We show that the number of supersymmetries of IIB black hole horizons is N=2 N_- + 2 index(D_λ), where index(D_λ) is the index of the Dirac operator twisted with the line bundle λ^{1/2} of IIB scalars, and N_- is the dimension of the kernel of a horizon Dirac operator which depends on IIB fluxes. Therefore, all IIB horizons preserve an even number of supersymmetries. In addition if the horizons have non-trivial fluxes and N_- is nonzero, then index(D_λ) is non-negative, and the horizons admit an sl(2,R) symmetry subalgebra. This provides evidence that all such horizons have an AdS/CFT dual. Furthermore if the orbits of sl(2,R) are two-dimensional, the IIB horizons are warped products AdS_2 X S.
We solve the Killing spinor equations for all near-horizon IIB geometries which preserve at least one supersymmetry. We show that generic horizon sections are 8-dimensional almost Hermitian spin${}_c$ manifolds. Special cases include horizon sections with a $Spin(7)$ structure and those for which the Killing spinor is pure. We also explain how the common sector horizons and the horizons with only 5-form flux are included in our general analysis. We investigate several special cases mainly focusing on the horizons with constant scalars admitting a pure Killing spinor and find that some of these…
We consider near horizon geometries of extremal black holes in six-dimensional type IIB supergravity. In particular, we use the entropy function formalism to compute the charges and thermodynamic entropy of these solutions. We also comment on the role of attractor mechanism in understanding the entropy of the Hopf T-dual solutions in type IIA supergravity.
We classify under some assumptions the IIB black hole horizons with 5-form flux preserving more than 2 supersymmetries. We find that the spatial horizon sections with non-vanishing flux preserving 4 supersymmetries are locally isometric either to S^1 * S^3 * T^4 or to S^1 * S^3 * K_3 and the associated near horizon geometries are locally isometric to AdS_3 * S^3 * T^4 and AdS_3 * S^3 * K_3$, respectively. The near horizon geometries preserving more than 4 supersymmetries are locally isometric to R^{1,1} * T^8.
We investigate the near horizon geometry of IIB supergravity black holes with non-vanishing 5-form flux preserving at least two supersymmetries. We demonstrate that there are three classes of solutions distinguished by the choice of Killing spinors. We find that the spatial horizon sections of the class of solutions with an SU(4) invariant pure Killing spinor are hermitian manifolds and admit a hidden Kahler with torsion (KT) geometry compatible with the SU(4) structure. Moreover the Bianchi identity of the 5-form, which also implies the field equations, can be expressed in terms of the torsio…
We construct new families of $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^2 \times \tilde S^2 \times S^1$ backgrounds fibred over a 2d Riemann surface in Type IIB string theory. These solutions are obtained by extracting the near-horizon limit of D3-brane box configurations, consisting on D3-D5-NS5 branes ending on D5'-NS5' background branes. We relate our families of solutions to previous $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^2 \times \text{CY}_2$ and $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^3 \times S^2$ solutions to Type IIA recently constructed in the literature. We construct explicit 2d quiver CFTs associated to the D3-…
We determine (p,q)-string and (p,q)-five brane solutions of type IIB supergravity using SL(2,Z)-symmetry of the full type IIB superstring theory. We also determine SL(2,Z)-transformed solution corresponding to the bound state of NS5-branes and fundamental strings. Then we analyze its near horizon limit and we show that it leads to the AdS(3)xS(3) with mixed fluxes.
Geometric Killing spinors which exist on AdS_{p+2} X S^{d-p-2} sometimes may be identified with supersymmetric Killing spinors. This explains the enhancement of unbroken supersymmetry near the p-brane horizon in d dimensions. The corresponding p-brane interpolates between two maximally supersymmetric vacua, at infinity and at the horizon. New case is studied here: p=0, d=5. The details of supersymmetric version of the very special geometry are presented. We find the area-entropy formula of the supersymmetric 5d black holes via the volume of S^3 which depends on charges and intersection matrix.
