In this work we study the influence of the symmetry energy and its slope on three major properties of neutron stars: the maximum mass, the radii of the canonical 1.4$M_\odot$ and the minimum mass that enables the direct URCA effect. We utilize four parametrizations of the relativistic quantum hadrodynamics and vary the symmetry energy within accepted values. We see that although the maximum mass is almost independent of it, the radius of the canonical $1.4M_\odot$ and the mass that enables the direct URCA effect is strongly correlated with the symmetry energy and its slope. Also, since we expect that the radius grows with the slope, a theoretical limit arises when we increase this quantity above certain values.
The constraints on tidal deformability $Λ$ of neutron stars are first extracted from GW170817 by LIGO and Virgo Collaborations but the relation between radius $R$ and tidal deformability $Λ$ is still nuder debate. Using an isospin-dependent parameterized equation of state (EOS), we study the relation between $R$ and $Λ$ of neutron stars and its dependence on parameters of symmetry energy $E_{\rm sym}$ and EOS of symmetric nuclear matter $E_0$ when the mass is fixed as $1.4$ $M_\odot$, $1.0$ $M_\odot$, and $1.8$ $M_\odot$, respectively. We find that, though the changes of high order parameters …
We examine the correlations of neutron star radii with the nuclear matter incompressibility, symmetry energy, and their slopes, which are the key parameters of the equation of state (EoS) of asymmetric nuclear matter. The neutron star radii and the EoS parameters are evaluated using a representative set of 24 Skyrme-type effective forces and 18 relativistic mean field models, and two microscopic calculations, all describing 2$M_\odot$ neutron stars. Unified EoSs for the inner-crust-core region have been built for all the phenomenological models, both relativistic and non-relativistic. Our inve…
The neutron star maximum mass and the radius are investigated within the framework of the relativistic mean-field (RMF) model. The variation in the radius at the canonical mass, $R_{1.4}$, using different inner crust equation of state (EoS) with different symmetry energy slope parameter is studied. It is found that although the NS maximum mass and the corresponding radius do not vary much with different inner crust EoSs, the radius and the tidal deformability at 1.4$M_{\odot}$ vary with the different choice of crust EoS and variation of about 1-2 km is seen in the radius at the canonical mass.…

In this work, we study the effects of nuclear symmetry energy slope on neutron star dense matter equation of state and its impact on neutron star observables (mass-radius, tidal response). We construct the equation of state within the framework of covariant density functional theory implementing coupling schemes of non-linear and density-dependent models with viability of heavier non-nucleonic degrees of freedom. The slope of symmetry energy parameter ($L_{\text{sym}}$) is adjusted following density-dependence of isovector meson coupling to baryons. We find that smaller values of $L_{\text{sym…
We investigate the effects of the symmetry energy on nuclear pasta phases and the crust-core transition in neutron stars. We employ the relativistic mean-field approach and the coexisting phases method to study the properties of pasta phases presented in the inner crust of neutron stars. It is found that the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density plays an important role in the crust-core transition and pasta phase properties. The correlation between the symmetry energy slope and the crust-core transition density obtained in this study is consistent with those obtained by ot…
In the present work we used five different versions of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model to compute astrophysical quantities related to the GW170817 event and to neutron star cooling process. Two of the models are based on the original bag potential structure and three versions consider a harmonic oscillator potential to confine the quarks. The bag-like models also incorporate the pasta phase used to describe the inner crust of neutron stars. We show that the pasta phase always play a minor or negligible role in all studies. Moreover, while no clear correlation between the models that satis…
Background: The nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ encodes information about the energy necessary to make nuclear systems more neutron-rich. While its slope parameter L at the saturation density $ρ_0$ of nuclear matter has been relatively well constrained by recent astrophysical observations and terrestrial nuclear experiments, its curvature $K_{\rm{sym}}$ characterizing the $E_{sym}(ρ)$ around $2ρ_0$ remains largely unconstrained. Over 520 calculations for $E_{sym}(ρ)$ using various nuclear theories and interactions in the literature have predicted several significantly different $K_{\rm{sy…
The nuclear symmetry energy plays a key role in determining the equation of state of dense, neutron-rich matter, which governs the properties of both terrestrial nuclear matter as well as astrophysical neutron stars. A recent measurement of the neutron skin thickness from the PREX collaboration has lead to new constraints on the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy, L, which can be directly compared to inferences from gravitational-wave observations of the first binary neutron star merger inspiral, GW170817 In this paper, we explore a new regime for potentially constraining the slope, L, of th…
Analyses that connect astrophysical observations of neutron stars with nuclear matter properties sometimes rely on equation-of-state insensitive relations. We show that the slope of the binary Love relations (i.e.~between the tidal deformabilities of binary neutron stars) encodes the rate of change of the nuclear matter speed of sound below three times nuclear saturation density. Twin stars lead to relations that present a signature ''hill'', ''drop'', and ''swoosh'' due to the second (mass-radius) stable branch, requiring a new description of the binary love relations.
