We present optical integral field unit (IFU) observations of two gas pillars surrounding the Galactic young massive star cluster NGC 3603. The high S/N and spectral resolution of these data have allowed us to accurately quantify the H-alpha, [NII] and [SII] emission line shapes, and we find a mixture of broad (FWHM~70-100 km/s) and narrow (<50 km/s) components. The broad components are found close to the edges of both pillars, suggesting that they originate in turbulent mixing layers (TMLs) driven by the effect of the star cluster wind. Both pillars exhibit surprisingly high ionized gas densities of >10000 cm-3. In one pillar we found that these high densities are only found in the narrow component, implying it must originate from deeper within the pillar than the broad component. From this, together with our kinematical data, we conclude that the narrow component traces a photoevaporation flow, and that the TML forms at the interface with the hot wind. On the pillar surfaces we find a consistent offset in radial velocity between the narrow (brighter) components of H-alpha and [NII] of ~5-8 km/s, for which we were unable to find a satisfactory explanation. We urge the theoretical community to simulate mechanical and radiative cloud interactions in more detail to address the many unanswered questions raised by this study.
We present a set of treatment techniques for GMOS/IFU data cubes, including: correction of the differential atmospheric refraction; Butterworth spatial filtering, to remove high spatial-frequency noise; instrumental fingerprint removal; Richardson-Lucy deconvolution, to improve the spatial resolution of the observations. A comparison with HST images shows that the treatment techniques preserve the morphology of the spatial structures in the data cubes, without introducing distortions or ghost features. The treatment procedure applied to the data cube of the central region of the late-type gala…
We present a detailed analysis of the ionised gas distribution and kinematics in the inner ~ 200 pc of NGC 4546, host of a Low Luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus (LLAGN). Using GMOS-IFU observations, with a spectral coverage of 4736-6806 A and an angular resolution of 0.7 arcsec, we confirm that the nuclear emission is consistent with photoionisation by an AGN, while the gas in the circumnuclear region may be ionised by hot low-mass evolved stars. The gas kinematics in the central region of NGC 4546 presents three components: (i) a disc with major axis oriented along a position angle of 43deg …
[abridged] We present optical integral field unit observations (VLT/VIMOS-IFU and WIYN/SparsePak), and associated archival deep Halpha imaging (ESO 2.2m WFI), of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253. With VIMOS we observed the nuclear region and southern superwind outflow in detail with five pointings, and with SparsePak we observed two partially overlapping regions covering the central disk and northern halo. The high signal-to-noise of the data and spectral resolution (80-90 km/s) enable us to accurately decompose the emission line profiles into multiple components. The combination of these da…
We present MUSE Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of five individual HII regions in two giant (>100 pc in radius) star-forming complexes in the low-metallicity ($Z$~0.33 $Z_{\odot}$) nearby (D ~ 2 Mpc) dwarf spiral galaxy NGC 300. We combine the IFU data with high spatial resolution HST photometry to demonstrate the extraction of stellar spectra and the classification of individual stars from ground-based data at the distance of 2 Mpc. For the two star-forming complexes, in which no O-type stars had previously been identified, we find a total of 13 newly identified O-type stars in the mas…
We recently reported the discovery of a candidate jet-driving microquasar (S10) in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 300. However, in the absence of kinematic information, we could not reliably determine the jet power or the dynamical age of the jet cavity. Here, we present optical MUSE integral field unit (IFU) observations of S10, which reveal a bipolar line-emitting jet structure surrounding a continuum-emitting central source. The optical jet lobes of S10 have a total extent of $\sim$ 40 pc and a shock velocity of $\sim$ 150 km s$^{-1}$. Together with the jet kinematics, we exploit the MUSE cov…
NGC7252, which is one of the nearest major-merger galaxy remnants, is an ideal laboratory to study the processes inherent to the transformation of disc galaxies to ellipticals as observed about ~1Gyr after the collision. We obtained wide-field IFU spectroscopy with the VLT-VIMOS integral-field spectrograph covering the central 50"x50" of NGC7252 to map the stellar and ionised gas kinematics, and the distribution and conditions of the ionised gas, revealing the extent of ongoing star formation and recent star formation history. We find that the inner gas disc is not counter-rotating with respec…
