We have devised a general scheme that provides exact results for the scaling dimensions of all allowed in multi-channel Luttinger Liquids local perturbations. The technique developed provides universal description and establishes relations between scaling dimensions of perturbations in different phases of Luttinger Liquid. These multiple relations between scaling dimensions are universal. They are valid for all Luttinger Liquids with arbitrary current-current and density-density interactions. We have also established duality transformation between different subsets of Luttinger Liquid phases known for single-channel liquid as duality between weak link and weak scatterer limits.
We study electronic transport in a Luttinger liquid (LL) with an embedded impurity, which is either a weak scatterer (WS) or a weak link (WL), when interacting electrons are coupled to one-dimensional massless bosons (e.g., acoustic phonons). We find that the duality relation, $Δ_{ws}Δ_{wl}=1 $, between scaling dimensions of the electron backscattering in the WS and WL limits, established for the standard LL, holds in the presence of the additional coupling for an arbitrary fixed strength of boson scattering from the impurity. This means that at low temperatures such a system remains either an…
We address the problem of a Luttinger liquid with a scatterer that allows for both coherent and incoherent scattering channels. The asymptotic behavior at zero temperature is governed by a new stable fixed point: a Goldstone mode dominates the low energy dynamics, leading to a universal behavior. This limit is marked by equal probabilities for forward and backward scattering. Notwithstanding this non-trivial scattering pattern, we find that the shot noise as well as zero cross-current correlations vanish. We thus present a paradigmatic picture of an impurity in the Luttinger model, alternative…
We study the spin-dependent scattering of charge carriers in a magnetized one dimensional Luttinger liquid from a localized non-homogeneous magnetic field, which might be brought about by the stray field of magnetic tip near a uniform liquid, or by a transverse domain wall (DW) between two oppositely magnetized liquids. From a renormalization group treatment of the electron interactions we deduce scaling equations for the transmission and reflection amplitudes as the bandwidth is progressively reduced to an energy scale set by the temperature. The repulsive interactions dictate two possible ze…
Hidden duality and associated instabilities of the spinless Luttinger liquid on lattice are reported. The local quantum fluctuations and the long-distance chiral modes compete and as a result produce a hierarchy of exotic charge/density instabilities. Explicit bosonic quantum operators for the local density fluctuations are constructed and are used to make identification of the Luttinger liquid with the classical 2D Coulomb gas with $θ$-term and with the rich hidden duality.
We investigate rectification of a low-frequency ac bias in Y-junctions of one-channel Luttinger liquid wires with repulsive electron interaction. Rectification emerges due to three scatterers in the wires. We find that it is possible to achieve a higher rectification current in a Y-junction than in a single wire with an asymmetric scatterer at the same interaction strength and voltage bias. The rectification effect is the strongest in the absence of the time-reversal symmetry. In that case, the maximal rectification current can be comparable with the total current $\sim e^2V/h$ even for low vo…
We study the influence of electron-phonon coupling on electron transport through a Luttinger liquid with an embedded weak scatterer or weak link. We derive the renormalization group (RG) equations which indicate that the directions of RG flows can change upon varying either the relative strength of the electron-electron and electron-phonon coupling or the ratio of Fermi to sound velocities. This results in the rich phase diagram with up to three fixed points: an unstable one with a finite value of conductance and two stable ones, corresponding to an ideal metal or insulator.
We demonstrate the possibility to induce and control peculiar spin textures in a helical Luttinger liquid, by means of a time-dependent magnetic scatterer. The presence of a perturbation that breaks the time-reversal symmetry opens a gap in the spectrum, inducing single-particle backscattering and a peculiar spin response. We show that in the weak backscattering regime asymmetric spin textures emerge at the left and right side of the scatterer, whose spatial oscillations are controlled by the ratio between the magnetization frequency and the Fermi energy and by the electron interaction. This p…
The presence of electron-electron interactions in one dimension profoundly changes the properties of a system. The separation of charge and spin degrees of freedom is just one example. We consider what happens when a system consisting of a ferromagnetic region of non-collinearity, i.e. a domain wall, is coupled to interacting electrons in one-dimension (more specifically a Luttinger liquid). The ferromagnetism breaks spin charge separation and the presence of the domain wall introduces a spin dependent scatterer into the problem. The absence of spin charge separation and the effects of the ele…
We investigate the effect of both strong and weak potential scattering caused by local impurities and extended (line) defects in the array of Luttinger liquid wires. We find that in both cases a finite range inter-wire interaction stabilises metallic state. Based on calculation of the scaling dimensions of one-particle scattering operators, we construct the phase diagram for low-temperature transport along the array. We find that unlike local impurity case where only conducting and insulating states are realised (metal-insulator transition driven by interactions), the extended line defects may…
