We present an analysis of top-antitop quark production and decay into a tau lepton, tau neutrino, and bottom quark using data from $9 {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at the Collider Detector at Fermilab.
Dilepton events, where one lepton is an energetic electron or muon and the other a hadronically-decaying tau lepton, originating from proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV$ are used. A top-antitop quark production cross section of $8.1 \pm 2.1 {\rm pb}$ is measured, assuming standard-model top-quark decays. By separately identifying for the first time the single-tau and the ditau components, we measure the branching fraction of the top quark into tau lepton, tau neutrino, and bottom quark to be $(9.6 \pm 2.8) %$. The branching fraction of top-quark decays into a charged Higgs boson and a bottom quark, which would imply violation of lepton universality, is limited to be less than $5.9%$ at $95%$ confidence level.
Combined results are presented on the search for a neutral Higgs boson in the di-tau final state using 1.8fb-1 and 2.2fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected at the CDF and D0 experiments respectively. Data were collected in ppbar collisions at a centre of mass energy of 1.96TeV during RunII of the Tevatron. Limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio ranging from 13.6pb to 0.653pb for Higgs masses from 90GeV to 200GeV respectively. The results are then interpreted as limits in four different benchmark scenarios within the framework of the MSSM.
In Run II of the CDF experiment, traditional dilepton triggers are enriched by lepton (electrons or muons) plus track, di-tau and tau plus missing transverse energy triggers at Level-3 dedicated to physical processes including tau leptons. We describe these triggers, along with their physics motivations, implementation and cross-sections and report on their initial performance.
We present the results of a search for new particles decaying to tau pairs using the data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 195 pb^-1 collected from March 2002 to September 2003 with the CDF detector at the Tevatron. Hypothetical particles, such as Zprime and MSSM Higgs bosons can potentially produce the tau pair final state. We discuss the method of tau identification, and show the signal acceptance versus new particle mass. The low-mass region, dominated by Z -> tau tau, is used as a control region. In the high-mass region, we expect 2.8 +/- 0.5 events from known background source…
We present the first exclusive observation of the ttbar to hadronic tau + jets decay channel. Using these events from 1.96 TeV ppbar collisions at CDF, we measure the ttbar cross section as well as the top quark mass. Events require a single hadronic tau, large missing transverse energy, and exactly 4 jets of which at least one must be tagged as a b jet. The cross section measurement is extracted from a Poisson likelihood function based on the observed number of events and the predicted number of signal and background events for a given ttbar cross section. The mass is extracted from a likelih…
We present recent W and charged lepton asymmetry measurements from the CDF and D0 experiments. Theoretical predictions agree with the CDF W asymmetry, measured using a new matrix element technique. These theoretical predictions are less consistent with the latest lepton asymmetry measurements from D0 and CDF, especially for high charged lepton transverse momentum.
The study of processes containing tau leptons in the final state will play an important role at Tevatron Run II. Such final states will be relevant both for electroweak studies and measurements as well as in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. The present paper discuss the physics opportunities and challenges related to the implementation of new set of triggers able to select events containing tau candidates in the final state. We illustrate, in particular, the physics capabilities for a variety of new physics scenarios such as supersymmetry (SUSY), SUSY with R-parity violation, wi…
We present a search for chargino-neutralino associated production using like electric charge dilepton events collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV. One lepton is identified as the hadronic decay of a tau lepton, while the other is an electron or muon. In data corresponding to 6.0 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, we obtain good agreement with standard model predictions, and set limits on the chargino-neutralino production cross section for simplified gravity- and gauge-mediated models. As an example, assuming that t…
In the Collider Detector at Fermilab, CDF, we have measured central exclusive production, p+pbar --> p+X+pbar, where X is a pair of leptons or photons and nothing else. In this talk I focus on central masses M(X) > 8 GeV/c2. We measured QED production photon+photon --> e+e-,mu+mu- up to M(l+l-) = 75 GeV/c2, and candidates for photoproduction of Upsilons, photon+pomeron --> Y(1S),Y(2S),Y(3S). I report a search for exclusive photoproduction of Z-bosons, and the status of searches for exclusive two-photons: p+pbar --> p+gamma+gamma+pbar. These measurements constrain the cross section sigma(p+p to…
