We model Carbon Recombination Line (CRL) emission from the Photo Dissociation Region (PDR) surrounding the Ultra-Compact (UC) HII region W48A. Our modelling shows that the inner regions ($A_V \sim 1$) of the CII layer in the PDR contribute significantly to the CRL emission. The dependence of line ratios of CRL emission with the density of the PDR and the far ultra-violet (FUV) radiation incident on the region is explored over a large range of these parameters that are typical for the environments of UCHII regions. We find that by observing a suitable set of CRLs it is possible to constrain the density of the PDR. If the neutral density in the PDR is high ($\gtrsim 10^7$ \cmthree) CRL emission is bright at high frequencies ($\gtrsim 20$ GHz), and absorption lines from such regions can be detected at low frequencies ($\lesssim 10$ GHz). Modelling CRL observations towards W48A shows that the UCHII region is embedded in a molecular cloud of density of about $4 \times$ 10$^7$ \cmthree.
The ngVLA will create a Galaxy-wide, volume-limited sample of HII regions; solve some long standing problems in the physics of HII regions; and provide an extinction-free star formation tracer in nearby galaxies.
Based on high quality observations of multiplet V1 of OII and the NLTE atomic computations of OII we study the density and temperature of a sample of HII regions. We find that the signature for oxygen rich clumps of high density and low temperature is absent in all objects of our sample: one extragalactic and eight Galactic HII regions. The temperatures derived from: a) recombination lines of OII, and b) recombination lines of HI together with Balmer continua are lower than those derived from forbidden lines, while the densities derived from recombination lines of OII are similar or smaller th…
HII regions are the ionized spheres surrounding high-mass stars. They are ideal targets for tracing Galactic structure because they are predominantly found in spiral arms and have high luminosities at infrared and radio wavelengths. In the Green Bank Telescope HII Region Discovery Survey (GBT HRDS) we found that >30% of first Galactic quadrant HII regions have multiple hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) velocities, which makes determining their Galactic locations and physical properties impossible. Here we make additional GBT RRL observations to determine the discrete HII region velocity …
The Southern HII Region Discovery Survey (SHRDS) is a survey of the third and fourth quadrants of the Galactic plane that will detect radio recombination line and continuum emission at cm-wavelengths from several hundred HII region candidates using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The targets for this survey come from the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions, and were identified based on mid-infrared and radio continuum emission. In this pilot project, two different configurations of the Compact Array Broad Band receiver and spectrometer system were used for short test observations. The …
We have observed the compact HII region complex nearest to the dynamical center of the Galaxy, G-0.02-0.07, using ALMA in the H42a recombination line, CS J=2-1, H13CO+ J=1-0, and SiO v=0, J=2-1 emission lines, and 86 GHz continuum emission. The HII regions HII-A to HII-C in the cluster are clearly resolved into a shell-like feature with a bright-half and a dark-half in the recombination line and continuum emission. The absorption features in the molecular emission lines show that HII-A, B and C are located on the near side of the 50 km/s Molecular Cloud (50MC) but HII-D is located on the far s…
We present very deep spectrophotometry of 14 bright extragalactic HII regions belonging to spiral, irregular, and blue compact galaxies. The data for 13 objects were taken with the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck I telescope. We have measured CII recombination lines in 10 of the objects and OII recombination lines in 8 of them. We have determined electron temperatures from line ratios of several ions, specially of low ionization potential ones. We have found a rather tight linear empirical relation between Te([NII]) and Te([OIII]). We have found that OII lines give always larger abundan…
We present deep echelle spectrophotometry of the brightest emission-line knots of the star-forming galaxies He 2-10, Mkn 1271, NGC 3125, NGC 5408, POX 4, SDSS J1253-0312, Tol 1457-262, Tol 1924-416 and the HII region Hubble V in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. The data have been taken with the Very Large Telescope Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph in the 3100-10420 Å range. We determine electron densities and temperatures of the ionized gas from several emission-line intensity ratios for all the objects. We derive the ionic abundances of C$^{2+}$ and/or O$^{2+}$ from fai…
