We experimentally and theoretically study the frequency shift of a driven cavity coupled to a superconducting charge qubit. In addition to previous studies, we here also consider drive strengths large enough to energetically allow for quasiparticle creation. Quasiparticle tunneling leads to the inclusion of more than two charge states in the dynamics. To explain the observed effects, we develop a master equation for the microwave dressed charge states, including quasiparticle tunneling. A bimodal behavior of the frequency shift as a function of gate voltage can be used for sensitive charge detection. However, at weak drives the charge sensitivity is significantly reduced by non-equilibrium quasiparticles, which induce transitions to a non-sensitive state. Unexpectedly, at high enough drives, quasiparticle tunneling enables a very fast relaxation channel to the sensitive state. In this regime, the charge sensitivity is thus robust against externally injected quasiparticles and the desired dynamics prevail over a broad range of temperatures. We find very good agreement between theory and experiment over a wide range of drive strengths and temperatures.
We study decoherence in superconducting qubits due to quasiparticle tunneling which is enhanced by two known deviations from the equilibrium BCS theory. The first process corresponds to tunneling of an already existing quasiparticle across the junction. The quasiparticle density is increased, e.g., because of an effective quasiparticle doping of the system. The second process is quasiparticle tunneling by breaking of a Cooper pair. This can happen at typical energies of superconducting qubits if there is an extended quasiparticle density inside the gap. We calculate the induced energy decay an…
Tunneling of quasiparticles between two nearly-aligned graphene sheets produces resonant current-voltage characteristics because of the quasi-exact conservation of in-plane momentum. We claim that, in this regime, vertical transport in graphene/boron nitride/graphene heterostructures carries precious information on electron-electron interactions and the quasiparticle spectral function of the two-dimensional electron system in graphene. We present extensive microscopic calculations of the tunneling spectra with the inclusion of quasiparticle lifetime effects and elucidate the range of parameter…
Remarkable nonlinearities in the differential tunneling conductance between fractional quantum Hall edge states at a constriction are observed in the weak-backscattering regime. In the $ν$ = 1/3 state a peak develops as temperature is increased and its width is determined by the fractional charge. In the range $2/3 \le ν\le 1/3$ this width displays a symmetric behavior around $ν$ = 1/2. We discuss the consistency of these results with available theoretical predictions for inter-edge quasiparticle tunneling in the weak-backscattering regime.
Theory predicts that quasiparticle tunneling between the counter-propagating edges in a fractional quantum Hall state can be used to measure the effective quasiparticle charge e* and dimensionless interaction parameter g, and thereby characterize the many-body wavefunction describing the state. We report measurements of quasiparticle tunneling in a high mobility GaAs two dimensional electron system in the fractional quantum Hall state at nu=5/2 using a gate-defined constriction to bring the edges close together. We find the dc-bias peaks in the tunneling conductance at different temperatures c…
We make a semiclassical analysis of thermal pair creations of quasiparticles at various filling factors in quantum Hall systems. It is argued that the gap energy is reduced considerably by the Coulomb potential made by impurities. It is also shown that a tunneling process becomes important at low temperature and at strong magnetic field. We fit typical experimental data excellently based on our semiclassical results of the gap energy.
We investigate quasiparticle tunneling in a Cooper-pair box which is embedded in a superconducting ring to allow control of the total phase difference across the island. The phase affects the transition rate between different electron number parity states of the island, which can be observed in experiment by established means. The phase dependence also leads to what is known as the cos-phi term in the tunneling characteristics of classical Josephson junctions. This effect has remained controversial for decades; the proposed scheme opens an independent way to probe it.
