Interaction of Alfven waves with plasma inhomogeneities generates phase mixing which can lead to dissipate Alfven waves and to heat the solar plasma. Here we study the dissipation of Alfven waves by phase mixing due to viscosity and resistivity variations with height. We also consider nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in our theoretical model. Non-linear terms of MHD equations include perturbed velocity, magnetic field, and density. To investigate the damping of Alfven waves in a stratified atmosphere of solar spicules, we solve the non-linear MHD equations in the x-z plane. Our simulations show that the damping is enhanced due to viscosity and resistivity gradients. Moreover, energy variations is influenced due to nonlinear terms in MHD equations.
The excitation of Alfvenic waves in the solar spicules due to the localized Alfvenic pulse is investigated. A set of incompressible MHD equations in two dimensional $x-z$ plane with steady flows and sheared magnetic fields is solved. Stratification due to gravity and transition region between chromosphere and corona are taken into account. An initially localized Alfvenic pulse launched below the transition region can penetrate from transition region into the corona. We show that the period of transversal oscillations is in agreement with those observed in spicules. Moreover, it is found that t…
Alfvenic waves are thought to play an important role in coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. Here we investigate the dissipation of such waves due to phase mixing at the presence of shear flow and field in the stratified atmosphere of solar spicules. The initial flow is assumed to be directed along spicule axis and to vary linearly in the x direction and the equilibrium magnetic field is taken 2-dimensional and divergence-free. It is determined that the shear flow and field can fasten the damping of standing Alfven waves. In spite of propagating Alfven waves, standing Alfven waves in S…
In the lower solar atmosphere, the chromosphere is permeated by jets known as spicules, in which plasma is propelled at speeds of 50 to 150 kilometers per second into the corona. The origin of the spicules is poorly understood, although they are expected to play a role in heating the million-degree corona and are associated with Alfvénic waves that help drive the solar wind. We compare magnetohydrodynamic simulations of spicules with observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph and the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope. Spicules are shown to occur when magnetic tension is amplified an…
Alfvenic waves are thought to play an important role in coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. Recent observations by Hinode/SOT showed that the spicules mostly exhibit upward propagating high frequency waves. Here we investigate the dissipation of such waves due to phase mixing in stratified environment of solar spicules. Since they are highly dynamic structures with speeds at about significant fractions of the Alfven phase speed, we take into account the effects of steady flows. Our numerical simulations show that in the presence of stratification due to gravity, damping takes place in…
Alfvenic waves are thought to play an important role in coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. Here we investigate the dissipation of standing Alfven waves due to phase mixing at the presence of steady flow and sheared magnetic field in the stratified atmosphere of solar spicules. The transition region between chromosphere and corona has also been considered. The initial flow is assumed to be directed along spicule axis, and the equilibrium magnetic field is taken 2-dimensional and divergence-free. It is determined that in contrast to propagating Alfven waves, standing Alfven waves dissi…
The aim here is to model the standing torsional oscillations in solar spicules in the presence of density stratification, magnetic field expansion, and steady flows. By implementing cylindrical geometry, the eigenfrequencies, eigenfunctions, and the period ratio P_1/P_2 of these waves is obtained for finite plasma-beta. The shifts created by the steady flow justifies the divergence of the observed period ratio for the first and second periods from the number 2.
