The physical properties of self-flux grown EuPd2As2 single crystals have been investigated by magnetization M, magnetic susceptibility chi, specific heat Cp, and electrical resistivity rho measurements versus temperature T and magnetic field H. The crystal structure was determined by powder x-ray diffraction measurements, which confirmed the ThCr2Si2-type body-centered tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm) reported previously. The rho(T) data indicate that state of EuPd2As2 is metallic. Long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering is apparent from the chi(T), Cp(T), and rho(T) measurements. For H \parallel c the chi(T) indicates two transitions at TN1 = 11.0 K and TN2 = 5.5 K, whereas for H \perp c only one transition is observed at TN1 = 11.0 K. Between TN1 and TN2 the anisotropic chi(T) data suggest a planar noncollinear AFM structure, whereas at T < TN2 the chi(T) and M(H,T) data suggest a spin reorientation transition in which equal numbers of spins cant in opposite directions out of the ab plane. We estimate the critical field at 2 K at which all Eu moments become aligned with the field to be about 22 T. The magnetic entropy at 25 K estimated from the Cp(T) measurements is about $11\%$ smaller than expected, possibly due to an inaccuracy in the lattice heat capacity contribution. An upturn in rho at T < TN1 suggests superzone energy gap formation below TN1. This behavior of rho(T < TN1) is not sensitive to applied magnetic fields up to H = 12 T.
Infinite-layer (IL) nickelates are an emerging family of superconductors whose similarities and differences to cuprate superconductors are under intense debate. To date, the IL phase of nickelates can only be reached via topotactic oxygen reduction of the perovskite phase, using H$_2$ gas or reducing agents such as CaH$_2$. While the topotactic reduction method has been widely employed on thin film and polycrystalline powder samples, the reduction of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$NiO$_3$ single-crystals with lateral dimensions up to 150 $μ$m was achieved only recently, using an indirect contact method with …
We have grown the single crystal of PrRhAl$_4$Si$_2$, which crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal structure. From the low temperature physical property measurements like, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and electrical resistivity, we found that this compound does not show any magnetic ordering down to 70~mK. Our crystal field calculations on the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements reveal that the 9-fold degenerate $(2J+1)$ levels of Pr atom in PrRhAl$_4$Si$_2$, splits into 7 levels, with a singlet ground state and a well separated excited doublet state…
Recently, new Cr-based superconductors, A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ (A = K, Rb, Cs), have gained a strong interest because of their one-dimensional crystal structures and electron correlations. Here we report the crystal structure and physical properties of two related materials ACr$_3$As$_3$ (A = Rb, Cs) which are synthesized via a soft-chemical A+ deintercalation in A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. The new compounds remain one-dimensional (Cr$_3$As$_3$)$_{\infty}$ linear chains, and the interchain distance can be tuned by the incorporation of the alkali-metal cations with different sizes. The physical-property meas…
High quality large Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_6$(La-Bi2201) single crystals have been successfully grown by the traveling solvent floating zone technique. The samples are characterized by compositional and structural analyzes and their physical properties are investigated by magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements. Superconducting samples with sharp superconducting transitions are obtained covering a wide range of doping from overdoped (x<0.40), optimally-doped (x~0.40), underdoped (0.40<x<0.84) to heavily underdoped without superconducting transition (x>0.84). Crystals as large…
Single crystals of the new ternary compound Ce2Ga12Pt were prepared by the self-flux technique. The crystal structure with the space group P4/nbm was established from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and presents a derivative of the LaGa6Ni0.6 prototype. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show Curie-Weiss behaviour due to local Ce^3+ moments. At high temperatures, the magnetic anisotropy is dominated by the crystal-electric-field (CEF) effect with the easy axis along the crystallographic c direction. Ce2Ga12Pt undergoes two antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T_N,1 = 7.3K and T_N,2 =…
Heat capacity experiments, crystal structure determination and transmission electron microscopy have been carried out on U3Cu3Sn4 single-crystals. U3Cu3Sn4 was confirmed to be a heavy-fermion antiferromagnet (TN=13(1) K) with a low temperature electronic heat capacity coefficient gamma=390 mJ/molUK2. Low temperature heat capacity experiments on a U3Ni3Sn4 single-crystal indicate that below 0.4 K there is a crossover between the previously observed non-Fermi liquid behavior and a Fermi liquid state.
