The Krull filtration of the category of unstable modules over the Steenrod algebra

In the early 1990's, Lionel Schwartz gave a lovely characterization of the Krull filtration of U, the category of unstable modules over the mod p Steenrod algebra. Soon after, this filtration was used by the author as an organizational tool in posing and studying some topological nonrealization conjectures. In recent years the Krull filtration of U has been similarly used by Castellana, Crespo, and Scherer in their study of H--spaces with finiteness conditions, and Gaudens and Schwartz have given a proof of some of my conjectures. In light of these topological applications, it seems timely to better expose the algebraic properties of the Krull filtration.

On excess filtration on the Steenrod algebra

In this note, we study some properties of the filtration of the Steenrod algebra defined from the excess of admissible monomials. We give several conditions on a cocommutative graded Hopf algebra A^* which enable us to develop the theory of unstable A^*-modules.

Relating Postnikov pieces with the Krull filtration: A spin-off of Serre's theorem

We characterize H-spaces which are p-torsion Postnikov pieces of finite type by a cohomological property together with a necessary acyclicity condition. When the mod p cohomology of an H-space is finitely generated as an algebra over the Steenrod algebra we prove that its homotopy groups behave like those of a finite complex.

The graded algebra of Steenrod $q$th powers

The algebra ${\mathsf A}_q$ of Steenrod $q$th powers, where $q = p^e$ is a power of a prime $p$, is isomorphic to a subalgebra ${\mathsf A}'_q$ of the algebra of Steenrod $p$th powers ${\mathsf A}_p$. The filtration of ${\mathsf A}_p$ by powers of its augmentation ideal was studied by J. P. May in his Princeton thesis of 1964. Essential extensions, the nilpotent filtration and the Arone-Goodwillie tower

The spectral sequence associated to the Arone-Goodwillie tower for the n-fold loop space functor is used to show that the first two non-trivial layers of the nilpotent filtration of the reduced mod 2 cohomology of a (sufficiently connected) space with nilpotent cohomology are comparable. Sheaves of E-infinity algebras and applications to algebraic varieties and singular spaces

We describe the E-infinity algebra structure on the complex of singular cochains of a topological space, in the context of sheaf theory. As a first application, for any algebraic variety we define a weight filtration compatible with its E-infinity structure. The Lambda algebra and Sq_0

Adams filtration and generalized Hurewicz maps for infinite loopspaces

Steinberg Summands in the free $\mathbb{F}_p$-module on the Equivariant Sphere Spectrum

Let $G$ be a finite $p$-group. The Eilenberg-Maclane spectrum of the constant Mackey functor $\underline{\mathbb{F}}_p$, denoted $H\underline{\mathbb{F}}_p$, is modeled by the free $\mathbb{F}_p$-module on the $G$-equivariant sphere spectrum. The nilpotent filtration and the action of automorphisms on the cohomology of finite p--groups

We study H^*(P), the mod p cohomology of a finite p--group P, viewed as an Out(P)--module. In particular, we study the conjecture, first considered by Martino and Priddy, that, if e_S in Z/p[Out(P)] is a primitive idempotent associated to an irreducible Z/p[Out(P)]--module S, then the Krull dimension of e_SH^*(P) equals the rank of P.
