An inverse problem to identify unknown coefficients of a partial differential equation by a single interior measurement is considered. The equation considered in this paper is a strongly elliptic second order scalar equation which can have complex coefficients in a bounded domain with $C^2$ boundary and single interior measurement means that we know a given solution of the equation in this domain. The equation includes some model equations arising from acoustics, viscoelasticity and hydrology. We assume that the coefficients are piecewise analytic. Our major result is the local Hölder stability estimate for identifying the unknown coefficients. If the unknown coefficients is a complex coefficient in the principal part of the equation, we assumed a condition which we named admissibility assumption for the real part and imaginary part of the difference of the two complex coefficients. This admissibility assumption is automatically satisfied if the complex coefficients are real valued. For identifying either the real coefficient in the principal part or the coefficient of the 0-th order of the equation, the major result implies the global uniqueness for the identification.
For the stationary hydrodynamic model for semiconductors with sonic boundary, represented by Euler-Poisson equations, it possesses the various physical solutions including interior subsonic solutions/interior supersonic solutions/shock transonic solutions/$C^1$-smooth transonic solutions. However, the structural stability for these physical solutions is challenging and has remained open as we know. In this paper, we investigate the structural stability of interior subsonic solutions when the doping profiles are restricted in the subsonic region. The main result is proved by using the local (we…
We prove logarithmic conditional stability up to the final time for backward-parabolic operators whose coefficients are Log-Lipschitz continuous in $t$ and Lipschitz continuous in $x$. The result complements previous achievements of Del Santo and Prizzi (2009) and Del Santo, Jaeh and Prizzi (2015), concerning conditional stability (of a type intermediate between Hoelder and logarithmic), arbitrarily closed, but not up to the final time.
This paper deals with an inverse source problem for the $1$D time-fractional diffusion equation by using boundary measurement. The conditional stability in identification of the unknown source term is proved on the basis of the Fourier transform and several properties of the Mittag-Leffler functions.
This paper concerns inverse problems for strongly coupled Schrödinger equations. The purpose of this inverse problem is to retrieve a stationary potential in the strongly coupled Schrödinger equations from either boundary or internal measurements. Two stability results are derived from a new Carleman estimate for the strongly coupled Schrödinger equations.
We study stability of reconstruction in current density impedance imaging (CDII), that is, the inverse problem of recovering the conductivity of a body from the measurement of the magnitude of the current density vector field in the interior of the object. Our results show that CDII is stable with respect to errors in interior measurements of the current density vector field, and confirm the stability of reconstruction which was previously observed in numerical simulations, and was long believed to be the case.
We prove continuous dependence on initial data for a backward parabolic operator whose leading coefficients are Osgodd continuous in time. This result fills the gap between uniqueness and continuity results obtained so far.
We study the inverse boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at selected frequencies as the data. A conditional Lipschitz stability estimate for the inverse problem holds in the case of wavespeeds that are a linear combination of piecewise constant functions (following a domain partition) and gives a framework in which the scheme converges. The stability constant grows exponentially as the number of subdomains in the domain partition increases. We establish an order optimal upper bound for the stability constant. We eventually realize computational …
We consider the density field $f(x)$ generated by a volume source $μ(y)$ in $D$ which is a domain in $\R^3$. For two disjoint segments $γ, Γ_1$ on a straight line in $\R^3 \setminus \ooo{D}$, we establish a conditional stability estimate of Hölder type in determining $f$ on $Γ_1$ by data $f$ on $γ$. This is a theoretical background for real-use solutions for the determination of air dose rates of radioactive substance at the human height level by high-altitude data. The proof of the stability estimate is based on the harmonic extension and the stability for line unique continuation of a harmon…
In this paper we consider a boundary stabilization problem for the wave equation with interior delay. We prove an exponential stability result under some Lions geometric condition. The proof of the main result is based on an identity with multipliers that allows to obtain a uniform decay estimate for a suitable Lyapunov functional.
In this paper we consider an interior stabilization problem for the wave equation with dynamic boundary delay. We prove some stability results under the choice of damping operator. The proof of the main result is based on a frequency domain method and combines a contradiction argument with the multiplier technique to carry out a special analysis for the resolvent.
