The single-particle excitations of a superconductor are coherent superpositions of electrons and holes near the Fermi level, called Bogoliubov quasiparticles. They are Majorana fermions, meaning that pairs of quasiparticles can annihilate. We calculate the annihilation probability at a beam splitter for chiral quantum Hall edge states, obtaining a 1 +/- cos phi dependence on the phase difference phi of the superconductors from which the excitations originated (with the +/- sign distinguishing singlet and triplet pairing). This provides for a nonlocal measurement of the superconducting phase in the absence of any supercurrent.
We study a Majorana zero-energy state bound to a hedgehog-like point defect in a topological superconductor described by a Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG)-Dirac type effective Hamiltonian. We first give an explicit wave function of a Majorana state by solving the BdG equation directly, from which an analytical index can be obtained. Next, by calculating the corresponding topological index, we show a precise equivalence between both indices to confirm the index theorem. Finally, we apply this observation to reexamine the role of another topological invariant, i.e., the Chern number associated with t…
We suggest that the Majorana neutrino should be regarded as a Bogoliubov quasiparticle that is consistently understood only by use of a relativistic analogue of the Bogoliubov transformation. The unitary charge conjugation condition ${\cal C}ψ{\cal C}^{\dagger}=ψ$ is not maintained in the definition of a quantum Majorana fermion from a Weyl fermion. This is remedied by the Bogoliubov transformation accompanying a redefinition of the charge conjugation properties of vacuum, such that a C-noninvariant fermion number violating term (condensate) is converted to a Dirac mass. We also comment on the…
Coexistence of Chiral Majorana Edge States and Bogoliubov Fermi Surfaces in Two-Dimensional Nonsymmorphic Dirac Semimetal/Superconductor Heterostructures
In the presence of certain symmetries, three-dimensional Dirac semimetals can harbor not only surface Fermi arcs, but also surface Dirac cones. Motivated by the experimental observation of rotation-symmetry-protected Dirac semimetal states in iron-based superconductors, we investigate the potential intrinsic topological phases in a $C_{4z}$-rotational invariant superconducting Dirac semimetal with $s_{\pm}$-wave pairing. When the normal state harbors only surface Fermi arcs on the side surfaces, we find that an interesting gapped superconducting state with a quartet of Bogoliubov-Dirac cones o…
We consider a two-dimensional px+i py superconductor in the presence of multiple vortices, which support zero-energy Majorana fermion states in their cores. Intervortex tunnelings of the Majorana fermions lift the topological state degeneracy. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we calculate splitting of the zero-energy modes due to these tunneling events. We also discuss superconducting fluctuations and, in particular, their effect on the energy splitting.
Combination of proximity-induced superconductivity and ferromagnetic exchange field in a two-dimensional square-lattice antiferromagnet with spin-orbit coupling and nonsymmorphic symmetry can induce a topological superconductor phase with chiral Majorana edge states. The lattice model of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian was applied to study the phase diagram of bulks and chiral Majorana edge states in nanoribbons. By numerically studying the phase diagram, we found that the non-uniformity of either the superconducting pairing parameters or the exchange field at the two sublattices is…
We investigate a heterostructure system with a spin-orbit coupled semiconductor sandwiched by an s-wave superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator, which supports Majorana fermions (MFs) at the superconducting vortex cores. We propose a scheme of transporting and braiding the MFs, which only requires application of point-like gate voltages in a system with nano-meter patterns. By solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation numerically, we monitor the time evolutions of MF wave-functions and show that the braiding of MFs with non-Abelian statistics can be achieved by adiabatic sw…
We study the energy spectrum of a vortex core in a two-dimensional semiconductor with Rashba spin-orbit interaction and proximity-coupled to a conventional superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator. We perform self-consistent calculations using the microscopic tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes method on a lattice and confirm the existence of Majorana fermions in the non-trivial topological phase. We also find two different topologically trivial bulk superconducting phases, only differing in the type of vortex core structure they support and separated by a zero-energy excitation. Furthermor…
Using Ginzburg-Landau approach we show that the strain of the nematic superconductor can generate a specific (nematic) vorticity. In the case of doped topological insulators that vorticity forms a spin vortex. We find two types of topologically different spin vortices that either enhance (type I) or suppress (type II) superconductivity far from the vortex core. We apply Bogoliubov-de Geunnes equations to study electronic states in the nematic superconductor with spin vortices. We find that in the case of the vortex of type I, zero-energy states are localized near the vortex core. These states …