We present a detailed characterization of the population of compact radio-continuum sources in W51 A using subarcsecond VLA and ALMA observations. We analyzed their 2-cm continuum, the recombination lines (RL's) H77$α$ and H30$α$, and the lines of $\rm H_{2}CO(3_{0,3}-2_{0,2})$, $\rm H_{2}CO(3_{2,1}-2_{2,0})$, and $\rm SO(6_{5}-5_{4})$. We derive diameters for 10/20 sources in the range $D \sim 10^{-3}$ to $\sim 10^{-2}$ pc, thus placing them in the regime of hypercompact HII regions (HC HII's). Their continuum-derived electron densities are in the range $n_{\rm e} \sim 10^4$ to $10^5$ cm$^{-3…
The dynamics of ionized gas around the W33 Main ultracompact HII region is studied using observations of hydrogen radio recombination lines and a detailed multiwavelength characterization of the massive star-forming region W33 Main is performed. We used the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to observe the H167$α$ recombination line at 1.4 GHz at an angular resolution of 10 arcsec, and Karl. G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) data acquired in the GLOSTAR survey to study the dynamics of ionized gas. We also observed the radio continuum at 1.4 GHz and 610 MHz with the GMRT and used GLOSTAR 4$-…
We detail tentative detections of low-frequency carbon radio recombination lines from within the Orion molecular cloud complex observed at 99-129 MHz. These tentative detections include one alpha transition and one beta transition over three locations and are located within the diffuse regions of dust observed in the infrared at 100umm, the Halpha emission detected in the optical, and the synchrotron radiation observed in the radio. With these observations, we are able to study the radiation mechanism transition from collisionally pumped to radiatively pumped within the HII regions of the Orio…
In the first paper of this series, we study the level population problem of recombining carbon ions. We focus our study on high quantum numbers anticipating observations of Carbon Radio Recombination Lines to be carried out by the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR). We solve the level population equation including angular momentum levels with updated collision rates up to high principal quantum numbers. We derive departure coefficients by solving the level population equation in the hydrogenic approximation and including low temperature dielectronic recombination effects. Our results in the hydrogeni…
We present a study of carbon radio recombination lines towards Cassiopeia A using LOFAR observations in the frequency range 10-33 MHz. Individual carbon $α$ lines are detected in absorption against the continuum at frequencies as low as 16 MHz. Stacking several C$α$ lines we obtain detections in the 11-16 MHz range. These are the highest signal-to-noise measurements at these frequencies. The peak optical depth of the C$α$ lines changes considerably over the 11-33 MHz range with the peak optical depth decreasing from 4$\times10^{-3}$ at 33 MHz to 2$\times10^{-3}$ at 11 MHz, while the line width…
We observed radio recombination lines (RRLs) toward the W51 molecular cloud complex, one of the most active star forming regions in our Galaxy. The UV radiation from young massive stars ionizes gas surrounding them to produce HII regions. Observations of the W51 IRS1 HII region were made with the Arecibo 305 m telescope. Of the full 1-10 GHz database, we have analyzed the observations between 4.5 and 5 GHz here. The steps involved in the analysis were: a) bandpass calibration using on-source/off-source observations; b) flux density calibration; c) removing spectral baselines due to errors in b…
Using the HI Emission/Absorption method, we resolve the kinematic distance ambiguity and derive distances for 149 of 182 (82%) HII regions discovered by the Green Bank Telescope HII Region Discovery Survey (GBT HRDS). The HRDS is an X-band (9GHz, 3cm) GBT survey of 448 previously unknown HII regions in radio recombination line and radio continuum emission. Here we focus on HRDS sources from 67deg. > l > 18deg., where kinematic distances are more reliable. The 25 HRDS sources in this zone that have negative recombination line velocities are unambiguously beyond the orbit of the Sun, up to 20kpc…
Observations of millimeter wavelength radio recombination lines (mm-RRLs) are used to search for HII regions in an unbiased way that is complementary to many of the more traditional methods previously used. We carried out targeted mm-RRL observations (39$\leq$ principal quantum number ($n$) $\leq$65 and $Δn$ = 1, 2, 3 and 4, i.e. H$nα$, H$nβ$, H$nγ$ and H$nδ$) using the IRAM 30m and Mopra 22m telescopes. We observed 976 compact dust clumps selected from a catalog of $\sim$10,000 ATLASGAL sources. We detected H$nα$ mm-RRL emission toward 178 clumps; H$nβ$, H$nγ$ and H$nδ$ were also detected tow…
We make a comprehensive study of HI absorption toward HII regions located within Galactic longitudes less than 10 degrees. Structures in the extreme inner Galaxy are traced using the longitude-velocity space distribution of this absorption. We find significant HI absorption associated with the Near and Far 3kpc Arms, the Connecting Arm, Banias Clump 1 and the H I Tilted Disk. We also constrain the line of sight distances to HII regions, by using HI absorption spectra together with the HII region velocities measured by radio recombination lines.