We construct parameter sets of the relativistic mean-field model fitted to the recent constraints on the asymmetry energy $J$ and the slope parameter $L$ for pure neutron matter. We find cases of unphysical behaviour, i.e.\ the appearance of negative pressures, for stiff parameter sets with low values of the effective mass $m^*/m$. In some cases the equation of state of pure neutron matter turns out to be outside the allowed band given by chiral effective field theory. The mass-radius relations of neutron stars for all acceptable parameter sets shows a maximum mass in excess of $2M_\odot$ bein…
In the framework of Thomas-Fermi approximation, we study systematically the EOSs and microscopic structures of neutron star matter in a vast density range with $n_\mathrm{b}\approx 10^{-10}$-2 $\mathrm{fm}^{-3}$, where various covariant density functionals are adopted, i.e., those with nonlinear self couplings (NL3, PK1, TM1, GM1, MTVTC) and density-dependent couplings (DD-LZ1, DDME-X, PKDD, DD-ME2, DD2, TW99). It is found that the EOSs generally coincide with each other at $n_\mathrm{b}\lesssim 10^{-4}$ fm${}^{-3}$ and 0.1 fm${}^{-3}\lesssim n_\mathrm{b} \lesssim 0.3$ fm${}^{-3}$, while in ot…
We study the energy-dependent time lags and rms fractional amplitude of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) of a group of neutron-star low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We find that for the lower kHz QPO the slope of the best-fitting linear model to the time-lag spectrum and the total rms amplitude integrated over the 2 to 25 keV energy band both decrease exponentially with the luminosity of the source. For the upper kHz QPO the slope of the time-lag spectrum is consistent with zero, while the total rms amplitude decreases exponentially with the luminosity of the source. We sho…
We study the effects of the symmetry energy on the neutron drip density and properties of nuclei in neutron star crusts. The nonuniform matter around the neutron drip point is calculated by using the Thomas--Fermi approximation with the relativistic mean-field model. The neutron drip density and the composition of the crust are found to be correlated with the symmetry energy and its slope. We compare the self-consistent Thomas--Fermi approximation with other treatments of surface and Coulomb energies and find that these finite-size effects play an essential role in determining the equilibrium …
The role of the symmetry energy and the neutron-matter stiffness on the tidal deformability of a cold nonaccreted neutron star is studied using a set of unified equations of state. Based on the nuclear energy-density functional theory, these equations of state provide a thermodynamically consistent treatment of all regions of the star and were calculated using functionals that were precision fitted to experimental and theoretical nuclear data. Predictions are compared to constraints inferred from the recent detection of the gravitational-wave signal GW170817 from a binary neutron-star merger a…
The correlation between neutron skin-thickness of a neutron-rich nucleus and slope parameter of symmetry energy is assessed as a function of density using relativistic mean field models containing non-linear couplings among different mesons. Models with larger skin were found to probe the slope parameter even at suprasaturation densities, whereas models with smaller skin were observed to be sensitive only at specific subsaturation density, connected to the average density of nuclei. Possible reasons behind this density dependence are explored systematically. These results might be model specif…
Using various kinds of relativistic mean-field models as well as the quark-meson coupling model, we study in detail the properties of neutron stars. We find that the equation of state in SU(3) flavor symmetry can support a neutron star with mass of $(1.8 \sim 2.1) M_{\odot}$ even if hyperons exist inside the core of a neutron star.
