We investigate how local parity breaking (LPB) due to large topological fluctuations may affect hadron physics. A distorted dispersion relation is derived for the lightest vector mesons $ρ$ and $ω$. They are characterised by a mass splitting depending on their polarization. We present a detailed analysis of the angular distribution associated to the lepton pairs created from these mesons searching for polarization dependencies. Two angular variables are found to carry the main information related to the parity breaking effect. Possible signatures for experimental detection of local parity breaking that could potentially be seen by the PHENIX and STAR collaborations are discussed.
The like sign dileptons provide the most promising signature for superparticle search in a large category of $R$-parity violating SUSY models. We estimate the like sign dilepton signals at the Tevatron collider, predicted by these models, over a wide region of the MSSM parameter space. One expects an unambiguous signal upto a gluino mass of $200 - 300$ GeV ($\geq 500$ GeV) with the present (proposed) accumulated luminosity of $\sim 0.1~(1)~{\rm fb}^{-1}$.
Lepton number violation could be manifest in the sneutrino sector of supersymmetric extensions of the standard model with conserved R-parity. Then sneutrinos decay partly into the ``wrong sign charged lepton'' final state, if kinematically accessible. In sneutrino pair production or associated single sneutrino production, the signal then is a like sign dilepton final state. Under favourable circumstances, such a signal could be visible at the LHC or a next generation linear collider for a relative sneutrino mass-splitting of order ${\cal O}(0.001)$ and sneutrino width of order ${\cal O}$(1 GeV…
In the Standard Model (SM), dilepton production in hadron--hadron collisions proceeds through the conventional Drell--Yan mechanism $q \bar{q} \rightarrow l^+ l^-$ with the exchange of a gauge boson. Some extensions of the SM contain a quark--lepton contact interaction {\it via} a $q l ϕ$ Yukawa coupling, where $ϕ$ is a scalar. Theories with scalar leptoquarks and $R$--parity violating SUSY models are the most important examples of such extensions. These Yukawa couplings induce a different dynamical configuration compared to the SM ($t$-channel vs. $s$-channel) in the $q\bar{q} \rightarrow l^+…
We propose a novel explanation for the dilepton excess observed in heavy ion collisions at invariant masses below 1 GeV. We argue that the presence of local parity breaking due to a time-dependent isosinglet and/or isotriplet pseudoscalar condensate substantially modifies the dispersion relation of photons and vector mesons propagating in such a medium, changing the ρ~ spectral function and resulting in a potentially large excess of e+e- and μ+μ- with respect to the theoretical predictions based in a 'cocktail' of known hadronic processes. Possible signatures to prove or disprove this effect a…
At finite density parity can be spontaneously broken in strong interactions with far reaching implications. In particular, a time-dependent pseudoscalar background would modify QED by adding a Chern-Simons term to the lagrangian. As a striking consequence we propose a novel explanation for the dilepton excess observed in heavy ion collisions at low invariant masses. The presence of local parity breaking due to a time-dependent pseudoscalar condensate substantially modifies the dispersion relation of photons and vector mesons propagating in such a medium, changing the $ρ$ spectral function and …
We study $B$ physics phenomenology in the scenario of split supersymmetry without R-parity. By assuming the constraints of bilinear (trilinear) R-parity violating couplings, which are introduced to solve the problem of the atmospheric (solar) neutrino mass, we show that the decay branching ratios of $B_{s}\to \ell^{+} \ell^{-}$ and the mixing of $B_s-\bar{B}_s$ can be large. Explicitly, we find that $B(B_s\toμ^+μ^-)=O(10^{-7})$ and $Δm_{B_s}=O(10^{-9}) GeV$, which should be observed at future hadron colliders.
