We consider the non-linear thermoelastic plate equation in rectangular domains $Ω$. More precisely, $Ω$ is considered to be given as the Cartesian product of whole or half spaces and a cube. First the linearized equation is treated as an abstract Cauchy problem in $L^p$-spaces. We take advantage of the structure of $Ω$ and apply operator-valued Fourier multiplier results to infer an $\mathcal R$-bounded $\mathcal H^\infty$-calculus. With the help of maximal $L^p$-regularity existence and uniqueness of local real-analytic strong solutions together with analytic dependency on the data is shown.
In this paper, we consider generalized thermoelastic plate equations with Fourier's law of heat conduction. By introducing a threshold for decay properties of regularity-loss, we investigate decay estimates of solutions with/without regularity-loss in a framework of weighted $L^1$ spaces. Furthermore, asymptotic profiles of solutions are obtained by using representations of solutions in the Fourier space, which are derived by employing WKB analysis. Next, we study generalized thermoelastic plate equations with additional structural damping, and analysis the influence of structural damping on d…
We study an initial-boundary-value problem for a quasilinear thermoelastic plate of Kirchhoff \& Love-type with parabolic heat conduction due to Fourier, mechanically simply supported and held at the reference temperature on the boundary. For this problem, we show the short-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions under appropriate regularity and compatibility assumptions on the data. Further, we use barrier techniques to prove the global existence and exponential stability of solutions under a smallness condition on the initial data. It is the first result of this kind established…
We consider the linear thermoelastic plate equations with free boundary conditions in uniform $C^4$-domains, which includes the half-space, bounded and exterior domains. We show that the corresponding operator generates an analytic semigroup in $L^p$-spaces for all $p\in(1,\infty)$ and has maximal $L^q$-$L^p$-regularity on finite time intervals. On bounded $C^4$-domains, we obtain exponential stability.
In this paper we consider a transmission problem for a system of a thermoelastic plate with (or without) rotational inertia term coupled with a membrane with different variants of damping for the plate and/or the membrane. We prove well-posedness of the problem and higher regularity of the solution and study the asymptotic behaviour of the solution, depending on the damping and on the presence of the rotational term.
We study dispersive mixed-order systems of pseudodifferential operators in the setting of $L^p$-Sobolev spaces. Under the weak condition of quasi-hyperbolicity, these operators generate a semigroup in the space of tempered distributions. However, if the basic space is a tuple of $L^p$-Sobolev spaces, a strongly continuous semigroup is in many cases only generated if $p=2$ or $n=1$. The results are applied to the linear thermoelastic plate equation inertial term and with Fourier's or Maxwell-Cattaneo's law of heat conduction.
In this paper we study Cauchy problem for thermoelastic plate equations with friction or structural damping in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq1$, where the heat conduction is modeled by Fourier's law. We explain some qualitative properties of solutions influenced by different damping mechanisms. We show which damping in the model has a dominant influence on smoothing effect, energy estimates, $L^p-L^q$ estimates not necessary on the conjugate line, and on diffusion phenomena. Moreover, we derive asymptotic profiles of solutions in a framework of weighted $L^1$ data. In particular, sharp decay estimates…
In this paper we study the interaction problem between a nonlinear thermoelastic plate and a compressible viscous fluid with the adiabatic constant $γ>12/7$. The existence of a weak solution for this problem is obtained by constructing a time-continuous operator splitting scheme that decouples the fluid and the structure. The fluid sub-problem is given on a fixed reference domain in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation, and the continuity equation is damped on this domain as well. This allows the majority of the analysis to be performed on the fixed reference domain, while the c…
We consider an initial-boundary-value problem for a thermoelastic Kirchhoff & Love plate, thermally insulated and simply supported on the boundary, incorporating rotational inertia and a quasilinear hypoelastic response, while the heat effects are modeled using the hyperbolic Maxwell-Cattaneo-Vernotte law giving rise to a 'second sound' effect. We study the local well-posedness of the resulting quasilinear mixed-order hyperbolic system in a suitable solution class of smooth functions mapping into Sobolev $H^{k}$-spaces. Exploiting the sole source of energy dissipation entering the system throu…
The present work intends to complement the study of the regularity of the solutions of the thermoelastic plate with rotacional forces. The rotational forces involve the spectral fractional Laplacian, with power parameter $τ\in [0,1]$ ( $γ(-Δ)^τu_{tt}$). Previous research regarding regularity showed that, as for the analyticity of the semigroup $S(t)=e^{\mathbb{B}t}$ for the Euler-Bernoulli Plate($τ=0$) model, the first result was established by Liu and Renardy, \cite{LiuR95} in the case of hinged and clamped boundary conditions, for the case $τ=1$ (Plate Kirchoff-Love) Lasiecka and Triggiani s…