NGC 1313 is a bulgeless nearby galaxy, classified as SB(s)d. Its proximity allows high spatial resolution observations. We performed the first detailed analysis of the emission-line properties in the nuclear region of NGC 1313, using an optical data cube obtained with the Gemini Multi-object Spectrograph. We detected four main emitting areas, three of them (regions 1, 2 and 3) having spectra typical of H II regions. Region 1 is located very close to the stellar nucleus and shows broad spectral features characteristic of Wolf-Rayet stars. Our analysis revealed the presence of one or two WC4-5 s…
NGC 3393, a nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy with nuclear radio jets, large-scale and nuclear bars, and a posited secondary super massive black hole, provides an interesting laboratory to test the physics of inflows and outflows. Here we present and analyse the molecular gas (ALMA observations of CO J:2-1 emission over a field of view (FOV) of 45\arcsec \times 45\arcsec, at 0\farcs56 (143 pc) spatial and 5 km/s spectral resolution), ionised gas and stars (GEMINI-GMOS/IFU; over a FOV of 4\arcsec \times 5\arcsec, at 0\farcs62 (159 pc) spatial and 23 km/s spectral resolution) in NGC 3393. The ionised gas …
In the optical spectra of galaxies, methods for the separation of line emission arising from star formation and an additional hard component, such as shocks or AGN, is well-understood and possible with current diagnostics. However, such diagnostics fail when attempting to separate and define line emission which arises from shocked gas, and that arising from AGN. We present a new three-dimensional diagnostic diagram for IFU data which can simultaneously separate the line emission amongst star formation, shocks, and AGN within a galaxy. We show that regions we define as AGN-dominated correlate w…
We present our analysis of high-resolution (R $\sim$ 20 000) GTC/MEGARA integral-field unit spectroscopic observations, obtained during the commissioning run, in the inner region (12.5 arcsec x 11.3 arcsec) of the active galaxy NGC7469, at spatial scales of 0.62 arcsec. We explore the kinematics, dynamics, ionisation mechanisms and oxygen abundances of the ionised gas, by modelling the H$α$-[NII] emission lines at high signal-to-noise (>15) with multiple Gaussian components. MEGARA observations reveal, for the first time for NGC7469, the presence of a very thin (20 pc) ionised gas disc support…
We present IFU observations with MUSE@VLT and deep imaging with FORS@VLT of a dwarf galaxy recently formed within the giant collisional HI ring surrounding NGC 5291. This TDG-like object has the characteristics of typical z=1-2 gas-rich spiral galaxies: a high gas fraction, a rather turbulent clumpy ISM, the absence of an old stellar population, a moderate metallicity and star formation efficiency. The MUSE spectra allow us to determine the physical conditions within the various complex substructures revealed by the deep optical images, and to scrutinize at unprecedented spatial resolution the…
We present a two-dimensional mapping of the gas flux distributions, as well as of the gas and stellar kinematics in the inner 220 pc of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2110, using K-band integral field spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini NIFS at a spatial resolution of ~24pc and spectral resolution of ~40 km/s. The H2 emission extends over the whole field-of-view and is attributed to heating by X-rays from the AGN and/or by shocks, while the Brgamma emission is restricted to a bi-polar region extending along the South-East-North-West direction. The masses of the warm molecular gas and of the ionized …
We use integral field spectroscopic (IFS) observations from the Gemini North Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS-N) to study the central H II region in a nearby blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy NGC 4449. The IFS data enable us to explore the variation of physical and chemical conditions of the star-forming region and the surrounding gas on spatial scales as small as 5.5 pc. Our kinematical analysis shows possible signatures of shock ionisation and shell structures in the surroundings of the star-forming region. The metallicity maps of the region, created using direct T$_e$ and indirect strong line …
[abridged] We present observations of NGC524 and NGC2549 with LGS AO obtained at GEMINI North telescope using the NIFS IFU in the K band. The purpose of these observations, together with previously obtained observations with the SAURON IFU, is to determine the masses (Mbh) of the supermassive black holes (SMBH). The targeted galaxies were chosen to have central light profiles showing a core (NGC524) and a cusp (NGC2549), to probe the feasibility of using the galaxy centre as the NGS required for LGS AO. We employ an innovative `open loop' technique. The data have spatial resolution of 0.23" an…