We propose that local parity breaking induced by a large-scale fluctuation of topological charge at large temperatures and/or condensation of pseudoscalar mesons in the isotriplet channel for large baryon densities may be responsible for the substantial dilepton excess that is found for low invariant masses and moderate values of $p_T$ in central heavy ions collisions. This insofar unexplained enhancement could be understood by a combination of two effects leading both to an excess of $e^+e^-$ and $μ^+ μ^-$ pairs with respect to theoretical predictions based on conventional hadronic processes:…
We investigate in detail the effects of the R-parity lepton number violation in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) on the parent process $pp \to e^+ e^- + X$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The numerical comparisons between the contributions of the R-parity violating effects to the parent process via the Drell-Yan subprocess and the gluon-gluon fusion are made. We find that the R-violating effects on $e^+ e^-$ pair production at the LHC could be significant. The results show that the cross section of the $ e^+ e^-$ pair productions via gluon-gluon collision at the LHC ca…
Production rates of dileptons and photons from the quark-gluon (QGP) phase are calculated taking into account effects of confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking (χSB) not far from the transition temperature $T_c$. We find that the production rates of dileptons with large momenta and of photons originating from the QGP around $T_c$ are suppressed by the χSB effect. We also discuss to what extent information about details of the chiral transition, such as its characteristic temperature range and the steepness of the crossover, are reflected in these quantities.
Models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking usually include new spin-1 resonances, whose couplings and masses have to satisfy electroweak precision tests. We propose to use dilepton searches to probe the underlying structure responsible for satisfying these. Using the invariant mass spectrum and charge asymmetry, we can determine the number, parity, and isospin of these resonances. We pick three models of strong/warped symmetry breaking, and show that each model produces specific features that reflect this underlying structure of electroweak symmetry breaking and cancellations.
In the littlest Higgs Model with T-parity, we discuss the pair production of the T-odd top partner ($T_{-}$) which decays almost 100\% into the top quark and the lightest T-odd particle ($A_{H}$). Considering the current constraints, we investigate the observability of the T-odd top partner pair production through the process $pp\rightarrow T_{-}\bar{T}_{-}\rightarrow t\bar{t}A_{H}A_{H}$ in final states with two leptons at 14 TeV LHC. We analyze the signal significance and find that the lower limit on the T-odd top partner mass are about 1.04 TeV, 1.14 TeV, 1.23 TeV at $2σ$ confidence level at…
We revisit the issue of probing R-violating couplings of supersymmetric theories at hadronic colliders, particularly at the LHC. Concentrating on dimuon production, an evaluation of the optimal sensitivity to the R-violating coupling is performed through a maximum likelihood analysis. The measurement uncertainties are evaluated through a study of fully generated events processed through a fast simulation of the ATLAS detector. It is found that a host of R-violating couplings can be measured to a statistical accuracy of better than 10%, over a significant part of the m_{tilde f} -- lambda param…
In the presence of the T-parity violating Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) anomaly term, the otherwise stable heavy photon A_H in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT) decays to either Standard Model (SM) gauge boson pairs, or to SM fermions via loop diagrams. We make a detailed study of the collider signatures where the A_H can be reconstructed from invariant mass peaks in the opposite sign same flavor dilepton or the four-lepton channels. This enables us to obtain information about the fundamental symmetry breaking scale f in the LHT and thereby the low-lying mass spectrum of the theory. In a…
We study the compatibility of spontaneous breaking of parity and successful cosmology in a left-right symmetric model where supersymmetry breaking is achieved in metastable vacua. We show that domain walls formed due to this breaking can be removed due to Planck scale suppressed terms, provided the parity breaking scale $M_R$ is constrained to remain smaller than $10^{10}-10^{11}$ GeV. Ensuring metastability is achieved naturally even if the entire mechanism operates at low scales, within a few orders of magnitude of the TeV scale. Taking $M_R$ as high as permitted, close to the acceptable reh…
Recent data on dilepton production in heavy ion collisions revealed an abnormal excess in the region of invariant masses below 1 GeV. Our proposal is the creation of a slowly varying time-dependent pseudoscalar condensate within the hot nuclear fireball that comes from the very collision. The local parity breaking effect that immediately arises substantially modifies the vector meson properties leading to an excess of lepton pairs that could be a part of the explanation for the observed abnormal dilepton yield.
We estimate the sensitivity of the 14 TeV LHC run to an R-parity violating supersymmetric model, via the same-sign dilepton (SSDL) signature. We consider the simplified model with light gluinos and stops, motivated by naturalness. We find that gluinos up to 1.4 TeV can be discovered with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb-1. If a high-luminosity option is implemented and a 3000 fb-1 dataset becomes available, the gluino mass reach can be increased to 1.6-1.75 TeV.
