The East process is a 1D kinetically constrained interacting particle system, introduced in the physics literature in the early 90's to model liquid-glass transitions. Spectral gap estimates of Aldous and Diaconis in 2002 imply that its mixing time on $L$ sites has order $L$. We complement that result and show cutoff with an $O(\sqrt{L})$-window.
The main ingredient is an analysis of the front of the process (its rightmost zero in the setup where zeros facilitate updates to their right). One expects the front to advance as a biased random walk, whose normal fluctuations would imply cutoff with an $O(\sqrt{L})$-window. The law of the process behind the front plays a crucial role: Blondel showed that it converges to an invariant measure $ν$, on which very little is known. Here we obtain quantitative bounds on the speed of convergence to $ν$, finding that it is exponentially fast. We then derive that the increments of the front behave as a stationary mixing sequence of random variables, and a Stein-method based argument of Bolthausen ('82) implies a CLT for the location of the front, yielding the cutoff result.
Finally, we supplement these results by a study of analogous kinetically constrained models on trees, again establishing cutoff, yet this time with an $O(1)$-window.
This paper will examine the cutoff for a random process on the hypercube, $\{0, 1\}^L$, closely related to the East Process. In this process, every coordinate has two 1/2-Poisson clocks at each coordinate which add the coordinate to the previous or next one when they ring. We show that the cutoff is $L/v$ with a window of order $\sqrt{L}$, where $v$ is the speed of the front. We compare these results to the cutoff for the East Process and the cutoff for a non-local version of this same process studied by Ganguly, Lubetzky, and Martinelli as well as Ben-Hamou and Peres.
We consider random walk on the group of uni-upper triangular matrices with entries in $\mathbb{F}_2$ which forms an important example of a nilpotent group. Peres and Sly (2013) proved tight bounds on the mixing time of this walk up to constants. It is well known that the single column projection of this chain is the one dimensional East process. In this article, we complement the Peres-Sly result by proving a cutoff result for the mixing of finitely many columns in the upper triangular matrix walk at the same location as the East process of the same dimension. Moreover, we also show that the s…
The East process, a well known reversible linear chain of spins, represents the prototype of a general class of interacting particle systems with constraints modeling the dynamics of real glasses. In this paper we consider a generalization of the East process living in the d-dimensional lattice and we establish new progresses on the out- of-equilibrium behavior. In particular we prove a form of (local) exponential ergodicity when the initial distribution is far from the stationary one and we prove that the mixing time in a finite box grows linearly in the side of the box.
In this paper, we investigate the mixing time of the simple exclusion process on the circle with $N$ sites, with a number of particle $k(N)$ tending to infinity, both from the worst initial condition and from a typical initial condition. We show that the worst-case mixing time is asymptotically equivalent to $(8π^2)^{-1}N^2\log k$, while the cutoff window, is identified to be $N^2$. Starting from a typical condition, we show that there is no cutoff and that the mixing time is of order $N^2$.
We consider a natural front evolution problem the East process on $\mathbb{Z}^d, d\ge 2,$ a well studied kinetically constrained model for which the facilitation mechanism is oriented along the coordinate directions, as the equilibrium density $q$ of the facilitating vertices vanishes. Starting with a unique unconstrained vertex at the origin, let $S(t)$ consist of those vertices which became unconstrained within time $t$ and, for an arbitrary positive direction $\mathbf x,$ let $v_{\max}(\mathbf x),v_{\min}(\mathbf x )$ be the maximal/minimal velocities at which $S(t)$ grows in that direction…
The East model is a one-dimensional, non-attractive interacting particle system with Glauber dynamics, in which a flip is prohibited at a site $x$ if the right neighbour $x+1$ is occupied. Starting from a configuration entirely occupied on the left half-line, we prove a law of large numbers for the position of the left-most zero (the front), as well as ergodicity of the process seen from the front. For want of attractiveness, the one-dimensional shape theorem is not derived by the usual coupling arguments, but instead by quantifying the local relaxation to the non-equilibrium invariant measure…
We consider the simple exclusion process with $k$ particles on a segment of length $N$ performing random walks with transition $p>1/2$ to the right and $q=1-p$ to the left. We focus on the case where the asymmetry in the jump rates $b=p-q>0$ vanishes in the limit when $N$ and $k$ tend to infinity, and obtain sharp asymptotics for the mixing times of this sequence of Markov chains in the two cases where the asymmetry is either much larger or much smaller than $(\log k)/N$. We show that in the former case ($b \gg (\log k)/N$), the mixing time corresponds to the time needed to reach macroscopic e…
In this paper, we give a very accurate description of the way the simple exclusion process relaxes to equilibrium. Let $P_t$ denote the semi-group associated the exclusion on the circle with $2N$ sites and $N$ particles. For any initial condition $χ$, and for any $t\ge\frac{4N^2}{9π^2}\log N$, we show that the probability density $P_t(χ,\cdot)$ is given by an exponential tilt of the equilibrium measure by the main eigenfunction of the particle system. As $\frac{4N^2}{9π^2}\log N$ is smaller than the mixing time which is $\frac{N^2}{2π^2}\log N$, this allows to give a sharp description of the c…
We consider the biased card shuffling and the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP) on the segment. We obtain the asymptotic of their mixing times: our result show that these two continuous-time Markov chains display cutoff. Our analysis combines several ingredients including: a study of the hydrodynamic profile for ASEP, the use of monotonic eigenfunctions, stochastic comparisons and concentration inequalities.
