematic study of temporal Kerr cavity soliton dynamics in the presence of pulsed or amplitude modulated driving fields. In stark contrast to the more extensively studied case of phase modulations, we find that Kerr cavity solitons are not always attracted to maxima or minima of driving field amplitude inhomogeneities. Instead, we find that the solitons are attracted to temporal positions associated with specific driving field values that depend only on the cavity detuning. We describe our findings in light of a spontaneous symmetry breaking instability that physically ensues …
The process of soliton Cherenkov radiation (also known as dispersive wave emission) in microresonator frequency combs plays a critical role in generating broadband and coherent microcomb spectra. Here, we report the observation of symmetry breaking in the group velocity of counter-propagating dissipative Kerr solitons, induced by polychromatic soliton Cherenkov radiation. Results show that in the presence of higher-order dispersion, the temporal arrangement of a multi-soliton state affects its group velocity, an effect which originates from the interference between multiple radiative tails emi…
Spontaneous symmetry breaking in nonlinear systems provides a unified method to understand vastly different phenomena, ranging from Higgs mechanism [1] and superconductivity [2] to ecological stability [3] and genome generation [4]. Spontaneous symmetry breaking is typically considered as the intrinsic property of nonlinear systems with fixed occurrence condition and property, as the form and magnitude of nonlinear interactions cannot be modified [5]. Here, we report the development of reconfigurable Kerr optical nonlinearity to control spontaneous symmetry breaking. This is achieved through t…
The collective mode spectrum of a symmetry-breaking state, such as a superconductor, provides crucial insight into the nature of the order parameter. In this context, we present a microscopic weak-coupling theory for the collective modes of a generic multi-component time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductor, and show that fluctuations in the relative amplitude and phase of the two order parameter components are well-defined underdamped collective modes, even in the presence of nodal quasiparticles. We then demonstrate that these "generalized clapping modes" can be detected using a number …
Reciprocity is a fundamental principle follows the time reversal symmetry of physics. However, many practical applications require breaking time reversal symmetry, hence, are called nonreciprocal. This article aims at discussing time reversal symmetry, developing fundamental building block to achieve nonreciprocity leading to robust analytical model to explain electromagnetic rotation upon propagation through nonreciprocal medium. Detailed mathematical derivation is presented for Faraday and Kerr rotation in the presence of external bias which breaks time reversal symmetry and leads to achieve…
The realization of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) requires a system that exhibits a near perfect symmetry. SSB manifests itself through a pitchfork bifurcation, but that bifurcation is fragile, and perturbed by any asymmetry or imperfections. Consequently, exploiting SSB for real-world applications is challenging and often requires cumbersome stabilization techniques. Here, we reveal a novel method that automatically leads to symmetric conditions, and demonstrate its practical application in coherently-driven, two-mode, passive Kerr resonators. More specifically, we show that introducing …
We study symmetry breaking of solitons in the framework of a nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equation (NLFSE), characterized by its Lévy index, with cubic nonlinearity and a symmetric double-well potential. Asymmetric, symmetric, and antisymmetric soliton solutions are found, with stable asymmetric soliton solutions emerging from unstable symmetric and antisymmetric ones by way of symmetry-breaking bifurcations. Two different bifurcation scenarios are possible. First, symmetric soliton solutions undergo a symmetry-breaking bifurcation of the pitchfork type, which gives rise to a branch of asy…
