We present the first detailed spatio-kinematical analysis and modelling of the planetary nebula Abell 65, which is known to host a post-common envelope, binary, central star system. As such, this object is of great interest in studying the link between nebular morphology and central star binarity.
[OIII]5007A and H-alpha+[NII]6584A longslit spectra and imagery of Abell 65 were obtained with the Manchester Echelle Spectrometer on the 2.1-m telescope at the San Pedro Martir Observatory (MES-SPM). Further [OIII]5007A longslit spectra were obtained with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope (VLT-UVES). These data were used to develop a spatio-kinematical model for the [OIII]5007A emission from Abell 65. A "best-fit" model was found by comparing synthetic spectra and images rendered from the model to the data. The model comprises an outer shell and an inner shell, with kinematical ages of 15000 +/- 5000 yr kpc^-1 and 8000 +/- 3000 yr kpc^-1, respectively. Both shells have peanut-shaped bipolar structures with symmetry axes at inclinations of 55 +/- 10 deg (to the line-of-sight) for the outer shell and 68 +/- 10 deg for the inner shell. The near-alignment between the nebular shells and the binary orbital inclination (of 68 +/- 2 deg) is strongly indicative that the binary is responsible for shaping the nebula. Abell 65 is one of a growing number of planetary nebulae (seven to date, including Abell 65 itself) for which observations and modelling support the shaping influence of a central binary.
Eight planetary nebulae have been identified as `born-again', a class of object typified by knotty secondary ejecta having low masses ($\sim$$10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$) with nearly no hydrogen. Abell 30, the archetype of the class, also belongs to a small subset of planetary nebulae that exhibit extreme abundance discrepancy factors (where Abell 30 is the most extreme), a phenomenon strongly linked to binary star interactions. We report the presence of light curve brightness variations having a period of 1.060 days that are highly suggestive of a binary central star in Abell 30. If confirmed, this …
We present a detailed study of the barium star at the heart of the planetary nebula Abell 70. Time-series photometry obtained over a period of more than ten years demonstrates that the barium-contaminated companion is a rapid rotator with temporal variability due to spots. The amplitude and phasing of the photometric variability changes abruptly, however there is no evidence for a change in the rotation period (P = 2.06~d) over the course of the observations. The co-addition of 17 high-resolution spectra obtained with VLT-UVES allow us to measure the physical and chemical properties of the com…
The long-standing difference in chemical abundances determined from optical recombination lines and collisionally excited lines raises questions about our understanding of atomic physics, as well as the assumptions made when determining physical conditions and chemical abundances in astrophysical nebulae. Here, we study the recombination contribution of [O III] 4363 and the validity of the line ratio [O III] 4363/4959 as a temperature diagnostic in planetary nebulae with a high abundance discrepancy. We derive a fit for the recombination coefficient of [O III] 4363 that takes into account the …
The planetary nebula (PN) Abell 48 (PN G029.0+00.4) is around a rare Wolf-Rayet [WN5] star whose stellar history is as yet unknown. Using the integral field observations of the H$α$ $λ$6563 and [N II] $λ$6584 line emissions, we conducted a comprehensive spatio-kinematic analysis of this PN. A three-dimensional spatio-kinematic ionization model was developed with the kinematic modeling tool SHAPE to replicate the observed spatially-resolved velocity channels and position--velocity diagrams. According to our kinematic analysis of the H$α$ emission, this object possesses a deformed elliptic toroi…
The GW Vir instability strip in the light of new observations of PG 1159 stars. Discovery of pulsations in the central star of Abell 72 and variability of RX J0122.9-7521
We report initial results from an ongoing spectroscopic survey of central stars of faint planetary nebulae (PNe), obtained with the Low-Resolution Spectrograph on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. The six PN nuclei (PNNi) discussed here all have strong emission at the O VI 3811-3834 A doublet, indicative of very high temperatures. Five of them--the nuclei of Ou 2, Kn 61, Kn 15, Abell 72, and Kn 130--belong to the hydrogen-deficient PG 1159 class, showing a strong absorption feature of He II and C IV at 4650-4690 A. Based on exploratory comparisons with synthetic model-atmosphere spectra, and the pre…
