We develop a percolation model motivated by recent experimental studies of gels with active network remodeling by molecular motors. This remodeling was found to lead to a critical state reminiscent of random percolation (RP), but with a cluster distribution inconsistent with RP. Our model not only can account for these experiments, but also exhibits an unusual type of mixed phase transition: We find that the transition is characterized by signatures of criticality, but with a discontinuity in the order parameter.
In their recent work Sheinman et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 098104 (2015)] introduce a variation of percolation which they call no-enclaves percolation (NEP). The main claims are 1) the salient physics captured in NEP is closer to what happens experimentally; 2) The Fisher exponent of NEP, is $τ=1.82(1)$; 3) Due to the different Fisher exponent, NEP constitutes a universality class distinct from random percolation (RP). While we fully agree with 1) and found NEP to be a very interesting variation of random percolation, we disagree with 2) and 3). We will demonstrate that $τ$ is exactly $2$, di…
The elastic response in polymeric gels is studied by means of a percolation dynamic model. By numerical simulations the fluctuations in the gyration radius and in the center of mass motion of the percolating cluster are determined. Their scaling behaviour at the gelation threshold gives a critical exponent for the elastic modulus $f \sim 2.5 \pm 0.1$ in agreement with the prediction $f = d ν$.
We numerically study the jamming transition in particulate systems with attraction by investigating their mechanical response at zero temperature. We find three regimes of mechanical behavior separated by two critical transitions--connectivity and rigidity percolation. The transitions belong to different universality classes than their lattice counterparts, due to force balance constraints. We also find that these transitions are unchanged at low temperatures and resemble gelation transitions in experiments on colloidal and silica gels.
Following recent X-ray diffraction experiments by Wong, Li, and Safinya on biopolymer gels, we apply Onsager excluded volume theory to a nematic mixture of rigid rods and strong ``$π/2$'' cross-linkers obtaining a long-ranged, highly anisotropic depletion attraction between the linkers. This attraction leads to breakdown of the percolation theory for this class of gels, to breakdown of Onsager's second-order virial method, and to formation of heterogeneities in the form of raft-like ribbons.
The dynamical arrest of gels is the consequence of a well defined structural phase transition, leading to the formation of a spanning cluster of bonded particles. The dynamical glass transition, instead, is not accompanied by any clear structural signature. Nevertheless, both transitions are characterized by the emergence of dynamical heterogeneities. Reviewing recent results from numerical simulations, we discuss the behavior of dynamical heterogeneities in different systems and show that a clear connection with the structure exists in the case of gels. The emerging picture may be also releva…
We study the evolution of percolation with freezing. Specifically, we consider cluster formation via two competing processes: irreversible aggregation and freezing. We find that when the freezing rate exceeds a certain threshold, the percolation transition is suppressed. Below this threshold, the system undergoes a series of percolation transitions with multiple giant clusters ("gels") formed. Giant clusters are not self-averaging as their total number and their sizes fluctuate from realization to realization. The size distribution F_k, of frozen clusters of size k, has a universal tail, F_k ~…
We introduce a three-dimensional model for jamming and glasses, and prove that the fraction of frozen particles is discontinuous at the directed-percolation critical density. In agreement with the accepted scenario for jamming- and glass-transitions, this is a mixed-order transition; the discontinuity is accompanied by diverging length- and time-scales. Because one-dimensional directed-percolation paths comprise the backbone of frozen particles, the unfrozen rattlers may use the third dimension to travel between their cages. Thus the dynamics are diffusive on long-times even above the critical…
Simulating percolation and critical phenomena of labelled species inside films composed of single-component linear homogeneous macromolecules using molecular Monte Carlo method in 3 dimensions, we study dependence of these conducting transition and critical phenomena upon both thermal movement, i.e. spontaneous mobility, and extra-molecular topological constraints of the molecules. Systems containing topological constraints and/or composed of immobile particles, e.g. lattice models and chemical gelation, were studied in conventional works on percolation. Coordinates of the randomly distributed…
In the presence of attraction, the jamming transition of packings of frictionless particles corresponds to the rigidity percolation. When the range of attraction is long, the distribution of the size of rigid clusters, $P(s)$, is continuous and shows a power-law decay. For systems with short-range attractions, however, $P(s)$ appears discontinuous. There is a power-law decay for small cluster sizes, followed by a low probability gap and a peak near the system size. We find that this appearing ``discontinuity'' does not mean that the transition is discontinuous. In fact, it signifies the coexis…