We present new radio recombination line observations of the previously unstudied HII region CTB 102. Line parameters are extracted and physical parameters describing the gas are calculated. We estimate the distance to CTB 102 to be 4.3 kpc. Through comparisons with HI and 1.42 GHz radio continuum data, we estimate the size of CTB 102 to be 100-130 pc, making it one of the largest HII regions known, comparable to the W4 complex. A stellar wind blown bubble model is presented as the best explanation for the observed morphology, size and velocities.
We present C and O abundances in the Magellanic Clouds derived from deep spectra of HII regions. The data have been taken with the Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph at the 8.2-m VLT. The sample comprises 5 HII regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 4 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We measure pure recombination lines (RLs) of CII and OII in all the objects, permitting to derive the abundance discrepancy factors (ADFs) for O^2+, as well as their O/H, C/H and C/O ratios. We compare the ADFs with those of other HII regions in different galaxies. The results suggest a possible …
We present deep spectrophotometry of several Hii regions in the nearby low-mass spiral galaxies NGC 300 and M33. The data have been taken with UVES and OSIRIS spectrographs attached to the 8m VLT and 10.4m GTC telescopes, respectively. We have derived precise values of the physical conditions for each object making use of several emission line-intensity ratios. In particular, we have obtained direct determinations of the electron temperature in all the observed objects. We detect pure recombination lines (RLs) of Cii and Oii in several of the Hii regions, permitting to derive their C/H and C/O…
In the second paper of the series, we have modeled low frequency carbon radio recombination lines (CRRL) from the interstellar medium. Anticipating the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) survey of Galactic CRRLs, we focus our study on the physical conditions of the diffuse cold neutral medium (CNM). We have used the improved departure coefficients computed in the first paper of the series to calculate line-to-continuum ratios. The results show that the line width and integrated optical depths of CRRL are sensitive probes of the electron density, gas temperature, and the emission measure of the cloud.…

Using Green Bank Telescope radio recombination line (RRL) data, we analyze the role of leaking radiation from HII regions in maintaining the ionization of the interstellar medium. We observed a sample of eight Galactic HII regions of various sizes, morphologies, and luminosities. For each region the hydrogen RRL intensity decreases roughly as a power-law with distance from the center of the region. This suggests that radiation leaking from the HII region is responsible for the majority of surrounding ionized gas producing RRL emission. Our results further indicate that the hydrogen RRL intensi…
We present results of long-slit spectroscopy in several slit positions that cover different morphological structures of the central parts of three bright Galactic HII regions: M8, M17 and NGC7635. We study the spatial distributions of a large number of nebular parameters such as the extinction coefficient, line fluxes, physical conditions and ionic abundances at the maximum spatial resolution attainable with our instrumentation. Particularly, our goal is to study the behaviour of the abundance discrepancy factor of O^{2+}, ADF(O^{2+}), defined as the logarithmic difference of the O^{2+} abunda…
We use the Low Frequency Array to perform a systematic high spectral resolution investigation of the low-frequency 33-78 MHz spectrum along the line of sight to Cassiopeia A. We complement this with a 304-386 MHz Westerbork Synthesis Radio telescope observation. In this first paper we focus on the carbon radio recombination lines. We detect Cn$α$ lines at -47 and -38 km s$^{-1}$ in absorption for quantum numbers n=438-584 and in emission for n=257-278 with high signal to noise. These lines are associated with cold clouds in the Perseus spiral arm component. Hn$α$ lines are detected in emission…