We show that the recent string theory embedding of a spacetime with nonrelativistic Schrodinger symmetry can be generalised to a twenty one dimensional family of solutions with that symmetry. Our solutions include IIB backgrounds with no three form flux turned on, and arise as near horizon limits of branewave spacetimes. We show that there is a hypersurface in the space of these theories where an instability appears in the gravitational description, indicating a phase transition in the nonrelativistic field theory dual. We also present simple embeddings of duals for nonrelativistic critical po…
We discuss a D3-D7 system in type IIB string theory. The near-horizon geometry is described by AdS^5 x X^5 where X^5 is a U(1) bundle over a Kahler-Einstein complex surface S with positive first Chern class c_1>0. The surface S can either be P^1 x P^1, P^2 or P_{n_1,...,n_k}, a blow up of P^2 at k points with 3\leq k\leq 8. The P^2 corresponds to the maximally supersymmetric AdS^5 x S^5 vacuum while the other cases lead to vacua with less supersymmetries. In the F-theory context they can be viewed as compactifications on elliptically fibered almost Fano 3-folds.
The adS_{p+2} x S^{d-p-2} geometry of the near horizon branes is promoted to a supergeometry: the solution of the supergravity constraints for the vielbein, connection and form superfields are found. This supergeometry can be used for the construction of new superconformal theories. We also discuss the Green-Schwarz action for a type IIB string on adS_5 x S_5.
We utilize the classification of IIB horizons with 5-form flux to present a unified description for the geometry of AdS_n, n=3,5,7 solutions. In particular, we show that all such backgrounds can be constructed from 8-dimensional 2-strong Calabi-Yau geometries with torsion which admit some additional isometries. We explore the geometry of AdS_3 and AdS_5 solutions but we do not find AdS_7 solutions.
Classical single centered solutions of $1/4$ BPS dyons in ${\cal N}=4$ theories are usually constructed in duality frames which contain non-trivial hair degrees of freedom localized outside the horizon. These modes are in addition to the fermionic zero modes associated with broken supersymmetry. Identifying and removing the hair from the $1/4$ BPS index allows us to isolate the degrees of freedom associated with the horizon. The spherical symmetry of the horizon then ensures that index of the horizon states has to be positive. We verify that this is indeed the case for the canonical example of…
We find out a PP-wave spacetime with constant Neveu-Schwarz (NS) three form flux by taking a Penrose limit on the 1+1 dimensional intersection of two orthogonal stacks of fivebranes in type IIB string theory. We further find out an intersecting (D1-D5)-brane solution in this background and analyze its supersymmetry properties by solving the dilatino and gravitino variations explicitly.
We consider the near-horizon geometry of supersymmetric extremal black holes in un-gauaged and gauged 5-dimensional supergravity, coupled to abelian vector multiplets. By analyzing the global properties of the Killing spinors, we prove that the near-horizon geometries undergo a supersymmetry enhancement. This follows from a set of generalized Lichnerowicz-type theorems we establish, together with an index theory argument. As a consequence, these solutions always admit a $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry group.
We investigate the existence of solutions with 16 supersymmetries to Type IIB supergravity on a spacetime of the form $AdS_{2}\times S^{5}\times S^{1}$ warped over a two-dimensional Riemann surface $Σ$. The existence of the Lie superalgebra $SU(1,1|4) \subset PSU(2,2|4)$, whose maximal bosonic subalgebra is $SO(2,1)\oplus SO(6)\oplus SO(2)$, motivates the search for half-BPS solutions with this isometry that are asymptotic to $AdS_{5} \times S^{5}$. We reduce the BPS equations to the Ansatz for the bosonic fields and supersymmetry generators compatible with these symmetries, then show that the…
We show that smooth type IIA Killing horizons with compact spatial sections preserve an even number of supersymmetries, and that the symmetry algebra of horizons with non-trivial fluxes includes an sl(2,R) subalgebra. This confirms the conjecture of [1] for type IIA horizons. As an intermediate step in the proof, we also demonstrate new Lichnerowicz type theorems for spin bundle connections whose holonomy is contained in a general linear group.