The effects of both density stratification and magnetic field expansion on torsional Alfven waves in solar spicules are studied. Also, their eigenfrequencies, eigenfunctions, and the period ratio P_1/P_2 are obtained with a novel mathematical method. We showed that under some circumstances this ratio can approach its observational value even though it departs from its canonical value of $2$. Moreover, Eigenfunction height variations show that the oscillations amplitude are increasing towards higher heights which is in agreement with the observations. This means that with a little increase in h…
Two of the central problems in our understanding of the solar chromosphere are how the upper chromosphere is heated and what drives spicules. Estimates of the required chromospheric heating, based on radiative and conductive losses suggest a rate of ${\sim} 0.1 \mathrm{\:erg\:cm^{-3}\:s^{-1}}$ in the lower chromosphere dropping to ${\sim} 10^{-3} \mathrm{\:erg\:cm^{-3}\:s^{-1}}$ in the upper chromosphere (\citet{Avrett1981}). The chromosphere is also permeated by spicules, higher density plasma from the lower atmosphere propelled upwards at speeds of ${\sim} 10-20 \mathrm{\:km\:s^{-1}}$, for s…
We have performed MHD simulations of Alfven wave propagation along an open flux tube in the solar atmosphere. In our numerical model, Alfven waves are generated by the photospheric granular motion. As the wave generator, we used a derived temporal spectrum of the photospheric granular motion from G-band movies of Hinode/SOT. It is shown that the total energy flux at the corona becomes larger and the transition region height becomes higher in the case when we use the observed spectrum rather than white/pink noise spectrum as the wave generator. This difference can be explained by the Alfven wav…
Alfvén waves are responsible for the transfer of magnetic energy in the magnetized plasma. They are involved in heating solar atmosphere and driving solar wind through various nonlinear processes. Since the magnetic field configurations directly affect the nonlinearity of Alfvén waves, it is important to investigate how they relate to the solar atmosphere and wind structure through the nonlinear propagation of Alfvén waves. In this study, we carried out the one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations to realize the above relation. The results show that when the nonlinearity of Alfvén waves…
Hydrodynamic jets are unstable to the kink instability (m=1 mode in cylindrical geometry) owing to the centripetal force, which increases the transverse displacement of the jet. When the jet moves along a magnetic field, then the Lorentz force tries to decrease the displacement and stabilises the instability of sub-Alfvenic flows. The threshold of the instability depends on the Alfven Mach number (the ratio of Alfven and jet speeds). We suggest that the dynamic kink instability may be of importance to explain observed transverse motions of type II spicules in the solar atmosphere. We show that…
We perform a 2.5 dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation to understand a comprehensive view of the formation of spicule-like cool jets due to initial transverse velocity pulses akin to Alfvén pulses in the solar chromosphere. We invoke multiple velocity ($V_{z}$) pulses between 1.5 and 2.0 Mm in the solar atmosphere, which create the initial transverse velocity perturbations. These pulses transfer energy non-linearly to the field aligned perturbations due to the ponderomotive force. This physical process further creates the magnetoacoustic shocks followed by quasi-periodic plasma moti…
Context. For investigating spicules from the photosphere to coronal heights, the new Hinode/SOT long series of high resolution observations from Space taken in CaII H line emission offers an improved way to look at their remarkable dynamical behavior using images free of seeing effects. They should be put in the context of the huge amount of already accumulated material from ground-based instruments, including high- resolution spectra of off-limb spicules. Results. The surge-like behavior of solar polar region spicules supports the untwisting multi-component interpretation of spicules exhibiti…
Type-II solar spicules appear as long, thin, highly dynamic strands of field-tied matter that feed significant mass and energy to the corona and solar wind. A recent result is that they exhibit torsional Alfvén waves in addition to accelerating outflows and swaying motions due to transverse Alfvénic waves. I summarize this finding and then re-interpret older observations in its light: the striking similarity of near-limb scenes in the outer blue and red wings of Hα, and the tilts of absorption lines with respect to emission lines in eclipse spectra taken in 1973.
We take stock of recent observations that identify the episodic plasma heating and injection of Alfvenic energy at the base of fast solar wind (in coronal holes). The plasma heating is associated with the occurrence of chromospheric spicules that leave the lower solar atmosphere at speeds of order 100km/s, the hotter coronal counterpart of the spicule emits radiation characteristic of root heating that rapidly reaches temperatures of the order of 1MK. Furthermore, the same spicules and their coronal counterparts ("Propagating Coronal Disturbances"; PCD) exhibit large amplitude, high speed, Alf…
Since their discovery, spicules have attracted increased attention as energy/mass bridges between the dense and dynamic photosphere and the tenuous hot solar corona. Mechanical energy of photospheric random and coherent motions can be guided by magnetic field lines, spanning from the interior to the upper parts of the solar atmosphere, in the form of waves and oscillations. Since spicules are one of the most pronounced features of the chromosphere, the energy transport they participate in can be traced by the observations of their oscillatory motions. Oscillations in spicules have been observe…