This paper studies the mixing behavior of the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP) on a segment of length $N$. Our main result is that for particle densities in $(0,1),$ the total-variation cutoff window of ASEP is $N^{1/3}$ and the cutoff profile is $1-F_{\mathrm{GUE}},$ where $F_{\mathrm{GUE}}$ is the Tracy-Widom distribution function. This also gives a new proof of the cutoff itself, shown earlier by Labbé and Lacoin. Our proof combines coupling arguments, the result of Tracy-Widom about fluctuations of ASEP started from the step initial condition, and exact algebraic identities comin…
In this paper, we investigate the mixing time of the adjacent transposition shuffle for a deck of $N$ cards. We prove that around time $N^2\log N/(2π^2)$, the total variation distance to equilibrium of the deck distribution drops abruptly from $1$ to $0$, and that the separation distance has a similar behavior but with a transition occurring at time $(N^2\log N)/π^2$. This solves a conjecture formulated by David Wilson. We present also similar results for the exclusion process on a segment of length $N$ with $k$ particles.
We consider the contact process on a countable-infinite and connected graph of bounded degree. For this process started from the upper invariant measure, we prove certain uniform mixing properties under the assumption that the infection parameter is sufficiently large. In particular, we show that the projection of such a process onto a finite subset forms a process which is $ϕ$-mixing. The proof of this is based on large deviation estimates for the spread of an infection and general correlation inequalities. In the special case of the contact process on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq1$, we furthermore…
We consider the mean-field Zero-Range process in the regime where the potential function $r$ is increasing to infinity at sublinear speed, and the density of particles is bounded. We determine the mixing time of the system, and establish cutoff. We also prove that the Poincaré constant is bounded away from zero and infinity. This mean-field estimate extends to arbitrary geometries via a comparison argument. Our proof uses the path-coupling method of Bubley and Dyer and stochastic calculus.
We find the total variation mixing time of the interchange process on the dumbbell graph (two complete graphs, $K_n$ and $K_m$, connected by a single edge), and show that this sequence of chains exhibits the cutoff phenomenon precisely when the smaller size $m$ goes to infinity. The mixing time undergoes a phase transition at $m\asymp \sqrt{n}$. We also state a conjecture on when exactly cutoff holds for the interchange process on general graphs. Our proofs use coupling methods, and they also give the mixing time of the simple exclusion process of $k$ labelled particles in the complete graph $…
We consider the reversible exclusion process with reservoirs on arbitrary networks. We characterize the spectral gap, mixing time, and mixing window of the process, in terms of certain simple statistics of the underlying network. Among other consequences, we establish a non-conservative analogue of Aldous's spectral gap conjecture, and we show that cutoff occurs if and only if the product condition is satisfied. We illustrate this by providing explicit cutoffs on discrete lattices of arbitrary dimensions and boundary conditions, which substantially generalize recent one-dimensional results. We…
We consider the relaxation process and the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of natural generalizations to arbitrary dimensions of the well known one dimensional East process. These facilitated models are supposed to catch some of the main features of the complex dynamics of fragile glasses. We focus on the low temperature regime (small density $c \approx e^{-β}$ of the facilitating sites). In the literature the relaxation process for the above models has been assumed to be quasi-one dimensional and, in particular, their equilibration time has been computed using the relaxation time of the East mode…
We consider a class of kinetically constrained interacting particle systems on ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ which play a key role in several heuristic qualitative and quantitative approaches to describe the complex behavior of glassy dynamics. With rate one and independently among the vertices of ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$, to each occupation variable $η_x\in\{0,1\}$ a new value is proposed by tossing a $(1-q)$-coin. If a certain local constraint is satisfied by the current configuration the proposed move is accepted, otherwise it is rejected. For $d=1$, the constraint requires that there is a vacancy at the vertex…
The Fredrickson-Andersen one spin facilitated model belongs to the class of Kinetically Constrained Spin Models. It is a non attractive process with positive spectral gap. In this paper we give a precise result on the relaxation for this process on an interval $[1,L]$ starting from any initial configuration. A consequence of this result is that this process exhibits cutoff at time $L/(2v)$ with window $O(\sqrt{L})$ for a certain positive constant $v$. The key ingredient is the study of the evolution of the leftmost empty site in a filled infinite half-line called the front. In the process of t…
We study the time that the simple exclusion process on the complete graph needs to reach equilibrium in terms of total variation distance. For the graph with n vertices and 1<<k<n/2 particles we show that the mixing time is of order (n/2)\log \min(k, \sqrt{n}), and that around this time, for any small positive epsilon the total variation distance drops from 1-epsilon to epsilon in a time window whose width is of order n (i.e. in a much shorter time). Our proof is purely probabilistic and self-contained.