This article is concerned with bending plate theory for thermoelastic diffusion materials under Green-Naghdi theory. First, we present the basic equations which characterize the bending of thin thermoelastic diffusion plates for type II and III models. The theory allows for the effect of transverse shear deformation without any shear correction factor, and permits the propagation of waves at a finite speed without energy dissipation for type II model and with energy dissipation for type III model. By the semigroup theory of linear operators, we prove the well-posedness of the both models and t…
In this article we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions, in sense of global pullback attractors, of the evolution system $$ \begin{cases} u_{tt} +ηΔ^2 u+a(t)Δθ=f(t,u), & t>τ,\ x\inΩ,\\ θ_t-κΔθ-a(t)Δu_t=0, & t>τ,\ x\inΩ, \end{cases} $$ subject to boundary conditions $$ u=Δu=θ=0,\ t>τ,\ x\in\partialΩ, $$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $N\geqslant 2$, which boundary $\partialΩ$ is assumed to be a $\mathcal{C}^4$-hypersurface, $η>0$ and $κ>0$ are constants, $a$ is an Hölder continuous function, $f$ is a dissipative nonlinearity locally Lipschitz in the second variable.
We introduce a new functional, named gap function, which measures the torsional instability of a partially hinged rectangular plate, aiming to model the deck of a bridge. Then we test the performances of the gap function on a plate subject to two kinds of loads: one modeled by a force concentrating on one of the free edges and one in resonance with the eigenmodes.
We consider a non-homogeneous partially hinged rectangular plate having structural engineering applications. In order to study possible remedies for torsional instability phenomena we consider the gap function as a measure of the torsional performances of the plate. We treat different configurations of load and we study which density function is optimal for our aims. The analysis is in accordance with some results obtained studying the corresponding eigenvalue problem in terms of maximization of the ratio of specific eigenvalues. Some numerical experiments complete the analysis.
We consider a thin and narrow rectangular plate where the two short edges are hinged whereas the two long edges are free. This plate aims to represent the deck of a bridge, either a footbridge or a suspension bridge. We study a nonlocal evolution equation modeling the deformation of the plate and we prove existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior for the solutions for all initial data in suitable functional spaces. Then we prove results on the stability/instability of simple modes motivated by a phenomenon which is visible in actual bridges and we complement these theorems with some numeri…
We consider a partially hinged rectangular plate and its normal modes. There are two families of modes, longitudinal and torsional. We study the variation of the corresponding eigenvalues under domain deformations. We investigate the possibility of finding a shape functional able to quantify the torsional instability of the plate, namely how prone is the plate to transform longitudinal oscillations into torsional ones. This functional should obey several rules coming from both theoretical and practical evidences. We show that a simple functional obeying all the required rules does not exist an…
The present paper treats the problem of finding the asymptotic bounds for the globally optimal locations of orthogonal stiffeners minimizing the compliance of a rectangular plate in elastostatic bending. The essence of the paper is the utilization of a method of analysis of orthogonally stiffened rectangular plates first presented by Mazurkiewicz in 1962, and obtained herein in a closed form for several special cases in the approximation of stiffeners having zero torsional rigidity. Asymptotic expansions of the expressions for the deflection field of a stiffened plate are used to derive limit-…
We use a gap function in order to compare the torsional performances of different reinforced plates under the action of external forces. Then, we address a shape optimization problem, whose target is to minimize the torsional displacements of the plate: this leads us to set up a minimaxmax problem, which includes a new kind of worst-case optimization. Two kinds of reinforcements are considered: one aims at strengthening the plate, the other aims at weakening the action of the external forces. For both of them, we study the existence of optima within suitable classes of external forces and rein…
A rectangular plate modeling the deck of a suspension bridge is considered. The plate may widely oscillate, which suggests to consider models from nonlinear elasticity. The von Kármán plate model is studied, complemented with the action of the hangers and with suitable boundary conditions describing the behavior of the deck. The oscillating modes are determined in full detail. Existence and multiplicity of static equilibria are then obtained under different assumptions on the strength of the buckling load.