Formation of transitory domain walls is quite generic in theories with spontaneous breaking of discrete symmetries. Since these walls are in conflict with cosmology, there has to be some mechanism which makes them disappear. We study one such mechanism by incorporating Planck scale suppressed operators within the framework of Left-Right Symmetric Models (LRSM) where Left-Right parity (D parity) is spontaneously broken. We find that this mechanism can not make the walls disappear in minimal versions of LRSM. We propose two viable extensions of this model and show that Planck scale suppressed op…
We examine the parity violating terms generated by the box diagram in QED_3 at finite temperature. These lead to both extensive as well as non-extensive effective actions, which have very distinct behavior in the long wavelength and static limits. We discuss a large gauge Ward identity for the leading terms in the static limit, whose solution coincides with the effective action proposed earlier.
We examine the leptonic forward-backward and polarization (left-right) asymmetries in the dileptonic B -> X_s l^+ l^- decay when the momentum dependence of $ψ$ and $ψ'-γ$ conversion strength is taken into account. The results indicate only a small shift in the asymmetry distributions.
We present a new way to break parity symmetry in left-right symmetric models using boundary conditions on the fields residing in the fifth dimension. We also discuss the connection between the limits on the size of extra dimensions and the scale of right handed symmetry breaking obtained from the analysis of neutrinoless double beta decay in the case where the righthanded gauge symmetry is in the bulk.
Parity and CP symmetries are broken in the world around us. Nonetheless, parity (or CP) may be a gauge symmetry which is higgsed in our universe. This is assumed in many scenarios for physics beyond the Standard Model, including the classic Nelson--Barr proposal for the Strong CP problem. Gauged parity can only arise in quantum gravity, where it corresponds to a path integral over both orientable and non-orientable spacetime manifolds. We show that spontaneous breaking of gauged parity leads to exactly stable domain walls, and describe the implications for the cosmology of models with gauged p…
We suggest simple models of spontaneous parity violation in supersymmetric strong gauge theory. We focus on left-right symmetric model and investigate vacuum with spontaneous parity violation. Non-perturbative effects are calculable in supersymmetric gauge theory, and we suggest two new models. The first model shows confinement, and the second model has a dual description of the theory. The left-right symmetry breaking and electroweak symmetry breaking are simultaneously occurred with the suitable energy scale hierarchy. The second model also induces spontaneous supersymmetry breaking.
Unified models incorporating the right handed neutrino in a symmetric way generically possess parity symmetry. If this is broken spontaneously it results in the formation of domain walls in the early Universe, whose persistence is unwanted. A generic mechanism for destabilisation of such walls is a small pressure difference signalled by difference in the free energy across the walls. It is interesting to explore the possibility of such effects in conjunction with the effects that break supersymmetry in a phenomenologically acceptable way. Realising this possibility in the context of several sc…
We study hadronic polarization and the related anisotropy of the dilepton angular distribution for the reaction $πN \to Ne^+e^-$. We employ consistent effective interactions for baryon resonances up to spin-5/2 to compute their contribution to the anisotropy coefficient. We show that the spin and parity of the intermediate baryon resonance is reflected in the angular dependence of the anisotropy coefficient. We present results for the anisotropy coefficient including the $N(1520)$ and $N(1440)$ resonances, which are essential at the collision energy of the recent data obtained by the HADES col…
We investigate the ability of LEP2 to detect possible $R$-parity violation, especially for the case where direct production cross-sections are too small for all superparticles. We demonstrate that for coupling strengths allowed by present experiments, sfermion-exchange diagrams can contribute significantly to the $e^+ e^- \rightarrow f \bar{f} $ process. This would be a useful tool in further constraining the parameter space. Similar arguments hold for leptoquarks and dileptons as well.