We consider the zero-range process with arbitrary bounded monotone rates on the complete graph, in the regime where the number of sites diverges while the density of particles per site converges. We determine the asymptotics of the mixing time from any initial configuration, and establish the cutoff phenomenon. The intuitive picture is that the system separates into a slowly evolving solid phase and a quickly relaxing liquid phase: as time passes, the solid phase dissolves into the liquid phase, and the mixing time is essentially the time at which the system becomes completely liquid. Our proo…
The location and width of the time window in which a sequence of processes converges to equilibrum are given under conditions of exponential convergence. The location depends on the side: the left-window and right window cutoffs may have different locations. Bounds on the distance to equilibrium are given for both sides. Examples prove that the bounds are tight.
We consider the Symmetric Simple Exclusion Process (SSEP) on the segment with two reservoirs of densities $p, q \in (0,1)$ at the two endpoints. We show that the system exhibits cutoff with a diffusive window, thus confirming a conjecture of Gantert, Nestoridi, and Schmid in \cite{Gantert2020}. In particular, our result covers the regime $p \neq q$, where the process is not reversible and there is no known explicit formula for the invariant measure. Our proof exploits the information percolation framework introduced by Lubetzky and Sly, the negative dependence of the system, and an anticoncent…
We study the Dyson-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck diffusion process, an evolving gas of interacting particles. Its invariant law is the beta Hermite ensemble of random matrix theory, a non-product log-concave distribution. We explore the convergence to equilibrium of this process for various distances or divergences, including total variation, relative entropy, and transportation cost. When the number of particles is sent to infinity, we show that a cutoff phenomenon occurs: the distance to equilibrium vanishes abruptly at a critical time. A remarkable feature is that this critical time is independent of …
The impulses, cutting entropy functional (EF) measure on trajectories Markov diffusion process, integrate information path functional (IPF) composing discrete information Bits extracted from observing random process. Each cut brings memory of the cutting entropy, which provides both reduction of the process entropy and discrete unit of the cutting entropy a Bit. Consequently, information is memorized entropy cutting in random observations which process interactions. The origin of information associates with anatomy creation of impulse enables both cut entropy and stipulate random process gener…
We survey recent results concerning the total-variation mixing time of the simple exclusion process on the segment (symmetric and asymmetric) and a continuum analog, the simple random walk on the simplex with an emphasis on cutoff results. A Markov chain is said to exhibit cutoff if on a certain time scale, the distance to equilibrium drops abruptly from $1$ to $0$. We also review a couple of techniques used to obtain these results by exposing and commenting some elements of proof.
We analyse a random walk on the ring of integers mod $n$, which at each time point can make an additive `step' or a multiplicative `jump'. When the probability of making a jump tends to zero as an appropriate power of $n$ we prove the existence of a total variation pre-cutoff for this walk. In addition, we show that the process obtained by subsampling our walk at jump times exhibits a true cutoff, with mixing time dependent on whether the step distribution has zero mean.
We study the mixing time of the unit-rate zero-range process on the complete graph, in the regime where the number $n$ of sites tends to infinity while the density of particles per site stabilizes to some limit $ρ>0$. We prove that the worst-case total-variation distance to equilibrium drops abruptly from $1$ to $0$ at time $n\left(ρ+\frac{1}{2}ρ^2\right)$. More generally, we determine the mixing time from an arbitrary initial configuration. The answer turns out to depend on the largest initial heights in a remarkably explicit way. The intuitive picture is that the system separates into a slow…
We study the mixing time of the $(n,k)$ Bernoulli--Laplace urn model, where $k\in\{0,1,\ldots,n\}$. Consider two urns, each containing $n$ balls, so that when combined they have precisely $n$ red balls and $n$ white balls. At each step of the process choose uniformly at random $k$ balls from the left urn and $k$ balls from the right urn and switch them simultaneously. We show that if $k=o(n)$, this Markov chain exhibits mixing time cutoff at $\frac{n}{4k}\log n$ and window of the order $\frac{n}{k}\log\log n$. This is an extension of a classical theorem of Diaconis and Shahshahani who treated …
