Bose atoms in optical lattices are considered at low temperatures and weak interactions, when Bose-Einstein condensate is formed. A self-consistent approach, based on the use of a representative statistical ensemble, is employed, ensuring a gapless spectrum of collective excitations and the validity of conservation laws. In order to show that the approach is applicable to both weak and tight binding, the problem is treated in the Bloch as well as in the Wannier representations. Both these ways result in similar expressions that are compared for the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogolubov approximation. A convenient general formula for the superfluid fraction of atoms in an optical lattice is derived.
In light of the experimental evidence for the existence of a superfluid region in a Bose--Condensed Sodium gas a theoretical model is put forward. It will be shown that the predictions of the present work do match with the extant experimental readouts. As a by product we also calculate the speed of sound and compare it against the current experimental results.
Motivated by the recent experiment [R. Lopes et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 190404 (2017)] with a homogeneous Bose gas, we investigate a homogeneous dilute Bose gas to calculate the quantum depletion density. By means of the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action approach within an improved Hartree-Fock approximation, the condensed fraction is recovered in a simpler manner and compared with corresponding findings in experimental data. Additionally, higher-order terms are taken into account for several physical quantities, in particular for the chemical potential and free energy density.
In an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate quenched to the unitary regime, we predict the sequential formation of a significant fraction of condensed pairs and triples. At short-distances, we demonstrate the two-body and Efimovian character of the condensed pairs and triples, respectively. As the system evolves, the size of the condensed pairs and triples becomes comparable to the interparticle distance, such that many-body effects become significant. The structure of the condensed triples depends on the relative size of Efimov states to density scales. Unexpectedly, we find universal condensed tri…
In this paper, we studied a dilute quasi two-dimensional dipolar Bose-condensed with two- and three-body contact, and Coulomb interactions using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov approximation. We analyze numerically the effects of three-body contact, and Coulomb interactions on the energy spectrum, the quantum and thermal noncondensate fraction of the system. We show that increasing the three-body contact and Coulomb interactions leads to the appearance of rotonization and condensate instability at stronger dipole-dipole interaction. Also we find that the temperature dependence of the thermal…
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensed cloud of atoms which rotate in a toroidal/annular potential. Assuming one-dimensional motion, we evaluate the critical frequencies associated with the effect of hysteresis and the critical coupling for stability of the persistent currents. We perform these calculations using both the mean-field approximation and the method of numerical diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian which includes corrections due to the finiteness of the atom number.
We generalize the Landau-Khalatnikov hydrodynamic theory for superfluid helium to two-component (binary) Bose mixtures at arbitrary temperatures. In particular, we include the spin-drag terms that correspond to viscous coupling between the clouds. Therefore, our theory not only describes the usual collective modes of the individual components, e.g., first and second sound, but also results in new collective modes, where both constituents participate. We study these modes in detail and present their dispersions using thermodynamic quantities obtained within the Popov approximation.
