We examine the dynamics of a vortex dipole in the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of trapped dilute atomic gases at zero temperature in the presence of a Gaussian barrier potential. The density-anisotropy induced by the barrier enhances the acoustic radiation from the vortex dipole. This is due to the deviation of the condensate density from the equipotential curves and variation in the curvature of the vortex dipole trajectory. Due to the acoustic radiation, the vortex dipole dissipates energy and spirals towards the edge of the condensate. As a result, we observe an increase in the vortex-antivortex annihilation events. To examine the effect of the Gaussian barrier, we estimate the correction to the Thomas-Fermi condensate density using perturbation expansion method and the results are in very good agreement with the numerical results.
Vortex shedding from an obstacle potential moving in a Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated. Long-lived alternately aligned vortex pairs are found to form in the wake, as for the von Kármán vortex street in classical viscous fluids. Various patterns of vortex shedding are systematically studied and the drag force on the obstacle is calculated. It is shown that the phenomenon can be observed in a trapped system.
The dynamics of a vortex dipole in a quasi-two dimensional two-component Bose-Einstein condensate are investigated. A vortex dipole is shown to penetrate the interface between the two components when the incident velocity is sufficiently large. A vortex dipole can also disappear or disintegrate at the interface depending on its velocity and the interaction parameters.
We propose methods to generate and manipulate vortex dipoles in a Bose-Einstein condensate using Gaussian beams of red or blue-detuned laser. Velocity-controlled vortex dipoles are shown to be created and launched by a red-detuned beam and by two blue-detuned beams. Critical velocities for the vortex nucleation are investigated. The launched vortex dipoles can be trapped, curved, accelerated, and decelerated using Gaussian beams. Collisions between vortex dipoles are demonstrated.
We measure the in-plane distribution of thermally activated vortices in a trapped quasi-2D Bose gas, where we enhance the visibility of density-depleted vortex cores by radially compressing the sample before releasing the trap. The pairing of vortices is revealed by the two-vortex spatial correlation function obtained from the vortex distribution. The vortex density decreases gradually as temperature is lowered, and below a certain temperature, a vortex-free region emerges in the center of the sample. This shows the crossover from a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase containing vortex-pair …
In a shaken Bose-Einstein condensate, confined in a vibrating trap, there can appear different nonlinear coherent modes. Here we concentrate on two types of such coherent modes, vortex ring solitons and vortex rings. In a cylindrical trap, vortex ring solitons can be characterized as nonlinear Hermite-Laguerre modes, whose description can be done by means of optimized perturbation theory. The energy, required for creating vortex ring solitons, is larger than that needed for forming vortex rings. This is why, at a moderate excitation energy, vortex rings appear before vortex ring solitons. The …
Three coaxial quantized vortex rings in a Bose-Einstein condensate exhibit aperiodic leapfrogging dynamics. It is found that such circular vortex rings are dynamically unstable against deformation breaking axial rotational symmetry. The dynamics of the system are analyzed using the Gross-Pitaevskii and vortex-filament models. The dependence of the instability on the initial arrangement of the vortex rings is investigated. The system is found to be significantly unstable for a specific configuration of the three vortex rings.
Dynamics of a vortex dipole in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate in which magnetic phases are spatially distributed is investigated. When a vortex dipole travels from the ferromagnetic phase to the polar phase, or vice versa, it penetrates the phase boundary and transforms into one of the various spin vortex dipoles, such as a leapfrogging ferromagnetic-core vortex dipole and a half-quantum vortex dipole. Topological connections of spin wave functions across the phase boundary are discussed.
We consider analytically the dynamics of an arbitrary number and configuration of vortices in an annular Bose-Einstein condensate obtaining expressions for the free energy and vortex precession rates to logarithmic accuracy. We also obtain lower bounds for the lifetime of a single vortex in the annulus. Our results enable a closed-form analytic treatment of vortex-vortex interactions in the annulus that is exact in the incompressible limit. The incompressible hydrodynamics that is developed here paves the way for more general analytical treatments of vortex dynamics in non-simply connected geo…
The generation of isotropic vortex configurations in trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates offers a platform to elucidate quantum turbulence on mesoscopic scales. We demonstrate that a laser-induced obstacle moving in a figure-eight path within the condensate provides a simple and effective means to generate an isotropic three-dimensional vortex tangle due to its minimal net transfer of angular momentum to the condensate. Our characterisation of vortex structures and their isotropy is based on projected vortex lengths and velocity statistics obtained numerically via the Gross-Pitaevskii equ…
We study the motion of a vortex under the influence of a harmonic force in an approximately two dimensional trapped Bose-condensed gas. The Hall-Vinen-Iordanskii equations, modified to include a fluctuational force and an inertial mass term, are solved for the vortex motion. The mass of the vortex has a strong influence on the time it takes the vortex to escape the trap. Since the vortex mass also depends on the trap size we have an additional dependence on the trap size in the escape time which we compare to the massless case.
