We consider total variation minimization for manifold valued data. We propose a cyclic proximal point algorithm and a parallel proximal point algorithm to minimize TV functionals with $\ell^p$-type data terms in the manifold case. These algorithms are based on iterative geodesic averaging which makes them easily applicable to a large class of data manifolds. As an application, we consider denoising images which take their values in a manifold. We apply our algorithms to diffusion tensor images, interferometric SAR images as well as sphere and cylinder valued images. For the class of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds (which includes the data space in diffusion tensor imaging) we show the convergence of the proposed TV minimizing algorithms to a global minimizer.

It is common to have to process signals or images whose values are cyclic and can be represented as points on the complex circle, like wrapped phases, angles, orientations, or color hues. We consider a Tikhonov-type regularization model to smoothen or interpolate circle-valued signals defined on arbitrary graphs. We propose a convex relaxation of this nonconvex problem as a semidefinite program, and an efficient algorithm to solve it.
It is common to have to process signals, whose values are points on the 3-D sphere. We consider a Tikhonov-type regularization model to smoothen or interpolate sphere-valued signals defined on arbitrary graphs. We propose a convex relaxation of this nonconvex problem as a semidefinite program, which is easy to solve numerically and is efficient in practice.
This work is concerned with linear inverse problems where a distributed parameter is known a priori to only take on values from a given discrete set. This property can be promoted in Tikhonov regularization with the aid of a suitable convex but nondifferentiable regularization term. This allows applying standard approaches to show well-posedness and convergence rates in Bregman distance. Using the specific properties of the regularization term, it can be shown that convergence (albeit without rates) actually holds pointwise. Furthermore, the resulting Tikhonov functional can be minimized effic…
Convergence rates results for variational regularization methods typically assume the regularization functional to be convex. While this assumption is natural for scalar-valued functions, it can be unnecessarily strong for vector-valued ones. In this paper we focus on regularization functionals with polyconvex integrands. Even though such functionals are nonconvex in general, it is possible to derive linear convergence rates with respect to a generalized Bregman distance, an idea introduced by Grasmair in 2010. As a case example we consider the image registration problem.

We consider the topic of multivariate regression on manifold-valued output, that is, for a multivariate observation, its output response lies on a manifold. Moreover, we propose a new regression model to deal with the presence of grossly corrupted manifold-valued responses, a bottleneck issue commonly encountered in practical scenarios. Our model first takes a correction step on the grossly corrupted responses via geodesic curves on the manifold, and then performs multivariate linear regression on the corrected data. This results in a nonconvex and nonsmooth optimization problem on manifolds. …
We show how an operation of inf-convolution can be used to approximate convex functions with $C^{1}$ smooth convex functions on Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive curvature (in a manner that not only is explicit but also preserves some other properties of the original functions, such as ordering, symmetries, infima and sets of minimizers), and we give some applications.
Adaptive regularization with cubics (ARC) is an algorithm for unconstrained, non-convex optimization. Akin to the popular trust-region method, its iterations can be thought of as approximate, safe-guarded Newton steps. For cost functions with Lipschitz continuous Hessian, ARC has optimal iteration complexity, in the sense that it produces an iterate with gradient smaller than $\varepsilon$ in $O(1/\varepsilon^{1.5})$ iterations. For the same price, it can also guarantee a Hessian with smallest eigenvalue larger than $-\varepsilon^{1/2}$. In this paper, we study a generalization of ARC to optim…
Canonical correlation analysis (CCA for short) describes the relationship between two sets of variables by finding some linear combinations of these variables that maximizing the correlation coefficient. However, in high-dimensional settings where the number of variables exceeds sample size, or in the case of that the variables are highly correlated, the traditional CCA is no longer appropriate. In this paper, an adaptive sparse version of CCA (ASCCA for short) is proposed by using the trace Lasso regularization. The proposed ASCCA reduces the instability of the estimator when the covariates a…
Full waveform inversion (FWI) is a nonlinear PDE constrained optimization problem, which seeks to estimate constitutive parameters of a medium such as phase velocity, density, and anisotropy, by fitting waveforms. Attenuation is an additional parameter that needs to be taken into account in viscous media to exploit the full potential of FWI. Attenuation is more easily implemented in the frequency domain by using complex-valued velocities in the time-harmonic wave equation. These complex velocities are frequency-dependent to guarantee causality and account for dispersion. Since estimating a com…
The ordinary differential equation $\dot{x}(t)=f(x(t)), \; t \geq 0 $, for $f$ measurable, is not sufficiently regular to guarantee existence of solutions. To remedy this we may relax the problem by replacing the function $f$ with its Filippov regularization $F_{f}$ and consider the differential inclusion $\dot{x}(t)\in F_{f}(x(t))$ which always has a solution. It is interesting to know, inversely, when a set-valued map $Φ$ can be obtained as the Filippov regularization of a (single-valued, measurable) function. In this work we give a full characterization of such set-valued maps, hereby calle…