In this paper, we study the role of the symmetry energy on the neutron-drip transition in both nonaccreting and accreting neutron stars, allowing for the presence of a strong magnetic field as in magnetars. The density, pressure, and composition at the neutron-drip threshold are determined using the recent set of the Brussels-Montreal microscopic nuclear mass models, which mainly differ in their predictions for the value of the symmetry energy $J$ and its slope $L$ in infinite homogeneous nuclear matter at saturation. Although some correlations between on the one hand the neutron-drip density,…
We perform a systematic study of the dependence of the r-mode phenomenology in normal fluid pulsar neutron stars on the symmetry energy slope parameter $L$. An essential ingredient in this study is the bulk viscosity, which is evaluated consistently for several equations of state corresponding to different values of the slope parameter $L$. Direct Urca processes, which are allowed from a critical $L$-value onwards, enhance the bulk viscosity and have large influence on the $r$-mode features, such as the instability boundary and spin-down properties of newborn neutron stars. The magnitude of th…
With the discovery of massive neutron stars such as PSR J1614-2230, the question has arisen whether exotic matter such as hyperons can exist in the neutron star core. We examine the conditions under which hyperons can exist in massive neutron stars. We consistently investigate the vector meson-hyperon coupling, going from SU(6) quark model to a broader SU(3) symmetry. We propose that the maximum neutron star mass decreases linearly with the strangeness content f_s of the neutron star core as M_max(f_s) = M_max(0) - 0.6 M_solar (f_s/0.1), which seems to be independent of the underlying nuclear …
[Background] In our earlier work {\bf [Phys. Rev. C 104, 055804 (2021)]}, we studied the surface properties of a neutron star, assuming it as a huge finite nucleus containing protons, neutrons, electrons, and muons. For the first time, we reported these results of a neutron star for a few representative masses. In the present paper, we give a detailed study of these quantities to draw definite conclusions. [Method]To carry forward our earlier idea, the energy density functional of the momentum space of neutron star matter is converted to the coordinate space in a local density approximation. T…
We trace a systematic and consistent method to precisely numerate the magnitude range for various structural and isospin compositional properties of the neutron star. Incompressibility, symmetry energy, slope parameter and curvature of a neutron star are investigated using the relativistic energy density functional within the framework of coherent density fluctuation model. The analytical expression for the energy density functional of the neutron star matter is motivated from the Br$\ddot{u}$ckner functional and acquired by the polynomial fitting of the saturation curves for three different r…
We describe the main features of our most recent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov nuclear mass models, based on 16-parameter generalized Skyrme forces. They have been fitted to the data of the 2012 Atomic Mass Evaluation, and favour a value of 30 MeV for the symmetry coefficient J, the corresponding root-mean square deviation being 0.549 MeV. We find that this conclusion is compatible with measurements of neutron-skin thickness. By constraining the underlying interactions to fit various equations of state of neutron matter calculated {\it ab initio} our models are well adapted to a realistic and unifie…
We study the effects of nuclear symmetry energy on the mass-radius relation and tidal deformability of neutron stars, considering the self-consistency of the equation of state (EOS). We first construct a set of unified EOSs based on relativistic mean-field models with different density dependence of the symmetry energy. For the description of pasta phases appearing in the inner crust of neutron stars, we perform a self-consistent Thomas-Fermi calculation using the same nuclear interaction as that for the uniform matter in the core. To examine possible effects from the self-consistency of the E…
Simulating Binary Neutron Star Mergers with Finite-temperature Equations of State: The influences of the slope of the symmetry energy and artificial heating
The post-merger gravitational wave (GW) emission from a binary neutron star merger is expected to provide exciting new constraints on the dense-matter equation of state (EoS). Such constraints rely, by and large, on the existence of quasi-universal relations, which relate the peak frequencies of the post-merger GW spectrum to properties of the neutron star structure in a model-independent way. In this work, we report on violations of existing quasi-universal relations between the peak spectral frequency, f_2, and the stellar radius, for EoSs models with backwards-bending slopes in their mass-r…