We study the bootstrap and diffusion percolation models in the simple-cubic (sc), body-centered cubic (bcc), and face-centered cubic (fcc) lattices using the Newman-Ziff algorithm. The percolation threshold and critical exponents were calculated through finite-size scaling with high precision in the three lattices. In addition to the continuous and first-order percolation transitions, we found a double transition, which is a continuous transition followed by a discontinuity of the order parameter. We show that the continuous transitions of the bootstrap and diffusion percolation models have th…

The $k$-core percolation is a fundamental structural transition in complex networks. Through the analysis of the size jump behaviors of $k$-core in the evolution process of networks, we confirm that $k$-core percolation is continuous phase transition when $k=1,2$ while it is a hybrid first-order-second-order phase transition when $k\ge 3$. $2$-core percolation belongs to different universality class from that of $1$-core (giant component) percolation. The discontinuity of $k$-core percolation with $k\ge 3$ can be concluded from largest size jump of $k$-core which will not disappear in the ther…
The explosive percolation problem on the complete graph is investigated via extensive numerical simulations. We obtain the cluster-size distribution at the moment when the cluster size heterogeneity becomes maximum. The distribution is found to be well described by the power-law form with the decay exponent $τ= 2.06(2)$, followed by a hump. We then use the finite-size scaling method to make all the distributions at various system sizes up to $N=2^{37}$ collapse perfectly onto a scaling curve characterized solely by the single exponent $τ$. We also observe that the instant of that collapse conv…
This Letter studies the critical point as well as the discontinuity of a class of explosive site percolation in Erdös and Rényi (ER) random network. The class of the percolation is implemented by introducing a best-of-m rule. Two major results are found: i). For any specific $m$, the critical percolation point scales with the average degree of the network while its exponent associated with $m$ is bounded by -1 and $\sim-0.5$. ii). Discontinuous percolation could occur on sparse networks if and only if $m$ approaches infinite. These results not only generalize some conclusions of ordinary perco…
Percolation is a paradigmatic model in disordered systems and has been applied to various natural phenomena. The percolation transition is known as one of the most robust continuous transitions. However, recent extensive studies have revealed that a few models exhibit a discontinuous percolation transition (DPT) in cluster merging processes. Unlike the case of continuous transitions, understanding the nature of discontinuous phase transitions requires a detailed study of the system at hand, which has not been undertaken yet for DPTs. Here we examine the cluster size distribution immediately be…
The location and nature of the percolation transition in random networks is a subject of intense interest. Recently, a series of graph evolution processes have been introduced that lead to discontinuous percolation transitions where the addition of a single edge causes the size of the largest component to exhibit a significant macroscopic jump in the thermodynamic limit. These processes can have additional exotic behaviors, such as displaying a `Devil's staircase' of discrete jumps in the supercritical regime. Here we investigate whether the location of the largest jump coincides with the perc…
Hybrid percolation transitions (HPTs) induced by cascading processes have been observed in diverse complex systems such as $k$-core percolation, breakdown on interdependent networks and cooperative epidemic spreading models. Much effort has been devoted to describe the properties of HPTs of individual systems. Yet the fundamental question about the possible universal mechanism underlying those HPTs has not been investigated at a microscopic level. Here, we find that the discontinuity in the order parameter in such HPTs results from two steps: a durable critical branching (CB) and an explosive,…
We expand the Potts-percolation model of a solid to include stress and strain. Neighboring atoms are connected by bonds. We set the energy of a bond to be given by the Lennard-Jones potential. If the energy is larger than a threshold the bond is more likely to fail, while if the energy is lower than the threshold the bond is more likely to be alive. In two dimensions we compute the equation of state: stress as function of inter-atomic distance and temperature by using renormalization group and Monte Carlo simulations. The phase diagram, the equation of state, the isothermal modulus and the the…

Network geometry has strong effects on network dynamics. In particular, the underlying hyperbolic geometry of discrete manifolds has recently been shown to affect their critical percolation properties. Here we investigate the properties of link percolation in non-amenable two-dimensional branching simplicial and cell complexes, i.e., simplicial and cell complexes in which the boundary scales like the volume. We establish the relation between the equations determining the percolation probability in random branching cell complexes and the equation for interdependent percolation in multiplex netw…