Disky bulges in spiral galaxies are commonly thought to form out of disk materials (mainly) via bar driven secular processes, they are structurally and dynamically distinct from `classical bulges' built in violent merger events. We use high-resolution GTC/MEGARA integral-field unit spectroscopic observations of the Sa galaxy NGC 7025, obtained during the MEGARA commissioning run, together with detailed 1D and 2D decompositions of this galaxy's SDSS $i$-band data to investigate the formation of its disky (bulge) component which makes up $\sim 30\%$ of the total galaxy light. With a Sérsic index…
NGC 7582 is an SB(s)ab galaxy which displays evidences of simultaneous nuclear activity and star formation in its centre. Previous optical observations revealed, besides the H II regions, an ionization cone and a gas disc in its central part. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images in both optical and infrared bands show the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and a few compact structures that are possibly associated with young stellar clusters. In order to study in detail both the AGN and evidence for star formation, we analyse optical (Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph) and near-infrared (Spectrograph …
We present optical/near-IR IFU observations of a gas pillar in the Galactic HII region NGC 6357 containing the young open star cluster Pismis 24. These observations have allowed us to examined in detail the gas conditions of the strong wind-clump interactions taking place on its surface. We identify the presence of a narrow (~20 km/s) and broad (50-150 km/s) component to the H_alpha emission line, where the broadest broad component widths are found in a region that follows the shape of the eastern pillar edge. These connections have allowed us to firmly associate the broad component with emiss…
We aim to map the distribution and kinematics of molecular and ionized gas in a sample of active galaxies, to quantify the nuclear inflows and outflows. Here, we analyze the nuclear kinematics of NGC 1566 via ALMA observations of the CO J:2-1 emission at 24 pc spatial and $\sim$2.6 km s$^{-1}$ spectral resolution, and Gemini-GMOS/IFU observations of ionized gas emission lines and stellar absorption lines at similar spatial resolution, and 123 km s$^{-1}$ of intrinsic spectral resolution. The morphology and kinematics of stellar, molecular (CO) and ionized ([N II]) emission lines are compared t…
Mrk 71/NGC 2366 is the closest Green Pea (GP) analog and candidate Lyman Continuum (LyC) emitter. Recently, 11 LyC-leaking GPs have been detected through direct observations of the ionizing continuum, making this the most abundant class of confirmed LyC-emitters at any redshift. High resolution, multi-wavelength studies of GPs can lead to an understanding of the method(s), through which LyC escapes from these galaxies. The proximity of Mrk 71/NCG 2366 offers unprecedented detail on the inner workings of a GP analog, and enables us to identify the mechanisms of LyC escape. We use 5825-7650Å int…

We here report the detection of extended HeII4686 nebular emission in the central region of NGC1569 using the integral field spectrograph MEGARA at the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias. The observations cover a Field of View (FoV) of 12.5 arcsec x 11.3 arcsec at seeing-limited spatial resolution of ~15 pc and at a spectral resolution of R=6000 in the wavelength range 4330--5200 Angstrom. The emission extends over a semi-circular arc of ~40 pc width and ~150 pc diameter around the super star cluster A (SSC-A). The Av derived using Balmer decrement varies from the Galactic value of 1.6 mag to a m…
NGC~6946, also known as the `Fireworks' galaxy, is an unusual galaxy that hosts a total of 225 supernova remnant (SNR) candidates, including 147 optically identified with high [SII]/Ha line ratios. In addition, this galaxy shows prominent HI holes, which were analyzed in previous studies. Indeed, the connection between SNRs and HI holes together with their physical implications in the surrounding gas is worth of attention. This paper explores the connection between the SNRs and the HI holes, including an analysis of their physical link to observational optical properties inside and around the …
We present near-IR JH spectra of the central regions of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1569 using the Florida Image Slicer for Infrared Cosmology and Astrophysics (FISICA). The dust-penetrating properties and available spectral features of the near-IR, combined with the integral field unit (IFU) capability to take spectra of a field, make FISICA an ideal tool for this work. We use the prominent [He I] (1.083μm) and Paβ(1.282 μm) lines to probe the dense star forming regions as well as characterize the general star forming environment around the super star clusters (SSCs) in NGC 1569. We find […
We present Gemini-S/GMOS-IFU optical spectroscopy of four regions near the centre of the nearby (3.8 Mpc) dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 5253. This galaxy is famous for hosting a radio supernebula containing two deeply embedded massive super star clusters, surrounded by a region of enhanced nitrogen abundance that has been linked to the presence of WR stars. We detected 11 distinct sources of red WR bump (CIV) emission over a 20" (~350 pc) area, each consistent with the presence of ~1 WCE-type star. WC stars are not found coincident with the supernebula, although WN stars have previously been dete…
