We propose to implement quantum computing based on electronic spin qubits by controlling the propagation of the electron wave packets through the helical edge states of quantum spin Hall systems (QSHs). Specfically, two non-commutative single-qubit gates, which rotate a qubit around z and y axes, can be realized by utilizing gate voltages either on a single QSH edge channel or on a quantum point contact structure. The more challenging two-qubit controlled phase gate can be implemented through the on-demand capacitive Coulomb interaction between two adjacent edge channels from two parallel QSHs. As a result, a universal set of quantum gates can be achieved in an all-electrical way. The fidelity and purity of the two-qubit gate are calculated with both time delay and finite width of the wave packets taken into consideration, which can reach high values with the existing high-quality single electron source.
We consider a graphene sheet with a zigzag edge subject to a perpendicular magnetic field and investigate the propagation of in-plane acoustic edge waves under the influence of magnetically induced electronic edge states. In particular is is shown that propagation is significantly blocked for certain frequencies defined by the resonant absorption due to electronic-acoustic interaction. We suggest that strong interaction between the acoustic and electronic edge states in graphene may generate significant non-linear effects leading to the existence of acoustic solitons in such systems.
We study various geometrical aspects of the propagation of particles obeying fractional statistics in the physical setting of the quantum Hall system. We find a discrete set of zeros for the two-particle kernel in the lowest Landau level; these arise from a combination of a two-particle Aharonov-Bohm effect and the exchange phase related to fractional statistics. The kernel also shows short distance exclusion statistics, for instance, in a power law behavior as a function of initial and final positions of the particles. We employ the one-particle kernel to compute impurity-mediated tunneling a…
Magnetic skyrmions are whirl-like nano-objects with topological protection. When driven by direct currents (DC), skyrmions move but experience a transverse deflection. This so-called skyrmion Hall effect is often regarded a drawback for memory applications. Herein, we show that this unique effect can also be favorable for spintronic applications: We show that in a racetrack with a broken inversion symmetry, the skyrmion Hall effect allows to translate an alternating current (AC) into a directed motion along the track, like in a ratchet. We analyze several modes of the ratchet mechanism and sho…
Anomalous spin-Hall effects (SHE) and anomalous inverse spin-Hall effects (ISHE) are predicted when the order parameters are involved in the charge-spin interconversion. A spin current whose propagation and polarization are collinear and transverse to an applied charge current can be generated when the charge current is parallel to the magnetization $\vec M$ in a ferromagnet or to the Neel order $\vec n$ in an anti-ferromagnet. When the applied charge current is perpendicular to the order parameter, two spin currents can be generated. One is the spin current polarized along the order parameter…
Spin Hall effect converts charge current to spin current, which can exert spin-torque to switch the magnetization of a nanomagnet. Recently, it is shown that the ratio of spin current to charge current using spin Hall effect can be made more than unity by using the areal geometry judiciously, unlike the case of conventional spin-transfer-torque switching of nanomagnets. This can enable energy-efficient means to write a bit of information in nanomagnets. Here, we study the energy dissipation in such spin Hall devices. By solving stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of magnetization dynam…
A three-terminal conductor presents peculiar thermoelectric and thermal properties in the quantum Hall regime: it can behave as a symmetric rectifier and as an ideal thermal diode. These properties rely on the coherent propagation along chiral edge channels. We investigate the effect of breaking the coherent propagation by the introduction of a probe terminal. It is shown that chiral effects not only survive the presence of incoherence but they can even improve the thermoelectric performance in the totally incoherent regime.
We present a manifestly gauge-invariant description of Chern numbers associated with the Berry connection defined on a discretized Brillouin zone. It provides an efficient method of computing (spin) Hall conductances without specifying gauge-fixing conditions. We demonstrate that it correctly reproduces quantized Hall conductances even on a coarsely discretized Brillouin zone. A gauge-dependent integer-valued field, which plays a key role in the formulation, is evaluated in several gauges. An extension to the non-Abelian Berry connection is also given.