We prove an exact duality between the side-coupled and embedded geometries of a single level quantum dot attached to a quantum wire in a Luttinger liquid phase by a tunneling term and interactions. This is valid even in the presence of a finite bias voltage. Under this relation the Luttinger liquid parameter g goes into its inverse, and transmittance maps onto reflectance. We then demonstrate how this duality is revealed by the transport properties of the side-coupled case. Conductance is found to exhibit an antiresonance as a function of the level energy, whose width vanishes (enhancing trans…
We explore the life time of excitations in a dispersive Luttinger liquid. We perform a bosonization supplemented by a sequence of unitary transformations that allows us to treat the problem in terms of weakly interacting quasiparticles. The relaxation described by the resulting Hamiltonian is analyzed by bosonic and (after a refermionization) by fermionic perturbation theory. We show that the the fermionic and bosonic formulations of the problem exhibit a remarkable strong-weak-coupling duality. Specifically, the fermionic theory is characterized by a dimensionless coupling constant $λ= m^*l^2…
We study the properties of interacting electrons in a one-dimensional conduction band coupled to bulk non-collinear ferromagnetic order. The specific form of non-collinearity we consider is that of an extended domain wall. The presence of ferromagnetic order breaks spin-charge separation and the domain wall introduces a spin-dependent scatterer active over the length of the wall l. Both forward and backward scattering off the domain wall can be relevant perturbations of the Luttinger liquid and we discuss the possible low temperature phases. Our main finding is that backward scattering, while …
We investigate a one-dimensional electron liquid with two point scatterers of different strength. In the presence of electron interactions, the nonlinear conductance is shown to depend on the current direction. The resulting asymmetry of the transport characteristic gives rise to a ratchet effect, i.e., the rectification of a dc current for an applied ac voltage. In the case of strong repulsive interactions, the ratchet current grows in a wide voltage interval with decreasing ac voltage. In the regime of weak interaction the current-voltage curve exhibits oscillatory behavior. Our results appl…
We study a Luttinger Liquid (LL) coupled to a generic environment consisting of bosonic modes with arbitrary density-density and current-current interactions. The LL can be either in the conducting phase and perturbed by a weak scatterer or in the insulating phase and perturbed by a weak link. The environment modes can also be scattered by the imperfection in the system with arbitrary transmission and reflection amplitudes. We present a general method of calculating correlation functions under the presence of the environment and prove the duality of exponents describing the scaling of the weak…
We develop a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) method for quantum impurities coupled to interacting quantum wires described by a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The method is negative-sign free for any values of the Tomonaga-Luttinger parameter, which is rigorously proved, and thus, efficient low-temperature calculations are possible. Duality between electrons and bosons in one dimensional systems allows us to construct a simple formula for the CTQMC algorithm in these systems. We show that the CTQMC for Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids can be implemented with only minor modifications of previo…
We show that the Luttinger theorem, a robust feature of Fermi liquids, can be violated in non-Fermi liquids. We compute non-Fermi liquid Green functions using duality to black holes and find that the volume of the Fermi surface depends exponentially on the scaling dimension, which is a measure of the coupling. This demonstrates that Luttinger's theorem does not extend to non-Fermi liquids. We comment on possible experimental signatures.
In a recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 136401 (2012)] we have addressed the problem of a Luttinger liquid with a scatterer that allows for both coherent and incoherent scattering channels. We have found that the physics associated with this model is qualitatively different from the elastic impurity setup analyzed by Kane and Fisher, and from the inelastic scattering scenario studied by Furusaki and Matveev, thus proposing a new paradigmatic picture of Luttinger liquid with an impurity. Here we present an extensive study of the renormalization group flows for this problem, the fixed poin…
Non-equilibrium transport properties of charge and spin sector of two edges of a quantum spin Hall insulator are investigated theoretically in a four-terminal configuration. A simple duality relation between charge and spin sector is found for two helical Tomonaga Luttinger liquids (hTTLs) connected to non-interacting electron reservoirs. If the hTLLs on opposite edges are coupled locally or non-locally, the mixing between them yields interesting physics where spin information can be easily detected by a charge measurement and vice versa. Particularly, we show how a pure spin density in the ab…
We use a wave functional approach to calculate the fidelity of ground states in the Luttinger liquid universality class of one-dimensional gapless quantum many-body systems. The ground-state wave functionals are discussed using both the Schrodinger (functional differential equation) formulation and a path integral formulation. The fidelity between Luttinger liquids with Luttinger parameters K and K' is found to decay exponentially with system size, and to obey the symmetry F(K,K')=F(1/K,1/K') as a consequence of a duality in the bosonization description of Luttinger liquids.