Distance uncertainties plague our understanding of the physical scales relevant to the physics of star formation in extragalactic studies. The planetary nebulae luminosity function (PNLF) is one of very few techniques that can provide distance estimates to within ~10%, however it requires a planetary nebula (PN) sample that is uncontaminated by other ionizing sources. We employ optical IFU spectroscopy using MUSE on the VLT to measure [OIII] line fluxes for sources unresolved on 50 pc scales within the central star-forming galaxy disk of NGC 628. We use diagnostic line ratios to identify 62 PN…
Using archival HST/WFC3 images centered on the young HD 97950 star cluster in the giant HII region NGC 3603, we computed the pixel-to-pixel distribution of the color excess, E(B-V)g, of the gas associated with this cluster from its H_alpha/Pa_beta flux ratio. At the assumed distance of 6.9 kpc, the resulting median color excess within 1 pc from the cluster center is E(B-V)g =1.51 \pm 0.04 mag. Outside the cluster (at r > 1 pc), the color excess is seen to increase with cluster-centric distance towards both North and South, reaching a value of about 2.2 mag at r = 2 pc from the cluster center. …

Gas inflowing along stellar bars is often stalled at the location of circumnuclear rings, that form an effective reservoir for massive star formation and thus shape the central regions of galaxies. However, how exactly star formation is proceeding within these circumnuclear starburst rings is subject of debate. Two main scenarios for this process have been put forward: In the first the onset of star formation is regulated by the total amount of gas present in the ring with star forming starting once a mass threshold has reached in a `random' position within the ring like `popcorn'. In the seco…
We present the analysis of the full bi-dimensional optical spectral cube of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5668, observed with the PPAK IFU at the Calar Alto observatory 3.5m telescope. We make use of broad-band imaging to provide further constraints on the evolutionary history of the galaxy. This dataset will allow us to improve our understanding of the mechanisms that drive the evolution of disks. We investigated the properties of 62 H II regions and concentric rings in NGC 5668 and derived maps in ionized-gas attenuation and chemical (oxygen) abundances. We find that, while inwards of r\,$\si…
We demonstrate a robust method of resolving the star-formation and AGN contributions to emission lines using two very well known AGN systems: NGC 1365, and NGC 1068, using the high spatial resolution data from the TYPHOON/PrISM survey. We expand the previous method of calculating the AGN fraction by using theoretical-based model grids rather than empirical points. The high spatial resolution of the TYPHOON/PrISM observations show evidence of both star formation and AGN activity occurring in the nuclei of the two galaxies. We rebin the data to the lower resolutions, typically found in other int…
GMOS-IFU observational data were used to study the detailed two dimensional gas kinematics and morphological structures within the ~500x421 pc^2 of the active Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4501. We provide empirical evidences of possible outflowing material from the central zones of NGC 4501 to the observer. In addition, we performed a spectral synthesis and diagnostic diagram analysis to determine respectively the dominant stellar population in the inner disc of this galaxy and to unveil the actual nature of the central engine of NGC 4501. The principal finding of this work is that the central regions…
We explore the warm molecular and ionized gas in the centers of two megamaser disk galaxies using K-band spectroscopy. Our ultimate goal is to determine how gas is funneled onto the accretion disk, here traced by megamaser spots on sub-pc scales. We present NIR IFU data with a resolution of ~50 pc for two galaxies: NGC 4388 with VLT/SINFONI and NGC 1194 with Keck/OSIRIS+AO. The high spatial resolution and rich spectral diagnostics allow us to study both the stellar and gas kinematics as well as gas excitation on scales only an order of magnitude larger than the maser disk. We find a drop in th…
We present an analysis of the effect of feedback from O- and B-type stars with data from the integral field spectrograph MUSE mounted on the Very Large Telescope of pillar-like structures in the Carina Nebular Complex, one of the most massive star-forming regions in the Galaxy. For the observed pillars, we compute gas electron densities and temperatures maps, produce integrated line and velocity maps of the ionised gas, study the ionisation fronts at the pillar tips, analyse the properties of the single regions, and detect two ionised jets originating from two distinct pillar tips. For each pi…