We combine results from CDF and D0 on direct searches for a standard model (SM) Higgs boson (H) in ppbar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. Compared to the previous Higgs Tevatron combination, more data and new channels (WH to tau nu b bbar, VH to tau tau b bbar/jj tau tau,VH to jj b bbar, t tbar H to t tbar b bbar) have been added. Most previously used channels have been reanalyzed to gain sensitivity. We use the latest parton distribution functions and gg to H theoretical cross sections when comparing our limits to the SM predictions. With 2.0-3.6 fb-1 of data analyzed …
We report an evidence of \textit{s}-channel single top quark production in $p\bar{p}$ collision at $\sqrt{s}= 1.96 \mathrm{TeV}$ using data with integrated luminosity of $9.4 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). We select events with one charged lepton, large missing transverse energy and two bottom quark jets. The observed significance of the result is 3.8 standard deviation from background only prediction. We measure the inclusive cross section to be $1.41^{+0.44}_{-0.42}\mathrm{(stat+syst)} \mathrm{pb}$ assuming $m_t = 172.5 \mathrm{GeV}/c^2$.
We report two complementary measurements of the WW+WZ cross section in the final state consisting of an electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and jets, performed using p\bar{p} collision data at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector. The first method uses the dijet invariant mass distribution while the second more sensitive method uses matrix-element calculations. The result from the second method has a signal significance of 5.4 sigma and is the first observation of WW+WZ production using this signature. Combining the results gives sigma_{WW+WZ} = 16.0 +/- 3.3 pb, in agre…
This thesis presents the evidence, at 3.08 sigma, for the associate production of massive vector bosons (W and Z) in a final state with one lepton, MET and HF-tagged jets, measured with the complete CDF II dataset (9.4fb^-1 of data). The signals, both inclusive diboson production and WW vs WZ/ZZ separately, were extracted from the invariant mass distribution, M_inv(jet1,jet2), of single and double HF-tagged jet pairs. For single-tagged events the b quark vs c quark discrimination was obtained by using a bi-dimensional distribution M_inv(jet1,jet2) vs a flavor-serapator NN. The results, consist…
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson in data collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45/fb. In events consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z boson to electron or muon pairs, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the ZH production cross section times the H -> bb branching ratio as a function of Higgs boson mass. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c^2 we observe (expect) a limit of 7.1 (3.9) times the standard model value.
We present a measurement of the top-quark pair production cross-section in proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV. The data were collected at the Fermilab Tevatron by the CDF II detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 8.8 fb$^{-1}$, representing the complete CDF Run II data set. We select events consistent with the production of top-quark pairs by requiring the presence of two reconstructed leptons, an imbalance in the total event transverse momentum, and jets. At least one jet is required to be identified as consistent with the fragmentation of a bottom quark using…
We present a measurement of the mass of the top quark from proton-antiproton collisions recorded at the CDF experiment in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron. We analyze events from the single lepton plus jets final state ($t\bar t\to W^+bW^-\bar b\to lνb q \bar q'\bar b$). The top quark mass is extracted using a direct calculation of the probability density that each event corresponds to the $t\bar t$ final state. The probability is a function of both the mass of the top quark and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets, which is constrained {\it in situ} by the hadronic $W$ boson mass. Using 16…
We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a vector boson in the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb$^{-1}$. We consider events having no identified charged lepton, a transverse energy imbalance, and two or three jets, of which at least one is consistent with originating from the decay of a $b$ quark. We place 95% credibility level upper limits on the production cross section times standard model branching fraction f…
We present a search for WW and WZ production in final states that contain a charged lepton (electron or muon) and at least two jets, produced in sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV ppbar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron, using data corresponding to 1.2 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector. Diboson production in this decay channel has yet to be observed at hadron colliders due to the large single W plus jets background. An artificial neural network has been developed to increase signal sensitivity, as compared with an event selection based on conventional cuts. We set a 95% confid…
We present a search for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays into three leptons (electrons or muons) using 782 fb^-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. No evidence for these decays is observed and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions between 1.5 x 10^-8 and 2.7 x 10^-8.