We study the condensed phase of a Bose-Fermi mixture with a tunable pairing interaction between bosons and fermions with many-body diagrammatic methods and fixed-node diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A universal behavior of the condensate fraction and bosonic momentum distribution with respect to the boson concentration is found to hold in an extended range of boson-fermion couplings and concentrations. For vanishing boson density, we prove that the bosonic condensate fraction reduces to the quasiparticle weight Z of the Fermi polaron studied in the context of polarized Fermi gases, …
Phase transitions, as the condensation of a gas to a liquid, are often revealed by a discontinuous behavior of thermodynamic quantities. For liquid Helium, for example, a divergence of the specific heat signals the transition from the normal fluid to the superfluid state. Apart from liquid helium, determining the specific heat of a Bose gas has proven to be a challenging task, for example for ultracold atomic Bose gases. Here we examine the thermodynamic behavior of a trapped two-dimensional photon gas, a system that allows us to spectroscopically determine the specific heat and the entropy of…
We investigate the equilibrium phase-coherence properties of Bose-condensed particle systems, focusing on their shape dependence and finite-size scaling (FSS). We consider three-dimensional (3D) homogeneous systems confined to anisotropic L x L x L_a boxes, below the BEC transition temperature $T_c$. We show that the phase correlations develop peculiar anisotropic FSS for any $T<T_c$, in the large-$L$ limit keeping the ratio λ= L_a/L^2 fixed. This phenomenon is effectively described by the 3D spin-wave (SW) theory. Its universality is confirmed by quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the 3D Bose…
We investigate a system of $N$ spinless bosons confined in quasi-two-dimensional harmonic trap with repulsive two-body finite-range Gaussian interaction potential of large $s$-wave scattering length. Exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix is carried out to obtain the $N$-body ground state as well as low-lying excited states, using Davidson algorithm in beyond lowest-Landau-level approximation. We examine the finite-range effects of the interaction potential on the many-body ground state energy as also the degree of condensation of the Bose-condensed gas. The results obtained indicate …
The Hohenberg-Martin dilemma of conserving versus gapless theories for systems with Bose-Einstein condensate is considered. This dilemma states that, generally, a theory characterizing a system with broken global gauge symmetry, which is necessary for Bose-Einstein condensation, is either conserving, but has a gap in its spectrum, or is gapless, but does not obey conservation laws. In other words, such a system either displays a gapless spectrum, which is necessary for condensate existence, but is not conserving, which implies that it corresponds to an unstable system, or it respects conservat…
A trapped Bose-Einstein condensate, being strongly perturbed, exhibits several spatial structures. First, there appear quantum vortices. Increasing the amount of the injected energy leads to the formation of vortex tangles representing quantum vortex turbulence. Continuing energy injection makes the system so strongly perturbed that vortices become destroyed and there develops another kind of spatial structures with essentially heterogeneous spatial density. These structures consist of high-density droplets, or grains, surrounded by the regions of low density. The droplets are randomly distrib…
A spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein-condensed cloud of atoms confined in an annular trapping potential shows a variety of phases that we investigate in the present study. Starting with the non-interacting problem, the homogeneous phase that is present in an untrapped system is replaced by a sinusoidal density variation in the limit of a very narrow annulus. In the case of an untrapped system there is another phase with a striped-like density distribution, and its counterpart is also found in the limit of a very narrow annulus. As the width of the annulus increases, this picture persists qualita…
Bose-Einstein condensation of light in 2D is characterized by two classical fields corresponding to two polarizations of light as well as by the distribution of dye molecules inducing light thermalization through dipolar transition. In the case when this transition is triple-degenerate the resulting field theory for the condensate of light is O(4) symmetric, which precludes algebraic long range order in 2D at any finite temperature $T$. If the dipolar degeneracy is removed, then, equilibrium phases with lower symmetries -- O(2)$\times$Z$_2$ and O(2) can emerge. Accordingly, algebraic off diago…
We investigate the properties of quantized vortices in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensed gas by means of a generalised Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The size of the vortex core hugely increases by increasing the weight of the dipolar interaction and approaching the transition to the supersolid phase. The critical angular velocity for the existence of an energetically stable vortex decreases in the supersolid, due to the reduced value of the density in the interdroplet region. The angular momentum per particle associated with the vortex line is shown to be smaller than $\hbar$, reflecting the redu…
In this paper we study the properties of cold bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice system where Bose-condensation occurs at a momentum point k with non-zero k-space Berry curvature. By combining results from both analytic and numerical approaches, we show that the boson system carries non-universal, temperature dependent equilibrium angular momentum and edge current at low temperatures.
The general approach for describing systems with Bose-Einstein condensate, where atoms interact through nonlocal pair potentials, is presented. A special attention is paid to nonintegrable potentials, such as the dipolar interaction potential. The potentials that are not absolutely integrable can have not well defined Fourier transforms. Using formally such not defined Fourier transforms leads to unphysical conclusions. For making the Fourier transform well defined, the interaction potential has to be regularized. This is illustrated by the example of dipolar interactions.