We show that near-horizon geometries of 11-dimensional supergravity preserve an even number of supersymmetries. The proof follows from Lichnerowicz type theorems for two horizon Dirac operators, the field equations and Bianchi identities, and the vanishing of the index of a Dirac operator on the 9-dimensional horizon sections. As a consequence of this, we also prove that all M-horizons with non-vanishing fluxes admit a sl(2,R) subalgebra of symmetries.
We prove that Killing horizons in massive IIA supergravity preserve an even number of supersymmetries, and that their symmetry algebra contains an $\mathfrak{sl}(2, R)$ subalgebra, confirming the conjecture of [5]. We also prove a new class of Lichnerowicz type theorems for connections of the spin bundle whose holonomy is contained in a general linear group.
The supersymmetry of near-horizon geometries in heterotic supergravity is considered. A necessary and sufficient condition for a solution to preserve more than the minimal N=2 supersymmetry is obtained. A supersymmetric near-horizon solution is constructed which is a U(1) fibration of AdS3 over a particular Aloff-Wallach space. It is proven that this solution preserves the conditions required for N=2 supersymmetry, but does not satisfy the necessary condition required for further supersymmetry enhancement. Hence, there exist supersymmetric near-horizon heterotic solutions preserving exactly N=…
We consider the supergravity dual of the N=1* theory at finite temperature by applying the Polchinski-Strassler construction to the black D3 brane solution of Type IIB supergravity. At finite temperature the 5-brane probe action is minimized when the probe falls to the horizon, although metastable minima with r>>r_H persist for a range of temperatures. Thermal effects on the 3-form source for the hypermultiplet mass m and its order m^2 back reaction on the other fields of the IIB theory are computed. We find unique solutions which are regular at the horizon and have the correct behavior on the…
In hep-th/0412322, Gaiotto, Strominger and Yin proposed a novel way of counting black hole microstates by counting the quantum mechanical ground states of probe branes placed in the near-horizon black hole background. We discuss the generalization of this proposal to the case of two-charge D0-D4 `small' black holes in type IIA. We also describe the construction of BPS D-brane probes in the near-horizon region of the 2-charge D1-D5 system in type IIB. Based on hep-th/0505176, hep-th/0607150.
This thesis is devoted to the study of dynamical symmetry enhancement of black hole horizons in string theory. In particular, we consider supersymmetric horizons in the low energy limit of string theory known as supergravity and we prove the $\textit{horizon conjecture}$ for a number of supergravity theories. We first give important examples of symmetry enhancement in $D=4$ and the mathematical preliminaries required for the analysis. Type IIA supergravity is the low energy limit of $D=10$ IIA string theory, but also the dimensional reduction of $D=11$ supergravity which itself the low energy …
We show that all smooth Killing horizons with compact horizon sections of 4-dimensional gauged N=2 supergravity coupled to any number of vector multiplets preserve $2 c_1({\cal K})+4 \ell$ supersymmetries, where ${\cal K}$ is a pull-back of the Hodge bundle of the special Kähler manifold on the horizon spatial section. We also demonstrate that all such horizons with $c_1({\cal K})=0$ exhibit an SL(2,R) symmetry and preserve either 4 or 8 supersymmetries. If the orbits of the SL(2,R) symmetry are 2-dimensional, the horizons are warped products of AdS2 with the horizon spatial section. Otherwise…
We study the conditions an arbitrary flux configuration must fulfill in order to construct a 4d space-time of the type $AdS_2\times S^2$ from a type IIB supergravity flux compactification in which NS-NS fluxes are included. We present a solution consisting on a compactification in the presence of 3-form NS-NS and RR fluxes. The internal manifold is a SU(3) structure six-dimensional manifold, with null curvature and with torsion. By preserving two supersymmetries in the four-dimensional low energy theory, we find a way to obtain the $AdS_2\times S^2$ geometry as a near-horizon solution by compa…