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a W boson in sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar collision data collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb-1. In events consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the W boson to an electron or muon and a neutrino, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the WH production cross section times the H->bb branching ratio as a function of Higgs boson mass. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c2 we observe (expect) a limit of 4.9 (2.8) t…
We present a measurement of the mass of the top quark using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9fb^-1 of ppbar collisions collected at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV with the CDF II detector at Fermilab's Tevatron. This is the first measurement of the top quark mass using top-antitop pair candidate events in the lepton + jets and dilepton decay channels simultaneously. We reconstruct two observables in each channel and use a non-parametric kernel density estimation technique to derive two-dimensional probability density functions from simulated signal and background samples. The observables…
This Letter reports a search for a narrow resonant state decaying into two $W$ bosons and a bottom-antibottom quark pair where one $W$ boson decays leptonically and the other decays into a quark-antiquark pair. The search is particularly sensitive to top-antitop resonant production. We use the full data sample of proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb$^{-1}$. No evidence for resonant production is found and upper limits on the production cross section tim…
We present a measurement of the mass of the top quark from ppbar collisions at 1.96 TeV observed with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) at the Fermilab Tevatron Run II. The events have the decay signature of ppbar to ttbar in the lepton plus jets channel in which at least one jet is identified as coming from a secondary vertex and therefore a b-hadron. The largest systematic uncertainty, the jet energy scale (JES), is convoluted with the statistical error using an in-situ measurement of the hadronic W boson mass. We calculate a likelihood for each event using leading-order ttbar and W+je…
The leptonic asymmetry in semileptonic ttbar decays is measured with the CDF detector using the full Tevatron Run II dataset, which corresponds to 9.4 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity. The measured asymmetry is extrapolated to the full kinematic range and the measured value of A_FB^lep = 0.094^+0.032_-0.029 is compared to the NLO prediction A_FB^lep = 0.038 +/- 0.003.
We present additional studies of the kinematics of the anomalous events observed by the CDF experiment. These events contain a high-$p_T$ lepton, large transverse missing energy ($\MET$), and 2 or 3 high-$E_T$ jets, one of which contains both a displaced secondary vertex and a soft lepton. Previous articles detailed the selection and the kinematic properties of these events. In the present paper, we use several phenomenological approaches to model these data and to estimate their production cross section.
We search for lepton flavor and lepton number violating tau decays into a lepton (ell = electron or muon) and two charged mesons (h,h' = pi^\pm or K^\pm), tau- -> ell-h+h'- and tau- -> ell+h-h'-, using 671 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain 90% C.L. upper limits on the branching fractions in the range (4.4-8.8)x10^{-8} for tau -> ehh', and (3.3-16)x10^{-8} for tau -> muhh' processes. These results improve upon previously published upper limits by factors between 1.6 to 8.8.
The chargino-neutralino production with subsequent leptonic decays is one of the most promising supersymmetry (SUSY) signatures at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider. We present the most recent results on the search for the three-lepton and missing-transverse-energy SUSY signature using 3.2 fb-1 of data collected with the CDF II detector. The results are interpreted within the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) scenario.
We measure the mass of the tau lepton to be 1775.1+-1.6(stat)+-1.0(syst.) MeV using tau pairs from Z0 decays. To test CPT invariance we compare the masses of the positively and negatively charged tau leptons. The relative mass difference is found to be smaller than 3.0 10^-3 at the 90% confidence level.
We present results of a search at CDF in 929 pb-1 of ppbar collisions at 1.96 TeV for the anomalous production of events containing a high-transverse momentum charged lepton (either electron or muon) and photon, accompanied by missing transverse energy (MET), and/or additional leptons and photons, and jets (X). We use the same selection criteria as in a previous CDF Run I search, but with an order-magnitude larger data set, a higher ppbar collision energy, and the CDF II detector. We find 163 Lepton + Photon + MET + X events, compared to an expectation of 150.6+-13.0 events. We observe 74 Mult…
Using almost 10 million B Bbar decays produced at CESR, the CLEO collaboration has set the most stringent limits to date on the lepton flavor violating decays B0 to mu(e) tau.
