Using a hybrid kinetic magnetohydrodynamic formalism incorporating the effects of pressure anisotropy, we simulate the evolution of a turbulent collisionless plasma in six different models covering the sub/super-sonic and sub/super-Alfvénic regimes. Based on the power spectrum of the simulated magnetic field, we compute the particle diffusion coefficients for protons with kinetic energy in the $50-500$ MeV range, and compare them to those obtained within standard magnetohydrodynamics. Our results show that the differences in the statistical properties of the magnetic field, generated by pressure anisotropy and its associated kinetic instabilities, have an appreciable impact on the diffusion coefficients of energetic protons. Moreover, the values of the diffusion coefficients that we obtain within each of the six models considered vary significantly.
When two plasmas collide, their interaction can be mediated by collisionless plasma instabilities or binary collisions between particles of each shell. By comparing the maximum growth rate of the collisionless instabilities with the collision frequency between particles of the shells, we determine the critical density separating the collisionless formation from the collisional formation of the resulting shock waves. This critical density is also the density beyond which the shock downstream is field free, as plasma instabilities do not have time to develop electromagnetic patterns. We further …
Intense laser-plasma interactions are an essential tool for the laboratory study of ion acceleration at a collisionless shock. With two-dimensional particle-in-cell calculations of a multicomponent plasma we observe two electrostatic collisionless shocks at two distinct longitudinal positions when driven with a linearly-polarized laser at normalized laser vector potential a0 that exceeds 10. Moreover, these shocks, associated with protons and carbon ions, show a power-law dependence on a0 and accelerate ions to different velocities in an expanding upstream with higher flux than in a single-com…
During magnetically dominated relativistic reconnection, inflowing plasma depletes the initial relativistic pressure at the x-line and collisionless plasma heating inside the diffusion region is insufficient to overcome this loss. The resulting pressure drop causes a collapse at the x-line, essentially a localization mechanism of the diffusion region necessary for fast reconnection. The extension of this low-pressure region further explains the bursty nature of anti-parallel reconnection because a once opened outflow exhaust can also collapse, which repeatedly triggers secondary tearing island…
Here we present a commentary on the role of small-scale (e.g., few tens of meters) wave-particle interactions in large-scale (e.g., few tens of kilometers) processes and their capacity to accelerate particles from thermal to suprathermal or even to cosmic-ray energies. The purpose of this commentary is to provoke thought and further investigation into the relative importance of electromagnetic waves in the global dynamics of many macroscopic systems. We specifically focus on the terrestrial radiation belts and collisionless shock waves as examples.
In collisional fluids, a number of key processes rely on the frequency of binary collisions. Collisions seem necessary to generate a shock wave when two fluids collide fast enough, to fulfill the Rankine-Hugoniot relations, to establish an equation of state or a Maxwellian distribution. Yet, these seemingly collisional features are routinely either observed or assumed, in relation with collision\emph{less} astrophysical plasmas. This article will review our current answers to the following questions: How do colliding collisionless plasmas end-up generating a shock as if they were fluids? To wh…
A model of global magnetic reconnection rate in relativistic collisionless plasmas is developed and validated by the fully kinetic simulation. Through considering the force balance at the upstream and downstream of the diffusion region, we show that the global rate is bounded by a value $\sim 0.3$ even when the local rate goes up to $\sim O(1)$ and the local inflow speed approaches the speed of light in strongly magnetized plasmas. The derived model is general and can be applied to magnetic reconnection under widely different circumstances.
The results of hybrid simulation of low-beta supercritical quasi-parallel shocks in high metallicity plasma are presented. The structure of upstream and downstream turbulence is addressed and velocities of the corresponding scattering centers are derived. It is shown that independently of their chemical composition the shocks experience self-reformation process. However, the period of self-reformation as well as the wave spectrum is greatly affected by the presence of substantial admixture of weakly charged heavy ions. Also the downstream magnetic field amplification is stronger for the high m…
Perpendicular collisionless shocks propagating into partially ionized plasmas are investigated by two-dimensional hybrid particle simulations. It is shown that some neutral particles leak into the upstream region from the downstream region, the leaking neutral particles become pickup ions in the upstream region and modify the shock structure, the pickup ions are preferentially accelerated, and plasma instabilities are excited by the pickup ions in the upstream and downstream regions.