We consider the mass-imbalanced sensibility for the emergence of vortex patterns in the Bose-Einstein condensed binary mixture of rubidium-cesium ($^{85}$Rb-$^{133}$Cs), confined in quasi-two-dimensional harmonic traps, with one species linearly perturbed in one direction. Non-dipolar coupled species are chosen to highlight mass symmetry effects. We first analyze the condensed mixture in the unperturbed non-rotating regime, where radial phase separation is verified in the immiscible regime, which occurs for large ratio between inter- and intra-species repulsive interactions. By going to the li…
We demonstrate direct laser cooling of a gas of rubidium 87 atoms to quantum degeneracy. The method does not involve evaporative cooling, is fast, and induces little atom loss. The atoms are trapped in a two-dimensional optical lattice that enables cycles of cloud compression to increase the density, followed by degenerate Raman sideband cooling to decrease the temperature. Light-induced loss at high atomic density is substantially reduced by using far red detuned optical pumping light. Starting with 2000 atoms, we prepare 1400 atoms in 300 ms at quantum degeneracy, as confirmed by the appeara…
We study cavity quantum electrodynamics of Bose-condensed atoms that are subjected to continuous monitoring of the light leaking out of the cavity. Due to a given detection record of each stochastic realization, individual runs spontaneously break the symmetry of the spatial profile of the atom cloud and this symmetry can be restored by considering ensemble averages over many realizations. We show that the cavity optomechanical excitations of the condensate can be engineered to target specific collective modes. This is achieved by exploiting the spatial structure and symmetries of the collecti…
Stability and dynamical behavior of binary Bose-Einstein condensed mixtures trapped on the surface of a rigid spherical shell are investigated in the mean-field level, exploring the miscibility with and without vortex charges, considering repulsive and attractive interactions. In order to compute the critical points for the stability, we follow the Bogoliubov-de Gennes method for the analysis of perturbed solutions, with the constraint that initially the stationary states are in a complete miscible configuration. For the perturbed equal density mixture, of a homogeneous uniform gas and when hi…
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate, which is confined in a very tight toroidal/annular trap, in the presence of a potential, which breaks the axial symmetry of the Hamiltonian. We investigate the stationary states of the condensate, when its density distribution co-rotates with the symmetry-breaking potential. As the strength of the potential increases, we have a gradual transition from vortex excitation to solid-body-like motion. Of particular importance are states where the system is static and yet it has a nonzero current/circulation, which is a realization of persistent currents/reflec…
We theoretically investigate a Bose-condensed exciton gas out of equilibrium. Within the framework of the combined BCS-Leggett strong-coupling theory with the non-equilibrium Keldysh formalism, we show how the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of excitons is suppressed to eventually disappear, when the system is in the non-equilibrium steady state. The supply of electrons and holes from the bath is shown to induce quasi-particle excitations, leading to the partial occupation of the upper branch of Bogoliubov single-particle excitation spectrum. We also discuss how this quasi-particle induction …
We explore the asymmetric sequential Landau-Zener (LZ) dynamics in an ensemble of interacting Bose condensed two-level atoms coupled with a cavity field. Assuming the couplings between all atoms and the cavity field are identical, the interplay between atom-atom interaction and detuning may lead to a series of LZ transitions. Unlike the conventional sequential LZ transitions, which are symmetric to the zero detuning, the LZ transitions of Bose condensed atoms in a cavity field are asymmetric and sensitively depend on the photon number distribution of the cavity. In LZ processes involving singl…
Motivated by numerous experiments on Bose-Einstein condensed atoms which have been performed in tight trapping potentials of various geometries (elongated and/or toroidal/annular), we develop a general method which allows us to reduce the corresponding three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the order parameter into an effectively one-dimensional equation, taking into account the interactions (i.e., treating the width of the transverse profile variationally) and the curvature of the trapping potential. As an application of our model we consider atoms which rotate in a toroidal trapping…