We report an order-N approach to compute the Kubo Hall conductivity for disorderd two-dimensional systems reaching tens of millions of orbitals, and realistic values of the applied external magnetic fields (as low as a few Tesla). A time-evolution scheme is employed to evaluate the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ using a wavepacket propagation method and a continued fraction expansion for the computation of diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements of the Green functions. The validity of the method is demonstrated by comparison of results with brute-force diagonalization of the Kubo formula, using …
We introduce a theoretical framework for computing transport coefficients for complex materials. As a first example, we resolve long-standing inconsistencies between experiment and theory pertaining to the conductivity and Hall mobility for amorphous silicon and show that the Hall sign anomaly is a consequence of localized states. Next, we compute the AC conductivity of amorphous polyanaline. The formalism is applicable to complex materials involving defects and band-tail states originating from static topological disorder and extended states. The method may be readily integrated with current …
Most functionalities of modern electronic circuits rely on the possibility to modify the path fol- lowed by the electrons using, e.g. field effect transistors. Here we discuss the interplay between the modification of this path and the quantum dynamics of the electronic flow. Specifically, we study the propagation of charge pulses through the edge states of a two-dimensional electron gas in the quantum Hall regime. By sending radio-frequency (RF) excitations on a top gate capacitively coupled to the electron gas, we manipulate these edge state dynamically. We find that a fast RF change of the …
The transversal propagation of the edge states in a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall system are classified by decay characteristic quantity $λ$. Two different modes of the helical edge states exhibit distinct behaviors. The penetration depth is momentum dependent in normal edge states. The finite size gap decays monotonously with sample width, leading to the normal size effect. In contrast, the penetration depth maintains a uniform minimal value in the special edge states with much shorter length. The finite size gap decays non-monotonously with width, leading to the anomalous finite size eff…
We experimentally investigate the current-induced magnetization reversal in Pt/[Co/Ni]$_3$/Al multilayers combining the anomalous Hall effect and magneto-optical Kerr effect techniques in crossbar geometry. The magnetization reversal occurs through nucleation and propagation of a domain of opposite polarity for a current density of the order of 0.3 TA/m$^2$. In these experiments we demonstrate a full control of each stage: i)the Ørsted field controls the domain nucleation and ii) domain-wall propagation occurs by spin torque from the Pt spin Hall effect. This scenario requires an in-plane magn…
We have observed propagation of Edge Magneto-Plasmon (EMP) modes in graphene in the Quantum Hall regime by performing picosecond time of flight measurements between narrow contacts on the perimeter of micrometric exfoliated graphene. We find the propagation to be chiral with low attenuation and to have a velocity which is quantized on Hall plateaus. The velocity has two contributions, one arising from the Hall conductivity and the other from carrier drift along the edge, which we were able to separate by their different filling factor dependence. The drift component is found to be slightly les…
We study current-current correlation in an electronic analog of a beam splitter realized with edge channels of a fractional quantum Hall liquid at Laughlin filling fractions. In analogy with the known result for chiral electrons, if the currents are measured at points located after the beam splitter, we find that the zero frequency equilibrium correlation vanishes due to the chiral propagation along the edge channels. Furthermore, we show that the current-current correlation, normalized to the tunneling current, exhibits clear signatures of the Laughlin quasi-particles' fractional statistics.
An interaction of non-uniform plane elastic modes of the waveguide type with monolayer and double-layer quantum Hall systems is considered. It is shown, that unlike the case of the surface acoustic wave propagation, the restriction on maximal values of the wave vectors for which the velocity shift can be observed experimentally does not take place for the waveguide modes. In case of study of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states the effect can be used for measuring a dependence of the effective magnetic length on the filling factor and for observing phase transitions in double-layer sy…
A scenario of quantum computing process based on the manipulation of a large number of nuclear spins in Quantum Hall (QH) ferromagnet is presented. It is found that vacuum quantum fluctuations in the QH ferromagnetic ground state at filling factor $ν=1$, associated with the virtual excitations of spin waves, lead to fast incomplete decoherence of the nuclear spins. A fundamental upper bound on the length of the computer memory is set by this fluctuation effect.
The quantum Hall effect, observed in a two-dimensional electron gas subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field, imposes a 1D-like chiral, downstream, transport of charge carriers along the sample edges. Although this picture remains valid for electrons and Laughlin's fractional quasiparticles, it no longer holds for quasiparticles in the so-called hole-conjugate states. These states are expected, when disorder and interactions are weak, to harbor upstream charge modes. However, so far, charge currents were observed to flow exclusively downstream in the quantum Hall regime. Studying the canoni…
The quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect is known to be unstable to perturbations violating time-reversal symmetry. We show that creating a narrow ferromagnetic (FM) region near the edge of a QSH sample can push one of the counterpropagating edge states to the inner boundary of the FM region, and leave the other at the outer boundary, without changing their spin polarizations and propagation directions. Since the two edge states are spatially separated into different "lanes", the QSH effect becomes robust against symmetry-breaking perturbations.