Dissipative processes cause collisionless plasmas in many systems to develop nonthermal particle distributions with broad power-law tails. The prevalence of power-law energy distributions in space/astrophysical observations and kinetic simulations of systems with a variety of acceleration and trapping (or escape) mechanisms poses a deep mystery. We consider the possibility that such distributions can be modeled from maximum-entropy principles, when accounting for generalizations beyond the Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy. Using a dimensional representation of entropy (related to the Renyi and Tsallis …
The properties of collisionless shocks are frequently assessed in the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model. Yet, in a collisionless plasma, an ambient magnetic field can sustain a stable anisotropy in the upstream or the downstream, resulting in a departure from the MHD predicted behavior. We present a model allowing to derive the downstream anisotropy, hence the shock density jump, in terms of the upstream quantities. For simplicity, the case of a parallel shock in pair plasma is considered. Contrary to previous works where the upstream was assumed isotropic, here the upstream anisotropy $A=T_\pe…
Recent studies about collisionless shocks in partially ionized plasmas showed that some of neutral particles leak into the shock upstream region from the downstream region. In this paper, we perform a linear analysis and show that acoustic waves are unstable in the neutral precursor region. The acoustic instability amplifies fluctuations of magnetic field and density in the upstream region. The fluctuations are indispensable for the diffusive shock acceleration and could be important for the downstream turbulence.
Collisionless shocks follow the Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions to a good approximation. However, for a shock propagating parallel to a magnetic field, magnetohydrodynamics states that the shock properties are independent of the field strength, whereas recent Particle-in-Cell simulations reveal a significant departure from magnetohydrodynamics behavior for such shocks in the collisionless regime. This departure is found to be caused by a field-driven anisotropy in the downstream pressure, but the functional dependence of this anisotropy on the field strength is yet to be determined. Here, we …
We present a particle-in-cell simulation of the generation of a collisionless turbulent shock in a dense plasma driven by an ultra-high-intensity laser pulse. From the linear analysis, we highlight the crucial role of the laser-heated and return-current electrons in triggering a strong Weibel-like instability, giving rise to a magnetic turbulence able to isotropize the target ions.
In this paper, we study shock structures of collisionless shocks in partially ionized plasmas by means of two-dimensional hybrid simulations, where the shock is a perpendicular shock with shock velocity Vsh ~ 40 Va ~ 1333 km/s and the upstream ionization fraction is 0.5. We find that large density fluctuations and large magnetic fields fluctuations are generated both in the upstream and downstream regions. In addition, we find that the velocity distribution of downstream hydrogen atoms has three components. Observed shock structures suggest that diffusive shock acceleration can operate at perp…
Collisionless plasmas exhibit nonthermal particle distributions after being energized; as a consequence, they enter a state of low Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) entropy relative to the thermal state. The Vlasov equations predict that in a collisionless plasma with closed boundaries, BG entropy is formally conserved, along with an infinite set of Casimir invariants; this provides a seemingly strong constraint that may explain how plasmas maintain low entropy. Nevertheless, it is commonly believed that entropy production is enabled by phase mixing or nonlinear entropy cascades. The question of whether su…
In a magnetized, collisionless plasma, the magnetic moment of the constituent particles is an adiabatic invariant. An increase in the magnetic-field strength in such a plasma thus leads to an increase in the thermal pressure perpendicular to the field lines. Above a $β$-dependent threshold (where $β$ is the ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure), this pressure anisotropy drives the mirror instability, producing strong distortions in the field lines on ion-Larmor scales. The impact of this instability on magnetic reconnection is investigated using a simple analytical model for the formation of …
Using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we characterize the energy spectra of particles accelerated by relativistic magnetic reconnection (without guide field) in collisionless electron-positron plasmas, for a wide range of upstream magnetizations $σ$ and system sizes $L$. The particle spectra are well-represented by a power law $γ^{-α}$, with a combination of exponential and super-exponential high-energy cutoffs, proportional to $σ$ and $L$, respectively. For large $L$ and $σ$, the power-law index $α$ approaches about 1.2.