We present data on the anisotropic magnetic properties, heat capacity and transport properties of CeGe2-x (x = 0.24) single crystals. The electronic coefficient of the heat capacity, gamma ~ 110 mJ/mol K^2, is enhanced; three magnetic transitions, with critical temperatures of ~ 7 K, ~ 5 K, and ~ 4 K are observed in thermodynamic and transport measurements. The ground state has a small ferromagnetic component along the c - axis. Small applied field, below 10 kOe, is enough to bring the material to an apparent saturated paramagnetic state (with no further metamagnetic transitions up to 55 kOe) …
Measurements of physical properties show that Yb enters the single crystals systematically and in registry with the nominal Yb concentration x of the starting material dissolved in the molten indium flux.
A high-quality single crystal of Ce3Pt23Si11 has been grown using the Czochralski method. The crystal structure is presented and the chemical composition has been checked using an electron microprobe analyzer. Measurements of the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility performed at low temperature show a ferromagnetic transition at Tc = 0.44 K.
We present dielectric measurements of the colossal dielectric constant material CaCu3Ti4O12 extending up to 1.3 GHz also covering so far only rarely investigated single crystalline samples. Special emphasis is put on the second relaxation reported in several works on polycrystals, which we detect also in single crystals. For polycrystalline samples we provide a recipe to achieve values of the dielectric constant as high as in single crystals.
The lineshape of crystal-field transitions in single crystals of Mn12ac molecular magnets is determined by the magnetic history. The absorption lines are symmetric and Gaussian for the non-magnetized state obtained by zero-field cooling (zfc). In the magnetized state which is reached when the sample is cooled in a magnetic field (fc), however, they are asymmetric even in the absence of an external magnetic field. These observations are quantitatively explained by inhomogeneous symmetrical (Gaussian) broadening of the crystal-field transitions combined with a contribution of off-diagonal compon…
Centimeter-sized single crystals of Sr$_{1.5}$La$_{0.5}$RhO$_{4}$ were grown by the floating zone method at oxygen pressures of 20~bar. The quality of our single crystals was confirmed by X-ray Laue, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction, neutron and X-ray absorbtion spectroscopy measurements. At $\sim$50% electron doping we observe RhO$_3$ octahedral rotations of $\sim$8.2$^{\circ}$ within the octahedral basal plane which are incompatible with space group I4/mmm. Our single crystal was further characterized by susceptibility, electrical transport and, finally, specific heat measurements…
Compounds with a Kagome type lattice are known to exhibit magnetic frustration. Large single crystals of two compounds Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8, which are variants of a Kagome net lattice, have been grown successfully by the floating zone technique using an optical image furnace. The single crystals are of high quality and exhibit intriguing magnetic properties.
Single crystal growth of several rare earth hexaborides has been carried out by the floating zone technique. A high power Xenon arc lamp image furnace was used for the crystal growth. Large high quality crystals of LaB$_{6}$, CeB$_{6}$, PrB$_{6}$ and NdB$_{6}$, about 1 cc in volume have been obtained. Crystals of all these compounds have also been grown using enriched $^{11}$B isotope for use in neutron scattering experiments.
The magnetic investigations as a function of temperature and magnetic field for the rubidium neodymium double tungstate RbNd(WO4)2 single crystal have been performed. The magnetization was measured in the temperature range from 4.2 to 100 K and for the magnetic field up to 1.5 T. The crystal field and exchange parameters were found.