The Green Bank Telescope H II Region Discovery Survey (GBT HRDS) found hundreds of previously unknown Galactic regions of massive star formation by detecting hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) emission from candidate H II region targets. Since the HRDS nebulae lie at large distances from the Sun, they are located in previously unprobed zones of the Galactic disk. Here we derive the properties of helium and carbon RRL emission from HRDS nebulae. Our target sample is the subset of the HRDS that has visible helium or carbon RRLs. This criterion gives a total of 84 velocity components (14% of…
We report the detection of a new radio recombination line (RRL) maser object toward the IRS2 source in the MonR2 ultracompact HII region. The continuum emission at 1.3mm and 0.85mm and the H30a and H26a lines were observed with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at angular resolutions of about 0.5"-3". The SMA observations show that the MonR2-IRS2 source is very compact and remains unresolved at spatial scales <=400AU. Its continuum power spectrum at millimeter wavelengths is almost flat (alpha=-0.16, with S_nu proportional to nu^alpha), indicating that this source is dominated by optically thin fr…
We present radio and infrared observations of 4 hyper-compact HII regions and 4 ultra-compact HII regions in the southern Galactic plane. These objects were selected from a blind survey for UCHII regions using data from two new radio surveys of the southern sky; the Australia Telescope 20 GHz survey (AT20G) and the 2nd epoch Molonglo Galactic Plane Survey (MGPS-2) at 843 MHz. To our knowledge, this is the first blind radio survey for hyper- and ultra-compact HII regions. We have followed up these sources with the Australia Telescope Compact Array to obtain H70-alpha recombination line measurem…
Carbon Radio Recombination Lines trace the interface between molecular and atomic gas. We present GMRT observations of Carbon Radio Recombination Lines (CRRL), C$α$244-C$α$250 towards Cassiopeia A. We use a novel technique of stacking the emission lines in the visibility domain to obtain, for the first time, sub-pc resolution optical depth maps of these CRRLs. The emission shows a wide range of spatial and velocity structures, some of which are unresolved within our synthesis beam of 0.29 pc and velocity channel of 0.55 km/s. These variations in the emission optical depth and line width are in…
Optical integral field spectroscopy of the archetype protoplanetary disk LV2 in the Orion Nebula is presented, taken with the VLT FLAMES/Argus fibre array. The detection of recombination lines of CII and OII from this class of objects is reported, and the lines are utilized as abundance diagnostics. The study is complemented with the analysis of HST Faint Object Spectrograph ultraviolet and optical spectra of the target contained within the Argus field of view. By subtracting the local nebula background the intrinsic spectrum of the proplyd is obtained and its elemental composition is derived …
Carbon radio recombination lines (RRLs) at low frequencies (<=500 MHz) trace the cold, diffuse phase of the interstellar medium, which is otherwise difficult to observe. We present the detection of carbon RRLs in absorption in M82 with LOFAR in the frequency range of 48-64 MHz. This is the first extragalactic detection of RRLs from a species other than hydrogen, and below 1 GHz. Since the carbon RRLs are not detected individually, we cross-correlated the observed spectrum with a template spectrum of carbon RRLs to determine a radial velocity of 219 +- 9 km/s . Using this radial velocity, we st…
We present results from a search for radio recombination lines in three HI self-absorbing (HISA) clouds at 750 MHz and 321 MHz with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT), and in three Galactic Plane positions at 327 MHz with the Arecibo Telescope. We detect Carbon Recombination Lines (CRRLs) in the direction of DR4 and DR21, as well as in the galactic plane position G34.94+0.0. We additionally detect Hydrogen Recombination Lines (HRRLs) in emission in five of the six sightlines, and a Helium line at 750 MHz towards DR21. Combining our new data with 150 MHz LOFAR detections of CRRL abso…