In recent years, Circumnuclear Star Forming Regions (CNSFRs) have been studied in different frequencies and telescopes, diverse studies about connection between nuclear activity and star formation in the CNSFRs were doing using optical data, IFS and models. We obtain data of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 at J band between 1.35-1.32$μ$ using the 8.1m Gemini telescope and GNIRS IFU mode. We found the radial velocity and intensity maps for [FeII]$λ$12570, Pa$β$ $λ$12814 and FeII $λ$13201 lines of all the components. The gas emission has a double origin associated with photoionization by young sta…
I present an overview of our ongoing project aimed at building a new generation of velocity dispersion profiles ad rotation curves for a representative sample of Galactic globular clusters, from the the radial velocity of hundreds individual stars distributed at different distances from the cluster center. The innermost portion of the profiles will be used to constrain the possibile presence of intermediate-mass black holes. The adopted methodology consists in combining spectroscopic observations acquired with three different instruments at the ESO-VLT: the adaptive-optics assisted, integral f…
We used FORS2 in MXU mode to mimic a coarse 'IFU' in order to measure the 3D large-scale kinematics around the central Hydra I cluster galaxy NGC 3311. Our data show that the velocity dispersion field varies as a function of radius and azimuthal angle and violates point symmetry. Also, the velocity field shows similar dependence, hence the stellar halo of NGC 3311 is a dynamically young structure. The kinematic irregularities coincide in position with a displaced diffuse halo North-East of NGC 3311 and with tidal features of a group of disrupting dwarf galaxies. This suggests that the superpos…
We present detailed morphological, photometric, and stellar-kinematic analyses of the central regions of two massive, early-type barred galaxies with nearly identical large-scale morphologies. Both have large, strong bars with prominent inner photometric excesses that we associate with boxy/peanut-shaped (B/P) bulges; the latter constitute ~ 30% of the galaxy light. Inside its B/P bulge, NGC 4608 has a compact, almost circular structure (half-light radius R_e approx. 310 pc, Sérsic n = 2.2) we identify as a classical bulge, amounting to 12.1% of the total light, along with a nuclear star clust…
We report the discovery of ancient massive merger events in the early-type galaxies NGC 1380 and NGC 1427, members of the Fornax galaxy cluster. Both galaxies have been observed by the MUSE IFU instrument on the VLT, as part of the Fornax3D project. By fitting recently-developed population-orbital superposition models to the observed surface brightness as well as stellar kinematic, age, and metallicity maps, we obtain the stellar orbits, age and metallicity distributions of each galaxy. We then decompose each galaxy into multiple orbital-based components, including a dynamically hot inner stel…

NGC 3311, the central galaxy of the Hydra I cluster, shows signatures of recent infall of satellite galaxies from the cluster environment. Previous work has shown that the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of the stars and globular clusters in the extended halo of NGC 3311 rises up to the value of the cluster velocity dispersion. We performed multi-object spectroscopic observations of the diffuse stellar halo of NGC 3311 using VLT/FORS2 in MXU mode to mimic a coarse `IFU'. We use pPXF to extract the kinematic information. We find a homogeneous velocity and velocity dispersion field within r<10…
Most massive galaxies show emission lines that can be characterized as LINERs. To what extent this emission is related to AGNs or to stellar processes is still an open question. In this paper, we analysed a sample of such galaxies to study the central region in terms of nuclear and circumnuclear emission lines, as well as the stellar component properties. For this reason, we selected 10 massive ($σ$ > 200 km/s) nearby (d < 31 Mpc) galaxies and observed them with the IFU/GMOS (integral field unit/Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph) spectrograph on the Gemini South Telescope. The data were analyse…
Information on the star-formation histories of cD galaxies and their extended stellar haloes lie in their spectra. Therefore, to determine whether these structures evolved together or through a two-phase formation, we need to spectroscopically separate the light from each component. We present a pilot study to use BUDDI to fit and extract the spectra of the cD galaxy NGC 3311 and its halo in an Integral Field Spectroscopy datacube, and carry out a simple stellar populations analysis to study their star-formation histories. Using MUSE data, we were able to isolate the light of the galaxy and it…
Many Early-type galaxies (ETG) have ionized gas emission in their centres that extends to scales of ~ 1kpc. The majority of such objects are classified as LINERs, but the nature of their ionizing source is still not clear. The kinematics associated with these gaseous structures usually shows deviations from a pure rotational motion due to non-gravitational effects or to non-axisymmetric potentials. This is the third of a series of papers that describes a sample of 10 nearby and massive ETG observed with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph in Integral Field mode installed on the Gemini-South t…