We present a study of the transmission of electrons through a semiconductor quantum wire with strong spin-orbit coupling in proximity to an s-wave superconductor, which is Coulomb-blockaded. Such a system supports Majorana zero modes in the presence of an external magnetic field. Without superconductivity, phase lapses are expected to occur in the transmission phase, and we find that they disappear when a topological superconducting phase is stabilized. We express tunneling through the nanowire with the help of effective matrix elements, which depend on both the fermion parity of the wire and …
The spectrum of excitations of the chiral superconducting ring with internal and external radii, comparable with coherence length, trapping a unit flux is calculated. We find within the Bogoliubov-deGennes approach that there exists a pair of precisely zero energy states. They are not protected by topology, but are stable under certain deformations of the system. We discuss the ways to tune the system so that it grows into such a "Majorana disk". This condition has a character of a resonance phenomenon.
We investigate one-dimensional (1D) Majorana bound states (MBSs) realized in terms of the helical edge states of a 2D quantum spin-Hall insulator (QSHI) in a heterostructure with a superconducting substrate and two ferromagnetic insulators (FIs). By means of Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach we demonstrate that there is a helical spin texture in the MBS wave function with a pitch proportional to the Fermi momentum of the helical edge states of QSHI. Moreover, simultaneous detection on local density of states by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy at a position close to one FI edge and a…
We classify discrete-rotation symmetric topological crystalline superconductors (TCS) in two dimensions and provide the criteria for a zero energy Majorana bound state (MBS) to be present at composite defects made from magnetic flux, dislocations, and disclinations. In addition to the Chern number that encodes chirality, discrete rotation symmetry further divides TCS into distinct stable topological classes according to the rotation eigenspectrum of Bogoliubov-de Gennes quasi-particles. Conical crystalline defects are shown to be able to accommodate robust MBS when a certain combination of the…
Fidelity and fidelity susceptibility are introduced to investigate the topological superconductors with end Majorana fermions. A general formalism is established to calculate the fidelity and fidelity susceptibility by solving Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. It is shown that the fidelity susceptibility manifest itself as a peak at the topological quantum phase transition point for homogeneous Kitaev wire, thus serves as a valid indicator for the topological quantum phase transition which signals the appearance of Majorana fermions. The effect of disorders is investigated within this formalism.…
Noncentrosymmetric superconductors (NCSs), characterized by antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling and a mixture of spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing components, are promising candidate materials for topological superconductivity. An important hallmark of topological superconductors is the existence of protected zero-energy states at surfaces or in vortex cores. Here we investigate Majorana vortex-bound states in three-dimensional nodal and fully gapped NCSs by combining analytical solutions of Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations in the continuum with exact diagonalization of BdG Hamiltonians.…
Motivated by a recent experiment on the superfluid 3He A-phase with a chiral p-wave pairing confined in a thin slab, we propose designing a concrete experimental setup for observing the Majorana edge modes that appear around the circumference edge region. We solve the quasi-classical Eilenberger equation, which is quantitatively reliable, to evaluate several observables. To derive the property inherent to the Majorana edge state, the full quantum mechanical Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation is solved in this setting. On the basis of the results obtained, we perform decisive experiments to check th…
By analytically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations we study the fermion bound states at the center of the core of a vortex in a two-dimensional superconductor. We consider three kinds of 2D superconducting models: (a) a standard type II superconductor in the mixed state with low density of vortex lines, (b) a superconductor with strong spin-orbit coupling locking the spin parallel to the momentum and (c) a superconductor with strong spin-orbit coupling locking the spin perpendicular to the momentum. The 2D superconducting states are induced via proximity effect between an $s$-wave supe…
We show that three dimensional superconductors, described within a Bogoliubov de Gennes framework can have zero energy bound states associated with pointlike topological defects. The Majorana fermions associated with these modes have non-Abelian exchange statistics, despite the fact that the braid group is trivial in three dimensions. This can occur because the defects are associated with an orientation that can undergo topologically nontrivial rotations. A new feature of three dimensional systems is that there are "braidless" operations in which it is possible to manipulate the groundstate as…
We explore Majorana zero modes bound to a vortex line in a three dimensional topological superconductor model, focusing our attention on the validity of the index theorem previously derived. We first solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation at the zero energy to obtain the analytical index. We next calculate the topological index given by the order parameters. It turns out that they indeed coincide and that index theorem, which has been derived on the implicit assumption that a defect is point-like, is also valid for a line defect.