We investigate the ground-state and magnetic properties of a dipolar spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a symmetric double-well potential. In particular, we focus on the spin-vortex states by assuming that each potential well is highly pancake shaped. We show that the presence of the double-well potential gives rise to two different spin configurations for the spin-vortex pair states. We also study the response of the coupled spin-vortex pair to static transverse magnetic fields.
Static and dynamic properties of vortices in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with Rashba spin-orbit coupling are investigated. The mass current around a vortex core in the plane-wave phase is found to be deformed by the spin-orbit coupling, and this makes the dynamics of the vortex pairs quite different from those in a scalar Bose-Einstein condensate. The velocity of a vortex-antivortex pair is much smaller than that without spin-orbit coupling, and there exist stationary states. Two vortices with the same circulation move away from each other or unite to form a stationary state.
We study the dynamics of vortex nucleation and lattice formation in a Bose--Einstein condensate in a rotating square optical lattice by numerical simulations of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation. Different dynamical regimes of vortex nucleation are found, depending on the depth and period of the optical lattice. We make an extensive comparison with the experiments by Williams {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 104}, 050404 (2010)], especially focusing on the issues of the critical rotation frequency for the first vortex nucleation and the vortex number as a function of rotation frequency.
We consider the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) model of a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) to study a single vortex line in the presence of non-local repulsive s-wave scattering. We show that in addition to the vortex solution with core width of the order of the healing length, there exists a vortex solution whose width is a microscopic length scale of the order of s-wave scattering length and is independent of the healing length. We compare the two classes of vortex solution and show the region where one can possibly observe the vortex whose width is of the order of scattering length.
We report Dirac monopoles with polar-core vortex induced by spin-orbit coupling in ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates, which are attached to two nodal vortex lines along the vertical axis. These monopoles are more stable in the time scale of experiment and can be detected through directly imaging vortex lines. When the strength of spin-orbit coupling increases, Dirac monopoles with vortex can be transformed into those with square lattice. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling, increasing the strength of interaction can induce a cyclic phase transition from Dirac monopoles with polar-core…
We consider the mean-field vortex solutions and their stability within a two-component Bose Einstein condensate in the immiscible limit. A variational approach is employed to study a system consisting of a majority component which contains a single quantised vortex and a minority component which fills the vortex core. We show that a super-Gaussian function is a good approximation to the two-component vortex solution for a range of atom numbers of the in-filling component, by comparing the variational solutions to the full numerical solutions of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. We subseq…
We investigate spatiotemporal vortex rings with phase dislocation both in space and time. It is demonstrated that these structures naturally appear as a periodical in time edge phase dislocation at the low-density region of a perturbed atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The condition of formation, dynamics and stability of the spatiotemporal vortex rings are investigated for repulsive and attractive interatomic interactions. These theoretical findings open up a perspective for experimental observation of novel type of topological coherent structures in ultracold gases.
I point out how coherence vortices, i.e., topological defects in a correlation function, could help explore new physics if they are created in matter waves. Vortex dynamics could be studied in up to six dimensions, and spin topological defects unseen in lower dimensions could be created. A rudimentary proof-of-principle experiment is sketched and simulated, in which three Bose-Einstein condensates are used to create and detect coherence vortices.
The annihilation of vortex-antivortex pairs is a key event in two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). It is known that dissipation or a catalyst vortex is required for the annihilation of the pairs in one-component BECs. We numerically confirmed in two-component BECs that the pairs can be annihilated even without any dissipation or catalyst vortices when the intercomponent interaction is strong. In addition, the pair is recreated alternately in two components under certain conditions, which we call the recurrence.