We present our results of the spectroscopic study of the lenticular galaxy NGC 4143 - an outskirt member of the Ursa Major cluster. Using the observations at the 6-m SAO RAS telescope with the SCORPIO-2 spectrograph and also the archive data of panoramic spectroscopy with the SAURON IFU at the WHT, we have detected an extended inclined gaseous disk which is traced up to a distance of about 3.5 kpc from the center, with a spin approximately opposite to the spin of the stellar disk. The galaxy images in the H-alpha and [NII]6583 emission lines obtained at the 2.5-m CMO SAI MSU telescope with the…
We explore the gas morphology and excitation mechanisms of the ionization cones of the Type II Seyfert galaxy NGC~5728. Kinematics derived from near-IR and optical data from the SINFONI and MUSE IFUs on the VLT reveal AGN-driven outflows powered by a super-massive black hole (SMBH) of mass 3.4$\times$10$^2$ M$_\odot$, bolometric luminosity of 1.46$\times$10$^{44}$ erg/s, Eddington ratio 3.3$\times$10$^{-2}$ and an accretion rate of 2.7$\times$10$^2$ M$_\odot$/yr. The symmetric bicone outflows show rapid acceleration to $\pm$250 km/s at $\sim$250 pc, then decelerating to $\sim$130 km/s at 500 p…
We explore the gas morphology and excitation mechanisms of the ionization cones of the Type II Seyfert galaxy NGC 5728. Near-IR and optical data from the SINFONI and MUSE IFUs on the VLT are combined with $HST$ optical images, $Chandra$ X-ray data and VLA radio observations. The complex nuclear structure has a star-forming (SF) ring with a diameter of 2 kpc. A radio jet impacts on the ISM at about 200 pc from the nucleus, with the SN remnants in the SF ring also present. Emission-line ratios of [Fe II] and H II show heavy extinction towards the nucleus, moderate extinction in the SF ring and r…
We carried out IFU optical spectroscopy on three pointings in and near the SQ shock. We used PMAS on the 3.5m Calar Alto telescope to obtain measures of emission lines that provide insight into physical properties of the gas. Severe blending of Hα and [NII]6548,6583A emission lines in many spaxels required the assumption of at least two kinematical components in order to extract fluxes for the individual lines. Main results from our study include: (a) detection of discrete emission features in the new intruder velocity range 5400-6000km/s showing properties consistent with HII regions, (b) det…
We map the optical and near-infrared (NIR) emission-line flux distributions and kinematics of the inner 320$\times$535pc$^2$ of the elliptical galaxy NGC1052. The integral field spectra were obtained with the Gemini Telescope using the GMOS-IFU and NIFS instruments, with angular resolutions of 0''88 and 0''1 in the optical and NIR, respectively. We detect five kinematic components: (1 and 2) Two spatially unresolved components, being a broad line region visible in H$α$, with a FWHM of $\sim$3200km s$^{-1}$ and an intermediate-broad component seen in the [OIII]$λλ$4959,5007 doublet; (3) an exte…
We present a dynamical analysis to infer the structural parameters and properties of the two nearby, compact, high velocity dispersion galaxies MRK1216 & NGC1277. Combining deep HST imaging, wide-field IFU stellar kinematics, and complementary long-slit spectroscopic data out to 3 R_e, we construct orbit-based models to constrain their black hole masses, dark matter content and stellar mass-to-light ratios. We obtain a black hole mass of log(Mbh/Msun) = 10.1(+0.1/-0.2) for NGC1277 and an upper limit of log(Mbh/Msun) = 10.0 for MRK1216, within 99.7 per cent confidence. The stellar mass-to-light…
We present optical $\textit{BVRI}$ photometry, H$α$ IFU velocity fields, and H$α$ long-slit rotation curves for a sample of four nearby spiral galaxies having a range of morphologies and inclinations. We show that the $\texttt{DiskFit}$ code can be used to model the photometric and kinematic data of these four galaxies and explore how well the photometric data can be decomposed into structures like bars and bulges and to look for non-circular motions in the kinematic data. In general, we find good agreement between our photometric and kinematic models for most parameters. We find the best cons…
We present integral field spectroscopic observations of the central region of the active galaxy NGC 4258 obtained with the fibre IFU system INTEGRAL. We have been able to detect cold neutral gas by means of the interstellar NaD doublet absorption and to trace its distribution and kinematics with respect to the underlying disc. The neutral gas is blue-shifted with projected velocities in the 120--370 km/s range. We have also detected peculiar kinematics in part of the ionized gas in this region by means of a careful kinematic decomposition. The bipolar spatial distribution of the broader compon…