Topological superconductors are predicted to exhibit outstanding phenomena, including non-abelian anyon excitations, heat-carrying edge states, and topological nodes in the Bogoliubov spectra. Nonetheless, and despite major experimental efforts, we are still lacking unambiguous signatures of such exotic phenomena. In this context, the recent discovery of coexisting superconductivity and ferroelectricity in lightly doped and ultra clean SrTiO$_3$ opens new opportunities. Indeed, a promising route to engineer topological superconductivity is the combination of strong spin-orbit coupling and inve…
The theoretical study of topological superfluids and superconductors has so far been carried out largely as a translation of the theory of noninteracting topological insulators into the superfluid language, whereby one replaces electrons by Bogoliubov quasiparticles and single-particle band Hamiltonians by Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonians. Band insulators and superfluids are, however, fundamentally different: while the former exist in the absence of inter-particle interactions, the latter are broken symmetry states that owe their very existence to such interactions. In particular, unlike the …
A vortex in a model spinless px+ipy superconductor induces two Majorana fermions (MFs), one in the core and the other at the sample edge. In the present work, we show that edge MF can be generated, fused, transported, and braided easily by tuning gate voltages at point-like constriction junctions. Solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we demonstrate that the braiding of edge MFs obeys the non-Abelian statistics. The present setup is therefore a promising implementation for topological quantum computation, and has the advantage of easy manipulation and simple device structur…
We propose a feasible way of engineering Majorana-type quasiparticles in ultracold fermionic gases on a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice. For this purpose, imbalanced ultracold atoms interacting by the spin-orbit coupling should be hybridized with a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) molecular cloud. By constraining the profile of an internal defect potential we show that the Majorana-type excitations can be created or annihilated. This process is modelled within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach. This study is relevant also to nanoscopic 1D superconductors where modification…
We investigate how the vortex-vortex separation changes Majorana zero modes in the vicinity of the BCS-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) topological phase transition of p-wave resonant Fermi gases. By analytically and numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for spinless p-wave superfluids with plural vortices, it is demonstrated that the quasiparticle tunneling between neighboring vortices gives rise to the quantum oscillation of the low-lying spectra on the scale of the Fermi wavelength in addition to the exponential splitting. This rapid oscillation, which appears in the weak co…
Exact self-consistent soliton dynamics based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formalism in unconventional Fermi superfluids/superconductors possessing an $SU(d)$-symmetric two-body interaction is presented. The derivation is based on the ansatz having the similar form as the Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko equation in the inverse scattering theory. Our solutions can be regarded as a multicomponent generalization of the solutions recently derived by Dunne and Thies [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 121602 (2013)]. We also propose superpositions of occupation states, which make it possible to realize various fi…
Topological superconductors are novel classes of quantum condensed phases, characterized by topologically nontrivial structures of Cooper pairing states. On the surfaces of samples and in vortex cores of topological superconductors, Majorana fermions, which are particles identified with their own anti-particles, appear as Bogoliubov quasiparticles. The existence and stability of Majorana fermions are ensured by bulk topological invariants constrained by the symmetries of the systems. Majorana fermions in topological superconductors obey a new type of quantum statistics referred to as non-Abeli…