In fractional quantum Hall systems, quasiparticles of fractional charge can tunnel between the edges at a quantum point contact. Such tunneling (or backscattering) processes contribute to charge transport, and provide information on both the charge and statistics of the quasiparticles involved. Here we study quasiparticle tunneling in the Moore-Read state, in which quasiparticles of charge e/4 (non-Abelian) and e/2 (Abelian) may co-exist and both contribute to edge transport. On a disk geometry, we calculate the matrix elements for e/2 and e/4 quasiholes to tunnel through the bulk of the Moore…

We have calculated the linear conductance associated with tunneling of individual quasiparticles of primary quantum Hall liquids with filling factors $ν=1/(2m+1)$ through a system of two antidots in series. On-site Coulomb interaction simulates the Fermi exclusion and makes the quasiparticle dynamics similar to that of tunneling electrons. The liquid edges serve as the quasiparticle reservoirs, and also create the dissipation mechanism for tunneling between the antidots. In the regime of strong dissipation, the conductance should exhibit resonant peaks of unusual form and a width proportional …
Thermodynamic properties of quasiparticles in a graphene-based structures are investigated. Two graphene superconducting layers (one superconducting component is placed on the top layeredgraphene structure and the other component in the bottom) separated by oxide dielectric layers and one normal graphene layer in the middle. The quasiparticle flow emerged due to external gate voltage, we considered it as a gas of electron-hole pairs whose components belong to different layers. This is a striking result in view of the complexity of these systems: we have established that specific heat exhibits …
We study dephasing of a superconducting qubit due to quasiparticle tunneling through a Josephson junction. While qubit decay due to tunneling processes is well understood within a golden rule approximation, pure dephasing due to BCS quasiparticles gives rise to a divergent golden rule rate. We calculate qubit dephasing due to quasiparticle tunneling beyond lowest order approximation in coupling between qubit and quasiparticles. Summing up a certain class of diagrams we show that qubit dephasing due to purely longitudinal coupling to quasiparticles leads to a dephasing $\sim \exp(-x(t))$ where …
We have experimentally identified fractional quasiparticle creation in a tunneling process through a local fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state. The local FQH state is prepared in a low-density region near a quantum point contact (QPC) in an integer quantum Hall (IQH) system. Shot-noise measurements reveal a clear transition from elementary-charge tunneling at low bias to fractional-charge tunneling at high bias. The fractional shot noise is proportional to T1(1 ? T1) over a wide range of T1, where T1 is the transmission probability of the IQH edge channel. This binomial distribution indicates …
Shot noise measurements were recently exploited to measure the charge of the quasiparticles in the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) regime. For fractional filling factors nu=1/3 and 2/5 of the first Landau level, fractional charges q=e/3 and e/5, respectively, were measured. We investigate here the interaction of e/3 quasiparticles with a strong backscatterer and find unexpected results. When a weak backscatterer is introduced in the path of an otherwise noiseless current of quasiparticles, stochastic partitioning of the quasiparticles takes place and shot noise proportional to their charge appea…
The fluxonium qubit has arisen as one of the most promising candidate devices for implementing quantum information in superconducting devices, since it is both insensitive to charge noise (like flux qubits) and insensitive to flux noise (like charge qubits). Here, we investigate the stability of the quantum information to quasiparticle tunneling through a Josephson junction. Microscopically, this dephasing is due to the dependence of the quasiparticle transmission probability on the qubit state. We argue that on a phenomenological level the dephasing mechanism can be understood as originating …
A calculation of the energy decay rate of a Josephson qubit from non-equilibrium quasiparticles is made using the environmental P(E) theory. For a large-capacitance qubit, we extend the theory to include the tunneling of quasiparticles, which has an electron- and hole-like charge components.
We have measured, in real time, individual quasiparticle tunneling in a single Cooper pair transistor, using rf reflectometry on the supercurrent branch. We have extracted the even-to-odd and odd-to-even transition rates directly by analyzing the distributions of dwell times in the even and odd states of the transistor. We discuss both the measurement and analysis techniques and report on the temperature and gate dependence of the quasiparticle tunneling rates.
In superconducting qubits the lifetime of quantum states cannot be prolonged arbitrarily by decreasing temperature. At low temperature quasiparticles tunneling between electromagnetic environment and superconducting islands takes the condensate state out of equilibrium due to charge imbalance. We obtain the tunneling rate from a phenomenological model of non-equilibrium, where nonequilibrium quasiparticle tunnelling stimulates a temperature-dependent chemical potential shift in superconductor. As a result we obtain a non-monotonic behavior for relaxation rate as function of temperature. Depend…
Determination of properties of quasiparticle excitations is an important task in the experimental investigation of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). We propose a model-independent method for finding the scaling dimension of FQHE quasiparticles from measurements of the electric current tunneling between two FQHE edges and its noise. In comparison to the commonly used method based on measuring the tunneling current only, the proposed method is less prone to the errors due to non-universal physics of tunnel junctions.
