In the case of neutral populations of fixed sizes in equilibrium whose genealogies are described by the Kingman $N$-coalescent back from time $t$ consider the associated processes of total tree length as $t$ increases. We show that the (càdlàg) process to which the sequence of compensated tree length processes converges as $N$ tends to infinity is a process of infinite quadratic variation; therefore this process cannot be a semimartingale. This answers a question posed in Pfaffelhuber et al. (2011).
Kingman Coalescent was first proposed by Kingman [7] in population genetics to describe population's genealogical structure. Now it becomes a bench-mark model for coalescent process. Extensive studies have been conducted on Kingman coalescent. In particular, its explicit finite time distribution was obtained by Tavaré [12]. However, very few people use this explicit distribution to do analysis for it is an intractable infinite series. In this article, we are going to establish a complex integral representation for the finite time distribution, then we use steepest descent method to analyze thi…
The aim of the paper is to introduce a two-parameter family of infinite-dimensional diffusion processes X(alpha, theta) related to Pitman's two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet distributions PD(alpha, theta). The diffusions X(alpha, theta) are obtained in a scaling limit transition from certain finite Markov chains on partitions of natural numbers. The state space of X(alpha, theta) is an infinite-dimensional simplex called the Kingman simplex. In the special case when parameter alpha vanishes, our finite Markov chains are similar to Moran-type model in population genetics, and our diffusion processes …
For a one-locus haploid infinite population with discrete generations, the celebrated Kingman's model describes the evolution of fitness distributions under the competition of selection and mutation, with a constant mutation probability. Letting mutation probabilities vary on generations reflects the influence of a random environment. This paper generalises Kingman's model by using a sequence of i.i.d. random mutation probabilities. For any distribution of the sequence, the weak convergence of fitness distributions to the globally stable equilibrium for any initial fitness distribution is prov…
Kingman's model describes the evolution of a one-locus haploid population of infinite size and discrete generations under the competition of selection and mutation. A random generalisation has been made in a previous paper which assumes all mutation probabilities to be i.i.d.. The weak convergence of fitness distributions to a globally stable equilibrium for any initial distribution was proved. A condensation occurs if almost surely a positive proportion of the population travels to and condensates on the largest fitness value due to the dominance of selection over mutation. A criterion of con…
In this paper we obtain scaling limits of $Λ$-coalescents near time zero under a regularly varying assumption. In particular this covers the case of Kingman's coalescent and beta coalescents. The limiting processes are coalescents with infinite mass, obtained geometrically as tangent cones of Evans metric space associated with the coalescent. In the case of Kingman's coalescent we are able to obtain a simple construction of the limiting space using a two-sided Brownian motion.
An important property of Kingman's coalescent is that, starting from a state with an infinite number of blocks, over any positive time horizon, it transitions into an almost surely finite number of blocks. This is known as `coming down from infinity'. Moreover, of the many different (exchangeable) stochastic coalescent models, Kingman's coalescent is the `fastest' to come down from infinity. In this article we study what happens when we counteract this `fastest' coalescent with the action of an extreme form of fragmentation. We augment Kingman's coalescent, where any two blocks merge at rate $…
A well-established model for the genealogy of a large population in equilibrium is Kingman's coalescent. For the population together with its genealogy evolving in time, this gives rise to a time-stationary tree-valued process. We study the sum of the branch lengths, briefly denoted as tree length, and prove that the (suitably compensated) sequence of tree length processes converges, as the population size tends to infinity, to a limit process with cadlag paths, infinite infinitesimal variance, and a Gumbel distribution as its equilibrium.
The Poisson-Kingman distributions, $\mathrm{PK}(ρ)$, on the infinite simplex, can be constructed from a Poisson point process having intensity density $ρ$ or by taking the ranked jumps up till a specified time of a subordinator with Lévy density $ρ$, as proportions of the subordinator. As a natural extension, we replace the Poisson point process with a negative binomial point process having parameter $r>0$ and Lévy density $ρ$, thereby defining a new class $\mathrm{PK}^{(r)}(ρ)$ of distributions on the infinite simplex. The new class contains the two-parameter generalisation $\mathrm{PD}(α, θ)…
In this paper, we study a Backward Stochastic Differential Equation with Jumps (BSDEJs in short) where the jumps have infinite activity. Following a forward approach based on Exponential Quadratic semimartingale, we prove the existence of solution of Quadratic BSDEJs with unbounded terminal condition and quadratic growth in z.
We consider Hamilton Jacobi Bellman equations in an inifinite dimensional Hilbert space, with quadratic (respectively superquadratic) hamiltonian and with continuous (respectively lipschitz continuous) final conditions. This allows to study stochastic optimal control problems for suitable controlled Ornstein Uhlenbeck process with unbounded control processes.
The paper studies a class of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes on the classical Wiener space. These processes are associated with a diffusion type Dirichlet form whose corresponding diffusion operator is unbounded in the Cameron-Martin space. It is shown that the distributions of certain finite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes converge weakly to the distribution of such an infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. For the infinite dimensional processes, the ordinary scalar quadratic variation is calculated. Moreover, relative to the stochastic calculus via regularization, the scalar …
In this paper we study one dimensional backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) with random terminal time not necessarily bounded or finite when the generator F(t,Y,Z) has a quadratic growth in Z. We provide existence and uniqueness of a bounded solution of such BSDEs and, in the case of infinite horizon, regular dependence on parameters. The obtained results are then applied to prove existence and uniqueness of a mild solution to elliptic partial differential equations in Hilbert spaces.