We investigate vortex shedding from a moving penetrable obstacle in a highly oblate Bose-Einstein condensate. The penetrable obstacle is formed by a repulsive Gaussian laser beam that has the potential barrier height lower than the chemical potential of the condensate. The moving obstacle periodically generates vortex dipoles and the vortex shedding frequency $f_v$ linearly increases with the obstacle velocity $v$ as $f_v=a(v-v_c)$, where $v_c$ is a critical velocity. Based on periodic shedding behavior, we demonstrate deterministic generation of a single vortex dipole by applying a short line…
We report on the creation of three-vortex clusters in a $^{87}Rb$ Bose-Einstein condensate by oscillatory excitation of the condensate. This procedure can create vortices of both circulation, so that we are able to create several types of vortex clusters using the same mechanism. The three-vortex configurations are dominated by two types, namely, an equilateral-triangle arrangement and a linear arrangement. We interpret these most stable configurations respectively as three vortices with the same circulation, and as a vortex-antivortex-vortex cluster. The linear configurations are very likely …
We consider a rapidly rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with short-range s-wave interactions as well as dipolar coupling. We calculate the phase diagram of vortex lattice structures as a function of the intercomponent s-wave interaction and the strength of the dipolar interaction. We find that the long-range interactions cause new vortex lattice structures to be stable and lead to a richer phase diagram. Our results reduce to the previously found lattice structures for short-range interactions and single-component dipolar gases in the corresponding limits.
Generating a spin vortex in a $^{87}$Rb dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a controllable way is still experimentally challenging. We propose an experimentally easy and tunable way to produce spin vortex by varying the potential barrier height and the width of an additionally applied optical plug. A topological phase transition occurs from the trivial single mode approximation phase to the optical-plug-assisted-vortex one, as the barrier height increases and the width lies in an appropriate range. The optical plug causes radial density variation thus the spin vortex is favored by signi…
We use classical field simulations of the homogeneous Bose gas to study the breakdown of superflow due to vortex nucleation past a cylindrical obstacle at finite temperature. Thermal fluctuations modify the vortex nucleation from the obstacle, turning anti-parallel vortex lines (which would be nucleated at zero temperature) into wiggly lines, vortex rings and even vortex tangles. We find that the critical velocity for vortex nucleation decreases with increasing temperature, and scales with the speed of sound of the condensate, becoming zero at the critical temperature for condensation.
We found an analytical solution for the vortex structure in a rapidly rotating trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in the lowest Landau level approximation. This solution is exact in the limit of a large number of vortices and is obtained for the case of anisotropic harmonic potential. For the case of symmetric harmonic trap when the rotation frequency is equal to the trapping frequency, the solution coincides with the Abrikosov triangle vortex lattice in type-II superconductors. In a general case the coarse grained density is found to be close to the Thomas-Fermi profile, except the vicinity of …
We investigate the effects of vortex interaction on the formation of interference patterns in a coherent pair of two-dimensional Bose condensed clouds of ultra-cold atoms traveling in opposite directions subject to a harmonic trapping potential. We identify linear and nonlinear regimes in the dipole oscillations of the condensates according to the balance of internal and centre-of-mass energies of the clouds. Simulations of the collision of two clouds each containing a vortex with different winding number (charge) were carried out in these regimes in order to investigate the creation of varyin…
Recently, Freilich et al. [Science 329, 1182 (2010)] experimentally discovered stationary states of vortex dipoles, pairs of vortices of opposite circulation, in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates. To explain their observations, we perform simulations based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and obtain excellent quantitative agreement on the size of the stationary dipole. We also investigate how their imaging method, in which atoms are repeatedly extracted from a single condensate, affects the vortex dynamics. We find that it mainly induces isotropic size oscillations of the condensate without oth…
We report experimental observations and numerical simulations of the formation, dynamics, and lifetimes of single and multiply charged quantized vortex dipoles in highly oblate dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We nucleate pairs of vortices of opposite charge (vortex dipoles) by forcing superfluid flow around a repulsive gaussian obstacle within the BEC. By controlling the flow velocity we determine the critical velocity for the nucleation of a single vortex dipole, with excellent agreement between experimental and numerical results. We present measurements of vortex dipole dynamics…
We consider a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate in a square optical lattice in the regime in which the Hamiltonian of the system can be mapped onto a Josephson junction array. In an approximate scheme where the couplings are assumed uniform, the ground state energy is formulated in terms of the vortex configuration. The results are compared with experimental results and also previously reported results for frustrated XY model. We also show that vortex configuration is robust with respect to change of couplings and therefore the results remain valid when we consider more realistic model with no…
We numerically study the vortex-vortex interaction in multi-component homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates within the realm of the Gross-Pitaevskii theory. We provide strong evidences that pairwise vortex interaction captures the underlying mechanisms which determine the geometric configuration of the vortices, such as different lattices in many-vortex states, as well as the bound vortex states with two (dimer) or three (trimer) vortices. Specifically, we discuss and apply our theoretical approach to investigate intra- and inter-component vortex-vortex interactions in two- and three-component…
We study vortex polygons and their stabilities in miscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, and find that vortex polygons are stable for the total circulation $Q \leq 5$, metastable for $Q = 6$, and unstable for $Q \geq 7$. As a related model in high-energy physics, we also study the vortex polygon of the baby-Skyrme model with an anti-ferromagnetic potential term, and compare both results.