Using a quantum noise approach, we discuss the physics of both normal metal and superconducting single electron transistors (SET) coupled to mechanical resonators. Particular attention is paid to the regime where transport occurs via incoherent Cooper-pair tunneling (either via the Josephson quasiparticle (JQP) or double Josephson quasiparticle (DJQP) process). We show that, surprisingly, the back-action of tunneling Cooper pairs (or superconducting quasiparticles) can be used to significantly cool the oscillator. We also discuss the physical origin of negative damping effects in this system, …
We study quasiparticle tunneling between the edges of a non-Abelian topological state. The simplest examples are a p+ip superconductor and the Moore-Read Pfaffian non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall state; the latter state may have been observed at Landau-level filling fraction nu=5/2. Formulating the problem is conceptually and technically non-trivial: edge quasiparticle correlation functions are elements of a vector space, and transform into each other as the quasiparticle coordinates are braided. We show in general how to resolve this difficulty and uniquely define the quasiparticle tunneli…
We present a method to identify distinct tunneling modes in tunable superconducting tunnel junction composed of superconducting tip and sample in scanning tunneling microscope. Combining the measurement of the relative decay constant of tunneling current extracted from I-V-z spectroscopy with its statistical analysis over the atomic disorders in the sample surface, we identified the crossover of tunneling modes between single quasiparticle tunneling, multiple Andreev reflection, and Josephson tunneling with respect to the bias voltage. The method enables one to determine the particular tunneli…
We present radio-frequency measurements on a single-Cooper-pair-transistor in which individual quasiparticle poisoning events were observed with microsecond temporal resolution. Thermal activation of the quasiparticle dynamics is investigated, and consequently, we are able to determine energetics of the poisoning and un-poisoning processes. In particular, we are able to assign an effective quasiparticle temperature to parameterize the poisoning rate.
We study a qubit undergoing Landau-Zener transitions enabled by the coupling to a circuit-QED mode. Summing an infinite-order perturbation series, we determine the exact nonadiabatic transition probability for the qubit, being independent of the frequency of the QED mode. Possible applications are single-photon generation and the controllable creation of qubit-oscillator entanglement.
Tunneling of fractionally charged quasiparticles across a two-dimensional electron system on a fractional quantum Hall plateau is expected to be strongly enhanced at low temperatures. This theoretical prediction is at odds with recent experimental studies of samples with weakly-pinched quantum-point-contact constrictions, in which the opposite behavior is observed. We argue here that this unexpected finding is a consequence of electron-electron interactions near the point contact.
Coulomb interaction turns anyonic quasiparticles of a primary quantum Hall liquid with filling factor $ν=1/(2m+1)$ into hard-core anyons. We have developed a model of coherent transport of such quasiparticles in systems of multiple antidots by extending the Wigner-Jordan description of 1D abelian anyons to tunneling problems. We show that the anyonic exchange statistics manifests itself in tunneling conductance even in the {\em absence} of quasiparticle exchanges. In particular, it can be seen as a non-vanishing resonant peak associated with quasiparticle tunneling through a line of three anti…
Quasiparticle tunneling between two counter-propagating edges through point contacts could provide information on the statistics of the quasiparticles. Previous study on a disk found a scaling behavior by varying the tunneling distance. It was found that in the limit with zero tunneling distance, the Abelian quasiparticles tunneling obey the scaling analysis while the non-Abelian quasiparticles exhibit some non-trivial behaviors on the scaling exponents. Because of the limitation of disk geometry, we put the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state on the surface of a cylinder which has a larger tu…
We have theoretically investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) and the influence of nodal quasiparticles and zero energy bound states (ZES) on MQT in s-wave/ d-wave hybrid Josephson junctions. In contrast to d-wave/d-wave junctions, the low-energy quasiparticle dissipation resulting from nodal quasiparticles and ZES is suppressed due to a quasiparticle-tunneling blockade effect in an isotropic s-wave superconductor. Therefore, the inherent dissipation in these junctions is found to be very weak. We have also investigated MQT in a realistic s-wave/d-wave (Nb/Au/YBCO) junction in which O…
Spin selective nature of spin-filter tunnel junctions can be integrated with conventional metallic ferromagnets to regulate spin polarized quasiparticles in superconducting devices. We report fabrication of pseudo spin-valve device made with a bilayer of nitride spin-filter tunnel barrier (DyN or GdN) and a transition metal ferromagnet (Co and Gd). We show resistance switching in these devices corresponding to parallel and antiparallel configuration of their mutual magnetization direction. With optimal deposition process partial nitridation of the Co layer can be achieved. The magnetically dea…