We analyze the dilepton emission rates from the hot pion gas confined to a finite space-time volume. Two models of pion(+) pion(-) annihilation to dileptons are under consideration. The first model mimics an extreme influence of the dense hadron environment on the rho-meson mean free path and mean life time. The second model deals with the standard concept of vector meson dominance when the hadron medium is not accounted. Our results indicate that the dilepton rates are finite in the low invariant mass region M<2m_π. It is found that the rates experience an enhancement in the electron-positron…
We review various features of the $R$-parity breaking phenomenology, with particular attention to the low energy observables, and to the patterns of the $R$-parity breaking interactions that arise in Grand Unified models.
We present the two-loop $β$-functions for non-standard soft supersymmetry-breaking couplings including non-standard R-parity violating soft terms in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model
At the LHC, dileptonic events may turn up new physics interacting with quarks and leptons. The poster child for this scenario is a resonant $Z'$, much anticipated in $\ell^+ \ell^-$ invariant mass spectra. However, angular spectra of dileptons may play an equal or stronger role in discovering a non-resonant species. This paper avails of their LHC measurements to corner the couplings and masses of leptoquarks (LQs), that can mediate $q \bar{q} \rightarrow \ell^+ \ell^-$ in the $t$-channel and dramatically alter Standard Model angular spectra. Also derived are constraints from alterations to $m_…
We have studied the predictions for the LSP decay within the framework of a radiatively broken unified supergravity model without R-parity. Assuming that Higgs/slepton mixing is the only source of R-parity breaking and responsible for the observed neutrino oscillations we obtain predictons for the LSP life-time and branching fractions.
In the framework of a (2+1)-dimensional P-even massive Gross-Neveu model, an external magnetic field is shown to induce a parity breaking first order phase transition. Possibility of applying the results obtained to description of magnetic phase transitions in high-temperature superconductors is discussed.
We show how R-parity can break spontaneously as a result of radiative corrections in unified N=1 supergravity models. We illustrate this with a concrete rank-four unified model, where the spontaneous breaking of R-parity is accompanied by the existence of a physical majoron. We determine the resulting supersymmetric particle mass spectrum and show that R-parity-breaking signals may be detectable at LEP200.
I consider parity violation of the chiral symmetry broken vacuum. It is shown that the parity of the true vacuum in the chiral symmetry breaking model is violated. I propose new mechanism of massive neutrino, which the neutrinos have mass in terms of the chiral symmetry breaking. In this mechanism, it may give us new understanding why almost neutrinos have left chirality. Further, NJL model is proposed as alternative phenomenological model of neutrinos.
Hadronic polarization and the related anisotropy of the dilepton angular distribution are studied for the reaction $πN \rightarrow Ne^+ e^-$. We employ consistent effective interactions for baryon resonances up to spin-5/2, where non-physical degrees of freedom are eliminated, to compute the anisotropy coefficients for isolated intermediate baryon resonances. It is shown that the spin and parity of the intermediate baryon resonance is reflected in the angular dependence of the anisotropy coefficient. We then compute the anisotropy coefficient including the $N(1520)$ and $N(1440)$ resonances, w…
New Physics scenarios generally predict the existence of very heavy quantum states that can possibly manifest themselves as peaks in the cross sections at the LHC. For values of the parameters in certain domains, different nonstandard models can generate peaks with the same mass and same number of events. In this case, the spin determination of a peak, requiring the angular analysis of the events, becomes crucial in order to identify the relevant nonstandard source. We here discuss, using a particularly suitable symmetrically integrated angular asymmetry applied to Drell-Yan dilepton and dipho…
We study the pattern of gluino cascade decays in a class of supersymmetric models where R-parity is spontaneously broken. We give a detailed discussion of the R-parity violating decays of the lightest neutralino, the second lightest neutralino and the lightest chargino. The multi-lepton and same-sign dilepton signal rates expected in these models are compared with those predicted in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We show that these rates can be substantially enhanced in broken R-parity models.
If supersymmetry is realized with spontaneous breaking of R-parity, there will be important consequences in several different areas which can be tested through different types of experiments. In this talk we review the phenomenological implications of these theories, with special emphasis on new signals at the present and future accelerators.