We summarize some of the the most recent CDF and DO results from the 1992-1995 collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron. These include a detailed examination of the heavy flavor content of W+jet data made by CDF.We found in this study that the rate and the kinematic properties of the event subsample, featuring soft lepton and secondary vertex in the same jet, are statistically difficult to accommodate with the Standard Model simulation. CDF has also searched for new physics in events with a photon, a lepton and missing transverse energy. Finally, the results of the two collaborations in their sea…
We search for pair production of doubly charged Higgs particles followed by decays into electron-tau and muon-tau pairs using data (350 inverse picobarns) collected from proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV by the CDF II experiment. We search separately for cases where three or four final-state leptons are detected, and combine results for exclusive decays to left-handed electron-tau (muon-tau) pairs. We set a lower mass limit of 114 (112) GeV/cc at the 95% confidence level for left-handed doubly charged Higgs.
The production of tau leptons in ep collisions is investigated using data recorded by the H1 detector at HERA in the period 1994-2000. Tau leptons are identified by detecting their decay products, using leptonic and hadronic decay modes. The cross section for the production of tau lepton pairs is measured for the first time at HERA. Furthermore, a search for events with an energetic isolated tau lepton and with large missing transverse momentum is performed. The results are found to be in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.
Searches for lepton-flavor-violating decay of a tau lepton to a lighter mass lepton and a photon have been performed with the entire dataset of (963 +- 7) x 10^6 tau decays collected by the BaBar detector near the Upsilon(4S), Upsilon(3S) and Upsilon(2S) resonances. The searches yield no evidence of signals and we set upper limits on the branching fractions of BR(tau -> e gamma) < 3.3 x 10^-8 and BR(tau -> mu gamma) < 4.4 x 10^-8 at 90% confidence level.
The electromagnetic and weak dipole moments of the Tau-lepton have been measured by experiments at e+e- colliders. Data samples of e+e- --> tau+tau-, e+e- --> tau+tau- gamma and e+e- --> e+e-tau+tau- events collected at centre-of-mass energies between 10 and 200 GeV are used. No deviation from the Standard Model is found. Limits on the moments are summarised from the most recent results.
We present the non-standard model Higgs boson searches at both DO and CDF experiments. We concentrate on three topics, reported by DO and CDF recently: the searches for the minimal supersymmetric Higgs boson using pp--> hbb --> bbbb and pp --> hX --> tau tau X, and for long-lived doubly charged Higgs boson.
We present results of the search for the super-symmetric partner of the top quark, the stop quark, decaying to a b-quark and chargino with the subsequent chargino decay into a neutralino, lepton and neutrino. Using the data sample corresponding to 2.7 inv fb of integrated luminosity, collected with the CDF Detector of the Tevatron collider, we reconstruct the stop mass of candidate events and set 95% C. L. upper limits on masses of the stop quark, chargino and neutralino and the branching ratio of chargino to neutralino+lepton+neutrino.
We present a measurement of the top quark mass in the lepton+jets and dilepton channels of $t\bar{t}$ decays using the template method. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb$^{-1}$ of $p\bar{p}$ collisions at Tevatron with $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV, collected with the CDF II detector. The measurement is performed by constructing templates of three kinematic variables in the lepton+jets and two kinematic variables in the dilepton channel. The variables are two reconstructed top quark masses from different jets-to-quarks combinations and the invariant mass of two jets from …
Using 4.68 fb^{-1} of e^+e^- annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector we have studied tau radiative decays tau --> mu nu nu gamma and tau --> e nu nu gamma. For a 10 MeV minimum photon energy in the tau rest frame, the branching fraction of a tau radiatively decaying to a muon is measured to be (3.61+-0.16+-0.35)*10^{-3}, and to an electron is (1.75+-0.06+-0.17)*10^{-2}. The branching fractions are in agreement with the Standard Model theoretical predictions. All quoted results are preliminary.