The thin-shell instability has been named as one process, which can generate entangled structures in astrophysical plasma on collisional (fluid) scales. It is driven by a spatially varying imbalance between the ram pressure of the inflowing upstream plasma and the downstream's thermal pressure at a non-planar shock. Here we show by means of a particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation that an analogue process can destabilize a thin shell formed by two interpenetrating, unmagnetized and collisionless plasma clouds. The amplitude of the shell's spatial modulation grows and saturates after about ten inver…
Using 2.5-dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations, we study the kinetic physics of relativistic shear flow boundary in collisionless electron-positron (e+e-) plasmas. We find efficient magnetic field generation and particle energization at the shear boundary, driven by streaming instabilities across the shear interface and sustained by the shear flow. Nonthermal, anisotropic high-energy particles are accelerated across field lines to produce a power-law tail, truncated at energies below the shear Lorentz factor. These results have important implications for the dissipation and radiation of je…
In the absence of frequent binary collisions to isotropize the plasma, the fulfillment of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions by collisionless shocks is not trivial. In particular, the presence of an external magnetic field can allow for stable anisotropies, implying some departures from the isotropic MHD jumps. The functional dependence of such anisotropies in terms of the field is yet to be determined. By hypothesizing a kinetic history of the plasma through the shock front, we recently devised a theory of the downstream anisotropy, hence of the density jump, in te…
We discuss the mechanism of electron energization in the upstream region of relativistic e/i shock. By using particle-in-cell simulations, we demonstrate the electrons interacting with enhanced electric and magnetic fields of the magnetic vortices (MVs) can gain a significant amount of energy during interaction. MVs are self generated in the upstream region of relativistic electron-ion shock.
Astrophysical plasmas in accretion discs are usually treated in the framework of fluid or MHD approaches but there are some situations where these treatments become inadequate and one needs to revert to the more fundamental underlying kinetic theory. This occurs when the plasma becomes effectively collisionless or weakly-collisional such as, for example, in radiatively inefficient accretion flows onto black holes. In this paper, we lay down the basics of kinetic theory in these contexts. In particular, we formulate the kinetic theory for quasi-stationary collisionless accretion disc plasmas in…
We describe numerical simulations, using the particle-in-cell (PIC) and hybrid-PIC code Lsp [T. P. Hughes et al., Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams 2, 110401 (1999)], of the head-on merging of two laboratory supersonic plasma jets. The goals of these experiments are to form and study astrophysically relevant collisionless shocks in the laboratory. Using the plasma jet initial conditions (density ~ 10^14-10^16 cm^(-3), temperature ~ few eV, and propagation speed ~ 20-100 km/s), large-scale simulations of jet propagation demonstrate that interactions between the two jets are essentially collisionless a…
Using analytical theory and hybrid-kinetic numerical simulations, we demonstrate that, in a collisionless plasma, long-wavelength ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) with amplitudes $δn/n_0 \gtrsim 2/β$ (where $β\gg{1}$ is the ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure) generate sufficient pressure anisotropy to destabilize the plasma to firehose and mirror instabilities. These kinetic instabilities grow rapidly to reduce the pressure anisotropy by pitch-angle scattering and trapping particles, respectively, thereby impeding the maintenance of Landau resonances that enable such waves' otherwise potent collis…
Hybrid-kinetic numerical simulations of firehose and mirror instabilities in a collisionless plasma are performed in which pressure anisotropy is driven as the magnetic field is changed by a persistent linear shear $S$. For a decreasing field, it is found that mostly oblique firehose fluctuations grow at ion Larmor scales and saturate with energies $\sim$$S^{1/2}$; the pressure anisotropy is pinned at the stability threshold by particle scattering off microscale fluctuations. In contrast, nonlinear mirror fluctuations are large compared to the ion Larmor scale and grow secularly in time; margi…