Pseudospin, an additional degree of freedom related to the honeycomb structure of graphene, is responsible of many of the outstanding electronic properties found in this material. This article provides a clear understanding of how such pseudospin impacts the quasiparticle interferences of monolayer (ML) and bilayer (BL) graphene measured by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We have used this technique to map, with very high energy and space resolution, the spatial modulations of the local density of states of ML and BL graphene epitaxialy grown on SiC(0001), in pr…
We directly observe low-temperature non-equilibrium quasiparticle tunneling in a pair of charge qubits based on the single Cooper-pair box. We measure even- and odd-state dwell time distributions as a function of temperature, and interpret these results using a kinetic theory. While the even-state lifetime is exponentially distributed, the odd-state distribution is more heavily weighted to short times, implying that odd-to-even tunnel events are not described by a homogenous Poisson process. The mean odd-state dwell time increases sharply at low temperature, which is consistent with quasiparti…
We use radio-frequency reflectometry to measure quasiparticle tunneling rates in the single-Cooper-pair-transistor. Devices with and without quasiparticle traps in proximity to the island are studied. A $10^2$ to $10^3$-fold reduction in the quasiparticle tunneling rate onto the island is observed in the case of quasiparticle traps. In the quasiparticle trap samples we also measure a commensurate decrease in quasiparticle tunneling rate off the island.
We explain how (perturbed) boundary conformal field theory allows us to understand the tunneling of edge quasiparticles in non-Abelian topological states. The coupling between a bulk non-Abelian quasiparticle and the edge is due to resonant tunneling to a zero mode on the quasiparticle, which causes the zero mode to hybridize with the edge. This can be reformulated as the flow from one conformally-invariant boundary condition to another in an associated critical statistical mechanical model. Tunneling from one edge to another at a point contact can split the system in two, either partially or …
We study the scaling behavior in the tunneling amplitude when quasiparticles tunnel along a straight path between the two edges of a fractional quantum Hall annulus. Such scaling behavior originates from the propagation and tunneling of charged quasielectrons and quasiholes in an effective field analysis. In the limit when the annulus deforms continuously into a quasi-one-dimensional ring, we conjecture the exact functional form of the tunneling amplitude for several cases, which reproduces the numerical results in finite systems exactly. The results for Abelian quasiparticle tunneling is cons…
We present a microscopic theory of transport through quantum dot set-ups coupled to superconducting leads. We derive a master equation for the reduced density matrix to lowest order in the tunneling Hamiltonian and focus on quasiparticle tunneling. For high enough temperatures transport occurs in the subgap region due to thermally excited quasiparticles, which can be used to observe excited states of the system for low bias voltages. On the example of a double quantum dot we show how subgap transport spectroscopy can be done. Moreover, we use the single level quantum dot coupled to a normal an…
We study the magneto-conductance of a $1.4~\mathrm{μm}$-wide quantum dot in the fractional quantum Hall regime. For a filling factor $\approx 2/3$ and $\gtrsim 1/3$ in the quantum dot the observed Coulomb resonances show a periodic modulation in magnetic field. This indicates a non-trivial reconstruction of the 2/3 fractional quantum Hall state in the quantum dot. We present a model for the charge stability diagram of the system assuming two compressible regions separated by an incompressible stripe of filling factor $2/3$ and $1/3$, respectively. From the dependence of the magnetic field peri…
We present an explanation for the anomalous behavior in tunneling conductance and noise through a point contact between edge states in the Jain series $ν=p/(2np+1)$, for extremely weak-backscattering and low temperatures [Y.C. Chung, M. Heiblum, and V. Umansky, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf{91}}, 216804 (2003)]. We consider edge states with neutral modes propagating at finite velocity, and we show that the activation of their dynamics causes the unexpected change in the temperature power-law of the conductance. Even more importantly, we demonstrate that multiple-quasiparticles tunneling at low energie…
In a hybrid Superconductor - Insulator - Normal metal tunnel junction biased just below the gap, the extraction of hot electrons out of the normal metal results in electronic cooling effect. The quasiparticles injected in the superconductor accumulate near the tunnel interface, thus increasing the effective superconductor temperature. We propose a simple model for the diffusion of excess quasiparticles in a superconducting strip with an additional trap junction. This diffusion model has a complete analytic solution, which depends on experimentally accessible parameters. We find that the accumu…
The spectrum of a segment of InAs nanowire, confined between two superconducting leads, was measured as function of gate voltage and superconducting phase difference using a third normal-metal tunnel probe. Sub-gap resonances for odd electron occupancy---interpreted as bound states involving a confined electron and a quasiparticle from the superconducting leads, reminiscent of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states---evolve into Kondo-related resonances at higher magnetic fields. An additional zero bias peak of unknown origin is observed to coexist with the quasiparticle bound states.