We have calculated the low-lying elementary excitations of three-dimensional few-vortex arrays in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. The number of different Kelvin-Tkachenko vortex wave branches matches the number of vortices in the condensate. The lowest odd-parity modes exhibit superfluid gyroscopic vortex motion. Experimentally, these modes could be excited and observed individually or in connection with the formation and decay of quantum turbulence.
We use entanglement to investigate the transition from vortex liquid phase to vortex lattice phase in weakly interacting rotating Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Ground state entanglement spectrum is analyzed to distinguish these two different phases. For the torus geometry, the low-lying part of ground state entanglement spectrum, as well as the behavior of its lowest level change clearly when the transition occurs. For the sphere geometry, the disappearance of entanglement gap in the conformal limit (CL) can indicate this transition. We also show that the decrease of entanglement between par…
We study formation and stabilization of vortex rings in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. We suggest a novel approach for generating and trapping of vortex rings by 'optical tweezers'--two blue-detuned optical beams forming a toroidal void in the bulk of a magnetically or optically confined condensate cloud. We demonstrate that matter-wave vortex rings trapped within the void are energetically and dynamically stable. Our theoretical findings suggest the possibility for generation, stabilization, and nondestructive manipulation of quantized vortex rings in experimentally feasible trapping confi…
In this letter we show that the vortex lattice structure in the Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture can undergo a sequence of structure transitions when the Fermi superfluid is tuned from the BCS regime to the BEC regime. This is due to different vortex core structure of the Fermi superfluid in the BCS regime and in the BEC regime. In the former the vortex core is nearly filled, while the density at the vortex core gradually decreases until it empties out at the BEC regime. Therefore, with the density-density interaction between the Bose and the Fermi superfluids, the two sets of vortex lattices int…
We theoretically show that the topology of a non-simply-connected annular atomic Bose-Einstein condensate enforces the inner surface waves to be always excited with outer surface excitations and that the inner surface modes are associated with induced vortex dipoles unlike the surface waves of a simply-connected one with vortex monopoles. Consequently, under stirring to drive an inner surface wave, a peculiar population oscillation between the inner and outer surface is generated regardless of annulus thickness. Moreover, a new vortex nucleation process by stirring is observed that can merge t…
We study a single quantized vortex in the fermionic component of a mixture of Fermi superfluid and Bose-Einstein condensate. As the density ratio between the boson and the fermion components is tuned, we identify a transition in the vortex-core structure, across which fermions in the vortex core become completely depleted even in the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime. This is accompanied by changes in key properties of the vortex state, as well as by the localization of the Bose-Einstein condensate in the vortex core. The transition in the vortex-core structure can be experimental…
We find a novel topological defect in a spin-nematic superfluid theoretically. A quantized vortex spontaneously breaks its axisymmetry, leading to an elliptic vortex in nematic-spin Bose-Einstein condensates with small positive quadratic Zeeman effect. The new vortex is considered the Joukowski transform of a conventional vortex. Its oblateness grows when the Zeeman length exceeds the spin healing length. This structure is sustained by balancing the hydrodynamic potential and the elasticity of a soliton connecting two spin spots, which are observable by in situ magnetization imaging. The theor…
We show theoretically that elongated vortex-antivortex dipoles can be created controllably in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates, using known experimental techniques. Vortex dipoles of sufficient length are unstable and cascade into slow vortex rings which ultimately decay via sound emission. This instability of antiparallel vortex line elements, which self-generates Kelvin waves on vortex loops and in trapped atomic gases, may play a role in bridging the Kelvin-wave and Kolmogorov-Richardson cascades of quantum turbulence.
