Single-photon sources based on the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion play a key role in various applied disciplines of quantum optics. We characterize intrinsic luminescence of BBO crystals as a source of non-removable noise in quantum-optics experiments. By analysing its spectral and temporal properties together with its intensity, we evaluate the impact of luminescence on single-photon state preparation using spontaneous parametric down-conversion.

Generation of broadband spontaneous parametric fluorescence using multiple bulk nonlinear crystals

We propose a novel method for generating broadband spontaneous parametric fluorescence by using a set of bulk nonlinear crystals (NLCs). We also demonstrate this scheme experimentally. Our method employs a superposition of spontaneous parametric fluorescence spectra generated using multiple bulk NLCs. Optically Induced Polarization and Depolarization of an Electron Spin in a Nitrogen-Vacancy Center of Diamond Nano-crystals

Pulsed laser excitation causes the luminescence of Nitrogen Vacancy centers in diamond to unexpectedly decrease with increasing pulse energy. This decrease is observed in both the negatively charged and neutral centers and is caused by shortening of the luminescence lifetimes of the centers of both types. Generating entangled photon pairs in a parallel crystal geometry

We present recent findings towards developing brighter entangled photon sources in critically phase matched (CPM) nonlinear crystals. Specifically, we use type-I collinear phase matching at non-degenerate wavelengths in parallel \b{eta}-Barium Borate (BBO) crystals to generate pairs of polarization entangled photons for free-space quantum key distribution (QKD). Crossed crystal scheme for fs-pulsed entangled photon generation in ppKTP

We demonstrate a novel scheme for femto-second pulsed spontaneous parametric down-conversion in periodically poled KTP crystals. Our scheme is based on a crossed crystal configuration with collinear quasi-phase-matching. The non-degenerate photon pairs are split in a fiber-based wavelength division multiplexer. Efficient fiber coupling of down-conversion photon pairs

We develop and apply an effective analytic theory of a non-collinear, broadband type-I parametric down-conversion to study a coupling efficiency of the generated photon pairs into single mode optical fibers. We derive conditions necessary for highly efficient coupling for single and double type-I crystal producing polarization entangled states of light. We compare the obtained approximate analytic expressions with the exact numerical solutions and discuss the results for a case of BBO crystals.

Observation of elliptical rings in Type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion

We investigate the transverse spatial profile of down-converted light produced by noncollinear, degenerate, Type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion in two types of nonlinear crystals. Testing The Existence of Single Photons

We demonstrated the existence of single photon by counting correlation of laser output of a birefringent $β$-Barium Borate (BBO) crystal. The best result of anti-correlation parameter violates the classical prediction for wavelike behavior of light by 80 standard deviations.

Realization of All-or-nothing-type Kochen-Specker Experiment with Single Photons

Using the spontaneous parametric down-conversion process in a type-I phase matching BBO crystal as single photon source, we perform an all-or-nothing-type Kochen-Specker experiment proposed by Simon \QTR{it}{et al}. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \QTR{bf}{85}, 1783 (2000)] to verify whether noncontextual hidden variables or quantum mechanics is right. The results strongly agree with quantum mechanics.

The frequency correlation (or decorrelation) of photon pairs is of great importance in long-range quantum communications and photonic quantum computing. We experimentally characterize a spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) source, based on a Beta-Barium Borate (BBO) crystal cut for type-II phase matching at 1550 nm which emits photons with the positive or no spectral correlations.