We have engineered the bandgap profile of transmon qubits by combining oxygen-doped Al for tunnel junction electrodes and clean Al as quasiparticle traps to investigate energy relaxation due to quasiparticle tunneling. The relaxation time $T_1$ of the qubits is shown to be insensitive to this bandgap engineering. Operating at relatively low $E_J/E_C$ makes the transmon transition frequency distinctly dependent on the charge parity, allowing us to detect the quasiparticles tunneling across the qubit junction. Quasiparticle kinetics have been studied by monitoring the frequency switching due to …
We study quasiparticle tunneling in Josephson tunnel junctions embedded in an electromagnetic environment. We identify tunneling processes that transfer electrical charge and couple to the environment in a way similar to that of normal electrons, and processes that mix electrons and holes and are thus creating charge superpositions. The latter are sensitive to the phase difference between the superconductor and are thus limited by phase diffusion even at zero temperature. We show that the environmental coupling is suppressed in many environments, thus leading to lower quasiparticle decay rates…
Considering two-level media in the array of weakly coupled nano-cavities, we reveal a variety of dynamical regimes, such as diffusion, self-trapping, soliton, and breathers for the wave-packets in the presence of photon tunneling processes between the next-nearest cavities. We focus our attention on the low branch (LB) bright polariton soliton formation, due to the two-body polariton-polariton scattering processes. When detuning frequency is manipulated adiabatically, the low-branch lattice polariton localized states, i.e., that are solitons and breathers evolving between photon-like and matte…
We examine the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in high-Tc superconductor Josephson junctions with a d-wave order parameter. Using microscopic Hamiltonian and the functional integral method, we analytically obtain the MQT rate (the inverse lifetime of the metastable state) for the c-axis twist Josephson junctions. In the case of the zero twist angle, the system shows the super-Ohmic dissipation due to the presence of the nodal quasiparticle tunneling. Therefore, the MQT rate is strongly suppressed in compared with the finite twist angle cases.
We have developed a theory of quasiparticle backscattering in a system of point contacts formed between single-mode edges of several Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids (FQHLs) with in general different filling factors $ν_j$ and one common single-mode edge $ν_0$ of another FQHL. In the strong-tunneling limit, the model of quasiparticle backscattering is obtained by the duality transformation of the electron tunneling model. The new physics introduced by the multi-point-contact geometry of the system is coherent splitting of backscattered quasiparticles at the point contacts in the course of propag…
Hybrid Superconductor/Ferromagnet structures have been investigated recently to address the interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity. They also open up new routes for the investigation of out of equilibrium superconductivity. Here, we show how it is possible for out of equilibrium excitations produced in a superconducting thin film (S) to be localized in a ferromagnetic trap (F). Specifically, a ferromagnetic nano-volume in good contact with S represents a potential well for the quasiparticles (QPs) at the gap edge. As the superconducting proximity effect is highly suppressed in …
We investigate the properties of a hybrid single electron transistor, involving a small superconducting island sandwiched between normal metal leads, which is driven by dc plus ac voltages. In order to describe its properties we derive from the microscopic theory a set of coupled equations. They consist of a master equation for the probability to find excess charges on the island, with rates depending on the distribution of non-equilibrium quasiparticles. Their dynamics follows from a kinetic equation which accounts for the excitation by single-electron tunneling as well as the relaxation and …
The tunneling of quasiparticles (QPs) across Josephson junctions (JJs) detrimentally affects the coherence of superconducting and charge-parity qubits, and is shown to occur more frequently in magnetic fields. Here we demonstrate the parity lifetime to survive in excess of 50$\,\mathrmμ$s in magnetic fields up to 1$\,$T, utilising a semiconducting nanowire transmon to detect QP tunneling in real time. We exploit gate-tunable QP filters and find magnetic-field-enhanced parity lifetimes, consistent with increased QP trapping by the ungated nanowire due to orbital effects. Our findings highlight …