We present a method for numerically building a vortex knot state in the superfluid wave-function of a Bose-Einstein condensate. We integrate in time the governing Gross-Pitaevskii equation to determine evolution and stability of the two (topologically) simplest vortex knots which can be wrapped over a torus. We find that the velocity of a vortex knot depends on the ratio of poloidal and toroidal radius: for smaller ratio, the knot travels faster. Finally, we show how unstable vortex knots break up into vortex rings.
We study rotating quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein-condensates, in which atoms are dressed to a highly excited Rydberg state. This leads to weak effective interactions that induce a transition to a mesoscopic supersolid state. Considering slow rotation, we determine its superfluidity using Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations as well as mean field calculations. For rapid rotation, the latter reveal an interesting competition between the supersolid crystal structure and the rotation-induced vortex lattice that gives rise to new phases, including arrays of mesoscopic vortex crystals.
We consider the simultaneous scattering of an angular momentum carrying Laguerre-Gaussian light beam and an acoustic wave from an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, under condition of optical superradiance induced vortex state. We derive the mean field dynamical equations of the light-superfluid system, and obtain the equations governing the elementary excitation of the system which result in a massless Klein-Gordon equation with source terms. This equation describes the propagation of the sound wave in an effective spacetime. Employing a simplifying draining bathtub model for the vortex, we inv…
Dynamics of simplest vortex knots, unknots, and links of torus type inside an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in anisotropic harmonic trap at zero temperature has been numerically simulated using three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The lifetime for such quasi-stationary rotating vortex structures has been found quite long in wide parametric domains of the system. This result is in qualitative agreement with a previous prediction based on a simplified one-dimensional model approximately describing dynamics of vortex filaments [V.P. Ruban, JETP 126, 397 (2018)].
We classify all possible fractional charge vortices of charge less than unity in spin-1 and spin-2 polar and cyclic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with zero magnetization. Statics and dynamics of these vortices in quasi-two-dimensional spinor BECs are studied employing accurate numerical solution and a Lagrange variational approximation. The results for density and collective-mode oscillation are illustrated using fractional-charge BEC vortex of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms with realistic interaction and trapping potential parameters.
Performing a systematic Bogoliubov-de Gennes spectral analysis, we illustrate that stationary vortex lines, vortex rings and more exotic states, such as hopfions, are robust in three-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, for large parameter intervals. Importantly, we find that the hopfion can be stabilized in a simple parabolic trap, without the need for trap rotation or inhomogeneous interactions. We supplement our spectral analysis by studying the dynamics of such stationary states; we find them to be robust against significant perturbations of the initial state. In the unstable regi…
Engineering of synthetic magnetic flux in Bose-Einstein condensates [Lin et al., Nature {\bf 462}, 628 (2009)] has prospects for attaining the high vortex densities necessary to emulate the fractional quantum Hall effect. We analytically establish the hydrodynamical behaviour of a condensate in a uniform synthetic magnetic field, including its density and velocity profile. Importantly, we find that the onset of vortex nucleation observed experimentally corresponds to a dynamical instability in the hydrodynamical solutions and reveal other routes to instability and anticipated vortex nucleation…
A quantized vortex dipole is the simplest vortex molecule, comprising two counter-circulating vortex lines in a superfluid. Although vortex dipoles are endemic in two-dimensional superfluids, the precise details of their dynamics have remained largely unexplored. We present here several striking observations of vortex dipoles in dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensates, and develop a vortex-particle model that generates vortex line trajectories that are in good agreement with the experimental data. Interestingly, these diverse trajectories exhibit essentially identical quasi-periodic behavior, in …
Vortex trimer is predicted in three-component Bose-Einstein condensates with internal coherent couplings. The molecule is made by three constituent vortices which are bounded by domain walls of the relative phases. We show that the shape and the size of the molecule can be controlled by changing the internal coherent couplings.