If more than one curvaton dominate the Universe at different epochs from each other, curvature perturbations can be temporarily enhanced to a value much larger than the observed one 10^{-5}. The traces of the enhancement may be left as higher order correlation functions, that is, as non-Gaussianity, the stochastic gravitational waves that are sourced by scalar-scalar mode couplings, as well as the primordial black holes that are formed by the gravitational collapse of the enhanced curvature perturbations. We first confirm that such a temporal enhancement indeed occurs by solving the linearized…
Standard thermodynamic treatments of quantum field theory in the presence of black-hole backgrounds reproduce the black hole entropy by usually specializing to the leading order of the heat-kernel or the high-temperature expansion. By contrast, this work develops a hybrid framework centered on geometric spectral asymptotics whereby these assumptions are shown to be unwarranted insofar as black hole thermodynamics is concerned. The approach--consisting of the concurrent use of near-horizon and heat-kernel asymptotic expansions--leads to a proof of the holographic scaling of the entropy as a uni…
We describe how to recover the quantum numbers of extremal black holes from their near horizon geometries. This is achieved by constructing the gravitational Noether-Wald charges which can be used for non-extremal black holes as well. These charges are shown to be equivalent to the U(1) charges of appropriately dimensionally reduced solutions. Explicit derivations are provided for 10 dimensional type IIB supergravity and 5 dimensional minimal gauged supergravity, with illustrative examples for various black hole solutions. We also discuss how to derive the thermodynamic quantities and their re…
We provide a classification of near-horizon geometries of supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black holes of five-dimensional U(1)^3-gauged supergravity which admit two rotational symmetries. We find three possibilities: a topologically spherical horizon, an S^1 \times S^2 horizon and a toroidal horizon. The near-horizon geometry of the topologically spherical case turns out to be that of the most general known supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black hole of U(1)^3-gauged supergravity. The other two cases have constant scalars and only exist in particular regions of thi…
We examine the supersymmetry of classical D-brane and M-brane configurations and explain the dependence of Killing spinors on coordinates. We find that one half supersymmetry is broken in the bulk and that supersymmetry near the D-brane horizon is restored for $p\leq 3$, for solutions in the stringy frame, but only for $p=3$ in the10d canonical frame. We study the enhancement for the case of four intersecting D-3-branes in 10 dimensions and the implication of this for the size of the infinite throat of the near horizon geometry in non-compactified theory. We found some indications of universal…
Any spacetime containing a degenerate Killing horizon, such as an extremal black hole, possesses a well-defined notion of a near-horizon geometry. We review such near-horizon geometry solutions in a variety of dimensions and theories in a unified manner. We discuss various general results including horizon topology and near-horizon symmetry enhancement. We also discuss the status of the classification of near-horizon geometries in theories ranging from vacuum gravity to Einstein-Maxwell theory and supergravity theories. Finally, we discuss applications to the classification of extremal black h…
We explore fermionic T-duality and self-duality in the geometry AdS3 x S3 x T4 in type IIB supergravity. We explicitly construct the Killing spinors and the fermionic T-duality isometries and show that the geometry is self-dual under a combination of two bosonic AdS3 T-dualities, four fermionic T-dualities and either two additional T-dualities along T4 or two T-dualities along S3. In addition, we show that the presence of a B-field acts as an obstacle to self-duality, a property attributable to S- duality and fermionic T-duality not commuting. Finally, we argue that fermionic T-duality may be …
The large N limit of D3-branes is expected to correspond to a superconformal field theory living on the boundary of the anti-de Sitter space appearing in the near-horizon geometry. Dualizing the D3-brane to a D-instanton, we show that this limit is equivalent to a type IIB S-duality. In both cases one effectively reaches the near-horizon geometry. This provides an alternative approach to an earlier derivation of the same result that makes use of the properties of a gravitational wave instead of the D-instanton.