We present experiments on the dynamics of a two-state parametric fluctuator in a superconducting flux qubit. In spectroscopic measurements, the fluctuator manifests itself as a doublet line. When the qubit is excited in resonance with one of the two doublet lines, the correlation of readout results exhibits an exponential time decay which provides a measure of the fluctuator transition rate. The rate increases with temperature in the interval 40 to 158 mK. Based on the magnitude of the transition rate and the doublet line splitting we conclude that the fluctuation is induced by quasiparticle t…
We report on magnetoconductance measurements through a weakly coupled quantum dot, containing roughly 900 electrons, in a wide magnetic field range from 0 T to 12 T. We find modulations of the conductance resonances in the quantum Hall regime for higher integer filling factors $6> ν_\mathrm{dot} > 2$, in addition to modulations at $2> ν_\mathrm{dot} > 1$ and at fractional filling factors $ν_\mathrm{dot} \gtrsim 2/3$, $1/3$. Depending on the internal filling factor, edge reconstruction inside the quantum dot leads to the formation of multiple concentric compressible regions, which contain discr…
We consider tunneling through two point contacts between two edges of Quantum Hall liquids of different filling factors $ν_{0,1}=1/ (2m_{0,1}+1)$ with $m_0-m_1\equiv m>0$. Properties of the antidot formed between the point contacts in the strong-tunneling limit are shown to be very different from the $ν_0 =ν_1$ case, and include vanishing average total current in the two contacts and quasiparticles of charge $e/m$. For $m>1$, quasiparticle tunneling leads to non-trivial $m$-state dynamics of effective flux through the antidot which restores the regular ``electron'' periodicity of the current i…
We explain recent experimental observations on effective charge of edge states tunneling through a quantum point contact in the weak backscattering regime. We focus on the behavior of the excess noise and on the effective tunneling charge as a function of temperature and voltage. By introducing a minimal hierarchical model different filling factors, ν=p/(2p+1), in the Jain sequence are treated on equal footing, in presence also of non-universal interactions. The agreement found with the experiments for ν=2/3 and ν=2/5 reinforces the description of tunneling of bunching of quasiparticles at low…
Spin-polarized quasiparticles can be easily created during spin-filtering through a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) in contact with a superconductor due to pair breaking effects at the interface. A combination FI-N-FI sandwiched between two superconductors can be used to create and analyze such spin-polarized quasiparticles through their nonequilibrium accumulation in the middle metallic (N) layer. We report spin-polarized quasiparticle regulation in a double spin-filter tunnel junction in the configuration NbN-GdN1-Ti-GdN2-NbN. The middle Ti layer provides magnetic decoupling between two ferroma…
We study a two-terminal graphene Josephson junction with contacts shaped to form a narrow constriction, less than 100nm in length. The contacts are made from type II superconducting contacts and able to withstand magnetic fields high enough to reach the quantum Hall (QH) regime in graphene. In this regime, the device conductance is determined by edge states, plus the contribution from the constricted region. In particular, the constriction area can support supercurrents up to fields of ~2.5T. Moreover, enhanced conductance is observed through a wide range of magnetic fields and gate voltages. …
Recent schemes for experimentally probing non-abelian statistics in the quantum Hall effect are based on geometries where current-carrying quasiparticles flow along edges that encircle bulk quasiparticles, which are localized. Here we consider one such scheme, the Fabry-Perot interferometer, and analyze how its interference patterns are affected by a coupling that allows tunneling of neutral Majorana fermions between the bulk and edge. While at weak coupling this tunneling degrades the interference signal, we find that at strong coupling, the bulk quasiparticle becomes essentially absorbed by …
We demonstrate a new approach to dissipation engineering in microwave quantum optics. For a single mode, dissipation usually corresponds to quantum jumps, where photons are lost one by one. Here, we are able to tune the minimal number of lost photons per jump to be two (or more) with a simple dc voltage. As a consequence, different quantum states experience different dissipation. Causality implies that the states must also experience different energy shifts. Our measurements of these Lamb shifts are in good agreement with the predictions of the Kramers-Kronig relations for single quantum state…