The goal of quantitative elastography is to identify biomechanical parameters from interior displacement data, which are provided by other modalities, such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging. In this paper, we analyze the stability of several linearized problems in quantitative elastography. Our method is based on the theory of redundant systems of linear partial differential equations. We analyze the ellipticity properties of the corresponding PDE systems augmented with the interior displacement data; we explicitly characterize the kernel of the forward operators and show injectivity…
In this paper we present an improvement of [Math. Ann. 345 (2009), 213--243], where the authors proved a result concerning continuous dependence for backward parabolic operators whose coefficients are Log-Lipschitz in $t$ and $C^2$ in $x$. The $C^2$ regularity with respect to $x$ had to be assumed for technical reasons. Here we remove this assumption, replacing it with Lipschitz-continuity. The main tools in the proof are Littlewood-Paley theory and Bony's paraproduct as well as a result of Coifman and Meyer [Astérisque 57, 1978, Th. 35].
We show asymptotic, exponential stability of the equilibrium configuration, $\smallL$, of a hollow physical pendulum with its inner part entirely filled with a viscous liquid, corresponding to the center of mass being in the lowest position. Moreover, we prove that every weak solution with initial data possessing finite total initial energy and belonging to a "large" open set, becomes eventually smooth and decays exponentially fast to the equilibrium $\smallL$. These results are obtained also as byproduct of a "generalized linearization principle" that we show for evolution equations with non-…
The interest of the scientific community for the existence, uniqueness and stability of solutions to PDE's is testified by the numerous works available in the literature. In particular, in some recent publications on the subject an inequality guaranteeing stability is shown to hold provided that the coefficients of the principal part of the differential operator are Log-Lipschitz continuous. Herein this result is improved along two directions. First, we describe how to construct an operator, whose coefficients in the principal part are not Log-Lipschitz continuous, for which the above mentione…
Assume that $M$ is a compact Riemannian manifold of bounded geometry given by restrictions on its diameter, Ricci curvature and injectivity radius. Assume we are given, with some error, the first eigenvalues of the Laplacian $Δ_g$ on $M$ as well as the corresponding eigenfunctions restricted on an open set in $M$. We then construct a stable approximation to the manifold $(M,g)$. Namely, we construct a metric space and a Riemannian manifold which differ, in a proper sense, just a little from $M$ when the above data are given with a small error. We give an explicit $\log\log$-type stability esti…
We consider the one-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with a double power focusing-defocusing nonlinearity \begin{equation*} \partial_{t}^{2}u-\partial_{x}^{2}u+u-|u|^{p-1}u+|u|^{q-1}u=0,\quad \mbox{on}\ [0,\infty)\times \mathbb{R}, \end{equation*} with $1<q<p<\infty$. The main result states the stability in the energy space $H^{1}(\mathbb{R})\times L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ of the sums of decoupled solitary waves with different speeds, up to the natural instabilities. The proof is inspired by the techniques developed for the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation and the nonlinear Schrödin…
In this article, we provide a modified argument for proving conditional stability for inverse problems of determining spatially varying functions in evolution equations by Carleman estimates. Our method needs not any cut-off procedures and can simplify the existing proofs. We establish the conditional stability for inverse source problems for a hyperbolic equation and a parabolic equation, and our method is widely applicable to various evolution equations.
A rigid body, with an interior cavity entirely filled with a Navier-Stokes liquid, moves in absence of external torques relative to the center of mass of the coupled system body-liquid (inertial motions). The only steady-state motions allowed are then those where the system, as a whole rigid body, rotates uniformly around one of the central axes of inertia (permanent rotations). Objective of this article is two-fold. On the one hand, we provide sufficient conditions for the asymptotic, exponential stability of permanent rotations, as well as for their instability. On the other hand, we study t…
For linearized Navier-Stokes equations, we consider an inverse source problem of determining a spatially varying divergence-free factor. We prove the global Lipschitz stability by interior data over a time interval and velocity field at $t_0>0$ over the spatial domain. The key are Carleman estimates for the Navier-Stokes equations and the operator rot.