The magnetization of single crystal SrRuO3 is studied as a function of temperature along different crystallographic directions. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy and behavior near the critical transition temperature are analyzed in detail. The magnetization vs temperature is found to vary more like $T^2$ rather than $T^{3/2}$ expected for spin waves.
Millimeter-sized single crystals of LaFeAsO, LaFeAsO1-xFx, and LaFe1-xCoxAsO were grown in NaAs flux at ambient pressure. The detailed growth procedure and crystal characterizations are reported. The as-grown crystals have typical dimensions of 3 * 4 * 0.05-0.3 mm3 with the crystallographic c-axis perpendicular to the plane of the plate-like single crystals. Some crystals manifest linear dimensions as large as 4-5 mm. X-ray and neutron single crystal scattering confirmed that LaFeAsO crystals exhibit a structural phase transition at Ts ~ 154 K and a magnetic phase transition at TSDW ~ 140 K. T…
We report the synthesis, and structural and physical properties of CaFe4As3 single crystals. Needle-like single crystals of CaFe4As3 were grown out of Sn flux and the compound adopts an orthorhombic structure as determined by X-ray diffraction measurements. Electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties indicate that the system undergoes two successive phase transitions occurring at TN1 ~ 90 K and TN2 ~ 26 K. At TN1, electrical resistivities (ρ(b) and ρ(ac)) are enhanced while magnetic susceptibilities (χ(b) and χ(ac)) are reduced in both directions parallel and perpendicular to the b-axis, cons…
Transition metal halides can host a large variety of novel phenomena, such as magnetism in the monolayer limit, quantum spin liquid and spiral spin liquid states, and topological magnons and phonons. Sizeable high quality single crystals are necessary for investigations of magnetic and lattice excitations by, for example, inelastic neutron scattering. In this paper, we review a less well-known vapor transport technique, self-selecting vapor growth, and report our growths of transition metal halides using this technique. We report the growth and characterizations of sizable single crystals of R…
In this Comment, we explain the reason for the discrepancy between two sets of tunneling data obtained on Ni- and Zn-doped Bi2212 single crystals (presented in H. Hancotte et al., Phys. Rev. B 55, R3410 (1997) and A. Mourachkine, to be published in J. of Superconductivity, cond-mat/9902355).
We report single crystal growth and physical properties characterization of YbFe$_2$Al$_{10}$ compounds. The measurements of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat show different behaviors from previous studies on polycrystal samples. A mixed valent characteristic with moderate mass enhancement is indicated. In particular, the optical spectroscopy measurement reveals formation of multiple hybridization energy gaps which become progressively pronounced at low temperature. The multiple hybridization energy gaps are likely caused by the hybridizations between the flat band from Y…
We report the optimized conditions for growing the high quality single crystals of candidate quantum spin-ice Pr2Hf2O7 using the optical floating-zone method. Large single crystals of Pr2Hf2O7 have been grown under different growth conditions using a four-mirror type optical floating-zone furnace and their microscopic structural differences have been probed by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (SXRD). The SXRD data reveal that the crystals grown under fowing argon (~ 2 L/h) atmosphere with slightly off-stoichiometric (optimized) starting composition yields the highest quality cryst…

We have successfully grown cm3-size single crystals of the metallic-ferromagnet Sm2Mo2O7 by the floating-zone method using an infrared-red image furnace. The growth difficulties and the remedies found using a 2-mirror image furnace are discussed. Magnetization studies along the three crystalline axes of the compound are presented and discussed based on our recent proposal of an ordered spin-ice ground state for this compound
Recent theoretical and experimental findings suggest that the long-known but not well understood low temperature resistance plateau of SmB6 may originate from protected surface states arising from a topologically non-trivial bulk band structure having strong Kondo hybridization. Yet other studies have ascribed this feature to impurity phases, sample vacancies, and surface reconstructions. Given the typical methods used to prepare SmB6 single crystals, the flux and floating zone procedures, these ascriptions should not be taken lightly. Here, we demonstrate how compositional variations and obse…
