In testing of hypothesis the robustness of the tests is an important concern. Generally, the maximum likelihood based tests are most efficient under standard regularity conditions, but they are highly non-robust even under small deviations from the assumed conditions. In this paper we have proposed generalized Wald-type tests based on minimum density power divergence estimators for parametric hypotheses. This method avoids the use of nonparametric density estimation and the bandwidth selection. The trade-off between efficiency and robustness is controlled by a tuning parameter $β$. The asymptotic distributions of the test statistics are chi-square with appropriate degrees of freedom. The performance of the proposed tests are explored through simulations and real data analysis.
INTRODUCTION: Wald's, the likelihood ratio (LR) and Rao's score tests and their corresponding confidence intervals (CIs), are the three most common estimators of parameters of Generalized Linear Models. On finite samples, these estimators are biased. The objective of this work is to analyze the coverage errors of the CI estimators in small samples for the log-Poisson model (i.e. estimation of incidence rate ratio) with innovative evaluation criteria, taking in account the overestimation/underestimation unbalance of coverage errors and the variable inclusion rate and follow-up in epidemiologica…
Since the two seminal papers by Fisher (1915, 1921) were published, the test under a fixed value correlation coefficient null hypothesis for the bivariate normal distribution constitutes an important statistical problem. In the framework of asymptotic robust statistics, it remains being a topic of great interest to be investigated. For this and other tests, focused on paired correlated normal random samples, Rényi's pseudodistance estimators are proposed, their asymptotic distribution is established and an iterative algorithm is provided for their computation. From them the Wald-type test stat…
In this paper, we study the strong consistency of a bias reduced kernel density estimator and derive a strongly con- sistent Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD) estimator. As application, we formulate a goodness-of-fit test and an asymptotically standard normal test for model selection. The Monte Carlo simulation show the effectiveness of the proposed estimation methods and statistical tests.
This paper derives a new family of estimators, namely the minimum density power divergence estimators, as a robust generalization of the maximum likelihood estimator for the polytomous logistic regression model. Based on these estimators, a family of Wald-type test statistics for linear hypotheses is introduced. Robustness properties of both the proposed estimators and the test statistics are theoretically studied through the classical influence function analysis. Appropriate real life examples are presented to justify the requirement of suitable robust statistical procedures in place of the l…
We propose a new space of phylogenetic trees which we call wald space. The motivation is to develop a space suitable for statistical analysis of phylogenies, but with a geometry based on more biologically principled assumptions than existing spaces: in wald space, trees are close if they induce similar distributions on genetic sequence data. As a point set, wald space contains the previously developed Billera-Holmes-Vogtmann (BHV) tree space; it also contains disconnected forests, like the edge-product (EP) space but without certain singularities of the EP space. We investigate two related geo…
In real life we often deal with independent but not identically distributed observations (i.n.i.d.o), for which the most well-known statistical model is the multiple linear regression model (MLRM) without random covariates. While the classical methods are based on the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), it is well known its lack of robustness to small deviations from the assumed conditions. In this paper, and based on the Rényi's pseudodistance (RP), we introduce a new family of estimators in case our information about the unknown parameter is given for i.n.i.d.o.. This family of estimators, l…
We propose simple formulas of confidence intervals for the Wald statistic, likelihood ratio statistic, and score statistic for a network meta-analysis. In addition, we consider resolutions for concerns that network meta-analyses with a small number of studies cannot hold a nominal confidence level. For a bias adjustment in analyses with a small number of studies, a Bartlett-type adjustment is a well-known method. Many Bartlett-type adjustment-type methods are based on maximum likelihood estimators. However, the network meta-analysis often uses the restricted maximum likelihood estimators that …
For a given parametric probability model, we consider the risk of the maximum likelihood estimator with respect to $α$-divergence, which includes the special cases of Kullback--Leibler divergence, the Hellinger distance and $χ^2$ divergence. The asymptotic expansion of the risk is given with respect to sample sizes of up to order $n^{-2}$. Each term in the expansion is expressed with the geometrical properties of the Riemannian manifold formed by the parametric probability model. We attempt to measure the difficulty of specifying a model through this expansion.