We consider supersymmetric near-horizon geometries in heterotic supergravity up to two loop order in sigma model perturbation theory. We identify the conditions for the horizons to admit enhancement of supersymmetry. We show that solutions which undergo supersymmetry enhancement exhibit an sl(2,R) symmetry, and we describe the geometry of their horizon sections. We also prove a modified Lichnerowicz type theorem, incorporating $α'$ corrections, which relates Killing spinors to zero modes of near-horizon Dirac operators. Furthermore, we demonstrate that there are no AdS2 solutions in heterotic …
This paper is devoted to the study of the effective field theory description of the probe D1-brane in the background of the system of two stacks of fivebranes in type IIB theory that intersect on $R^{1,1}$. We study the properties of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action for D1-brane moving in this background. We will argue that this action is invariant under an additional symmetry in the near horizon limit and that this new symmetry is closely related to the enhanced symmetry of the I-brane background considered recently in [hep-th/0508025]. We also solve explicitly the equation of motion of D1-brane …
In this paper we discuss the construction of non-geometric Q- and R-branes as sources of non-geometric Q- and R-fluxes in string compactifications. The non-geometric Q-branes, being obtained via T-duality from the NS 5-brane or respectively from the KK-monopole, are still local solutions of the standard NS action, where however the background fields G and B possess non-geometric global monodromy properties. We show that using double field theory, redefined background fields tilde G and beta as well as their corresponding effective action, the Q-branes are locally and globally well behaved solu…
We consider Type IIB Neveu-Schwarz five-branes transverse to C^2/Z_n orbifolds and conjecture that string theory on the near horizon geometry is dual to the decoupled theory on the branes. We analyze the conformal field theory describing the near horizon region and the world volume non-critical string theory. The modular invariance consistency condition of string theory is exactly reproduced as the gauge anomaly cancellation condition in the little string theories. We comment on aspects of the holographic nature of this duality.
In this paper we study a class of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs with ADE global symmetry defined via Type IIB compactification on a class of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^3\times\mathbb{C}^*$. These can also be constructed by compactifying the 6d (2,0) theory of type ADE on a sphere with an irregular and a full punctures. When we couple to the ADE moment map a chiral multiplet in the adjoint representation and turn on a (principal) nilpotent vev for it, all the theories in this family display enhancement of supersymmetry in the infrared. We observe that all known examples of lagrangian theories which f…
BPS electric and magnetic black hole solutions which break half of supersymmetry in the theory of N=2 five-dimensional supergravity are discussed. For models which arise as compactifications of M-theory on a Calabi-Yau manifold, these solutions correspond, respectively, to the two and five branes wrapping around the homology cycles of the Calabi-Yau compact space. The electric solutions are reviewed and the magnetic solutions are constructed. The near-horizon physics of these solutions is examined and in particular the phenomenon of the enhancement of supersymmetry. The solutions for the super…
We classify the necessary and sufficient conditions to obtain the near-horizon geometry of extremal supersymmetric rotating black holes embedded in 11d supergravity. Such rotating black holes admit an AdS$_2$ near-horizon geometry which is fibered by the transverse spacetime directions. Despite their clear interest to understanding the entropy of rotating black holes, these solutions have evaded all previous supersymmetric classification programs due to the non-trivial fibration structure. In this paper we allow for the most general fibration over AdS$_2$ with a flux configuration permitting r…
We solve the worldsheet theory describing the near-horizon dynamics of a D-string in the presence of a very large number N of D5-branes. The model is pre-geometric in the sense that the near-horizon worldsheet Lagrangian does not have dynamical fields associated with the dimensions transverse to the D5-branes. The solution at large N is shown to be given by a classical action for the D-string moving in a curved ten-dimensional spacetime. The four dimensions transverse to the D5-branes emerge from the quantum loops of the original strongly coupled quantum worldsheet field theory. By comparing w…
Associated to every stationary extremal black hole is a unique near-horizon geometry, itself a solution of the field equations. These latter spacetimes are more tractable to analyze and most importantly, retain properties of the original black hole which are intrinsic to the event horizon. After reviewing general features of near-horizon geometries, such as SO(2,1) symmetry enhancement, I report on recent work on stationary, charged extremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions and present a classification of near-horiz…
Kaigorodov spaces arise, after spherical compactification, as near horizon limits of M2, M5, and D3-branes with a particular pp-wave propagating in a world volume direction. We show that the uncompactified near horizon configurations K\times S are solutions of D=11 or D=10 IIB supergravity which correspond to perturbed versions of their AdS \times S analogues. We derive the Penrose-Gueven limits of the Kaigorodov space and the total spaces and analyse their symmetries. An Inonu-Wigner contraction of the Lie algebra is shown to occur, although there is a symmetry enhancement. We compare the res…
Using higher order corrections we argue that five dimensional N=2 and N=4 small black holes exhibit supersymmetry enhancement in near horizon geometry leading to eight and sixteen supercharges, respectively. Using this enhancement at supergravity level we can identify the global supergroup of the near horizon geometry. In particular we show how this supergroup distinguishes between small and large black holes in N=2 case.