Alfvénic waves are thought to play an important role in coronal heating and acceleration of solar wind. Here we investigated the statistical properties of Alfvénic waves along spicules (jets that protrude into the corona) in a polar coronal hole using high cadence observations of the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) onboard \emph{Hinode}. We developed a technique for the automated detection of spicules and high-frequency waves. We detected 89 spicules, and found: (1) a mix of upward propagating, downward propagating, as well as standing waves (occurrence rates of 59%, 21%, and 20%, respectively).…
Spicules are long, thin, highly dynamic features that jut out ubiquitously from the solar limb. They dominate the interface between the chromosphere and corona and may provide significant mass and energy to the corona. We use high-quality observations with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope to establish that so-called type II spicules are characterized by the simultaneous action of three different types of motion: 1. field-aligned flows of order 50-100 km/s, 2. swaying motions of order 15-20 km/s, and 3. torsional motions of order 25-30 km/s. The first two modes have been studied in detail before…
A magnetohydrodynamic model is used to determine conditions under which the Lorentz force accelerates plasma to type 2 spicule speeds in the chromosphere. The model generalizes a previous model to include a more realistic pre-spicule state, and the vertical viscous force. Two cases of acceleration under upper chromospheric conditions are considered. The magnetic field strength for these cases is <= 12.5 and 25 G. Plasma is accelerated to terminal vertical speeds of 66 and 78 km/s in 100 s, compared with 124 and 397 km/s for the case of zero viscosity. The flows are localized within horizontal …
The solar chromosphere contains thin, highly dynamic strands of plasma known as spicules. Recently, it has been suggested that the smallest and fastest (Type II) spicules are identical to intermittent jets observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph. These jets appear to expand out along open magnetic field lines rooted in unipolar network regions of coronal holes. In this paper we revisit a thirty-year-old idea that spicules may be caused by upward forces associated with Alfven waves. These forces involve the conversion of transverse Alfven waves into compressive acoustic-like waves…
In addition to their jet-like dynamic behaviour, spicules usually exhibit strong transverse speeds, multi-stranded structure and heating from chromospheric to transition region temperatures. In this work we first analyse \textit{Hinode} \& \textit{IRIS} observations of spicules and find different behaviours in terms of their Doppler velocity evolution and collective motion of their sub-structure. Some have a Doppler shift sign change that is rather fixed along the spicule axis, and lack coherence in the oscillatory motion of strand-like structure, matching rotation models or long wavelength to…
It is known that hydrodynamic triangular jets are unstable to antisymmetric kink perturbations. The inclusion of magnetic field may lead to the stabilisation of the jets. Jets and complex magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere, which suggests the possibility of the kink instability in certain cases. The aim of the paper is to study the kink instability of triangular jets sandwiched between magnetic tubes/slabs and its possible connection to observed properties of the jets in the solar atmosphere. A dispersion equation governing the kink perturbations is obtained through matchin…
Transversal oscillations of spicules axes may be related to the propagation of magnetohydrodynamic waves along them. These waves may become unstable and the instability can be of the Kelvin-Helmholtz type. We use the dispersion relation of kink mode derived from linearized magnetohydrodynamic equations. The input parameters of the derived dispersion equation, namely, spicules and their ambient medium densities ratios as well as their corresponding magnetic fields ratios, are considered to be within the range $0-1$. By solving the dispersion equation numerically, we show that for higher densiti…
In a real medium which has oscillations, the perturbations can cause the energy transfer between different modes. The perturbation interpreted as an interaction between the modes is inferred as mode coupling. Mode coupling process in an inhomogeneous medium such as solar spicules may lead to the coupling of kink waves to local Alfven waves. This coupling occurs practically in any conditions when there is smooth variation in density in the radial direction. This process is seen as the decay of transverse kink waves in the medium. To study the damping of kink waves due to mode coupling, a 2.5-di…
We consider a first important parameter of spicules as observed above the solar visible limb: their apparent diameter as a function of the height above the limb which determines their aspect ratio and leads to the discussion of their magnetic origin using the flux tube approximation. We found that indeed spicules show a whole range of diameters, including unresolved "interacting spicules" (I-S), depending of the definition chosen to characterize this ubiquitous dynamical phenomenon occurring into a low coronal surrounding. 1-D Fourier amplitude spectra (AS) made at different heights above the …

Many solar coronal jets result from erupting miniature-filament ("minifilament") magnetic flux ropes that reconnect with encountered surrounding far-reaching field. Many of those minifilament flux ropes are apparently built and triggered to erupt by magnetic flux cancelation. If that cancelation (or some other process) results in the flux rope's field having twist, then the reconnection with the far-reaching field transfers much of that twist to that reconnected far-reaching field. In cases where that surrounding field is open, the twist can propagate to far distances from the Sun as a magneti…