The relative alignments of mid-infrared traced Galactic bubbles are compared to the orientation of the mean Galactic magnetic field in the disk. The orientations of bubbles in the northern Galactic plane were measured and are consistent with random orientations - no preferential alignment with respect to the Galactic disk was found. A subsample of HII region driven Galactic bubbles was identified, and as a single population they show random orientations. When this subsample was further divided into subthermal and suprathermal HII regions, based on hydrogren radio recombination linewidths, the …
Using data from the all-sky Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite, we made a catalog of over 8000 Galactic HII regions and HII region candidates by searching for their characteristic mid-infrared (MIR) morphology. WISE has sufficient sensitivity to detect the MIR emission from HII regions located anywhere in the Galactic disk. We believe this is the most complete catalog yet of regions forming massive stars in the Milky Way. Of the ~8000 cataloged sources, ~1500 have measured radio recombination line (RRL) or H$α$ emission, and are thus known to be HII regions. This sample impro…
We present deep Very Large Array H66$α$ radio recombination line (RRL) observations of the two cometary HII regions in DR 21. With these sensitive data, we test the "hybrid" bow shock/champagne flow model previously proposed for the DR 21 HII regions. The ionized gas down the tail of the southern HII region is redshifted by up to ~30 km/s with respect to the ambient molecular gas, as expected in the hybrid scenario. The RRL velocity structure, however, reveals the presence of two velocity components in both the northern and southern HII regions. This suggests that the ionized gas is flowing al…
As part of our ongoing HII Region Discovery Survey (HRDS), we report the Green Bank Telescope detection of 148 new angularly-large Galactic HII regions in radio recombination line (RRL) emission. Our targets are located at a declination greater than -45deg., which corresponds to 266deg. > l > -20deg. at b = 0deg. All sources were selected from the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions, and have infrared angular diameters >260''. The Galactic distribution of these "large" HII regions is similar to that of the previously-known sample of Galactic HII regions. The large HII region RRL line width an…
The CHAOS project is building a large database of LBT H II region spectra in nearby spiral galaxies to use direct abundances to better determine the dispersion in metallicity as a function of galactic radius. Here, we present CHAOS LBT observations of C II $λ$4267 emission detected in 10 H II regions in M 101, and, using a new photoionization model based ionization correction factor, we convert these measurements into total carbon abundances. A comparison with M101 C II recombination line observations from the literature shows excellent agreement, and we measure a relatively steep gradient in …
A significant fraction of the molecular gas in star-forming regions is irradiated by stellar UV photons. In these environments, the electron density (n_e) plays a critical role in the gas dynamics, chemistry, and collisional excitation of certain molecules. We determine n_e in the prototypical strongly irradiated photodissociation region (PDR), the Orion Bar, from the detection of new millimeter-wave carbon recombination lines (mmCRLs) and existing far-IR [13CII] hyperfine line observations. We detect 12 mmCRLs (including alpha, beta, and gamma transitions) observed with the IRAM 30m telescope…
The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will transform our understanding of the role of the cold, atomic gas in galaxy evolution. The interstellar medium (ISM) is the repository of stellar ejecta and the birthsite of new stars and, hence, a key factor in the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time. Cold, diffuse, atomic clouds are a key component of the ISM, but so far this phase has been difficult to study, because its main tracer, the HI 21 cm line, does not constrain the basic physical information of the gas (e.g., temperature, density) well. The SKA opens up the opportunity to study this component…
We present a review on the determination of the primordial helium abundance Yp, based on the study of hydrogen and helium recombination lines in extragalactic HII regions. We also discuss the observational determinations of the increase of helium to the increase of oxygen by mass Delta Y / Delta O, and compare them with predictions based on models of galactic chemical evolution.