We show that in the case of small R-parity and lepton number breaking couplings, primordial nucleosynthesis, thermal leptogenesis and gravitino dark matter are naturally consistent for gravitino masses m_{3/2} \gsim 5 GeV. We present a model where R-parity breaking is tied to B-L breaking, which predicts the needed small couplings. The metastable next-to-lightest superparticle has a decay length that is typically larger than a few centimeters, with characteristic signatures at the LHC. The photon flux produced by relic gravitino decays may be part of the apparent excess in the extragalactic di…
The current theoretical status in the analysis and interpretation of low-mass dilepton measurements in (ultra-) relativistic heavy-ion experiments is reviewed. Special emphasis is put on potential signals of (partial) restoration of dynamically broken chiral symmetry in a hot and dense hadronic medium. It follows from chiral symmetry alone that parity partners of hadronic correlation functions must become identical when the symmetry is restored. The assessment of medium effects in the vector channel, which governs the dilepton production, thus necessitates a simultaneous treatment of the vecto…
We show that a model where both CP and R-parity are spontaneously broken exists. We study the electroweak symmetry breaking sector of the model and find minima consistent with experimentally viable Higgs boson masses. We also demonstrate that one can obtain neutrino masses and mixing angles within measured values.
We reanalyze the contributions to neutrinoless double beta ($\znbb$) decay from supersymmetry with explicit breaking of R-parity. Although we keep both bilinear and trilinear terms, our emphasis is put on bilinear R-parity breaking terms, because these mimic more closely the models where the breaking of R-parity is spontaneous. Comparing the relevant Feynman diagrams we conclude that the usual mass mechanism of double beta decay is the dominant one. From the non-observation of $\znbb$ decay we set limits on the bilinear R-parity breaking parameters of typically a (few) 100 $keV$. Despite such …
Yukawa-like R-parity violating (RPV) couplings are generated as effective operators with a typical strength of ${\cal O}(10^{-3})$ through loops involving the scalars, the gauginos and the soft supersymmetry breaking RPV interactions. Neutrino masses and other phenomenological implications of such a scenario are discussed.
We show that the minimal R-parity breaking model characterized by an effective bilinear violation of R-parity in the superpotential is consistent with minimal N=1 supergravity unification with radiative breaking of the electroweak symmetry and universal scalar and gaugino masses. This one-parameter extension of the MSSM-SUGRA model provides therefore the simplest reference model for the breaking of R-parity and constitutes a consistent truncation of the complete dynamical models with spontaneous R-parity breaking proposed previously. We comment on the lowest-lying CP-even Higgs boson mass and …
I report here on the systematic analysis at Tevatron of the R-parity violating SUSY signals which correspond to the possible solution of anomalous HERA events.
We revisit the proof provided by Vafa and Witten that there is no spontaneous parity breaking in theories with vector-like fermions. We argue that the various criticisms that have been leveled at the original proof do not invalidate it.
We consider the proton decay involving a light gravitino or axino in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking models to derive constraints on the $R$ parity and baryon number violating Yukawa couplings. Bounds on all nine coupling constants are obtained by considering the decay amplitudes at one-loop order.
We present a simplest inflationary scenario in the minimal left-right symmetric model with spontaneous D-parity breaking, which is a well motivated particle physics model for neutrino masses. This leads us to connect the observed anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background to the sub-eV neutrino masses. The baryon asymmetry via the leptogenesis route is also discussed briefly.
We study the possibility of soft breaking effects of the generalized parity within the minimal Left-Right model. One aim of the paper is to elaborate on the potentiality, the limit, and the predictivity of a restored parity at high scale. While revisiting the issue of strong CP in the Left-Right theories, we motivate the possibility of explicit-parity-breaking, that we then parameterize in the right-handed quark mixing matrix. The strong CP parameter $\barθ$ is also parameterized in terms of the breaking. We discuss some possible phenomenological consequences in this scenario. In particular, t…
We discuss possible manifestations of R parity breaking in the Higgs sector. We illustrate this with three examples: high-energy mono-photon production at LEP, calculation of limits on associated production of invisibly decaying Higgs bosons and discussion of non-standard scalar decays in the MSSM with broken R parity.
Fermion models with selfinteraction including derivatives of fields are investigated in the strong coupling regime. The existence of three phases is established in the two channel model near tricritical point. The special phase of dynamical P-parity breaking is found.