We report the synthesis of EuPtIn$_{4}$ single crystalline platelets by the In-flux technique. This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm structure with lattice parameters $a=4.542(1)$ Å, $b=16.955(2)$ Å$\,$ and $c=7.389(1)$ Å. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and electron spin resonance (ESR) reveal that EuPtIn$_{4}$ is a metallic Curie-Weiss paramagnet at high temperatures and presents antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below $T_{N}=13.3$ K. In addition, we observe a successive anomaly at $T^{*} = 12.6$ K and a spin-flop transition at $H_…
A series of polycrystalline samples of Sr2-xIrO4 have been synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure of this doped system can be explained on the basis of the extended nature of 5d electrons and strontium vacancies in Sr2-xIrO4. The analysis of the temperature-dependent resistance of these samples reveals the semiconducting feature, where three dimensional variable range hopping behavior is observed at temperatures lower than 120K, Arrhenius type in intermediate temperatures from 140K to 200K, and two-dimensional (2D) weak localization at high temperatures from 220K t…
The structure of Nd$_{1-x}$Pb$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ crystals is determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Substitution of Pb at the Nd site results in structural phase change from tetragonal (x = 0.25) to cubic (x = 0.37). These changes are attributed to the progressive removal of inter-octahedral tilting and minimization of the octahedral distortion leading to a higher symmetry as doping concentration increases. While the unit cell volume of tetragonal structure ($\it{P4/mmm}$) is comparable to that of parent NdMnO$_{3}$, the volume of cubic unit cell ($\it{Pm\bar{3}m}$) is doubled. Electron d…
Structural, magnetization, phonon behavior, and dielectric response of nano-crystalline Gd$_2$CoMnO$_6$ have been presented in this paper. The study shows that the material crystallizes in $\textit{P2$_1$/n}$ phase group of the monoclinic crystal structure. XPS measurement shows Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ oxidation states are present in the sample. Magnetization study reveals that the sample undergoes a ferromagnetic ordering of Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ magnetic ions around $T_c$ $\sim$132 K. However we have seen that with the application of external magnetic field the phase transition is largely …
High-quality single crystals of EuAuAs were studied by means of powder x-ray diffraction, magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance measurements. The compound crystallizes with a hexagonal structure of the ZrSiBe type (space group $P6_3/mmc$). It orders antiferromagnetically below 6 K due to the magnetic moments of divalent Eu ions. The electrical resistivity exhibits metallic behavior down to 40 K, followed by a sharp increase at low temperatures. The magnetotransport isotherms show a distinct metamagnetic-like transition in concert wi…
A new method to grow single crystals of skutterudite compounds is examined. Using a wedge-type, cubic-anvil, high-pressure apparatus, single crystals of CoP3 were grown from stoichiometric melts under a pressure of 3.5 GPa. Powder x-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis measurements indicate that the as-grown boules are a single phase of CoP3. The results suggest that CoP3 is a congruent melting compound under high pressure.
We theoretically report an instability toward a skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric magnets under hexagonal and trigonal single-ion anisotropy. The results are obtained for a minimal spin model with a crystal-dependent single-ion anisotropy on a triangular lattice by performing simulated annealing. By constructing magnetic phase diagrams in the presence of six different types of single-ion anisotropy while changing the amplitudes of external magnetic field and single-ion anisotropy in a systematic way, we find that the hexagonal and trigonal single-ion anisotropy becomes a source of the skyrmi…
We study the possibility of Wigner crystallization in both single- and and bi-layer graphene using a real space tight binding model. In addition to verifying our earlier prediction for single layer graphene, we predict that the bilayer graphene can undergo a Wigner crystal transition at low enough carrier density thus offering a possibility of tunable and bipolar Wigner crystal. We find that aside from the Coulomb interaction of the carriers of two layers that stabilizes the charge ordered state, so does the inter layer coupling.