Certain limits of the duality between M-theory on ${T^5/Z_2}$ and IIB on K3 are analyzed in Matrix theory. The correspondence between M-theory five-branes and ALE backgrounds is realized as three dimensional mirror symmetry. Non-critical strings dual to open membranes are explicitly described as gauge theory excitations. We also comment on Type IIA on K3 and the appearance of gauge symmetry enhancement at special points in the moduli space.
We construct the type IIB supergravity solutions describing D3-branes ending on 5-branes, in the near-horizon limit of the D3-branes. Our solutions are holographically dual to the 4d N=4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on a half-line, at large N and large 't Hooft coupling, with various boundary conditions that preserve half of the supersymmetry. The solutions are limiting cases of the general solutions with the same symmetries constructed in 2007 by D'Hoker, Estes and Gutperle. The classification of our solutions matches exactly with the general classification of boundary conditions for D…
In 1987 two versions of the brane-scan of D-dimensional super p-branes were put forward. The first pinpointed those (p,D) slots consistent with kappa-symmetric Green-Schwarz type actions; the second generalized the "membrane at the end of the universe" idea to all those superconformal groups describing p-branes on the boundary of AdS_{p+2} x S^{D-p-2}. Although the second version predicted D3 and M5 branes in addition to those of the first, it came unstuck because the 1/2 BPS solitonic branes failed to exhibit the required symmetry enhancement in the near-horizon limit, except in the non-dilat…
We study the near horizon geometry of generic Killing horizons constructing suitable coordinates and taking the appropriate scaling limit. We are able to show that the geometry will always show an enhancement of symmetries, and, in the extremal case, will develop a causally disconnected "throat" as expected. We analyze the implications of this to the Kerr/CFT conjecture and the attractor mechanism. We are also able to construct a set of special (pure) spinors associated with the horizon structure using their interpretation as maximally isotropic planes. The structure generalizes the usual redu…
For the five dimensional N=2 black rings, we study the supersymmetry enhancement and identify the global supergroup of the near horizon geometry. We show that the global part of the supergroup is OSp(4*|2)X U(1) which is similar to the small black string. We show that results obtained by applying the entropy function formalism, the c-extremization approach and the Brown-Henneaux method to the black ring solution are in agreement with the microscopic entropy calculation.
We reconsider the enhancement of primordial gravitational waves that arises from a quantum gravitational model of inflation. A distinctive feature of this model is that the end of inflation witnesses a brief phase during which the Hubble parameter oscillates in sign, changing the usual Hubble friction to anti-friction. An earlier analysis of this model was based on numerically evolving the graviton mode functions after guessing their initial conditions near the end of inflation. The current study is based on an equation which directly evolves the normalized square of the magnitude. We are also…
The main focus of this lecture is on extended objects in adS*S bosonic backgrounds with unbroken supersymmetry. The backgrounds are argued to be exact, special consideration are given to the non-maximal supersymmetry case. The near horizon superspace construction is explained. The superconformal symmetry appears in the worldvolume actions as the superisometry of the near horizon superspace, like the superPoincare symmetry of GS superstring and BST supermembrane in the flat superspace. The issues in gauge fixing of local kappa-symmetry are reviewed. We describe the features of the gauge-fixed I…
It has been proven in arXiv:1303.0853 that all regular supersymmetric near-horizon geometries in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity admit automatic supersymmetry enhancement. Using this result, the integrability conditions associated with the existence of the additional supersymmetry are analysed, and the near-horizon geometries are determined explicitly. We show that they all correspond to previously constructed examples. Hence, there are no supersymmetric black ring solutions in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity.