Shockwaves in plasma are usually dealt with using Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Yet, MHD entails the assumption of a short mean free path, which is not fulfilled in a collisionless plasma. Recently, for pair plasmas, we devised a model allowing to account for kinetic effects within an MHD-like formalism. Its relies on an estimate of the anisotropy generated when crossing the front, with a subsequent assessment of the stability of this anisotropy in the downstream. We solved our model for parallel, perpendicular and switch-on shocks. Here we bridge between all these cases by treating the problem …
Laser-driven collisonless electrostatic shock formation and the subsequent ion acceleration have been studied in near critical density plasmas. Particle-in-cell simulations show that both the speed of laser-driven collisionless electrostatic shock and the energies of shock-accelerated ions can be greatly enhanced due to fast laser propagation in near critical density plasmas. However, a response time longer than tens of laser wave cycles is required before the shock formation in a near critical density plasma, in contrast to the quick shock formation in a highly overdense target. More importan…
The physical mechanism responsible for driving accretion flows in astrophysical accretion disks is commonly thought to be related to the development of plasma instabilities and turbulence. A key question is therefore the determination of consistent equilibrium configurations for accretion-disk plasmas and investigation of their stability properties. In the case of collisionless plasmas kinetic theory provides the appropriate theoretical framework. This paper presents a kinetic description of low-frequency and long-wavelength axisymmetric electromagnetic perturbations in non-relativistic, stron…
The electron beam Weibel instability in the electrostatic collisionless shock is studied via particle in cell simulation. When the non-relativistic incoming plasmas collide with cold dilute plasmas, an electrostatic shock forms near the interface. Following that, a filamentary out-of-plane magnetic field is formed as a result of the Weibel instability. It is demonstrated that the anisotropy of incoming hot electrons is insufficient to trigger the Weibel instability. And the Weibel instability is excited by cold electrons in dilute plasmas. After being accelerated to relativistic velocities by …
Ion temperature anisotropy is a common feature for (quasi-)perpendicular collisionless shocks. By using two-dimensional full particle simulations, it is shown, that the ion temperature component perpendicular to the shock magnetic field at the shock foot region is proportional to the square of the Alfven Mach number divided by the plasma beta. This result is also explained by a simple analytical argument, in which the reflected ions get energy from upstream plasma flow. By comparing our analytic and numerical results, it is also confirmed that the fraction of the reflected ions hardly depends …
Plasmas whose Coulomb-collision rates are very small may relax on shorter time scales to non-Maxwellian quasi-equilibria, which, nevertheless, have a universal form, with dependence on initial conditions retained only via an infinite set of Casimir invariants enforcing phase-volume conservation. These are distributions derived by Lynden-Bell (1967) via a statistical-mechanical entropy-maximisation procedure, assuming perfect mixing of phase-space elements. To show that these equilibria are reached dynamically, one must derive an effective `collisionless collision integral' for which they are f…
Collisionless shocks in plasmas play an important role in space physics (Earth's bow shock) and astrophysics (supernova remnants, relativistic jets, gamma-ray bursts, high energy cosmic rays). While the formation of a fluid shock through the steepening of a large amplitude sound wave has been understood for long, there is currently no detailed picture of the mechanism responsible for the formation of a collisionless shock. We unravel the physical mechanism at work and show that an electromagnetic Weibel shock always forms when two relativistic collisionless, initially unmagnetized, plasma shel…
We study with a one-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation the expansion of a pair cloud into a magnetized electron-proton plasma as well as the formation and subsequent propagation of a tangential discontinuity that separates both plasmas. Its propagation speed takes the value that balances the magnetic pressure of the discontinuity against the thermal pressure of the pair cloud and the ram pressure of the protons. Protons are accelerated by the discontinuity to a speed that exceeds the fast magnetosonic speed by the factor 10. A supercritical fast magnetosonic shock forms at the front…

Using fully kinetic simulations, we study the scaling of the inflow speed of collisionless magnetic reconnection from the non-relativistic to ultra-relativistic limit. In the anti-parallel configuration, the inflow speed increases with the upstream magnetization parameter $σ$ and approaches the light speed when $σ> O(100)$, leading to an enhanced reconnection rate. In all regimes, the divergence of pressure tensor is the dominant term responsible for breaking the frozen-in condition at the x-line. The observed scaling agrees well with a simple model that accounts for the Lorentz contraction of…
