The Chiral d-density wave (CDDW) order, at the anti-ferromagnetic wave vector (pi,pi), is assumed to represent the pseudo-gap (PG) state of a hole-doped cuprate superconductor. The pairing interaction required for the PG phase corresponds to a repulsive interaction of Coulombic origin. The d-wave superconductivity (DSC), driven by an appropriate assumed attractive interaction, is discussed within the mean-field framework together with the CDDW ordering. The single-particle excitation spectrum in the CDDW and DSC state is characterized by the Bogolubov quasi-particle bands-a characteristic feature of SC state. The coupled gap equations are solved self-consistently together with the equation to determine the chemical potential. With the pinning of the van Hove-singularities close to the chemical potential, one is able to calculate the thermodynamic and transport properties of the under-doped cuprates in a consistent manner. The electronic specific heat displays non-Fermi liquid feature in the CDDW state. The CDDW and DSC are found to represent two competing orders as the former brings about a depletion of the spectral weight (and Raman response function density) available for pairing in the anti-nodal region of momentum space. This is not in agreement with a preformed pairing scenario and justifies the different structures we have assumed for the pseudo-gap and the superconducting gap. Furthermore, these gaps in the excitation spectrum do not merge into a single quadrature gap. It is also shown that the depletion of the spectral weight below Tc at energies larger than the gap amplitude occurs. This is an indication of the strong-coupling superconductivity in cuprates. The calculation of the ratio of the quasi-particle thermal conductivity and temperature in the superconductiong phase is found to be constant in the limit of near-zero quasi-particle scattering rate.
We have studied the electronic structure of electron-doped cuprate superconductors via measurements of high-field Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in thin films. In optimally doped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ and La$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$, quantum oscillations indicate the presence of a small Fermi surface, demonstrating that electronic reconstruction is a general feature of the electron-doped cuprates, despite the location of the superconducting dome at very different doping levels. Negative high-field magnetoresistance is correlated with an anomalous low-temperature change in scatter…
Since their experimental discovery in 1989, the electron-doped cuprate superconductors have presented both a major challenge and a major opportunity. The major challenge has been to determine whether these materials are fundamentally different from or essentially similar to their hole-doped counterparts; a major opportunity because answering this question would strongly constrain the possible explanations for what is the essential physics that leads to high temperature superconductivity in the cuprates, which is still not agreed upon. Here we argue that experimental results over the past 30 ye…

The following letter, titled "Electron-Superconductivity in Oxides?", was submitted to Nature [Scientific Correspondence Section] on March 2, 1989, shortly after the experimental discovery of electron-doped cuprates announced in Nature on January 26, 1989. It predicted the findings recently reported in arXiv:1810.04634 by Yangmu Li, W. Tabis, Y. Tang, G. Yu, J. Jaroszynski, N. Barisic and M. Greven that "clearly point to hole-pocket-driven superconductivity in these nominally electron-doped materials", "reveal hole superconductivity in the electron-doped high-temperature superconductors" "afte…
The angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) autocorrelation in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic-energy driven superconducting (SC) mechanism. It is shown that the strong electron correlation induces the electron Fermi surface (EFS) reconstruction, where the most of the quasiparticles locate at around the hot spots on EFS, and then these hot spots connected by the scattering wave vectors ${\bf q}_{i}$ construct an {\it octet} scattering model. In a striking analogy to the hole-doped case, the sharp ARPES autocorrelation peaks are directly corr…
The recent experiments revealed a remarkable possibility for the absence of the disparity between the phase diagrams of the electron- and hole-doped cuprate superconductors, while such an aspect should be also reflected in the dressing of the electrons. Here the phase diagram of the electron-doped cuprate superconductors and the related exotic features of the anisotropic dressing of the electrons are studied based on the kinetic-energy driven superconductivity. It is shown that although the optimized Tc in the electron-doped side is much smaller than that in the hole-doped case, the electron- …
The renormalization of the electrons in cuprate superconductors is characterized by the kink in the quasiparticle dispersion. Here the bilayer coupling effect on the quasiparticle dispersion kink in the electron-doped bilayer cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic-energy-driven superconductivity. It is shown that the kink in the quasiparticle dispersion is present all around the electron Fermi surface, as the quasiparticle dispersion kink in the single-layer case. However, in comparison with the corresponding single-layer case, the kink effect in the quasiparticle dispersion a…
A theoretical analysis is presented on possible effects of disorder by dopants in high-temperature superconducting cuprate perovskites, to define their basic spectra of spin and electronic excitations, and the subsequent observable properties, especially doping dependence of superconducting order parameter. The central point in the proposed physical picture is formation of specific impurity subband within the insulating bandgap of initial undoped material, serving as a source for the system metallization and further transition into superconducting state with anisotropic order parameter.
The physics of the pseudo-gap phase of high temperature cuprate superconductors has been an enduring mystery in the past thirty years. The ubiquitous presence of the pseudo-gap phase in under-doped cuprates suggests that its understanding holds a key in unraveling the origin of high temperature superconductivity. In this paper, we review various theoretical approaches to this problem, with a special emphasis on the concept of emergent symmetries in the under-doped region of those compounds. We differentiate the theories by considering a few fundamental questions related to the rich phenomenolo…
Although the cuprate high-temperature superconductors were discovered already 1986 the origin of the pairing mechanism remains elusive. While the doped compounds are superconducting with high transition temperatures $T_{c}$ the undoped compounds are insulating due to the strong effective Coulomb interaction between the Cu $3d$ holes. We investigate the dependence of the maximum superconducting transition temperature, $T_{c\text{ max}}$, on the onsite effective Coulomb interaction $U$ using the constrained random-phase approximation. We focus on the commonly used one-band model of the cuprates,…
We theoretically study ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations that are experimentally observed in the heavily overdoped region of cuprate superconductors. To explore the origin of FM fluctuations, we evaluate the spin susceptibilities of a single-band Hubbard model within the fluctuation exchange approximation. Model parameters are derived using the Wannierization technique and the constrained random phase approximation method based on the maximally localized Wannier functions. The constrained random phase approximation calculations reveal that the on-site Coulomb interaction decreases with an increa…