The purpose of this work is to develop a model for a rectangular plate made of an orthotropic material. If compared with the classical model of the isotropic plate, the relaxed condition of orthotropy increases the degrees of freedom as a consequence of the larger number of elastic parameters, thus allowing to better describe rectangular plates having different behaviors in the two directions parallel to the edges of the rectangle. We have in mind structures like decks of bridges where the rigidity in the direction of their length does not necessarily coincide with the one in the direction of …
We consider a partially hinged rectangular plate and its normal modes. The dynamical properties of the plate are influenced by the spectrum of the associated eingenvalue problem. In order to improve the stability of the plate, it seems reasonable to place a certain amount of stiffening material in appropriate regions. If we look at the partial differential equation appearing in the model, this corresponds to insert a suitable weight coefficient inside the equation. A possible way to locate such regions is to study the eigenvalue problem associated to the aforementioned weighted equation. In th…
A thin and narrow rectangular plate having the two short edges hinged and the two long edges free is considered. A nonlinear nonlocal evolution equation describing the deformation of the plate is introduced: well-posedness and existence of periodic solutions are proved. The natural phase space is a particular second order Sobolev space that can be orthogonally split into two subspaces containing, respectively, the longitudinal and the torsional movements of the plate. Sufficient conditions for the stability of periodic solutions and of solutions having only a longitudinal component are given. …
We model the roadway of a suspension bridge as a thin rectangular plate and we study in detail its oscillating modes. The plate is assumed to be hinged on its short edges and free on its long edges. Two different kinds of oscillating modes are found: longitudinal modes and torsional modes. Then we analyze a fourth order hyperbolic equation describing the dynamics of the bridge. In order to emphasize the structural behavior we consider an isolated equation with no forcing and damping. Due to the nonlinear behavior of the cables and hangers, a structural instability appears. With a finite dimens…
The large deflections of cantilevered beams and plates are modeled and discussed. Traditional nonlinear elastic models (e.g., that of von Karman) employ elastic restoring forces based on the effect of stretching on bending, and these are less applicable to cantilevers. Recent experimental work indicates that elastic cantilevers are subject to nonlinear inertial and stiffness effects. We review a recently established (quasilinear and nonlocal) cantilevered beam model, and consider some natural extensions to two dimensions -- namely, inextensible plates. Our principal configuration is that of a …
In this article, we have considered a nonlinear nonlocal time dependent fourth order equation demonstrating the deformation of a thin and narrow rectangular plate. We propose $C^1$ conforming virtual element method (VEM) of arbitrary order, $k\ge2$, to approximate the model problem numerically. We employ VEM to discretize the space variable and fully implicit scheme for temporal variable. Well-posedness of the fully discrete scheme is proved under certain conditions on the physical parameters, and we derive optimal order of convergence in both space and time variable. Finally, numerical experi…
A partially hinged, partially free rectangular plate is considered, with the aim to address the possible unstable end behaviors of a suspension bridge subject to wind. This leads to a nonlinear plate evolution equation with a nonlocal stretching active in the span-wise direction. The wind-flow in the chord-wise direction is modeled through a piston-theoretic approximation, which provides both weak (frictional) dissipation and non-conservative forces. The long-time behavior of solutions is analyzed from various points of view. Compact global attractors, as well as fractal exponential attractors…