We study in a fully kinetic framework the generation of seed magnetic fields through the Weibel instability driven in an initially unmagnetized plasma by a large-scale shear force. We develop an analytical model that describes the development of thermal pressure anisotropy via phase mixing, the ensuing exponential growth of magnetic fields in the linear Weibel stage, and its saturation when the seed magnetic fields become strong enough to instigate gyromotion of particles and thereby inhibit their free-streaming. The predicted scaling dependencies of the saturated seed fields on key parameters…
In this review we discuss some observational aspects and theoretical models of astrophysical collisionless shocks in partly ionized plasma with the presence of non-thermal components. A specific feature of fast strong collisionless shocks is their ability to accelerate energetic particles that can modify the shock upstream flow and form the shock precursors. We discuss the effects of energetic particle acceleration and associated magnetic field amplification and decay in the extended shock precursors on the line and continuum multi-wavelength emission spectra of the shocks. Both Balmer-type an…
A preliminary numerical experiment is conducted for laboratory experiments on the generation of magnetized collisionless shocks with high-power lasers by using one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The present study deals with the interaction between a moving Aluminum plasma and a Nitrogen plasma at rest. In the numerical experiment, the Nitrogen plasma is unmagnetized or magnetized by a weak external magnetic field. Since the previous study suggested the generation of spontaneous magnetic field in the piston (Aluminum) plasma due to the Biermann battery, the effect of the magnetic fiel…
We present a new experimental method to generate quasi-perpendicular supercritical magnetized collisionless shocks. In our experiment, ambient nitrogen (N) plasma is at rest and well-magnetized, and it has uniform mass density. The plasma is pushed by laser-driven ablation aluminum (Al) plasma. Streaked optical pyrometry and spatially resolved laser collective Thomson scattering clarify structures of plasma density and temperatures, which are compared with one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. It is indicated that just after the laser irradiation, the Al plasma is magnetized by a self-…
We develop a comprehensive theoretical model of relativistic collisionless pair shocks mediated by the current filamentation instability. We notably characterize the noninertial frame in which this instability is of a mostly magnetic nature, and describe at a microscopic level the deceleration and heating of the incoming background plasma through its collisionless interaction with the electromagnetic turbulence. Our model compares well to large-scale 2D3V PIC simulations, and provides an important touchstone for the phenomenology of such plasma systems.
In weakly collisional astrophysical plasmas, such as the intracluster medium of galaxy clusters, the amplification of cosmic magnetic fields by chaotic fluid motions is hampered by the adiabatic production of magnetic-field-aligned pressure anisotropy. This anisotropy drives a viscous stress parallel to the field that inhibits the plasma's ability to stretch magnetic-field lines. I demonstrate through the use of kinetic simulations that in high-$β$ plasmas, kinetic ion-Larmor scale instabilities sever the adiabatic link between the thermal and magnetic pressures, reducing this viscous stress a…
Electrostatic two-stream instabilities play essential roles in an electrostatic collisionless shock formation. They are a key dissipation mechanism and result in ion heating and acceleration. Since the number and energy of the shock-accelerated ions depend on the instabilities, precise identification of the active instabilities is important. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations in a multicomponent plasma reveal ion reflection and acceleration at the shock front, excitation of a longitudinally propagating electrostatic instability due to a non-oscillating component of the electrostatic …
A second-order accurate divergence-conserving hybrid particle-in-cell code Maximus has been developed for microscopic modeling of collisionless plasmas. The main specifics of the code include a constrained transport algorithm for exact conservation of magnetic field divergence, a Boris-type particle pusher, a weighted particle momentum deposit on the cells of the 3D spatial grid, an ability to model multispecies plasmas and an adaptive time step. The code is efficiently parallelized for running on supercomputers by means of the message passing interface (MPI) technology; an analysis of paralle…