The census of Galactic HII regions is vastly incomplete in the Southern sky. We use the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to observe 4-10 GHz radio continuum and hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) emission from candidate HII regions in the Galactic zone 259 deg < l < 344 deg, |b| < 4 deg. In this first data release, we target the brightest HII region candidates and observe 282 fields in the direction of at least one previously-known or candidate HII region. We detect radio continuum emission and RRL emission in 275 (97.5%) and 258 (91.5%) of these fields, respectively. We catalog t…
Atomic hydrogen masers occur in recombination plasmas in sufficiently dense HII regions. These hydrogen recombination line (HRL) masers have been observed in a handful of objects to date and the analysis of the atomic physics involved has been rudimentary. In this work a new model of HRL masers is presented which uses an nl-model to describe the atomic populations interacting with free-free radiation from the plasma, and an escape probability framework to deal with radiative transfer effects. The importance of including the collisions between angular momentum quantum states and the free-free e…
HII regions made of gas ionized by radiations from young massive stars, are widely distributed in the Milky Way. They are tracers for star formation, and their distributions are correlated with the Galactic spiral structure. Radio recombination lines (RRLs) of hydrogen and other atoms allows for the precisest determination of physical parameters such as temperature and density. However, RRLs at around 1.4 GHz from HII regions are weak and their detections are difficult. As a result, only a limited number of detections have been obtained yet. The 19-beam receiver on board of the Five-hundred-me…
The Southern HII Region Discovery Survey (SHRDS) is a 900 hour Australia Telescope Compact Array 4-10 GHz radio continuum and radio recombination line (RRL) survey of Galactic HII regions and infrared-identified HII region candidates in the southern sky. For this data release, we reprocess all previously published SHRDS data and include an additional ~450 hours of observations. The search for new HII regions is now complete over the range 259 deg < Galactic longitude < 346 deg, |Galactic latitude| < 4 deg for HII region candidates with predicted 6 GHz continuum peak brightnesses >30 mJy/beam. …
We present the first detailed study of the large, ~30 pc diameter, inner-Galaxy HII region W 39. Radio recombination line observations combined with HI absorption spectra and Galactic rotation models show that the region lies at V(LSR) = +65.4+/-0.5 km/s corresponding to a near kinematic distance of 4.5+/-0.2 kpc. Analysis of radio continuum emission shows that the HII region is being powered by a cluster of OB stars with a combined hydrogen-ionizing luminosity of log(Q) >=50, and that there are three compact HII regions located on the periphery of W 39, each with log(Q)~48.5 (single O7 - O9 V…
We conducted a long-slit spectrophotometry analysis to obtain the chemical abundances of seven metal-poor HII regions in three galaxies: UM 160, UM 420, and TOL 0513-393. The data have been taken with the Focal Reducer Low Dispersion Spectrograph 1 (FORS1) at the 8.2-m Very Large Telescope. We derived the physical conditions and the chemical abundances of N, O, Ne, S, Ar, and Cl. We also performed a detailed analysis that involves abundance determinations using the $t^2$ formalism. Based on HeI recombination line intensity ratios, together with the Helio14 code, we derived the abundance of He.…
We present chemical evolution models of the Galactic disk with different Z-dependent yields. We find that a moderate mass loss rate for massive stars of solar metallicity produces an excellent fit to the observed C/H and C/O gradients of the Galactic disk. The best model also fits: the H, He, C, and O abundances derived from recombination lines of M17, the protosolar abundances, and the C/O-O/H, C/Fe-Fe/H, and O/Fe-Fe/H relations derived from solar vicinity stars. The agreement of the model with the protosolar abundances implies that the Sun originated at a galactocentric distance similar to th…
Quantitative understanding of the interstellar medium requires knowledge of its physical conditions. Low frequency carbon radio recombination lines (CRRLs) trace cold interstellar gas, and can be used to determine its physical conditions (e.g., electron temperature and density). In this work we present spatially resolved observations of the low frequency ($\leq390$ MHz) CRRLs centered around C$268α$, C$357α$, C$494α$ and C$539α$ towards Cassiopeia A on scales of $\leq1.2$ pc. We compare the spatial distribution of CRRLs with other ISM tracers. This comparison reveals a spatial offset between t…
We report the detection of radio recombination line emission (RRL) using the Arecibo Observatory at X-band (9GHz, 3cm) from 37 previously unknown HII regions in the Galactic zone 66 deg. > l > 31 deg. and |b| < 1 deg. This Arecibo HII Region Discovery Survey (Arecibo HRDS) is a continuation of the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) HRDS. The targets for the Arecibo HRDS have spatially coincident 24 micron and 20 cm emission of a similar angular morphology and extent. To take advantage of Arecibo's sensitivity and small beam size, sources in this sample are fainter, smaller in angle, or in more crowded…