By restricting the motion of high-mobility 2D electron gas to a network of channels with smooth confinement, we were able to trace, both classically and quantum-mechanically, the interplay of backscattering, and of the bending action of a weak magnetic field. Backscattering limits the mobility, while bending initiates quantization of the Hall conductivity. We demonstrate that, in restricted geometry, electron motion reduces to two Chalker-Coddington networks, with opposite directions of propagation along the links, which are weakly coupled by disorder. Interplay of backscattering and bending r…
We have exactly solved the eigenequation of a two-dimensional Dirac fermion moving on the surface of a sphere under the influence of a radial magnetic field B, and obtained an exact expression of the collective excitation energy gap for the filling factors $ν=p/(2mp\pm 1)$, m and p are non-zero integers, which is very well agreement with the computing results.
We investigate charge and energy transport in a three-terminal quantum Hall conductor. The peculiar properties of chiral propagation along the edges of the sample have important consequences on the response to thermal biases. Based on the separation of charge and heat flows, thermoelectric conversion and heat rectification can be manipulated by tuning the scattering at gate-modulated constrictions. Chiral motion in a magnetic field allows for a different behaviour of left- and right-moving carriers giving rise to thermal rectification by redirecting the heat flows. We propose our system both a…
We discuss the propagation and fractionalization of localized charges on the edges of quantum Hall bars of variable widths, where interactions between the edges give rise to Luttinger liquid behavior with a non-trivial interaction parameter g. We focus in particular on the separation of an initial charge pulse into a sharply defined front charge and a broader tail. The front pulse describes an adiabatically dressed electron which carries a non-integer charge, which is \sqrt{g} times the electron charge. We discuss how the presence of this fractional charge can, in principle, be detected throug…
We launch surface acoustic waves (SAW) along both the $<110>$ and the $<1\bar{1}0>$ directions of a Hall bar and measure the anisotropic conductivity in a high purity GaAs 2-D electron system in the Quantum Hall regime of the stripe and the bubble phases. In the anisotropic stripe phase, SAW propagating along the "easy" $<110>$ direction sense a compressible behavior (finite resistance) which is seen in standard transport measurement only if current flows along the "hard" $<1\bar{1}0>$ direction. In the isotropic bubble phase, the SAW data show compressible behavior in both directions, in mark…
Spin waves are collective excitations of magnetic systems. An attractive setting for studying long-lived spin-wave physics is the quantum Hall (QH) ferromagnet, which forms spontaneously in clean two-dimensional electron systems at low temperature and in a perpendicular magnetic field. We used out-of-equilibrium occupation of QH edge channels in graphene to excite and detect spin waves in magnetically ordered QH states. Our experiments provide direct evidence for long distance spin wave propagation through different ferromagnetic phases in the N=0 Landau level, as well as across the insulating…
We consider a model for an edge state of electronic systems in the quantum Hall regime with filling $ν=1$ and in the quantum spin Hall regime. In both cases the system is in contact with two reservoirs by tunneling at point contacts. Both systems are locally driven by applying an ac voltage in one of the contacts. By weakly coupling them to a third reservoir, the transport of the generated heat is studied in two different ways: i) when the third reservoir acts as a thermometer the local temperature is sensed, and ii) when the third reservoir acts as a voltage probe the time-dependent local vol…
Spin-Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) are promising spintronic devices to realize current controlled GHz frequency signals in nanoscale devices for neuromorphic computing and creating Ising systems. However, traditional SHNOs -- devices based on transition metals -- have high auto-oscillation threshold currents as well as low quality factors and output powers. Here we demonstrate a new type of hybrid SHNO based on a permalloy (Py) ferromagnetic-metal nanowire and low-damping ferrimagnetic insulator, in the form of epitaxial lithium aluminum ferrite (LAFO) thin films. The superior characteristics …
By using observations from pump-probe stroboscopic confocal microscopy and spectroscopy, we demonstrate the dynamics of trions and the fractional quantum Hall edge on the order of $\sim1$ ps. The propagation of the quantum Hall edge state excited by a voltage pulse is detected as a temporal change in reflectance in the downstream edge probed by optical pulses synchronized with the voltage pulse. The temporal resolution of such stroboscopic pump-probe measurements is as fast as the duration time of the probe pulse ($\sim1$ ps). This ultra-fast stroboscope measurement enables us to distinguish b…
Based on a microscopic evaluation of the local current density, a treatment of edge magnetoplasmons (EMP) is presented for confining potentials that allow Landau level (LL) flattening to be neglected. Mode damping due to electron-phonon interaction is evaluated. For nu=1, 2 there exist independent modes spatially symmetric or antisymmetric with respect to the edge. Certain modes, changing shape during propagation, are nearly undamped even for very strong dissipation and are termed edge helicons. For nu > 2 inter-LL Coulomb coupling leads to a strong repulsion of the decoupled LL fundamental mo…
A quantum Hall edge state provides a rich foundation to study electrons in 1-dimension (1d) but is limited to chiral propagation along a single direction. Here, we demonstrate a versatile platform to realize new 1d systems made by combining quantum Hall edge states of opposite chiralities in a graphene electron-hole bilayer. Using this approach, we engineer helical 1d edge conductors where the counterpropagating modes are localized in separate electron and hole layers by a tunable electric field. These helical conductors exhibit strong nonlocal transport signals and suppressed backscattering d…
