We consider the problem of user subset selection for maximizing the sum rate of downlink multi-user MIMO systems. The brute-force search for the optimal user set becomes impractical as the total number of users in a cell increase. We propose a user selection algorithm based on conditional differential entropy. We apply the proposed algorithm on Block diagonalization scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed conditional entropy based algorithm offers better alternatives than the existing user selection algorithms. Furthermore, in terms of sum rate, the solution obtained by the proposed algorithm turns out to be close to the optimal solution with significantly lower computational complexity than brute-force search.

Joint user selection and precoding in multiuser MIMO settings can be interpreted as group sparse recovery in linear models. In this problem, a signal with group sparsity is to be reconstructed from an underdetermined system of equations. This paper utilizes this equivalent interpretation and develops a computationally tractable algorithm based on the method of group LASSO. This paper proposes a joint transmitter-receiver design to minimize the weighted sum power under the post-processing signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (post-SINR) constraints for all subchannels. Simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm can not only satisfy the post-SINR constraints but also easily adjust the power distribution among the users by changing the weights accordingly. This paper studies the optimal bit allocation for shape-gain vector quantization of wireless channels in multiuser (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink systems based on linear precoding. Our design minimizes the mean squared-error between the original and quantized channels through optimal bit allocation across shape (direction) and gain (magnitude) for a fixed feedback overhead per user.