Searches for lepton flavor violating tau -> l gamma, tau -> lll and tau -> lhh decays at the BaBar experiment are presented. Upper limits on the branching ratios are obtained at the level of 10^{-7} at 90% confidence level.
We report on recent measurements of the top quark mass using t t-bar candidate events selected in ~320/pb of data from the "Run II" operation period of the Tevatron p p-bar collider. More emphasis is given on the best single measurement to date Mtop = 173.5 +3.9 -3.8 GeV/c^2, provided by CDF using the "lepton plus jets" channel, where one W decays to a lepton-neutrino pair and the other into quarks (top quarks decay to Wb almost 100% of the time).
We report preliminary results from the analyses looking for top candidates in the channel with 6 jets in the final state (all hadronic) and in the dilepton channel with one tau lepton (tau dilepton), using a data sample of 110 pb^{-1} collected by the CDF experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider.
At the Fermilab Tevatron, the CDF detector is used to study diboson production in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV. We report recent diboson production measurements, limits on anomalous triple gauge couplings and latest results from semi-leptonic diboson searches.
We present a measurement of the ratio of the top-quark branching fractions $R=\mathcal{B}(t\rightarrow Wb)/\mathcal{B}(t\rightarrow Wq)$, where $q$ represents quarks of type $b$, $s$, or $d$, in the final state with a lepton and hadronic jets. The measurement uses $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV proton--antiproton collision data from 8.7 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during Run II of the Tevatron. We simultaneously measure $R=0.94 \pm 0.09$ (stat+syst), the $t\bar{t}$ production cross section $σ_{t \bar t} = 7.5 \pm 1.0$ (stat+syst) pb. The magnitude…
The article describes the identification of hadronically decaying tau leptons in ppbar collisions at 1.96 TeV collected by the DZero detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. After a brief description of the motivations and the challenges of considering tau leptons in high energy hadronic collisions, details of the tau reconstruction and identification will be discussed. The challenges associated for tau energy measurements in an hadronic environment will be presented including approaches to deal with such measurements.
The presence of tau leptons in the final state is an important signature in many Higgs boson and SUSY searches. With the ATLAS detector, hadronically decaying tau leptons can be reconstructed in a wide range of transverse energies. The reconstruction algorithm for hadronically decaying tau leptons is explained and the performance of tau lepton identification is shown. Particularly important is the discrimination of hadronically decaying tau leptons against overwhelming backgrounds from QCD jets.
Using 4.68 fb^{-1} of e^+e^- annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) we have studied tau radiative decays tau -> mu nu nu gamma and tau -> e nu nu gamma. For a 10 MeV minimum photon energy in the tau rest frame, the branching fraction of radiative tau decay to a muon or electron is measured to be (3.61+-0.16+-0.35)*10^{-3} or (1.75+-0.06+-0.17)*10^{-2}, respectively. The branching fractions are in agreement with the Standard Model theoretical predictions.
The tau lepton lifetime is measured with the L3 detector at LEP using the complete data taken at centre-of-mass energies around the Z pole resulting in tau_tau = 293.2 +/- 2.0 (stat) +/- 1.5 (syst) fs. The comparison of this result with the muon lifetime supports lepton universality of the weak charged current at the level of six per mille. Assuming lepton universality, the value of the strong coupling constant, alpha_s is found to be alpha_s(m_tau^2) = 0.319 +/- 0.015(exp.) +/- 0.014 (theory).
Hadronically decaying tau leptons are of prime importance in numerous physics analyses in ATLAS. The spectrum of the possible applications of hadronically decaying tau leptons reaches from Standard Model measurements, including Higgs searches, to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. The basic principles behind the sophisticated tau reconstruction and identification techniques, which are specifically designed to identify hadronically decaying taus and reject various background processes, are delineated here along with current data-driven estimates of their respective performance.
We search for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays into a lepton (electron or muon) and an f0(980) meson using 671 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. No events are observed and we set the following 90% C.L. upper limits on the branching fraction products: B(tau- -> e-f0(980))*B(f0(980)->pi+pi-)<3.2x10^-8 and B(tau- -> mu-f0(980))*B(f0(980) -> pi+pi-)<3.4x10^-8. This is the first search performed for these modes.