Percolation is one of the most studied processes in statistical physics. A recent paper by Achlioptas et al. [Science 323, 1453 (2009)] has shown that the percolation transition, which is usually continuous, becomes discontinuous ("explosive") if links are added to the system according to special cooperative rules (Achlioptas processes). In this paper we present a detailed numerical analysis of Achlioptas processes with product rule on various systems, including lattices, random networks a' la Erdoes-Renyi and scale-free networks. In all cases we recover the explosive transition by Achlioptas …
We present an exact solution of percolation in a generalized class of Watts-Strogatz graphs defined on a 1-dimensional underlying lattice. We find a non-classical critical point in the limit of the number of long-range bonds in the system going to zero, with a discontinuity in the percolation probability and a divergence in the mean finite-cluster size. We show that the critical behavior falls into one of three regimes depending on the proportion of occupied long-range to unoccupied nearest-neighbor bonds, with each regime being characterized by different critical exponents. The three regimes …
Jamming, or dynamical arrest, is a transition at which many particles stop moving in a collective manner. In nature it is brought about by, for example, increasing the packing density, changing the interactions between particles, or otherwise restricting the local motion of the elements of the system. The onset of collectivity occurs because, when one particle is blocked, it may lead to the blocking of a neighbor. That particle may then block one of its neighbors, these effects propagating across some typical domain of size named the dynamical correlation length. When this length diverges, the…
We describe the critical behavior of weak multiplex percolation, a generalization of percolation to multiplex or interdependent networks. A node can determine its active or inactive status simply by referencing neighboring nodes. This is not the case for the more commonly studied generalization of percolation to multiplex networks, the mutually connected clusters, which requires an interconnecting path within each layer between any two vertices in the giant mutually connected component. We study the emergence of a giant connected component of active nodes under the weak percolation rule, findi…
We present a comprehensive and versatile theoretical framework to study site and bond percolation on clustered and correlated random graphs. Our contribution can be summarized in three main points. (i) We introduce a set of iterative equations that solve the exact distribution of the size and composition of components in finite size quenched or random multitype graphs. (ii) We define a very general random graph ensemble that encompasses most of the models published to this day, and also that permits to model structural properties not yet included in a theoretical framework. Site and bond perco…
Using a recently developed algorithm for generic rigidity of two-dimensional graphs, we analyze rigidity and connectivity percolation transitions in two dimensions on lattices of linear size up to L=4096. We compare three different universality classes: The generic rigidity class; the connectivity class and; the generic ``braced square net''(GBSN). We analyze the spanning cluster density P_\infty, the backbone density P_B and the density of dangling ends P_D. In the generic rigidity and connectivity cases, the load-carrying component of the spanning cluster, the backbone, is fractal at p_c, so…
We reconsider the mean-field Potts model with $q$ interacting and $r$ non-interacting (invisible) states. The model was recently introduced to explain discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental observations of phase transitions in some systems where the $Z_q$-symmetry is spontaneously broken. We analyse the marginal dimensions of the model, i.e., the value of $r$ at which the order of the phase transition changes. In the $q=2$ case, we determine that value to be $r_c = 3.65(5)$; there is a second-order phase transition there when $r<r_c$ and a first-order one at $r>r_c$. We…

We introduce a new class of two-dimensional cellular automata with a bootstrap percolation-like dynamics. Each site can be either empty or occupied by a single particle and the dynamics follows a deterministic updating rule at discrete times which allows only emptying sites. We prove that the threshold density $ρ_c$ for convergence to a completely empty configuration is non trivial, $0<ρ_c<1$, contrary to standard bootstrap percolation. Furthermore we prove that in the subcritical regime, $ρ<ρ_c$, emptying always occurs exponentially fast and that $ρ_c$ coincides with the critical density for …
A hybrid phase transition (HPT) that exhibits properties of continuous and discontinuous phase transitions at the same transition point has been observed in diverse complex systems. Previous studies of the HPTs on complex networks mainly focused on whether the order parameter is continuous or discontinuous. However, more careful and fundamental questions on the critical behaviors of the HPT such as how the divergences of the susceptibility and of the correlation size are affected by the discontinuity of the order parameter have been addressed. Here, we consider a generalized epidemic model tha…