In order to extend the Landauer formulation of quantum transport to correlated fermions, we consider a spinless system in which charge carriers interact, connected to two reservoirs by non-interacting one-dimensional leads. We show that the mapping of the embedded many-body scatterer onto an effective one-body scatterer with interaction-dependent parameters requires to include parts of the attached leads where the interacting region induces power law correlations. Physically, this gives a dependence of the conductance of a mesoscopic scatterer upon the nature of the used leads which is due to …
We demonstrate the equivalence between two distinct Luttinger liquid impurity problems. The first concerns a one-dimensional topological superconductor coupled at one end to the ends of two single channel Luttinger liquids. The second concerns a point contact in the quantum spin Hall effect, where four helical Luttinger liquids meet at a point. Both problems have been studied previously and exhibit several stable phases depending on the Luttinger parameter K, that can be characterized in terms of simple conformally invariant boundary conditions describing perfect normal (or Andreev) transmissi…
We explore the weak-strong-coupling Bose-Fermi duality in a model of a single-channel integer or fractional quantum Hall edge state with a finite-range interaction. The system is described by a chiral Luttinger liquid with non-linear dispersion of bosonic and fermonic excitations. We use the bosonization, a unitary transformation, and a refermionization to map the system onto that of weakly interacting fermions at low temperature $T$ or weakly interacting bosons at high $T$. We calculate the equilibration rate which is found to scale with temperature as $T^5$ and $T^{14}$ in the high-temperatu…
We study junctions of single-channel spinless Luttinger liquids using bosonisation. We generalize earlier studies by allowing the junction to be superconducting and find new charge non-conserving low energy fixed points. We establish the existence of $g \leftrightarrow 1/g$ duality (where $g$ is the Luttinger Liquid parameter) between the charge conserving (normal) junction and the charge non-conserving (superconducting) junction by evaluating and comparing the scaling dimensions of various operators around the fixed points in normal and superconducting sectors of the theory. For the most gene…
We use gauge-gravity duality to model the crossover from a conformal critical point to a confining Fermi liquid, driven by a change in fermion density. The short-distance conformal physics is represented by an anti-de Sitter geometry, which terminates into a confining state along the emergent spatial direction. The Luttinger relation, relating the area enclosed by the Fermi surfaces to the fermion density, is shown to follow from Gauss's Law for the bulk electric field. We argue that all low energy modes are consistent with Landau's Fermi liquid theory. An explicit solution is obtained for the…
We study the problem of resonant tunneling through a quantum dot in a spinful Luttinger liquid. For a range of repulsive interactions, we find that for symmetric barriers there exist resonances with a universal peak conductance $2g^* e^2/h$ that are controlled by a non-trivial intermediate fixed point. This fixed point is also a quantum critical point separating symmetry-protected topological phases. By tuning the system through resonance, all SPT phases can be accessed. For a particular interaction strength with Luttinger parameters $g_ρ=1/3$ and $g_σ=1$, we show that the problem is equivalen…
We study noise in the problem of tunneling between fractional quantum Hall edge states within a four probe geometry. We explore the implications of the strong-weak coupling duality symmetry existent in this problem for relating the various density-density auto-correlations and cross-correlations between the four terminals. We identify correlations that transform as either ``odd'' or ``anti-symmetric'', or ``even'' or ``symmetric'' quantities under duality. We show that the low frequency noise is colored, and that the deviations from white noise are exactly related to the differential conductan…
We give a unified overview of the zero temperature phases of compressible quantum matter: i.e. phases in which the expectation value of a globally conserved U(1) density, Q, varies smoothly as a function of parameters. Provided the global U(1) and translational symmetries are unbroken, such phases are expected to have Fermi surfaces, and the Luttinger theorem relates the volumes enclosed by these Fermi surfaces to <Q>. We survey models of interacting bosons and/or fermions and/or gauge fields which realize such phases. Some phases have Fermi surfaces with the singularities of Landau's Fermi li…
We perform a unitary renormalization group (URG) study of the 1D fermionic Hubbard model. The formalism generates a family of effective Hamiltonians and many-body eigenstates arranged holographically across the tensor network from UV to IR. The URG is realized as a quantum circuit, leading to the entanglement holographic mapping (EHM) tensor network description. A topological $Θ$-term of the projected Hilbert space of the degrees of freedom at the Fermi surface are shown to govern the nature of RG flow towards either the gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid or gapped quantum liquid phases. This r…
We study finite temperature transport in the Luttinger-Abrikosov-Beneslavskii phase -- an interacting, scale invariant, non-Fermi liquid phase found in quadratic semimetals. We develop a kinetic equation formalism to describe the d.c. transport properties, which are dominated by collisions, and compute the shear viscosity $η$. The ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density $η/s$ is a measure of the strength of interaction between the excitations of a quantum fluid. As a consequence of the quantum critical nature of the system, $η/ s$ is a universal number and we find it to be consistent with …
We show that the problem of impurity tunneling in a Luttinger liquid of electrons with spin is solvable in the spin isotropic case ($g_σ=2$, $g_ρ$ arbitrary). The resulting integrable model is similar to a two channel anisotropic Kondo model, but with the impurity spin in a "cyclic representation" of the quantum algebra $su(2)_q$ associated with the anisotropy. Using exact, non-perturbative techniques we study the RG flow, and compute the DC conductance. As expected from the analysis of Kane and Fisher we find that the IR fixed point corresponds to two separate leads. We also prove an exact du…