Tau leptons play an important role in the physics program at the LHC. They are used in searches for new phenomena like the Higgs boson or Supersymmetry and in electroweak measurements. Identifying hadronically decaying tau leptons with good performance is an essential part of these analyses. We present the current status of the tau reconstruction and identification at the LHC with the ATLAS detector. The tau identification efficiencies and their systematic uncertainties are measured using W to tau nu and Z to tau tau events, and compared with the predictions from Monte Carlo simulations.
A new measurement of the mean lifetime of the tau lepton is presented. Three different analysis methods are applied to a sample of 90000 tau pairs, collected in 1993 and 1994 with the ALEPH detector at LEP. The average of this measurement and those previously published by ALEPH is tau_tau = 290.1 +- 1.5 +- 1.1 fs.
Tau-pair production in the process e+e- -> e+e-tau+tau- was studied using data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP2 during the years 1997 - 2000. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 650 pb^{-1}. The values of the cross-section obtained are found to be in agreement with QED predictions. Limits on the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of the tau lepton are deduced.
We present the most recent searches for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays in BaBar. We find no evidence of tau decaying to three charged leptons or to a charged lepton and a neutral meson (KS, rho, phi, K*0, anti-K*0), and set upper limits on the corresponding branching fractions between 1.8 and 19 times 10-8 at 90% confidence level.
The results based on 1992-95 data (Run 1) from the CDF and DO experiments on the measurements of the W boson mass and width are presented, along with the combined results. We report a Tevatron collider average M_W = 80.456 +- 0.059 GeV. We also report the Tevatron collider average of the directly measured W boson width Gamma_W = 2.115 +- 0.105 GeV. We describe a new joint analysis of the direct W mass and width measurements. Assuming the validity of the standard model, we combine the directly measured W boson width with the width extracted from the ratio of W and Z boson leptonic partial cross…
We have searched for five decay modes of the tau lepton that simultaneously violate lepton and baryon number: tau -> anti-proton gamma, tau -> anti-proton pi0, tau -> anti-proton eta, tau -> anti-proton 2pi0, and tau -> anti-proton pi0eta. The data used in the search were collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). The integrated luminosity of the data sample is 4.7 fb^{-1}, corresponding to the production of 4.3 x 10^6 tau+tau- events. No evidence is found for any of the decays, resulting in much improved upper limits on the branching fractions for the two…
Decays that are highly suppressed in the standard model are excellent places to search for effects of new physics. Decays mediated by flavor-changing neutral currents are forbidden at tree level in the SM, and are often further suppressed by helicity and the Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani mechanism. Exclusive final states with charged lepton pairs are a particular strength of the CDF experiment due to the large bottom and charm production cross section and the ability to efficiently separate signal from background. CDF has searched for and set the world's best limits on the rare flavor-changing neu…
We present a novel method for the reconstruction of events containing pairs of hadronically decaying tau leptons at collider experiments. This method relies on accurate knowledge of the tau production vertex and precise measurement of its charged decay products. The method makes no assumptions about the centre-of-mass or invariant mass of the tau pair, and is insensitive to momentum loss along the beam direction. We demonstrate the method using e+e- -> mu+ mu- tau+ tau- events fully simulated in the ILD detector.
A first measurement of the average polarisation P_tau of tau leptons produced in e+e- annihilation at energies significantly above the Z resonance is presented. The polarisation is determined from the kinematic spectra of tau hadronic decays. The measured value P_tau = -0.164 +/- 0.125 is consistent with the Standard Model prediction for the mean LEP energy of 197 GeV.
Decays of B mesons to states involving tau leptons can be used as a tool to search for the effects of new physics, such as those involving a charged Higgs boson. The experimental status of the decays B -> tau nu and B -> D^(*) tau nu is discussed, together with limits on new physics effects from current results.
We search for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays into three leptons (electron or muon) using 535 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. No evidence for these decays is observed, and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of (2.0-4.1)x10^-8. These results improve upon our previously published upper limits by factors of 4.9 to 10.
