Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $\a \in H^{1,1}(X,\R)$ a Kähler class. We study the metric completion of the space $\HH_\a$ of Kähler metrics in $\a$, when endowed with the Mabuchi $L^2$-metric $d$.
Using recent ideas of Darvas, we show that the metric completion $(\overline{\HH}_\a,d)$ of $(\HH_\a,d)$ is a CAT(0) space which can be identified with $\E^2(\a)$, a subset of the class $\E^1(\a)$ of positive closed currents with finite energy.
We further prove, in the toric setting, that $\overline{\HH}_{\a,tor}=\E_{tor}^2(\a)$.
In this paper, we show that any compact K$ä$hler manifold homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature admits a K$ä$hler-Einstein metric of general type. Moreover, we prove that, on a compact symplectic manifold $X$ homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature, for any almost complex structure $J$ compatible with the symplectic form, there is no non-constant $J$-holomorphic entire curve $f:C \rightarrow X$.
We reprove in an easier way a result of Brian Clarke: the completion of the space of Riemannian metrics of a compact, orientable smooth manifold with respect to the $L^2$-distance is CAT$(0)$. In particular we show that this completion is isometric to the space of $L^2$-maps from a standard probability space to a fixed CAT$(0)$ space.
We give a description of the completion of the manifold of all smooth Riemannian metrics on a fixed smooth, closed, finite-dimensional, orientable manifold with respect to a natural metric called the $L^2$ metric. The primary motivation for studying this problem comes from Teichmueller theory, where similar considerations lead to a completion of the well-known Weil-Petersson metric. We give an application of the main theorem to the completions of Teichmueller space with respect to a class of metrics that generalize the Weil-Petersson metric.
This is the author's Ph.D. thesis, submitted to the University of Leipzig. It deals with the $L^2$ Riemannian metric on the manifold of all smooth Riemannian metrics on a fixed closed, finite-dimensional manifold. The main body of the thesis is a description of the completion manifold of metrics with respect to the $L^2$ metric. The primary motivation for studying this problem comes from Teichmueller theory, where similar considerations lead to a completion of the well-known Weil-Petersson metric. We give an application of the main theorem to the completions of Teichmueller space with respect …
We study the manifold of all Riemannian metrics over a closed, finite-dimensional manifold. In particular, we investigate the topology on the manifold of metrics induced by the distance function of the L^2 Riemannian metric - so called because it induces an L^2 topology on each tangent space. It turns out that this topology on the tangent spaces gives rise to an L^1-type topology on the manifold of metrics itself. We study this new topology and its completion, which agrees homeomorphically with the completion of the L^2 metric. We also give a user-friendly criterion for convergence (with respe…
Given a fixed closed manifold M, we exhibit an explicit formula for the distance function of the canonical L^2 Riemannian metric on the manifold of all smooth Riemannian metrics on M. Additionally, we examine the (metric) completion of the manifold of metrics with respect to the L^2 metric and show that there exists a unique minimal path between any two points. This path is also given explicitly. As an application of these formulas, we show that the metric completion of the manifold of metrics is a CAT(0) space.
Let $(M^3,g_0)$ be a complete noncompact Riemannian 3-manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and with injectivity radius bounded away from zero. Suppose that the scalar curvature $R(x)\to 0$ as $x\to \infty$. Then the Ricci flow with initial data $(M^3,g_0)$ has a long time solution. This extends a recent result of Ma and Zhu. We also have a higher dimensional version, and we reprove a K$\ddot{a}$hler analogy due to Chau, Tam and Yu.
We present a novel cortically-inspired image completion algorithm. It uses a five dimensional sub-Riemannian cortical geometry modelling the orientation, spatial frequency and phase selective behavior of the cells in the visual cortex. The algorithm extracts the orientation, frequency and phase information existing in a given two dimensional corrupted input image via a Gabor transform and represent those values in terms of cortical cell output responses in the model geometry. Then it performs completion via a diffusion concentrated in a neighbourhood along the neural connections within the mod…
We consider geometries on the space of Riemannian metrics conformally equivalent to the widely studied Ebin L^2 metric. Among these we characterize a distinguished metric that can be regarded as a generalization of Calabi's metric on the space of Kähler metrics to the space of Riemannian metrics, and we study its geometry in detail. Unlike the Ebin metric, the geodesic equation involves non-local terms, and we solve it explicitly by using a constant of the motion. We then determine its completion, which gives the first example of a metric on the space of Riemannian metrics whose completion is …
We consider the space of Kahler metrics as a Riemannian submanifold of the space of Riemannian metrics, and study the associated submanifold geometry. In particular, we show that the intrinsic and extrinsic distance functions are equivalent. We also determine the metric completion of the space of Kahler metrics, making contact with recent generalizations of the Calabi-Yau Theorem due to Dinew, Guedj-Zeriahi, and Kolodziej. As an application, we obtain a new analytic stability criterion for the existence of a Kahler-Einstein metric on a Fano manifold in terms of the Ricci flow and the distance …
We introduce a new notion of a homogeneous pair for a pseudo-Riemannian metric $g$ and a positive function $f$ on a manifold $M$ admitting a free $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$-action. There are many examples admitting this structure. For example, (a) a class of pseudo-Hessian manifolds admitting a free $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$-action and a homogeneous potential function such as the moduli space of torsion-free $G_2$-structures, (b) the space of Riemannian metrics on a compact manifold, and (c) many moduli spaces of geometric structures such as torsion-free ${\rm Spin}(7)$-structures admit this structure. Hence w…
We present a set of global invariants, called "mass integrals", which can be defined for a large class of asymptotically hyperbolic Riemannian manifolds. When the "boundary at infinity" has spherical topology one single invariant is obtained, called the mass; we show positivity thereof. We apply the definition to conformally compactifiable manifolds, and show that the mass is completion-independent. We also prove the result, closely related to the problem at hand, that conformal completions of conformally compactifiable manifolds are unique.