The presence of R-parity violating interactions may relieve the tension between existing LHC constraints and natural supersymmetry. In this paper we lay down the theoretical framework and explore models of dynamical R-parity violation in which the breaking of R-parity is communicated to the visible sector by heavy messenger fields. We find that R-parity violation is often dominated by non-holomorphic operators that have so far been largely ignored, and might require a modification of the existing searches at the LHC. The dynamical origin implies that the effects of such operators are suppresse…
We consider the charged scalar boson phenomenology in the bilinear R-parity breaking model which induces a mixing between staus and the charged Higgs boson. The charged Higgs boson mass can be lower than expected in the MSSM, even before including radiative corrections. The R-parity violating decay rates can be comparable or even bigger than the R-parity conserving ones. These features could have implications for charged supersymmetric scalar boson searches at future accelerators.
The explanation of a 200 GeV R-parity violating squark to the HERA high-$Q^2$ anomaly would have an important impact on supersymmetry-breaking models. Here we show that a squark of mass around 200 GeV is disallowed in the minimal gauge-mediated SUSY-breaking models in the parameter space constrained by the radiative electroweak-symmetry breaking and the experimental lower limits on supersymmetric particles, even after including the large R-parity violating couplings. Supergravity motivated models can, on the other hand, give rise to these scalar quarks in a wide range of parameter space.
We present the study of the possibility to have R-parity breaking interactions in minimal SU(5). An interesting scenario emerges in which the R-parity breaking coupling $λ'_{333}$ is large, and its size is related to the value of the tau neutrino mass, assuming that supersymmetry is broken according to low energy supergravity framework. This scenario may also have implications on the issue of $b-τ$ unification.
An unstable gravitino with lifetime longer than $10^{26}$ sec or so has been proposed as a possible dark matter candidate in supergravity models with R-parity breaking. We find a natural realization of this idea in the minimal supersymmetric left-right models where left-right symmetry breaking scale in the few TeV range. It is known that in these models, R-parity must break in order to have parity breaking as required by low energy weak interactions. The sub-eV neutrino masses imply that R-parity breaking effects in this model must be highly suppressed. This in turn makes the gravitino LSP lon…
Four different supersymmetric models based on SU(2)_L X U(1)_R X U(1)_B-L and SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_B-L gauge symmetry groups are studied. U(1)_B-L symmetry is broken spontaneously by a vacuum expectation value (VEV) of a sneutrino field. The right-handed gauge bosons may obtain their mass solely by sneutrino VEV. The physical charged lepton and neutrino are mixtures of gauginos, higgsinos and lepton interaction eigenstates. Explicit formulae for masses and mixings in the physical lepton fields are found. The spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism fixes the trilinear R-parity breaking coup…
Domain wall formation is quite generic in spontaneous Left-Right parity (D-parity) breaking models. Since they are in conflict with cosmology, we need some mechanisms to remove them. Planck scale suppressed effects have been considered to be quite successful for this purpose. We study this possibility in Minimal Supersymmetric Left-Right (SUSYLR) model originally proposed by Kuchimanchi et al \cite{Kuchimanchi:1993jg} where both D-parity and R-parity $(R_p = (-1)^{3(B-L)+2s})$ are spontaneously broken. We find that Planck scale suppressed terms allowed for the specific particle content of this…
We study the production of neutralinos and charginos at LEP and at a linear collider in the case of spontaneously broken R-parity. We first investigate the constraints on the single neutralino and chargino production from the LEP 1 experiments, and then we consider the production at LEP 2 and at a linear collider. We concentrate on the supersymmetric $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$ model, where the spontaneous R-parity breaking is inevitable and is associated with the breaking of the LR-symmetry.
The R-parity non-conservation phenomenology within the minimal supersymmetric standard model with gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking has been studied. New constraints on the lepton number violating constant $λ_{111}^\prime$ were imposed by non-observability of the neutrinoless double beta decay. We find that $λ_{111}^\prime$ depends strongly on the effective supersymmetry breaking scale $Λ$ only and deduce limits which are much stronger than those previously found in literature.