Nodal line in parameter space, at which the energy gap closes up, can either be the boundary separating two topological quantum phases or two conventional phases. We study the topological feature of nodal line in parameter space via a dimerized Kitaev spin chain with staggered transverse field, which can be mapped onto the system of dimerized spinless fermions with p-wave superconductivity. The quantum phase boundaries are straight crossing degeneracy lines in 3D parameter space. We show that the nodal line acts as a vortex filament associated with a vector field, which is generated from the Z…
We develop a unified framework to classify topological defects in insulators and superconductors described by spatially modulated Bloch and Bogoliubov de Gennes Hamiltonians. We consider Hamiltonians H(k,r) that vary slowly with adiabatic parameters r surrounding the defect and belong to any of the ten symmetry classes defined by time reversal symmetry and particle-hole symmetry. The topological classes for such defects are identified, and explicit formulas for the topological invariants are presented. We introduce a generalization of the bulk-boundary correspondence that relates the topologic…
We reveal that Majorana bound states inside the vortex core in an odd-parity topological superconductivity classified as "pseudo-scalar" type in the gap function are distinctly spin-polarized by solving the massive Dirac Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation considering the spin-orbit coupling. This result is universal for "Dirac superconductivity" whose rotational degree of freedom is characterized by the total angular momentum J = S + L and in marked contrast to the spin-degeneracy of the core bound states as the consequence of the conventional BdG equation. The spin-polarized vortex core can …
We show that a chiral $f+if$-wave superconducting pairing may be induced in the lowest heavy hole band of a hole-doped semiconductor thin film through proximity contact with an \textit{s}-wave superconductor. The chirality of the pairing originates from the $3π$ Berry phase accumulated for a heavy hole moving along a close path on the Fermi surface. There exist three chiral gapless Majorana edge states, in consistence with the chiral $f+if$% -wave pairing. We show the existence of zero energy Majorana fermions in vortices in the semiconductor-superconductor heterostructure by solving the Bogol…
Majorana zero modes are predicted to exist in p+ip (either inherent or effective due to proximity effect) superfluids and are proposed to be used for constructing topological qubits for topologically protected quantum computing. Existing theories on the subject are mostly based on BCS mean-field theory which breaks particle number conservation (U(1) symmetry). More specifically, Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations are used to derive Majorana zero modes and their braiding properties. The broken particle number conservation is, on the other hand, respected in any fermionic condensed matter syst…
We study numerically Majorana fermions (MFs) induced by a charged impurity in topological superconductors. It is revealed from the relevant Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations that (i) for quasi-one dimensional systems, a pair of MFs are bounded at the two sides of one charge impurity and well separated; and (ii) for a two dimensional square lattice, the charged-impurity-induced MFs are similar to the known pair of vortex-induced MFs, in which one MF is bounded by the impurity while the other appears at the boundary. Moreover, the corresponding local density of states is explored, demonstrating tha…
To investigate Majorana fermionic excitations of a $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor, the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equation is solved on a sphere for two cases: (i) a vortex-antivortex pair at opposite poles and (ii) an edge near the south pole and an antivortex at the north pole. The vortex cores support a state of two Majorana fermions, the energy of which decreases exponentially with the radius of the sphere, independently of a moderate disorder potential. The tunneling conductance of an electron into the superconductor near the position of a vortex is computed for finite temperature, and is compared t…
Quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAH)/$s$-wave superconductor (SC) hybrid systems are known to be an ideal platform for realizing two-dimensional topological superconductors with chiral Majorana edge modes. In this paper we study QAH/unconventional SC hybrid systems whose pairing symmetry is $p$-wave, $d$-wave, chiral $p$-wave, or chiral $d$-wave. The hybrid systems are a generalization of the QAH/$s$-wave SC hybrid system. In view of symmetries of the QAH and pairings, we introduce three topological numbers to classify topological phases of the hybrid systems. One is the Chern number that ch…
Low dimensional structures in the non-trivial topological phase can host the in-gap Majorana bound states, identified experimentally as zero-bias peaks in differential conductance. Theoretical methods for studying Majorana modes are mostly based on the bulk-boundary correspondence or exact diagonalization of finite systems via, e.g., Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. In this paper, we develop an efficient method for identifying the Majorana in-gap (edge) states via looking for extreme eigenvalues of symmetric matrices. The presented approach is based on the Krylov method and allows for study the…

An interplay between pairing and topological orders has been predicted to give rise to superconducting states supporting exotic emergent particles, such as Majorana particles obeying non-Abelian braid statistics. We consider a system of spinless electrons on a Hofstadter lattice with nearest neighbor attractive interaction, and solve the mean-field Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in a self-consistent fashion, leading to gauge invariant solutions that display a rich phase diagram as a function of the chemical potential, magnetic field and the interaction. As the strength of the attractive intera…
Recently, it has been suggested that topological superconductivity and Majorana end states can be realized in a chain of magnetic impurities on the surface of an s-wave superconductor when the magnetic moments form a spin helix as a result of the RKKY interaction mediated by the superconducting substrate. Here, we investigate this scenario theoretically by developing a tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes description starting from the Shiba bound states induced by the individual magnetic impurities. While the resulting model Hamiltonian has similarities with the Kitaev model for one-dimensional …

In superconductors, magnetic impurities induce a pair-breaking potential for Cooper pairs, which locally affects the Bogoliubov quasiparticles and gives rise to Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR or Shiba, in short) bound states in the density of states (DoS). These states carry information on the magnetic coupling strength of the impurity with the superconductor, which determines the many-body ground state properties of the system. Recently, the interest in Shiba physics was boosted by the prediction of topological superconductivity and Majorana modes in magnetically coupled chains and arrays of Shiba imp…
Majorana fermions are predicted to play a crucial role in condensed matter realizations of topological quantum computation. These heretofore undiscovered quasiparticles have been predicted to exist at the cores of vortex excitations in topological superconductors and in heterostructures of superconductors and materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. In this work we examine topological insulators with bulk s-wave superconductivity in the presence of a vortex-lattice generated by a perpendicular magnetic field. Using self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes, calculations we confirm that beyond the…
We study the robustness of Majorana zero energy modes and minigaps of quasiparticle excitations in a vortex by numerically solving Bogoliubov-deGennes equations in a heterostructure composed of an \textit{s} -wave superconductor, a spin-orbit-coupled semiconductor thin film, and a magnetic insulator. This heterostructure was proposed recently as a platform for observing non-Abelian statistics and performing topological quantum computation. The dependence of the Majorana zero energy states and the minigaps on various physics parameters (Zeeman field, chemical potential, spin-orbit coupling stre…
Excitation spectrum of a half-quantum vortex in a p-wave superconductor contains a zero-energy Majorana fermion. This results in a degeneracy of the ground state of the system of several vortices. From the properties of the solutions to Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations in the vortex core we derive the non-abelian statistics of vortices identical to that for the Moore-Read (Pfaffian) quantum Hall state.

