Network technologies are traditionally centered on wireline solutions. Wireless broadband technologies nowadays provide unlimited broadband usage to users that have been previously offered simply to wireline users. In this paper, we discuss some of the upcoming standards of one of the emerging wireless broadband technology i.e. IEEE 802.11. The newest and the emerging standards fix technology issues or add functionality that will be expected to overcome many of the current standing problems with IEEE 802.11.
With the ever-increasing demand for wireless traffic and quality of serives (QoS), wireless local area networks (WLANs) have developed into one of the most dominant wireless networks that fully influence human life. As the most widely used WLANs standard, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 will release the upcoming next generation WLANs standard amendment: IEEE 802.11ax. This article comprehensively surveys and analyzes the application scenarios, technical requirements, standardization process, key technologies, and performance evaluations of IEEE 802.11ax. Startin…
This paper presents Area coverage of homogenous wireless sensor network using computational geometry. The concepts related to both coverage wireless sensor network and computational geometry have been introduced. Then, the problem has been formulated. After that, current proposed algorithms of hole detection and healing have been investigated and discussed. This survey has two aims: firstly, to explore effectiveness of computational geometry to deal with wireless sensor network coverage problems. Secondly, it will direct scholars who want to enable computational geometry solutions in coverage …
Mobile video is considered a major upcoming application and revenue generator for broadband wireless networks like WiMAX and LTE. Therefore, it is important to design a proper resource allocation scheme for mobile video, since video traffic is both throughput consuming and delay sensitive.
Wireless networks are becoming extremely pervasive while traffic demand is ever increasing. In order to cope with the forecast increase in traffic volume for the upcoming years, as well as the number of connected devices, new technologies, practices and spectrum rearrangements are required. In this context, a key question arises: how to provide extensive backhaul connectivity and capacity for pervasive ultra dense networks? The answer is rather complex, if feasible. To shed some light into this issue we overview potential technologies, either wired or wireless, and identify technical challenge…
A new class of sensing paradigm known as lab-onskin where stretchable and flexible smart sensor devices are integrated into the skin, provides direct monitoring and diagnostic interfaces to the body. Distributed lab-on-skin wireless sensors have the ability to provide continuous long term assessment of the skin health. This paper proposes a distributed skin health monitoring system using a wireless body area network. The system is responsive to the dynamic changes in the skin health, and remotely reports on the same. The proposed algorithm detects the abnormal skin and creates an energy effici…
Devices can now be powered wirelessly by Access Points (APs). However, an AP cannot transmit frequently to charge devices as it may starve other nearby APs operating on the same channel. Consequently, there is a need to schedule the transmissions of APs to ensure their data queues remain short whilst charging energy-harvesting devices. We present a finite-horizon Markov Decision Process (MDP) to capture the queue states at APs and also channel conditions to nodes. We then use the MDP to investigate the following transmission policies: max weight, max queue, best channel state and random. Our r…
Software Defined Networking (SDN) has gained huge popularity in replacing traditional network by offering flexible and dynamic network management. It has drawn significant attention of the researchers from both academia and industries. Particularly, incorporating SDN in Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) applications indicates promising benefits in terms of dealing with challenges like traffic management, authentication, energy efficiency etc. while enhancing administrative control. This paper presents a novel framework for Software Defined WBAN (SDWBAN), which brings the concept of SDN technol…
In-Band Full-Duplex (IBFD) is a technique that enables a wireless node to simultaneously transmit a signal and receive another on the same assigned frequency. Thus, IBFD wireless systems can provide up to twice the channel capacity compared to conventional Half-Duplex (HD) systems. In order to study the feasibility of IBFD networks, reliable models are needed to capture anticipated benefits of IBFD above the physical layer (PHY). In this paper, an accurate analytical model based on Discrete-Time Markov Chain (DTMC) analysis for IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) with IBFD capa…
The relentless development of the Internet of Things (IoT) communication technologies and the gradual maturity of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have led to a powerful cognitive computing ability. Users can now access efficient and convenient smart services in smart-city, green-IoT and heterogeneous networks. AI has been applied in various areas, including the intelligent household, advanced health-care, automatic driving and emotional interactions. This paper focuses on current wireless-communication technologies, including cellular-communication technologies (4G, 5G), low-power wide-area (LPWA…
In telecommunications, network service accessibility as a requirement is closely related to equitably serving the population residing at locations that can most appropriately be described as remote. Remote connectivity, however, would have benefited from a more inclusive consideration in the existing generations of mobile communications. To remedy this, sustainability and its social impact are being positioned as key drivers of sixth generation's (6G) research and standardization activities. In particular, there has been a conscious attempt to understand the demands of remote wireless connecti…
In this article, one first introduces the general landscape of the next generation of wireless communication systems (5G), including its drivers and requirements, and the candidate technologies that might help achieve its intended goals. The following areas, which the author considers to be of particular relevance for 5G, are then introduced: detection and access of free spectrum over bands of an heterogeneous nature, extreme densification of networks (massive base station deployments), extreme increase in the number of antennas in transmitter arrays and their interaction with a novel waveform…
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have the potential to overcome the deployment constraint of Internet of Things (IoT) in remote or rural area. Wirelessly powered communications (WPC) can address the battery limitation of IoT devices through transferring wireless power to IoT devices. The integration of UAVs and WPC, namely UAV-enabled Wireless Powering IoT (Ue-WPIoT) can greatly extend the IoT applications from cities to remote or rural areas. In this article, we present a state-of-the-art overview of Ue-WPIoT by first illustrating the working flow of Ue-WPIoT and discussing the challenges. We …
A promising application of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to the future communication networks is to address emergency communications. This paper considers such a scenario where a UAV is employed to a malfunction area (modeled as a circular disc) in which all ground base stations (BSs) break down. The ground BSs outside the malfunction area are modelled as a homogeneous Poisson point process (HPPP). Particularly, a user-centric cooperative scheme is proposed to serve the UEs in the malfunction area. According to the user equipment's (UE's) connections to the UAV and the nearest ground BS, the…