The two parameter Poisson-Dirichlet distribution $PD(α,θ)$ is the distribution of an infinite dimensional random discrete probability. It is a generalization of Kingman's Poisson-Dirichlet distribution. The two parameter Dirichlet process $Π_{α,θ,ν_0}$ is the law of a pure atomic random measure with masses following the two parameter Poisson-Dirichlet distribution. In this article we focus on the construction and the properties of the infinite dimensional symmetric diffusion processes with respective symmetric measures $PD(α,θ)$ and $Π_{α,θ,ν_0}$. The methods used come from the theory of Diric…
We consider the tree-valued Fleming-Viot process, $(\mathcal X_t)_{t\geq 0}$, with mutation and selection as studied in Depperschmidt, Greven, Pfaffelhuber (2012). This process models the stochastic evolution of the genealogies and (allelic) types under resampling, mutation and selection in the population currently alive in the limit of infinitely large populations. Genealogies and types are described by (isometry classes of) marked metric measure spaces. The long-time limit of the neutral tree-valued Fleming-Viot dynamics is an equilibrium given via the marked metric measure space associated …
We study quadratic optimal stochastic control problems with control dependent noise state equation perturbed by an affine term and with stochastic coefficients. Both infinite horizon case and ergodic case are treated. To this purpose we introduce a Backward Stochastic Riccati Equation and a dual backward stochastic equation, both considered in the whole time line. Besides some stabilizability conditions we prove existence of a solution for the two previous equations defined as limit of suitable finite horizon approximating problems. This allows to perform the synthesis of the optimal control.
The goal of this paper is to study the lookdown model with selection in the case of a population containing two types of individuals, with a reproduction model which is dual to the $Λ$-coalescent. In particular we formulate the infinite population "$Λ$-lookdown model with selection". When the measure $Λ$ gives no mass to 0, we show that the proportion of one of the two types converges, as the population size $N$ tends to infinity, towards the solution of a stochastic differential equation driven by a Poisson point process. We show that one of the two types fixates in finite time if and only if…
This paper investigates multidimensional extended type-I BSVIEs and infinite families of BSDEs in the case of quadratic generators. We establish existence and uniqueness results in the case of fully quadratic as well as Lipschitz-quadratic quadratic generators. We also present and discuss a type of flow property satisfied by this family of BSVIEs. As a preliminary step, we establish the well-posedness of a class of infinite families of BSDEs, as introduced in Hernåndez and Possamaï [20], which are of interest in their own right. Our approach relies on the strategy developed by Tevsadze [49] fo…
We are interested in the Logarithmic Sobolev Inequality for the infinite volume Gibbs measure with no quadratic interactions. We consider unbounded spin systems on the one dimensional Lattice with interactions that go beyond the usual strict convexity and without uniform bound on the second derivative. We assume that the one dimensional single-site measure with boundaries satisfies the Log-Sobolev inequality uniformly on the boundary conditions and we determine conditions under which the Log-Sobolev Inequality can be extended to the infinite volume Gibbs measure.
In this paper, we investigate infinite horizon jump-diffusion forward-backward stochastic differential equations under some monotonicity conditions. We establish an existence and uniqueness theorem, two stability results and a comparison theorem for solutions to such kind of equations. Then the theoretical results are applied to study a kind of infinite horizon backward stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problems, and then differential game problems. The unique optimal controls for the control problems and the unique Nash equilibrium points for the game problems are obtained in closed…
It is a longstanding unsolved problem to characterize the optimal feedbacks for general SLQs (i.e., stochastic linear quadratic control problems) with random coefficients in infinite dimensions; while the same problem but in finite dimensions was just addressed in a recent work [36]. This paper is devoted to giving a solution to this problem under some assumptions which can be verified for several interesting concrete models. More precisely, under these assumptions, we establish the equivalence between the existence of optimal feedback operator for infinite dimensional SLQs and the solvability…
We construct a family of Markov processes with continuous sample trajectories on an infinite-dimensional space, the Thoma simplex. The family depends on three continuous parameters, one of which, the Jack parameter, is similar to the beta parameter in random matrix theory. The processes arise in a scaling limit transition from certain finite Markov chains, the so called up-down chains on the Young graph with the Jack edge multiplicities. Each of the limit Markov processes is ergodic and its stationary distribution is a symmetrizing measure. The infinitesimal generators of the processes are exp…
We propose a simple and original approach for solving linear-quadratic mean-field stochastic control problems. We study both finite-horizon and infinite-horizon problems, and allow notably some coefficients to be stochastic. Our method is based on a suitable extension of the martingale formulation for verification theorems in control theory. The optimal control involves the solution to a system of Riccati ordinary differential equations and to a linear mean-field backward stochastic differential equation, existence and uniqueness conditions are provided for such a system. Finally, we illustrat…
The representation of the solution of some Backward Stochastic Differential Equation as an infinite series is obtained. Some exactly solvable examples are considered.
We study the infinitesimal generators of evolutions of linear mappings on the space of polynomials, which correspond to a special class of Markov processes with polynomial regressions called quadratic harnesses. We relate the infinitesimal generator to the unique solution of a certain commutation equation, and we use the commutation equation to find an explicit formula for the infinitesimal generator of free quadratic harnesses.
