Twisting quasi-alternating links

Quasi-alternating links are homologically thin for both Khovanov homology and knot Floer homology. We show that every quasi-alternating link gives rise to an infinite family of quasi-alternating links obtained by replacing a crossing with an alternating rational tangle. Consequently, we show that many pretzel links are quasi-alternating, and we determine the thickness of Khovanov homology for "most" pretzel links with arbitrarily many strands.

Bordered Floer homology and the spectral sequence of a branched double cover I

Given a link in the three-sphere, Z. Szabó and the second author constructed a spectral sequence starting at the Khovanov homology of the link and converging to the Heegaard Floer homology of its branched double-cover. The aim of this paper and its sequel is to explicitly calculate this spectral sequence, using bordered Floer homology. There are two primary ingredients in this computation: an explicit calculation of filtered bimodules associated to Dehn twists and a pairing theorem for polygons. 2-strand twisting and knots with identical quantum knot homologies

Given a knot, we ask how its Khovanov and Khovanov-Rozansky homologies change under the operation of introducing twists in a pair of strands. We obtain long exact sequences in homology and further algebraic structure which is then used to derive topological and computational results. Two of our applications include giving a new way to generate arbitrary numbers of knots with isomorphic homologies and finding an infinite number of mutant knot pairs with isomorphic reduced homologies.

Knot doubling operators and bordered Heegaard Floer homology

We use bordered Heegaard Floer homology to compute the tau invariant of a family of satellite knots obtained via twisted infection along two components of the Borromean rings, a generalization of Whitehead doubling. We show that tau of the resulting knot depends only on the two twisting parameters and the values of tau for the two companion knots. We also include some notes on bordered Heegaard Floer homology that may serve as a useful introduction to the subject.

A type D structure in Khovanov homology

We describe the first part of a gluing theory for the bigraded Khovanov homology with integer coefficients. This part associates a type D structure to a tangle properly embedded in a half-space and proves that the homotopy class of the type D structure is an invariant of the isotopy class of the tangle. Twisted Mazur pattern satellite knots and bordered Floer theory

We use bordered Floer theory to study properties of twisted Mazur pattern satellite knots $Q_{n}(K)$. We prove that $Q_n(K)$ is not Floer homologically thin, with two exceptions. We calculate the 3-genus of $Q_{n}(K)$ in terms of the twisting parameter $n$ and the 3-genus of the companion $K$, and we determine when $Q_n(K)$ is fibered. As an application to our results on Floer thickness and 3-genus, we verify the Cosmetic Surgery Conjecture for many of these satellite knots.

The Kanenobu knots and Khovanov-Rozansky homology

Kanenobu has given infinite families of knots with the same HOMFLY polynomials. We show that these knots also have the same sl(n) and HOMFLY homologies, thus giving the first example of an infinite family of knots undistinguishable by these invariants. This is a consequence of a structure theorem about the homologies of knots obtained by twisting up the ribbon of a ribbon knot with one ribbon.

A type A structure in Khovanov Homology

Inspired by bordered Floer homology, we describe a type A structure on a Khovanov homology for a tangle, which complements the type D structure in a previous paper. The type A structure is a differential module over a certain algebra. This can be paired with the type D structure to recover the Khovanov chain complex. The homotopy type of the type A structure is a tangle invariant, and homotopy equivalences of the type A structure result in chain homotopy equivalences on the Khovanov chain complex.