Context. The combined use of carbon radio recombination lines (CRRLs) and the 158 $μ$m-[CII] line is a powerful tool for the study of the energetics and physical conditions (e.g., temperature and density) of photodissociation regions (PDRs). However, there are few observational studies that exploit this synergy. Aims. Here we explore the relation between CRRLs and the 158 $μ$m-[CII] line in light of new observations and models. Methods. We present new and existing observations of CRRLs in the frequency range 0.15--230 GHz with ALMA, VLA, the GBT, Effelsberg 100m, and LOFAR towards Orion~A (M42…
We present the first detection of carbon radio recombination line absorption along the line of sight to Cygnus A. The observations were carried out with the LOw Frequency ARray in the 33 to 57 MHz range. These low frequency radio observations provide us with a new line of sight to study the diffuse, neutral gas in our Galaxy. To our knowledge this is the first time that foreground Milky Way recombination line absorption has been observed against a bright extragalactic background source. By stacking 48 carbon $α$ lines in the observed frequency range we detect carbon absorption with a signal-to…
The Green Bank Telescope HII Region Discovery Survey has doubled the number of known HII regions in the Galactic zone 343deg.\leql\leq67deg. with |b|\leq1deg. We detected 603 discrete hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) components at 9GHz (3cm) from 448 targets. Our targets were selected based on spatially coincident mid-infrared and 20cm radio continuum emission. Such sources are almost invariably HII regions; we detected hydrogen RRL emission from 95% of our target sample. The sensitivity of the Green Bank Telescope and the power of its spectrometer together made this survey possible. He…
Centaurus A (Cen A) is one of the most famous galaxies hosting an active galactic nucleus (AGN), where the interaction between AGN activities and surrounding interstellar and intergalactic media has been investigated. Recent studies reported detections of the Hα emission from clouds in the galactic halo toward the northeast and southwest of the nucleus of Cen A, suggesting that AGN jets may have triggered star formation there. We performed near-infrared line mapping of Cen A with the IRSF 1.4-m telescope, using the narrow-band filter tuned for Paβ, from which we find that the Paβ emission is n…
The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) free-free foreground emission map is used to identify diffuse ionized regions (DIR) in the Galaxy (Rahman & Murray 2010). It has been found that the 18 most luminous WMAP sources produce more than half of the total ionizing luminosity of the Galaxy. We observed radio recombination lines (RRLs) toward the luminous WMAP source G49.75-0.45 with the Green Bank Telescope near 1.4 GHz. Hydrogen RRL is detected toward the source but no helium line is detected, implying that n_He+/n_H+ < 0.024. This limit puts severe constraint on the ionizing spectrum. …

Sgr E is a massive star formation complex found toward the Galactic center that consists of numerous discrete, compact HII regions. It is located at the intersection between the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) and the far dust lane of the Galactic bar, similar to "hot spots" seen in external galaxies. Compared with other Galactic star formation complexes, the Sgr E complex is unusual because its HII regions all have similar radio luminosities and angular extents, and they are deficient in ~10micron emission from their photodissociation regions (PDRs). Our Green Bank Telescope (GBT) radio recombin…
We present the first detection of extragalactic hydrogen recombination line maser emission in the H26alpha transition toward the inner 13.5 pc nuclear region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 using ALMA data. In regions with complex continuum emission (dust, free-free and synchrotron) we propose to use the recombination line spectral index, $α_\mathrm{L}$ ($S_\mathrm{L}\cdot Δv \propto ν^{α_\mathrm{L}}$), between the H30alpha and the H26alpha lines to study the structure of ultra-compact HII regions and to identify maser emission ($α_\mathrm{L}> 2.1$) from ionized winds. The measured values of $…
Context. The derived physical parameters for young HII regions are normally determined assuming the emission region to be optically thin. However, this assumption is unlikely to hold for young HII regions such as hyper-compact HII(HCHII) and ultra-compact HII(UCHII) regions and leads to the underestimation of their properties. This can be overcome by fitting the SEDs over a wide range of radio frequencies. Aims. The two primary goals of this study are (1) to determine the physical properties of young HII regions from radio SEDs in the search for potential HCHII regions, and (2) to use these ph…