Suppose $(X,ω)$ is a compact Kähler manifold. Following Mabuchi, the space of smooth Kähler potentials $\mathcal H$ can be endowed with a Riemannian structure, which induces an infinite dimensional path length metric space $(\mathcal H,d)$. We prove that the metric completion of $(\mathcal H,d)$ can be identified with $(\mathcal E^2(X,ω),\tilde d)$, and this latter space is a complete non-positively curved geodesic metric space. In obtaining this result, we will rely on envelope techniques which allow for a treatment in a very general context. Profiting from this, we will characterize the pair…
Let LM be the semigroup of non-degenerate based loops with a fixed initial/final frame in a Riemannian manifold M of dimension at least three. We compare the topology of LM to that of the loop space Omega FTM on the bundle of frames in the tangent bundle of M. We show that Omega FTM is the group completion of LM, and prove that it is obtained by localizing LM with respect to adding a "small twist".
We show that the metric universal cover of a plane with a puncture yields an example of a nonstandard hull properly containing the metric completion of a metric space. As mentioned by do Carmo, a nonextendible Riemannian manifold can be noncomplete, but in the broader category of metric spaces it becomes extendible. We give a short proof of a characterisation of the Heine-Borel property of the metric completion of a metric space M in terms of the absence of inapproachable finite points in *M.
We study the non-convex matrix factorization approach to matrix completion via Riemannian geometry. Based on an optimization formulation over a Grassmannian manifold, we characterize the landscape based on the notion of principal angles between subspaces. For the fully observed case, our results show that there is a region in which the cost is geodesically convex, and outside of which all critical points are strictly saddle. We empirically study the partially observed case based on our findings.
We give examples illustrating the fact that the different space/time splittings of the tangent bundle of a semi-Riemannian spin manifold give rise to non-equivalent norms on the space of compactly supported sections of the spinor bundle, and as a result, to different completions. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for two space/time splittings to define equivalent norms in terms of a generalized Doppler shift between maximal negative definite subspaces. We explore some consequences for the Noncommutative Geometry program.
A classical result in Riemannian geometry states that the absolutely continuous curves into a (finite-dimensional) Riemannian manifold form an infinite-dimensional manifold. In the present paper this construction and related results are generalised to absolutely continuous curves with values in a strong Riemannian manifolds. As an application we consider extensions of the square root velocity transform (SRVT) framework for shape analysis. Computations in this framework frequently lead to curves which leave the shape space (of smooth curves), and are only contained in a completion. In the vecto…
We consider sequences of metrics, $g_j$, on a Riemannian manifold, $M$, which converge smoothly on compact sets away from a singular set $S\subset M$, to a metric, $g_\infty$, on $M\setminus S$. We prove theorems which describe when $M_j=(M, g_j)$ converge in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to the metric completion, $(M_\infty,d_\infty)$, of $(M\setminus S, g_\infty)$. To obtain these theorems, we study the intrinsic flat limits of the sequences. A new method, we call hemispherical embedding, is applied to obtain explicit estimates on the Gromov-Hausdorff and Intrinsic Flat distances between Rieman…
We extend Siu's and Sampson's celebrated rigidity results to non-compact domains. More precisely, let $M$ be a smooth quasi-projective variety with universal cover $\tilde M$ and let $\tilde X$ be a symmetric space of non-compact type, a locally finite Euclidean building or the Weil-Petersson completion of the Teichmüller space of a surface of genus $g$ and $p$ punctures with $3g-3+p>0$. Under suitable assumptions on a homomorphism $ρ: π_1(M) \rightarrow \mathsf{Isom}(\tilde X)$, we show that there exists a $ρ$-equivariant pluriharmonic map $\tilde u: \tilde M \rightarrow \tilde X$ of possibly…
Motivated by applications in the field of shape analysis, we study reparametrization invariant, fractional order Sobolev-type metrics on the space of smooth regular curves $\operatorname{Imm}(S^1,\mathbb{R}^d)$ and on its Sobolev completions $\mathcal{I}^{q}(S^1,\mathbb{R}^{d})$. We prove local well-posedness of the geodesic equations both on the Banach manifold $\mathcal{I}^{q}(S^1,\mathbb{R}^{d})$ and on the Fréchet-manifold $\operatorname{Imm}(S^1,\mathbb{R}^d)$ provided the order of the metric is greater or equal to one. In addition we show that the $H^s$-metric induces a strong Riemannian…
The space $\mathcal{H}$ of "almost calibrated" $(1,1)$ forms on a compact Kähler manifold plays an important role in the study of the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation of mirror symmetry as emphasized by recent work of the second author and Yau, and is related by mirror symmetry to the space of positive Lagrangians studied by Solomon. This paper initiates the study of the geometry of $\mathcal{H}$. We show that $\mathcal{H}$ is an infinite dimensional Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature. In the hypercritical phase case we show that $\mathcal{H}$ has a well-defined me…
We study metrics on shape space of immersions that have a particularly simple horizontal bundle. More specifically, we consider reparametrization invariant Sobolev metrics $G$ on the space $\operatorname{Imm}(M,N)$ of immersions of a compact manifold $M$ in a Riemannian manifold $(N,\overline{g})$. The tangent space $T_f\operatorname{Imm}(M,N)$ at each immersion $f$ has two natural splittings: one into components that are tangential/normal to the surface $f$ (with respect to $\overline{g}$) and another one into vertical/horizontal components (with respect to the projection onto the shape space…
