This paper presents a new robust fault and state estimation based on recursive least square filter for linear stochastic systems with unknown disturbances. The novel elements of the algorithm are : a simple, easily implementable, square root method which is shown to solve the numerical problems affecting the unknown input filter algorithm and related information filter and smoothing algorithms; an iterative framework, where information and covariance filters and smoothing are sequentially run in order to estimate the state and fault. This method provides a direct estimate of the state and fault in a single block with a simple formulation. A numerical example is given in order to illustrate the performance of the proposed filter.
An Adaptive Fault-tolerant Controller procedure for a class of the affine nonlinear system is developed in this paper. This methodology hides both the faults and external disturbances. Compare to the procedure that require separate fault detection, isolation, and identification units, the suggested method concentrates on fault hiding to reduce the units. The main merits of the proposed method are 1) guaranteed stability of the closed loop system, 2) convergence of the states of nominal and faulty systems to zero, and 3) convergence of the tracking error to the origin. The robustness of present…
This paper addresses the issue of power flow control for partially faulty microgrids. In microgrid control systems, faults may occur in both electrical and communication layers. This may have severe effects on the operation of microgrids. In addition, disturbances always coexist with faults in microgrids, which may further deteriorate system performance. To address the faults and disturbances simultaneously, a model predictive control (MPC) method based on set-membership estimation (SME) that transmits information via a communication network is proposed. When electrical devices are nonfunction…
The literature available on disturbance decoupling (DD) of Boolean control network (BCN) is built on a restrictive notion of what constitutes as disturbance decoupling. The results available on necessary and sufficient conditions are of limited applicability because of their stringent requirements. This work tries to expand the notion of DD in BCN to incorporate a larger number of systems deemed unsuitable for DD. The methods available are further restrictive in the sense that system is forced to follow trajectory unaffected by the disturbances rather than decoupling disturbances while the sys…
This paper solves the problem of station-keeping control of a surface vessel under conditions of sinusoidal disturbances with unknown parameters. The proposed control algorithm is based on the geometric approach with the use of the adaptive internal model and the extended observer. The paper analytically proves the boundedness of the trajectories of the system and their semiglobal convergence to an arbitrarily small set. The performance of the algorithm is illustrated by computer simulation.

The paper deals with the problem of distributed fault detection and isolation (FDI) for a group of heterogeneous multi-agent systems. The developed formation for the FDI is taken into account as a distributed observer design methodology, where the interaction between the agent and its neighbors is described as a vector of distributed relative output measurements. Based on two performance indexes $\mathcal{H}_2$ and $\mathcal{H}_{-}$, sufficient conditions are given to ensure the residual signals robust to the disturbances and sensitive with respect to the fault signals. In addition, we show th…
This paper is concerned with the fault diagnosis problem for general linear heterodirectional hyperbolic ODE-PDE systems. A systematic solution is presented for additive time-varying actuator, process and sensor faults in the presence of disturbances. The faults and disturbances are represented by the solutions of finite-dimensional signal models, which allow to take a large class of signals into account. For disturbances, that are only bounded, a threshold for secured fault diagnosis is derived. By applying integral transformations to the system an algebraic fault detection equation to detect…
Gaussian Process (GP) regressions have proven to be a valuable tool to predict disturbances and model mismatches and incorporate this information into a Model Predictive Control (MPC) prediction. Unfortunately, the computational complexity of inference and learning on classical GPs scales cubically, which is intractable for real-time applications. Thus GPs are commonly trained offline, which is not suited for learning disturbances as their dynamics may vary with time. Recently, state-space formulation of GPs has been introduced, allowing inference and learning with linear computational complex…
This paper addresses the problem of online inverse reinforcement learning for nonlinear systems with modeling uncertainties while in the presence of unknown disturbances. The developed approach observes state and input trajectories for an agent and identifies the unknown reward function online. Sub-optimality introduced in the observed trajectories by the unknown external disturbance is compensated for using a novel model-based inverse reinforcement learning approach. The observer estimates the external disturbances and uses the resulting estimates to learn the dynamic model of the demonstrato…

This paper presents an observer-integrated Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach, called Disturbance OBserver Network (DOB-Net), for robots operating in environments where disturbances are unknown and time-varying, and may frequently exceed robot control capabilities. The DOB-Net integrates a disturbance dynamics observer network and a controller network. Originated from conventional DOB mechanisms, the observer is built and enhanced via Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), encoding estimation of past values and prediction of future values of unknown disturbances in RNN hidden state. Such encoding…

This paper solves the problem of regulating the rotor speed tracking error for wind turbines in the full-load region by an effective robust-adaptive control strategy. The developed controller compensates for the uncertainty in the control input effectiveness caused by a pitch actuator fault, unmeasurable wind disturbance, and nonlinearity in the model. Wind turbines have multi-layer structures such that the high-level structure is nonlinearly coupled through an aggregation of the low-level control authorities. Hence, the control design is divided into two stages. First, an $\mathcal{L}_2$ cont…
In this note, we develop an adaptive observer for a class of nonlinear systems with switched unknown parameters to estimate the states and parameters simultaneously. The main challenge lies in how to eliminate the disturbance effect of zero-input responses caused by the switching on the parameter estimation. These responses depend on the unknown states at switching instants (SASI) and constitute an additive disturbance to the parameter estimation, which obstructs parameter convergence to zero. Our solution is to treat the zero-input responses as excitations instead of disturbances. This is rea…
In this paper, adaptive prescribed finite time stabilization of uncertain single-input and single-output nonlinear systems is considered in the presence of unknown states, unknown parameters, external load disturbance, and non-symmetric input saturation. A prescribed finite time disturbance observer is designed to approximate the unmeasured external disturbance. Also, a nonsingular prescribed finite time terminal sliding mode control is proposed for the closed-loop control of the system with the non-symmetric input saturation. Extended Kalman filter algorithm is employed for the real-time esti…
We propose an open loop methodology based on sample statistics to solve chance constrained stochastic optimal control problems with probabilistic safety guarantees for linear systems where the additive Gaussian noise has unknown mean and covariance. We consider a joint chance constraint for time-varying polytopic target sets under assumptions that the disturbance has been sufficiently sampled. We derive two theorems that allow us to bound the probability of the state being more than some number of sample standard deviations away from the sample mean. We use these theorems to reformulate the ch…
An aggregate model is a single-zone equivalent of a multi-zone building, and is useful for many purposes, including model based control of large heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment. This paper deals with the problem of simultaneously identifying an aggregate thermal dynamic model and unknown disturbances from input-output data. The unknown disturbance is a key challenge since it is not measurable but non-negligible. We first present a principled method to aggregate a multi-zone building model into a single zone model, and show the aggregation is not as trivial as it has …
This paper deals with the tracking control problem for a class of unknown pure feedback system with pure state constraints on the state variables and unknown time-varying bounded disturbances. An adaptive controller is presented for such systems for the very first time. The controller is designed using the backstepping method. While designing it, Barrier Lyapunov Functions is used so that the state variables do not contravene its constraints. In order to cope with the unknown dynamics of the system, an online approximator is designed using a neural network with a novel adaptive law for its wei…
