英文摘要:
The paper presents a combination of the time-parallel "parallel full approximation scheme in space and time" (PFASST) with a parallel multigrid method (PMG) in space, resulting in a mesh-based solver for the three-dimensional heat equation with a uniquely high degree of efficient concurrency. Parallel scaling tests are reported on the Cray XE6 machine "Monte Rosa" on up to 16,384 cores and on the IBM Blue Gene/Q system "JUQUEEN" on up to 65,536 cores. The efficacy of the combined spatial- and temporal parallelization is shown by demonstrating that using PFASST in addition to PMG significantly extends the strong-scaling limit. Implications of using spatial coarsening strategies in PFASST's multi-level hierarchy in large-scale parallel simulations are discussed.
We present a scalability study of Golub-Kahan bidiagonalization for the parallel iterative solution of symmetric indefinite linear systems with a 2x2 block structure. The algorithms have been implemented within the parallel numerical library PETSc. Since a nested inner-outer iteration strategy may be necessary, we investigate different choices for the inner solvers, including parallel sparse direct and multigrid accelerated iterative methods. We show the strong and weak scalability of the Golub-Kahan bidiagonalization based iterative method when applied to a two-dimensional Poiseuille flow and…
Numerical solutions to the Eikonal equation are computed using variants of the fast marching method, the fast sweeping method, and the fast iterative method. In this paper, we provide a unified view of these algorithms that highlights their similarities and suggests a wider class of Eikonal solvers. We then use this framework to justify applying concurrent priority scheduling techniques to Eikonal solvers. We demonstrate that doing so results in good parallel performance for a problem from seismology. We explain why existing Eikonal solvers may produce different results despite using the same …
We propose and analyze a Vanka-type multigrid solver for solving a sequence of complex-shifted Laplacian systems arising in diagonalization-based parallel-in-time algorithms for evolutionary equations. Under suitable assumption, local Fourier analysis shows the proposed Vanka-type smoother achieves a uniform smoothing factor, which is verified by several numerical examples.
In this work, we present a novel class of parallelizable high-order time integration schemes for the approximate solution of additive ODEs. The methods achieve high order through a combination of a suitable quadrature formula involving multiple derivatives of the ODE's right-hand side and a predictor-corrector ansatz. The latter approach is designed in such a way that parallelism in time is made possible. We present thorough analysis as well as numerical results that showcase scaling opportunities of methods from this class of solvers.
This paper presents the results of a preliminary experimental investigation of the performance of a stationary iterative method based on a block staircase splitting for solving singular systems of linear equations arising in Markov chain modelling. From the experiments presented, we can deduce that the method is well suited for solving block banded or more generally localized systems in a parallel computing environment. The parallel implementation has been benchmarked using several Markovian models.
The DD-CPM software library provides a set of tools for the discretization and solution of problems arising from the closest point method (CPM) for partial differential equations on surfaces. The solvers are built on top of the well-known PETSc framework, and are supplemented by custom domain decomposition (DD) preconditioners specific to the CPM. These solvers are fully compatible with distributed memory parallelism through MPI. This library is particularly well suited to the solution of elliptic and parabolic equations, including many reaction-diffusion equations. The software is detailed he…
Discrete Fracture Network models are largely used for very large scale geological flow simulations. For this reason numerical methods require an investigation of tools for efficient parallel solutions on High Performance Computing systems. In this paper we discuss and compare several partitioning and reordering strategies, that result to be highly efficient and scalable, overperforming the classical mesh partitioning approach used to partition a conforming mesh among several processes.