We consider the inverse problem of determining the Winkler subgrade reaction coefficient of a slab foundation modelled as a thin elastic plate clamped at the boundary. The plate is loaded by a concentrated force and its transversal deflection is measured at the interior points. We prove a global Hölder stability estimate under (mild) regularity assumptions on the unknown coefficient.
For linearized Navier-Stokes equations, we first derive a Carleman estimate with a regular weight function. Then we apply it to establish conditional stability for the lateral Cauchy problem and finally we prove conditional stability estimates for inverse source problem of determining a spatially varying divergence-free factor of a source term.
We consider an inverse problem of reconstructing two spatially varying coefficients in an acoustic equation of hyperbolic type using interior data of solutions with suitable choices of initial condition. Using a Carleman estimate, we prove Lipschitz stability estimates which ensures unique reconstruction of both coefficients. Our theoretical results are justified by numerical studies on the reconstruction of two unknown coefficients using noisy backscattered data.
In this paper, we study an inverse problem for linear parabolic system with variable diffusion coefficients subject to dynamic boundary conditions. We prove a global Lipschitz stability for the inverse problem involving a simultaneous recovery of two source terms from a single measurement and interior observations, based on a recent Carleman estimate for such problems.
We show non-linear stability and instability results in spherical symmetry for the interior of a charged black hole -approaching a sub-extremal Reissner-Nordström background fast enough at infinity- in presence of a massive and charged scalar field, motivated by the strong cosmic censorship conjecture in that setting : 1. Stability : We prove that spherically symmetric characteristic initial data to the Einstein-Maxwell- Klein-Gordon equations approaching a Reissner-Nordström background with a sufficiently decaying polynomial decay rate on the event horizon gives rise to a space-time possessin…
In this article, we consider inverse problems of determining a source term and a coefficient of a first-order partial differential equation and prove conditional stability estimates with minimum boundary observation data and relaxed condition on the principal part.
In this article, we discuss quantitative Runge approximation properties for the acoustic Helmholtz equation and prove stability improvement results in the high frequency limit for an associated partial data inverse problem modelled on \cite{AU04, KU19}. The results rely on quantitative unique continuation estimates in suitable function spaces with explicit frequency dependence. We contrast the frequency dependence of interior Runge approximation results from non-convex and convex sets.
The aim of this paper is to provide a proof of the (conditional) orbital stability of solitary waves solutions to the fractional Korteweg- de Vries equation (fKdV) and to the fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (fBBM) equation in the $L^2$ subcritical case. We also discuss instability and its possible scenarios.
We present an existence and stability theory for gravity-capillary solitary waves with constant vorticity on the surface of a body of water of finite depth. Exploiting a rotational version of the classical variational principle, we prove the existence of a minimiser of the wave energy $\mathcal H$ subject to the constraint $\mathcal I=2μ$, where $\mathcal I$ is the wave momentum and $0< μ\ll 1$. Since $\mathcal H$ and $\mathcal I$ are both conserved quantities a standard argument asserts the stability of the set $D_μ$ of minimisers: solutions starting near $D_μ$ remain close to $D_μ$ in a suit…
In this paper we show that the hydrodynamic problem for three-dimensional water waves with strong surface-tension effects admits a fully localised solitary wave which decays to the undisturbed state of the water in every horizontal direction. The proof is based upon the classical variational principle that a solitary wave of this type is a critical point of the energy subject to the constraint that the momentum is fixed. We prove the existence of a minimiser of the energy subject to the constraint that the momentum is fixed and small. The existence of a small-amplitude solitary wave is thus as…
Conditional well-posedness and data-driven method for identifying the dynamic source in a coupled diffusion system from one single boundary measurement
We show a stability result for the Schwarzschild singularity (inside the black hole region) for the Einstein vacuum equations. The result is proven in the class of polarized axial symmetry, under perturbations of the Schwarzschild data induced on a hypersurface $\{r=\e\}$, $\e<<2M$. Our result is only partly a stability result, in that we show that while a (space-like) singularity persists under perturbations as above, the behaviour of the metric approaching the singularity is much more involved than for the Schwarzschild solution. Indeed, we find that the solution displays asymptocially-veloc…