We investigate the behaviour of nonlinear, nonideal Alfvén wave propagation within an inhomogeneous magnetic environment. The governing MHD equations are solved in 1D and 2D using both analytical techniques and numerical simulations. We find clear evidence for the ponderomotive effect and visco-resistive heating. The ponderomotive effect generates a longitudinal component to the transverse Alfvén wave, with a frequency twice that of the driving frequency. Analytical work shows the addition of resistive heating. This leads to a substantial increase in the local temperature and thus gas pressure…
Viscosity is discussed in multicomponent partially and fully ionized plasma, and its effects on two very different waves (Alfven and Langmuir) in solar atmosphere. A full set of viscosity coefficients is presented which includes coefficients for electrons, protons and hydrogen atoms. These are applied to layers with mostly magnetized protons in solar chromosphere where the Alfven wave could in principle be expected. The viscosity coefficients are calculated and presented graphically for the altitudes between 700 and 2200 km, and required corresponding cross sections for various types of collis…
Braginskii MHD provides a more accurate description of many plasma environments than classical MHD since it actively treats the stress tensor using a closure derived from physical principles. Stress tensor effects nonetheless remain relatively unexplored for solar MHD phenomena, especially in nonlinear regimes. This paper analytically examines nonlinear damping and longitudinal flows of propagating shear Alfvén waves. Most previous studies of MHD waves in Braginskii MHD considered the strict linear limit of vanishing wave perturbations. We show that those former linear results only apply to Al…
Chromospheric and prominence plasmas contain neutral atoms, which may change the plasma dynamics through collision with ions. Most of the atoms are neutral hydrogen, but a significant amount of neutral helium may also be present in the plasma with a particular temperature. Damping of MHD waves due to ion collision with neutral hydrogen is well studied, but the effects of neutral helium are largely unknown. We aim to study the effect of neutral helium in the damping of Alfven waves in solar partially ionized plasmas. We consider three-fluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) approximation, where one com…
Previous numerical studies have identified "phase mixing" of low-frequency Alfven waves as a mean of parallel electric field amplification and acceleration of electrons in a collisionless plasma. Theoretical explanations are given of how this produces an amplification of the parallel electric field, and as a consequence, also leads to enhanced collisionless damping of the wave by energy transfer to the electrons. Our results are based on the properties of the Alfven waves in a warm plasma which are obtained from drift-kinetic theory, in particular, the rate of their electron Landau damping. Ph…
Magneto-solid-mechanical model of two-component, core-crust, paramagnetic neutron star responding to quake-induced perturbation by differentially rotational, torsional, oscillations of crustal electron-nuclear solid-state plasma about axis of magnetic field frozen in the immobile paramagnetic core is developed. Particular attention is given to the node-free torsional crust-against-core vibrations under combined action of Lorentz magnetic and Hooke's elastic forces; the damping is attributed to Newtonian force of shear viscose stresses in crustal solid-state plasma. The spectral formulae for th…
We investigate the conditions at which high-mode magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves propagating in a spinning solar macrospicule can become unstable with respect to the Kelvin--Helmholtz instability (KHI). We consider the macrospicule as a weakly twisted cylindrical magnetic flux tube moving along and rotating around its axis. Our study is based on the dispersion relation (in complex variables) of MHD waves obtained from the linearized MHD equations of an incompressible plasma for the macrospicule and cool ($β= 0$, rate of the plasma to the magnetic pressure) plasma for its environment. This disp…
Using data obtained by the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard Hinode, we have per- formed a survey of obvious and persistent (without significant damping) Doppler shift oscillations in the corona. We have found mainly two types of oscillations from February to April in 2007. One type is found at loop footpoint regions, with a dominant period around 10 minutes. They are characterized by coherent behavior of all line parameters (line intensity, Doppler shift, line width and profile asymmetry), apparent blue shift and blueward asymmetry throughout almost the en- tire duration. Such oscillatio…
Dissipation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave energy has been proposed as a viable heating mechanism in the solar chromospheric plasma. Here, we use a simplified one-dimensional model of the chromosphere to theoretically investigate the physical processes and the spatial scales that are required for the efficient dissipation of Alfvén waves and slow magnetoacoustic waves. We consider the governing equations for a partially ionized hydrogen-helium plasma in the single-fluid MHD approximation and include realistic wave damping mechanisms that may operate in the chromosphere, namely Ohmic and amb…
We present results from three-dimensional hybrid-kinetic simulations of Alfvénic turbulence in a high-beta, collisionless plasma. The key feature of such turbulence is the interplay between local wave--wave interactions between the fluctuations in the cascade and the non-local wave-particle interactions associated with kinetic micro-instabilities driven by anisotropy in the thermal pressure (namely, firehose, mirror, and ion-cyclotron). We present theoretical estimates for, and calculate directly from the simulations, the effective collisionality and plasma viscosity in pressure-anisotropic hi…