The physics of quantized vortex excitations in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates has been extensively studied in recent years.Although simple vortex lines are relatively easy to create, control, and measure in experiments, it is a lot more difficult to do the same for vortex ring structures. Here we suggest and explore a method for generating and controlling superfluid vortex rings, vortex ring lattices, and other three dimensional vortex structures in toroidally-trapped superfluid Bose--Einstein condensates by using the artificial magnetic field produced by an optical nanofiber. The presence of …
We propose a nonlinear atom-optics experiment to create diffraction catastrophes threaded by quantized vortex skeletons in Bose-Einstein condensed matter waves. We show how atom-optical aberrations induced in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates evolve into specific caustic structures due to imperfect focusing. Vortex skeletons, whose cross-sections are staggered vortex lattices, are observed to nucleate inside the universal diffraction catastrophes. Our observations shed further light on the structure and dynamics of Bose-novae and suggest applications of matter wave diffraction catastrophes, in…
We point out that the internal spin symmetry of the order parameter manifests itself at the core of a fractional vortex in real space without spin-orbit coupling. Such symmetry breaking arises from a topological constraint and the commensurability between spin symmetries of the order parameters inside and outside the core. Our prediction can be applied to probe the cyclic order parameter in a rotating spin-2 $^{87}$Rb condensate as a non-circular vortex core in a biaxial nematic state.
Stable vortex dimers are known to exist in coherently coupled two component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We construct stable vortex trimers in three component BECs and find that the shape can be controlled by changing the internal coherent (Rabi) couplings. Stable vortex N-omers are also constructed in coherently coupled N-component BECs. We classify all possible N-omers in terms of the mathematical graph theory. Next, we study effects of the Rabi coupling in vortex lattices in two-component BECs. We find how the vortex lattices without the Rabi coupling known before are connected to the …
We classify vortex-core structures according to the topology of the order parameter space. By developing a method to characterize how the order parameter changes inside the vortex core. We apply this method to the spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates and show that the vortex-core structures are classified by winding numbers that are locally defined in the core region. We also show that a vortex-core structure with a nontrivial winding number can be stabilized under a negative quadratic Zeeman effect.
We perform a theoretical study into how dipole-dipole interactions modify the properties of superfluid vortices within the context of a two-dimensional atomic Bose gas of co-oriented dipoles. The reduced density at a vortex acts like a giant anti-dipole, changing the density profile and generating an effective dipolar potential centred at the vortex core whose most slowly decaying terms go as $1/ρ^2$ and $\ln(ρ)/ρ^3$. These effects modify the vortex-vortex interaction which, in particular, becomes anisotropic for dipoles polarized in the plane. Striking modifications to vortex-vortex dynamics …
We theoretically explore the annihilation of vortex dipoles, generated when an obstacle moves through an oblate Bose-Einstein condensate, and examine the energetics of the annihilation event. We show that the gray soliton, which results from the vortex dipole annihilation, is lower in energy than the vortex dipole. We also investigate the annihilation events numerically and observe that the annihilation occurs only when the vortex dipole overtakes the obstacle and comes closer than the coherence length. Furthermore, we find that the noise reduces the probability of annihilation events. This ma…
We study the changes in the spatial distribution of vortices in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate due to an increasing anisotropy of the trapping potential. Once the rotational symmetry is broken, we find that the vortex system undergoes a rich variety of structural changes, including the formation of zig-zag and linear configurations. These spatial re-arrangements are well signaled by the change in the behavior of the vortex-pattern eigenmodes against the anisotropy parameter. The existence of such structural changes opens up possibilities for the coherent exploitation of effective many-bod…
We investigate a small vortex-lattice system of four co-rotating vortices in an atomic Bose--Einstein condensate and find that the vortex dynamics display chaotic behaviour after a system quench introduced by reversing the direction of circulation of a single vortex through a phase-imprinting process. By tracking the vortex trajectories and Lyapunov exponent, we show the onset of chaotic dynamics is not immediate, but occurs at later times and is accelerated by the close-approach and separation of all vortices in a scattering event. The techniques we develop could potentially be applied to cre…
Stable vortex N-omers are constructed in coherently coupled N-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We classify all possible N-omers in terms of the mathematical graph theory and numerically construct all graphs for N=2,3,4. We also find that N-omers are well described as CP(N-1) skyrmions when inter-component and intra-component couplings are U(N) symmetric, and we evaluate their size dependence on the Rabi coupling.
