Let M be an irreducible Riemannian symmetric space. The index of M is the minimal codimension of a (non-trivial) totally geodesic submanifold of M. We prove that the index is bounded from below by the rank of the symmetric space. We also classify the irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces whose index is less or equal than 3.
We find the index of $\widetilde{\nabla}$-quasi-conformally symmetric and $\widetilde{\nabla}$-concircularly symmetric semi-Riemannian manifolds, where $\widetilde{\nabla}$ is metric connection.
In 1980, Onishchik introduced the index of a Riemannian symmetric space as the minimal codimension of a (proper) totally geodesic submanifold. He calculated the index for symmetric spaces of rank less than or equal to 2, but for higher rank it was unclear how to tackle the problem. In earlier papers we developed several approaches to this problem, which allowed us to calculate the index for many symmetric spaces. Our systematic approach led to a conjecture for how to calculate the index. The purpose of this paper is to verify the conjecture.
The index of a Riemannian symmetric space is the minimal codimension of a proper totally geodesic submanifold (Onishchik, 1980). There is a conjecture by the first two authors for how to calculate the index. In this paper we give an affirmative answer to this conjecture for the exceptional Riemannian symmetric spaces and for the classical symmetric spaces Sp(r,R)/U(r). Our methodology is new and based on the idea of using slice representations for studying totally geodesic submanifolds.
Let M be an irreducible Riemannian symmetric space. The index i(M) of M is the minimal codimension of a totally geodesic submanifold of M. In previous work the authors proved that i(M) is bounded from below by the rank rk(M) of M. In this paper we classify all irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces M for which the equality holds, that is, rk(M) = i(M). In this context we also obtain an explicit classification of all non-semisimple maximal totally geodesic submanifolds in irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type and show that they are closely related to irreducible symmetric …
We study the singularities of the exponential map in semi Riemannian locally symmetric manifolds. Conjugate points along geodesics depend only on real negative eigenvalues of the curvature tensor, and their contribution to the Maslov index of the geodesic is computed explicitly. We prove that degeneracy of conjugate points, which is a phenomenon that can only occur in semi-Riemannian geometry, is caused in the locally symmetric case by the lack of diagonalizability of the curvature tensor. The case of Lie groups endowed with a bi-invariant metric is studied in some detail, and conditions are g…
We classify maximal totally geodesic submanifolds in exceptional symmetric spaces up to isometry. Moreover, we introduce an invariant for certain totally geodesic embeddings of semisimple symmetric spaces, which we call the Dynkin index. We prove a result analogous to the index conjecture: for every irreducible symmetric space of non-compact type, there exists a totally geodesic submanifold which is of minimal codimension and whose non-flat irreducible factors have Dynkin index equal to one.
We find many examples of compact Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ whose closed minimal hypersurfaces satisfy a lower bound on their index that is linear in their first Betti number. Moreover, we show that these bounds remain valid when the metric $g$ is replaced with $g'$ in a neighbourhood of $g$. Our examples $(M,g)$ consist of certain minimal isoparametric hypersurfaces of spheres; their focal manifolds; the Lie groups $SU(n)$ for $n\leq 17$, and $Sp(n)$ for all $n$; and all quaternionic Grassmannians.
Let M be an irreducible Riemannian symmetric space. The index i(M) of M is the minimal codimension of a (non-trivial) totally geodesic submanifold of M. The purpose of this note is to determine the index i(M) for all irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces M of type (II) and (IV).
A closed surface evolving under mean curvature flow becomes singular in finite time. Near the singularity, the surface resembles a self-shrinker, a surface that shrinks by dilations under mean curvature flow. If the singularity is modeled on a self-shrinker other than a round sphere or cylinder, then the singularity is unstable under perturbations of the flow. One can quantify this instability using the index of the self-shrinker when viewed as a critical point of the entropy functional. In this work, we prove an upper bound on the index of rotationally symmetric self-shrinking tori in terms o…
In this paper we study massless fermions coupled to spherically symmetric $SU(N)$ monopoles without Yukawa couplings between the Higgs and fermion fields. The corresponding Dirac operator is not Fredholm and the associated eigenfunctions are not $L^2$-normalizable. Here we derive a formula for the dimension of the plane-wave normalizable kernel of such a Dirac operator for fermions of any representation of $SU(N)$ in the presence of any spherically symmetric monopole background. Notably, our results also apply to fermions coupled to monopoles that preserve non-abelian gauge symmetry.
We show that closed, immersed, minimal hypersurfaces in a compact symmetric space satisfy a lower bound on the index plus nullity, which depends linearly on their first Betti number. Moreover, if either the minimal hypersurface satisfies a certain genericity condition, or if the ambient space is a product of two CROSSes, we improve this to a lower bound on the index alone, which is affine in the first Betti number. To prove these, we introduce a generalization of isometric immersions in Euclidean space. Compact symmetric spaces admit (and in fact are characterized by) such a structure with ske…
We construct canonical frames and find all maximally symmetric models for a natural generic class of corank 2 distributions on manifolds of odd dimension greater or equal to 7. This class of distributions is characterized by the following two conditions: the pencil of 2-forms associated with the corresponding Pfaffian system has the maximal possible first Kronecker index and the Lie square of the subdistribution generated by the kernels of all these 2-forms is equal to the original distribution. In particular, we show that the unique, up to a local equivalence, maximally symmetric model in thi…
We develop a general structure theory for compact homogeneous Riemannian manifolds in relation to the co-index of symmetry. We will then use these results to classify irreducible, simply connected, compact homogeneous Riemannian manifolds whose co-index of symmetry is less or equal than three. We will also construct many examples which arise from the theory of polars and centrioles in Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact type.
We generalize a method by L. Ambrozio, A. Carlotto, and B. Sharp to study the Morse index of closed f-minimal hypersurfaces isometrically immersed in a general weighted manifold. The technique permits, in particular, to obtain a linear lower bound on the Morse index via the first Betti number for closed f-minimal hypersurfaces in products of some compact rank one symmetric spaces with an Euclidean factor, endowed with the rigid shrinking gradient Ricci soliton structure. These include, as particular cases, all cylindric shrinking gradient Ricci solitons.
We prove an extension of the Index Theorem for Morse-Sturm systems of the form $-V''+RV=0$, where R is symmetric with respect to a (non positive) symmetric bilinear form, and thus the corresponding differential operator is not self-adjoint. The result is then applied to the case of a Jacobi equation along a geodesic in a Lorentzian manifold, obtaining an extension of the Morse Index Theorem for Lorentzian geodesics with variable initial endpoints. Given a Lorentzian manifold (M,g), we consider a geodesic $γ$ in M starting orthogonally to a smooth submanifold P of M. Under suitable hypotheses, …
We study various topological invariants on a torsional geometry in the presence of a totally anti-symmetric torsion H under the closed condition dH = 0, which appears in string theory compactification scenarios. By using the identification between the Clifford algebra on the geometry and the canonical quantization condition of fermions in quantum mechanics, we construct N=1 quantum mechanical sigma model in the Hamiltonian formalism. We extend this model to N=2 system, equipped with the totally anti-symmetric tensor associated with the torsion on the target space geometry. Next we construct tr…
We show that if $g$ is a Riemannian metric on a closed piecewise locally symmetric manifold $M$, then the lift of $g$ to the universal cover $\widetilde{M}$ has a discrete isometry group. We also show that the index $[\Isom(\widetilde{M}): π_1(M)]$ is bounded by a constant independent of $g$.