We consider the problem of robust inference under the generalized linear model (GLM) with stochastic covariates. We derive the properties of the minimum density power divergence estimator of the parameters in GLM with random design and use this estimator to propose robust Wald-type tests for testing any general composite null hypothesis about the GLM. The asymptotic and robustness properties of the proposed tests are also examined for the GLM with random design. Application of the proposed robust inference procedures to the popular Poisson regression model for analyzing count data is discussed…
Zhang (2019) presented a general estimation approach based on the Gaussian distribution for general parametric models where the likelihood of the data is difficult to obtain or unknown, but the mean and variance-covariance matrix are known. Castilla and Zografos (2021) extended the method to density power divergence-based estimators, which are more robust than the likelihood-based Gaussian estimator against data contamination. In this paper we introduce the restricted minimum density power divergence Gaussian estimator (MDPDGE) and study its main asymptotic properties. Also, we examine it robu…
The semi-parametric Cox proportional hazards regression model has been widely used for many years in several applied sciences. However, a fully parametric proportional hazards model, if appropriately assumed, can often lead to more efficient inference. To tackle the extreme non-robustness of the traditional maximum likelihood estimator in the presence of outliers in the data under such fully parametric proportional hazard models, a robust estimation procedure has recently been proposed extending the concept of the minimum density power divergence estimator (MDPDE) under this set-up. In this pa…
In this paper, we consider estimators for an additive functional of $ϕ$, which is defined as $θ(P;ϕ)=\sum_{i=1}^kϕ(p_i)$, from $n$ i.i.d. random samples drawn from a discrete distribution $P=(p_1,...,p_k)$ with alphabet size $k$. We propose a minimax optimal estimator for the estimation problem of the additive functional. We reveal that the minimax optimal rate is characterized by the divergence speed of the fourth derivative of $ϕ$ if the divergence speed is high. As a result, we show there is no consistent estimator if the divergence speed of the fourth derivative of $ϕ$ is larger than $p^{-…
In this paper, we develop robust estimators and tests for one-shot device testing under proportional hazards assumption based on divergence measures. Through a detailed Monte Carlo simulation study and a numerical example, the developed inferential procedures are shown to be more robust than the classical procedures, based on maximum likelihood estimators.
Estimating Kullback-Leibler divergence from identical and independently distributed samples is an important problem in various domains. One simple and effective estimator is based on the k nearest neighbor distances between these samples. In this paper, we analyze the convergence rates of the bias and variance of this estimator. Furthermore, we derive a lower bound of the minimax mean square error and show that kNN method is asymptotically rate optimal.
We study the minimax estimation of $α$-divergences between discrete distributions for integer $α\ge 1$, which include the Kullback--Leibler divergence and the $χ^2$-divergences as special examples. Dropping the usual theoretical tricks to acquire independence, we construct the first minimax rate-optimal estimator which does not require any Poissonization, sample splitting, or explicit construction of approximating polynomials. The estimator uses a hybrid approach which solves a problem-independent linear program based on moment matching in the non-smooth regime, and applies a problem-dependent…
Latent variable models (LVMs) are commonly used in psychology and increasingly used for analyzing brain imaging data. Such studies typically involve a small number of participants (n<100), where standard asymptotic results often fail to appropriately control the type 1 error. This paper presents two corrections improving the control of the type 1 error of Wald tests in LVMs estimated using maximum likelihood (ML). First, we derive a correction for the bias of the ML estimator of the variance parameters. This enables us to estimate corrected standard errors for model parameters and corrected Wa…
Statistical divergences (SDs), which quantify the dissimilarity between probability distributions, are a basic constituent of statistical inference and machine learning. A modern method for estimating those divergences relies on parametrizing an empirical variational form by a neural network (NN) and optimizing over parameter space. Such neural estimators are abundantly used in practice, but corresponding performance guarantees are partial and call for further exploration. We establish non-asymptotic absolute error bounds for a neural estimator realized by a shallow NN, focusing on four popula…