We calculate the equation of state of neutron matter with realistic two- and three-nucleon interactions using quantum Monte Carlo techniques, and illustrate that the short-range three-neutron interaction determines the correlation between neutron matter energy at nuclear saturation density and higher densities relevant to neutron stars. Our model also makes an experimentally testable prediction for the correlation between the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence -- determined solely by the strength of the short-range terms in the three neutron force. The same force provides a sig…
The density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy remains poorly constrained. Starting from precise empirical values of the nuclear volume and surface symmetry energy coefficients and the nuclear saturation density, we show how in the ambit of microscopic calculations with different energy density functionals, the value of the symmetry energy slope parameter $L$ alongwith that for neutron skin can be put in tighter bounds. The value of $L$ is found to be $L$= 64$\pm $5 MeV. For $^{208}$Pb, the neutron skin thickness comes out to be 0.188 $\pm $0.014 fm. Knowing $L$, the method can be applied t…
We propose the existence of a lower bound on the energy of pure neutron matter (PNM) on the basis of unitary-gas considerations. We discuss its justification from experimental studies of cold atoms as well as from theoretical studies of neutron matter. We demonstrate that this bound results in limits to the density-dependent symmetry energy, which is the difference between the energies of symmetric nuclear matter and PNM. In particular, this bound leads to a lower limit to the volume symmetry energy parameter $S_0$. In addition, for assumed values of $S_0$ above this minimum, this bound implie…
The spinodal instabilities in hot asymmetric nuclear matter and some important critical parameters derived thereof are studied using six different families of relativistic mean-field (RMF) models. The slopes of the symmetry energy coefficient vary over a wide range within each family. The critical densities and proton fractions are more sensitive to the symmetry energy slope parameter at temperatures much below its critical value ($T_c\sim$14-16 MeV). The spread in the critical proton fraction at a given symmetry energy slope parameter is noticeably larger near $T_c$, indicating that the warm …
We discuss the observation that under neutron star conditions of charge neutrality and $β-$equilibrium the contribution from the symmetry energy to the equation of state (EoS) follows a universal behaviour. We call this behaviour the conjecture of a Universal Symmetry Energy Contribution (USEC). We find that an USEC holds provided the density dependence of the symmetry energy $E_s(n)$ follows a behaviour that limits the proton fraction $x(n)$ to values below the threshold for the direct Urca (DU) cooling process. The absence of DU cooling in typical mass neutron stars appears to be supported b…
Motivated by the large body of literature around the phenomenological properties of accreting black hole (BH) and neutron star (NS) X-ray binaries in the radio:X-ray luminosity plane, we carry out a comparative regression analysis on 36 BHs and 41 NSs in hard X-ray states, with data over 7 dex in X-ray luminosity for both. The BHs follow a radio to X-ray (logarithmic) luminosity relation with slope $β=0.59\pm0.02$, consistent with the NSs' slope ($β=0.44^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$) within 2.5$σ$. The best-fitting intercept for the BHs significantly exceeds that for the NSs, cementing BHs as more radio l…
We present an overview of microscopical calculations of the Equation of State (EOS) of neutron matter performed using Quantum Monte Carlo techniques. We focus to the role of the model of the three-neutron force in the high-density part of the EOS up to a few times the saturation density. We also discuss the interplay between the symmetry energy and the neutron star mass-radius relation. The combination of theoretical models of the EOS with recent neutron stars observations permits us to constrain the value of the symmetry energy and its slope. We show that astrophysical observations are starti…
One of the most significant challenges involved in efforts to understand the equation of state of dense neutron-rich matter is the uncertain density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Because of its broad impact, pinning down the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy has been a longstanding goal of both nuclear physics and astrophysics. Recent observations of neutron stars, in both electromagnetic and gravitational-wave spectra, have already constrained significantly the nuclear symmetry energy at high densities. Training deep neural networks to learn a computationally effi…
The nuclear symmetry energy is intimately connected with nuclear astrophysics. This contribution focuses on the estimation of the symmetry energy from experiment and how it is related to the structure of neutron stars. The most important connection is between the radii of neutron stars and the pressure of neutron star matter in the vicinity of the nuclear saturation density $n_s$. This pressure is essentially controlled by the nuclear symmetry energy parameters $S_v$ and $L$, the first two coefficients of a Taylor expansion of the symmetry energy around $n_s$. We discuss constraints on these p…