We examine the topological properties of a spin-singlet superconductor with Rashba and Dresselhaus (110) spin-orbit couplings. We demonstrate that there are several topological invariants in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian by symmetry analysis. We use the Pfaffian invariant $\mathcal{P}$ for the particle-hole symmetry to demonstrate all the possible phase diagrams of the BdG Hamiltonian. We find that the edge spectrum is either Dirac cone or flat band which supports the emergence of the Majorana fermion in this system. For the Majorana flat bands, a higher symmetric BdG Hamiltonian …
Color superconductivity in high density QCD exhibits the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase. To explore zero modes in the CFL phase in the presence of a non-Abelian vortex with an SU(2) symmetry in the vortex core, we apply the index theorem to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian. From the calculation of the topological index, we find that triplet, doublet and singlet sectors of SU(2) have certain number of chiral Majorana zero modes in the limit of vanishing chemical potential. We also solve the BdG equation by the use of the series expansion to show that the number of zero modes and thei…
The B-phase of superfluid $^3$He is a 3D time-reversal invariant (TRI) topological superfluid with an isotropic energy gap separating the ground-state and bulk continuum states. We report calculations of surface spectrum, spin- and mass current densities originating from the Andreev surface states for confined $^3$He-B. The surface states are Majorana Fermions with their spins polarized transverse to their direction of propagation along the surface. The negative energy states give rise to a ground-state helical spin current confined on the surface. The spectral functions reveal the subtle role…
In iron-based superconductors, band inversion of $d$- and $p$-orbitals yields Dirac semimetallic states. We theoretically investigate their topological properties in normal and superconducting phases, based on the tight-binding model involving full symmetry of the materials. We demonstrate that a Cooper pair between electrons with $d$- and $p$-orbitals relevant to the band structure yields odd-parity superconductivity. Moreover, we present the typical surface states by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation and characterize them by topological invariants defined with crystal symmetry. It is…
Surfaces of nodal noncentrosymmetric superconductors can host flat bands of Majorana modes, which provide a promising platform for quantum computation if one can find methods for manipulating localized Majorana wave packets. We study the fate of such flat bands when part of the surface is subjected to an exchange field induced by a ferromagnetic insulator. We use exact diagonalization to find the eigenstates and eigenenergies of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian of a model system, for which an exchange field is applied along a strip on the surface of a slab. We consider different orientatio…
We study possible applications of high critical temperature nodal superconductors for the search for Majorana bound states in the DIII class. We propose a microscopic analysis of the proximity effect induced by d-wave superconductors on a semiconductor wire with strong spin-orbit coupling. We characterize the induced superconductivity on the wire employing a numerical self-consistent tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach, and analytical considerations on the Green's function. The order parameter induced on the wire, the pair correlation function, and the renormalization of the Fermi poin…
The edges of time reversal symmetry breaking topological superconductors support chiral Majorana bound states as well as spontaneous charge currents. The Majorana modes are a robust, topological property, but the charge currents are non-topological--and therefore sensitive to microscopic details--even if we neglect Meissner screening. We give insight into the non-topological nature of edge currents in chiral p-wave superconductors using a variety of theoretical techniques, including lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, the quasiclassical approximation, and the gradient expansion, and descri…
We investigate the topological aspect of the spin-triplet $f$-wave superconductor UPt$_3$ through microscopic calculations of edge- and vortex-bound states based on the quasiclassical Eilenberger and Bogoliubov-de Gennes theories. It is shown that a gapless and linear dispersion exists at the edge of the $ab$-plane. This forms a Majorana valley, protected by the mirror chiral symmetry. We also demonstrate that, with increasing magnetic field, vortex-bound quasiparticles undergo a topological phase transition from topologically trivial states in the double-core vortex to zero-energy states in t…
Using Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations we numerically calculate the disorder averaged density of states of disordered semiconductor nanowires driven into a putative topological p-wave superconducting phase by spin-orbit coupling, Zeeman spin splitting and s-wave superconducting proximity effect induced by a nearby superconductor. Comparing with the corresponding theoretical self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) results treating disorder effects, we comment on the topological phase diagram of the system in the presence of increasing disorder. Although disorder strongly suppresses the ze…