We investigate by means of two-dimensional incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical simulations, the onset phase of the fast collisional magnetic reconnection regime that is supported by the formation of plasmoid chains when the Lundquist number S exceeds a critical value. The present study extends previous results obtained at magnetic Prandtl number Pm = 1 (Baty 2020) to a range of different Pm values. We use FINMHD code where a set of reduced visco-resistive MHD equations is employed to form two quasi-singular current layers as a consequence of the tilt instability. The results rei…
We consider a series of MHD simulations in which a small amplitude, transverse velocity perturbation is introduced into a complex magnetic field. We analysed the deformation of the wave fronts as the perturbation propagates through the braided magnetic structures and explore the nature of Alfvénic wave phase mixing in this regime. Spatial gradients in the local Alfvén speed and variations in the length of magnetic field lines ensure that small scales form throughout the propagating wave front due to phase mixing. Additionally, the presence of complex, intricate current sheets associated with t…
We investigate the linear stability of a sinusoidal shear flow with an initially uniform streamwise magnetic field in the framework of incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with finite resistivity and viscosity. This flow is known to be unstable to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the hydrodynamic case. The same is true in ideal MHD, where dissipation is neglected, provided the magnetic field strength does not exceed a critical threshold beyond which magnetic tension stabilizes the flow. Here, we demonstrate that including viscosity and resistivity introduces two new modes of instabilit…
We study 14 large solar jets observed in polar coronal holes. In EUV movies from SDO/AIA, each jet appears similar to most X-ray jets and EUV jets that erupt in coronal holes, but each is exceptional in that it goes higher than most, so high that it is observed in the outer corona beyond 2.2 RSun in images from the SOHO/LASCO/C2 coronagraph. From AIA He II 304 Å movies and LASCO/C2 running-difference images of these high-reaching jets, we find: (1) the front of the jet transits the corona below 2.2 RSun at a speed typically several times the sound speed; (2) each jet displays an exceptionally …
We have derived the full set of MHD equations for incompressible shear flow of a magnetized fluid and considered their solution in the wave-vector space. The linearized equations give the famous amplification of slow magnetosonic waves and describe the magnetorotational instability. The nonlinear terms in our analysis are responsible for the creation of turbulence and self-sustained spectral density of the MHD (Alfven and pseudo-Alfven) waves. Perspectives for numerical simulations of weak turbulence and calculation of the effective viscosity of accretion disks are shortly discussed in k-space…
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) has been obtaining near- and far-ultraviolet images and spectra of the solar atmosphere since July 2013. The unique combination of near and far-ultraviolet spectra and images at subarcsecond resolution and high cadence allows the tracing of mass and energy through the critical interface between the solar surface and the corona or solar wind. IRIS has enabled research into the fundamental physical processes thought to play a role in the low solar atmosphere such as ion-neutral interactions, magnetic reconnection, the generation, propagation, and …
We revisit the well known Sweet-Parker (SP) model for magnetic reconnection in the framework of two dimensional incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. The steady-state solution is re-derived by considering a non zero viscosity via the magnetic Prandtl number $P_m$. Moreover, contrary to the original SP model, a particular attention is paid to the possibility that the inflowing magnetic field $B_e$ and the length of the current layer $L$ are not necessarily fixed and may depend on the dissipation parameters. Using two different ideally unstable setups to form the current sheet, namely the tilt an…
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kink waves are ubiquitously observed in the solar atmosphere. The propagation and damping of these waves may play relevant roles for the transport and dissipation of energy in the solar atmospheric medium. However, in the atmospheric plasma dissipation of transverse MHD wave energy by viscosity or resistivity needs very small spatial scales to be efficient. Here, we theoretically investigate the generation of small scales in nonuniform solar magnetic flux tubes due to phase mixing of MHD kink waves. We go beyond the usual approach based on the existence of a global qu…
The plasmoid instability in visco-resistive current sheets is analyzed in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. The linear growth rate and the wavenumber are found to scale as $S^{1/4} {\left( {1 + {P_m}} \right)}^{-5/8}$ and $S^{3/8} {\left( {1 + {P_m}} \right)}^{-3/16}$ with respect to the Lundquist number $S$ and the magnetic Prandtl number $P_m$. Furthermore, the linear layer width is shown to scale as $S^{-1/8} {(1+P_m)}^{1/16}$. The growth of the plasmoids slows down from an exponential growth to an algebraic growth when they enter into the nonlinear regime. In particular, the time-scal…
Negative energy wave phenomena may appear in shear flows in the presence of a wave decay mechanism and external energy supply. We study the appearance of negative energy surface waves in a plasma cylinder in the incompressible limit. The cylinder is surrounded by an axial magnetic field and by a plasma of different density. Considering flow inside and viscosity outside the flux tube, we derive dispersion relations, and obtain analytical solutions for the phase speed and growth rate (increment) of the waves. It is found that the critical speed shear for the occurrence of the dissipative instabi…