Within the minimum model of neutron stars (NS) consisting of neutrons, protons and electrons, a new approach is proposed for inferring the symmetry energy of super-dense neutron-rich nucleonic matter above twice the saturation density $ρ_0$ of nuclear matter directly from integrating iteratively barotropic pressures in both neutron stars and heavy-ion reactions. Simultaneously, the proton fraction of NSs at $β$ equilibrium is extracted as a function of baryon density from the same procedure. An application of this approach using the NS pressure from GW170817 and the pressure in cold symmetric …
Both the symmetry energy part and excluded volume corrections to the equation of state play an important role for the neutron star interior structure and composition, namely for the profile of the baryon density and the proton fraction. While the symmetry energy uniquely determines the proton fraction, excluded volume effects control the maximum density values inside neutron stars. Observations of cooling neutron stars indicate that the fast direct Urca cooling is not operative for the typical, low mass stars, pointing at proton fractions that lie below the threshold for the onset of direct Ur…
We investigate the role of the compact object in the production of jets from neutron star X-ray binaries. The goal is to quantify the effect of the neutron star spin, if any, in powering the jet. We compile all the available measures or estimates of the neutron star spin frequency in jet-detected neutron star X-ray binaries. We use as an estimate of the ranking jet power for each source, the normalisation of the power law which fits the X-ray/radio and X-ray/infrared luminosity correlations L_(radio/IR) proportional to L_(X)^(Gamma) (using infrared data for which there is evidence for jet emis…
Using several relativistic mean field models (such as GM1, GM3, NL3, TM1, FSUGold and IU-FSU) as well as the quark-meson coupling model, we calculate the particle fractions, the equation of state, the maximum mass and radius of a neutron star within relativistic Hartree approximation. In determining the couplings of the isoscalar, vector mesons to the octet baryons, we examine the extension of SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry to SU(3) flavor symmetry. Furthermore, we consider the strange ($σ^{\ast}$ and $ϕ$) mesons, and study how they affect the equation of state. We find that the equation of state …
The symmetry energy and its density dependence are crucial inputs for many nuclear physics and astrophysics applications, as they determine properties ranging from the neutron-skin thickness of nuclei to the crust thickness and the radius of neutron stars. Recently, PREX-II reported a value of $0.283 \pm 0.071$ fm for the neutron-skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb, implying a slope parameter $L = 106 \pm 37$ MeV, larger than most ranges obtained from microscopic calculations and other nuclear experiments. We use a nonparametric equation of state representation based on Gaussian processes to constrai…
The unbound nature of pure neutron matter (PNM) requires intrinsic correlations between the symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) EOS parameters (incompressibility $K_0$, skewness $J_0$ and kurtosis $I_0$) and those (slope $L$, curvature $K_{\rm{sym}}$ and skewness $J_{\rm{sym}}$) characterizing the symmetry energy independent of any nuclear many-body theory. We investigate these intrinsic correlations and their applications in better constraining the poorly known high-density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy. Several novel correlations connecting the characteristics of SNM EOS with those of nucle…
Using a phenomenological form of the equation of state of neutron matter near the saturation density which has been previously demonstrated to be a good characterization of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that currently available neutron star mass and radius measurements provide a significant constraint on the equation of state of neutron matter. At higher densities we model the equation of state using polytropes and a quark matter model, and we show that our results do not change strongly upon variation of the lower boundary density where these polytropes begin. Neutron star observat…
We model neutrino emission from a newly born neutron star subsequent to a supernova explosion to study its sensitivity to the equation of state, neutrino opacities, and convective instabilities at high baryon density. We find the time period and spatial extent over which convection operates is sensitive to the behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy at and above nuclear density. When convection ends within the proto-neutron star, there is a break in the predicted neutrino emission that may be clearly observable.