We have studied collective spin density excitations of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in rotating Bose-Einstein condensation for the three filling fractions of first series of Jain's composite fermion sequences. We have considered, short-ranged contact interactions between the Bose atoms as well as long range Coulomb interactions to compare the nature of the spectras with FQHE of electrons. Using Monte Carlo method for finite but large number of particles, the lowest order collective modes of spin-reversed sectors is calculated here, by computing the energy differences of the respective…
We derive nonlinear wave equations describing the propagation of slowly-varying wavepackets formed by topological valley-Hall edge states. We show that edge pulses break up even in the absence of spatial dispersion due to nonlinear self-steepening. Self-steepening leads to the previously-unattended effect of a gradient catastrophe, which develops in a finite time determined by the ratio between the pulse's nonlinear frequency shift and the size of the topological band gap. Taking the weak spatial dispersion into account results then in the formation of stable edge quasi-solitons. Our findings …
We investigate the energy exchanges along an electronic quantum channel realized in the integer quantum Hall regime at filling factor $ν_L=2$. One of the two edge channels is driven out-of-equilibrium and the resulting electronic energy distribution is measured in the outer channel, after several propagation lengths $0.8~μ$m$\leq L\leq30~μ$m. Whereas there are no discernable energy transfers toward thermalized states, we find efficient energy redistribution between the two channels without particle exchanges. At long distances $L\geq10~μ$m, the measured energy distribution is a hot Fermi funct…
We theoretically investigate the evolution of the peak height of an energy resolved electronic wave-packets ballistically propagating along integer quantum Hall edge channels at filling factor $ν=2$. This is ultimately related to the elastic scattering amplitude for the fermionic excitations evaluated at different injection energy. We investigate this quantity assuming a short range capacitive coupling between the edges. Moreover, we also take into account phenomenologically the possibility of energy dissipation towards additional degrees of freedom both linear and quadratic in the injection e…

We describe a theoretical framework for the interpretation of time-resolved phonon absorption experiments carried out in the fractional quantum Hall regime of a magnetically quantized two-dimensional electron system (2des). The only phonons which can be absorbed at low temperature are those whose energies exceed the magnetoroton gap predicted by Girvin, MacDonald and Platzman. The rate of energy transfer from the phonons to the electron liquid is entirely controlled by the creation of these collective excitations. Using simple isotropic approximations for the phonon propagation and electron-ph…
We argue that the static non-linear Hall conductivity can always be represented as a vector in two-dimensions and as a pseudo-tensor in three-dimensions independent of its microscopic origin. In a single band model with a constant relaxation rate this vector or tensor is proportional to the Berry curvature dipole \cite{Sodemann_2015}. Here, we develop a quantum Boltzmann formalism to second order in electric fields. We find that in addition to the Berry Curvature Dipole term, there exist additional disorder mediated corrections to the non-linear Hall tensor that have the same scaling in impuri…
The close theoretical analogy between the physics of rapidly rotating atomic Bose condensates and the quantum Hall effect (i.e., a two dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field) was first pointed out ten years ago. As a consequence of this analogy, a large number of strongly correlated quantum Hall-type states have been predicted to occur in rotating Bose systems, and suggestions have been made how to manipulate and observe their fractional quasiparticle excitations. Due to a very rapid development in experimental techniques over the past years, experiments on BEC now appear to be cl…
Topology is key in describing unconventional quantum phases of matter and devising robust quantum technology. Exactly how topology mixes with quantum mechanics remains largely unclear, as testified by the lack of a unifying microscopic theory for the ever-expanding and still puzzling transport behavior of electrons in the Quantum Hall Effect. Here we formulate a microscopic theory able to quantitatively describe the large wealth of Quantum Hall physics starting from one basic assumption, that the topological constraint in actual space leads to a superposition of states in the associated angula…
The wave propagation of edge modes in a superlattice of 2D electron Gases in quantum Hall regime is investigated. After introducing surfaces charge and current densities at the edge, the Maxwell equations are solved for waves running along the boundary. The constitutive relations expressing the edge charge and current densities in terms of the fields at the boundary are derived. One of them is similar to the London equation for superconductor currents. The dispersion relation and wave polarizations for the momenta region $w/c<k$ are also obtained for propagation along the borderlines of the el…
We present an interferometric scheme producing orbital entanglement in a quantum Hall system upon electron-hole pair emission via tunneling. The proposed setup is an electronic version of the optical interferometer proposed by Cabello et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 040401 (2009)], and is feasible with present technology. It requires single-channel propagation and a single primary source. We discuss the creation of entanglement and its detection by the violation of a Bell inequality.