We introduce an ODE solver for the PyTorch ecosystem that can solve multiple ODEs in parallel independently from each other while achieving significant performance gains. Our implementation tracks each ODE's progress separately and is carefully optimized for GPUs and compatibility with PyTorch's JIT compiler. Its design lets researchers easily augment any aspect of the solver and collect and analyze internal solver statistics. In our experiments, our implementation is up to 4.3 times faster per step than other ODE solvers and it is robust against within-batch interactions that lead other solve…
The time harmonic Maxwell equations are of current interest in computational science and applied mathematics with many applications in modern physics. In this work, we present parallel finite element solver for the time harmonic Maxwell equations and compare different preconditioners. We show numerically that standard preconditioners like incomplete LU and the additive Schwarz method lead to slow convergence for iterative solvers like generalized minimal residuals, especially for high wave numbers. Even more we show that also more specialized methods like the Schur complement method also yield…
Phase-field fracture models lead to variational problems that can be written as a coupled variational equality and inequality system. Numerically, such problems can be treated with Galerkin finite elements and primal-dual active set methods. Specifically, low-order and high-order finite elements may be employed, where, for the latter, only few studies exist to date. The most time-consuming part in the discrete version of the primal-dual active set (semi-smooth Newton) algorithm consists in the solutions of changing linear systems arising at each semi-smooth Newton step. We propose a new parall…

We present a parallel hierarchical solver for general sparse linear systems on distributed-memory machines. For large-scale problems, this fully algebraic algorithm is faster and more memory-efficient than sparse direct solvers because it exploits the low-rank structure of fill-in blocks. Depending on the accuracy of low-rank approximations, the hierarchical solver can be used either as a direct solver or as a preconditioner. The parallel algorithm is based on data decomposition and requires only local communication for updating boundary data on every processor. Moreover, the computation-to-co…
Optimally hybrid numerical solvers were constructed for massively parallel generalized eigenvalue problem (GEP).The strong scaling benchmark was carried out on the K computer and other supercomputers for electronic structure calculation problems in the matrix sizes of M = 10^4-10^6 with upto 105 cores. The procedure of GEP is decomposed into the two subprocedures of the reducer to the standard eigenvalue problem (SEP) and the solver of SEP. A hybrid solver is constructed, when a routine is chosen for each subprocedure from the three parallel solver libraries of ScaLAPACK, ELPA and EigenExa. Th…
Sequential numerical methods for integrating initial value problems (IVPs) can be prohibitively expensive when high numerical accuracy is required over the entire interval of integration. One remedy is to integrate in a parallel fashion, "predicting" the solution serially using a cheap (coarse) solver and "correcting" these values using an expensive (fine) solver that runs in parallel on a number of temporal subintervals. In this work, we propose a time-parallel algorithm (GParareal) that solves IVPs by modelling the correction term, i.e. the difference between fine and coarse solutions, using…
This paper describes in detail the implementation of a finite element technique for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations that is provably robust and demonstrates excellent performance on modern computer hardware. The method is second-order accurate in time and space. Robustness here means that the method is proved to be invariant domain preserving under the hyperbolic CFL time step restriction, and the method delivers results that are reproducible. The proposed technique is shown to be accurate on challenging 2D and 3D realistic benchmarks.
Two novel parallel Newton-Krylov Balancing Domain Decomposition by Constraints (BDDC) and Dual-Primal Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting (FETI-DP) solvers are here constructed, analyzed and tested numerically for implicit time discretizations of the three-dimensional Bidomain system of equations. This model represents the most advanced mathematical description of the cardiac bioelectrical activity and it consists of a degenerate system of two non-linear reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs), coupled with a stiff system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). A fin…

We develop a spectral method to solve the heat equation in a closed cylinder, achieving a quasi-optimal $\mathcal{O}(N\log N)$ complexity and high-order, spectral accuracy. The algorithm relies on a Chebyshev--Chebyshev--Fourier (CCF) discretization of the cylinder, which is easily implemented and decouples the heat equation into a collection of smaller, sparse Sylvester equations. In turn, each of these equations is solved using the alternating direction implicit (ADI) method in quasi-optimal time; overall, this represents an improvement in the heat equation solver from $\mathcal{O}(N^{4/3})$…
This paper pushes further the intrinsic capabilities of the GFEM$^{gl}$ global-local approach introduced initially in [1]. We develop a distributed computing approach using MPI (Message Passing Interface) both for the global and local problems. Regarding local problems, a specific scheduling strategy is introduced. Then, to measure correctly the convergence of the iterative process, we introduce a reference solution that revisits the product of classical and enriched functions. As a consequence, we are able to propose a purely matrix-based implementation of the global-local problem. The distri…
In this paper, we study numerical methods for solving the coupled Allen-Cahn/Cahn-Hilliard system associated with a free energy functional of logarithmic type. To tackle the challenge posed by the special free energy functional, we propose a method to approximate the discrete variational derivatives in polynomial forms, such that the corresponding finite difference scheme is unconditionally energy stable and the energy dissipation law is maintained. To further improve the performance of the algorithm, a modified adaptive time stepping strategy is adopted such that the time step size can be fle…
We study the effect of adaptive mesh refinement on a parallel domain decomposition solver of a linear system of algebraic equations. These concepts need to be combined within a parallel adaptive finite element software. A prototype implementation is presented for this purpose. It uses adaptive mesh refinement with one level of hanging nodes. Two and three-level versions of the Balancing Domain Decomposition based on Constraints (BDDC) method are used to solve the arising system of algebraic equations. The basic concepts are recalled and components necessary for the combination are studied in d…