We consider the effect of Coulomb interactions in the propagation of electrons, prepared in arbitrary spin states, on chiral edge channels in the integer quantum Hall regime. Electrons are injected and detected at the same energy at different locations of the Hall bar, which is modeled as a chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The current is computed perturbatively in the tunneling amplitudes, within a non-crossing approximation using exact solutions of the interacting Green's functions. In the case of different channel velocities, the spin precession effect is evaluated, and the role of interact…
We present scanning optical stroboscopic confocal microscopy and spectroscopy measurements wherein three degrees of freedom, namely energy, real-space, and real-time, are resolvable. The edge-state propagation is detected as a temporal change in the optical response in the downstream edge. We succeeded in visualizing the excited states of the most fundamental fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state and the collective excitations near the edge. The results verify the current understanding of the edge excitation and also point toward further dynamics outside the edge channel.
Photoexcitation and shaping of a propagating surface plasmon polariton (SPP) on silver and gold microstructures are well established and lead to the discovery of the plasmonic spin-Hall effect recently. Whereas silver is often the material of choice due to its exceptional low plasma frequency and weak damping, similar observations have not been reported for ferromagnetic metals. In this work, we report on propagating SPPs on Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ microstructures imaged by photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) in combination with a tunable femtosecond laser system at MHz repetition rate. Circul…
A Quantum Spin-Hall Insulator (QSHI) is implemented into a simple mass-spring Kagome lattice. The transition from the trivial state to the topological one is described by an invariant Chern number function of a contrast parameter. The band diagram and helical edge states characteristic of QSHI are obtained by a combination of numerical and analytical methods. In particular, these states are shown to be Stoneley wave solutions to a set of asymptotic continuous motion equations. Last, scatterless propagation of polarized topological edge waves around sharp corners is demonstrated and robustness …
We have found solution to a model of tunneling between a multi-channel Fermi liquid reservoir and an edge of the principal fractional quantum Hall liquid (FQHL) in the strong coupling limit. The solution explains how the absence of the time-reversal symmetry at high energies due to chiral edge propagation makes the universal two-terminal conductance of the FQHL fractionally quantized and different from that of a 1D Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid wire, where a similar model but preserving the time-reversal symmetry predicts unsuppressed free-electron conductance.
We calculate the tunneling current through long line junctions of a $ν=5/2$ quantum Hall liquid and i) another $ν=5/2$ liquid, ii) an integer quantum Hall liquid and iii) a quantum wire. Momentum resolved tunneling provides information about the number, propagation directions and other features of the edge modes and thus helps distinguish several competing models of the 5/2 state. We investigate transport properties of two proposed Abelian states: $K=8 state and 331 state, and four possible non-Abelian states: Pfaffian, edge-reconstructed Pfaffian, and two versions of the anti-Pfaffian state. …

Using mapping between topological defects in an easy-plane magnet and electrical charges, we study interplay between vorticity and spin currents. We demonstrate that the flow of vorticity is accompanied by the transverse spin current generation -- an effect which can be termed as the spin Hall effect of vorticity. We study this effect across the BKT transition and establish the role of dissipation and spin non-conservation in the crossover from spin superfluidity to diffusive spin transport. Our results pave the way for low power computing devices relying on vorticity and spin flows.
We investigate the propagation of electron vortex beams in a magnetic field. It is pointed out that when electron vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum propagate in a magnetic field, the Berry curvature associated with the scalar electron moving in a cyclic path around the vortex line is modified from that in free space. This alters the spin-orbit interaction, which affects the propagation of nonparaxial beams. The electron vortex beams with tilted vortex lead to spin Hall effect in free space. In presence of a magnetic field in time space we have spin filtering such that either posit…
