The surface tension of quark matter plays a crucial role for the possibility of quark matter nucleation during the formation of compact stellar objects and also for the existence of a mixed phase within hybrid stars. However, despite its importance, this quantity does not have a well established numerical value. Some early estimates have predicted that, at zero temperature, the value falls within the wide range $γ_0\approx10-300{\rm\ MeV/fm^2}$ but, very recently, different model applications have reduced these numerical values to fall within the range $γ_0\approx5-30{\rm\ MeV/fm^2}$ which would favor the phase conversion process as well as the appearance of a mixed phase in hybrid stars. In magnetars one should also account for the presence of very high magnetic fields which may reach up to about $ eB\approx 3-30\, m_π^2$ ($B \approx 10^{19}-10^{20} \,G$) at the core of the star so that it may also be important to analyze how the presence of a magnetic field affects the surface tension. With this aim we consider magnetized two flavor quark matter, described by the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We show that although the surface tension oscillates around its B=0 value, when $0 < eB \lesssim 10 \, m_π^2$, it only reaches values which are still relatively small. For $eB \approx 5\, m_π^2$ the B=0 surface tension value drops by about 30% while for $eB \gtrsim 10\, m_π^2$ it quickly raises with the field intensity so that the phase conversion and the presence of a mixed phase should be suppressed if extremely high fields are present. We also investigate how thermal effects influence the surface tension for magnetized quark matter.
We study the surface tension of highly magnetized three flavor quark matter within the formalism of multiple reflection expansion (MRE). Quark matter is described as a mixture of free Fermi gases composed by quarks $u$, $d$, $s$ and electrons, in chemical equilibrium under weak interactions. Due to the presence of strong magnetic fields the particles' transverse motion is quantized into Landau levels, and the surface tension has a different value in the parallel and transverse directions with respect to the magnetic field. We calculate the transverse and longitudinal surface tension for differ…
We review the stability of magnetized strange quark matter (MSQM) within the phenomenological MIT bag model, taking into account the variation of the relevant input parameters, namely, the strange quark mass, baryon density, magnetic field and bag parameter. A comparison with magnetized asymmetric quark matter in $β$-equilibrium as well as with strange quark matter (SQM) is presented. We obtain that the energy per baryon for MSQM decreases as the magnetic field increases, and its minimum value at vanishing pressure is lower than the value found for SQM, which implies that MSQM is more stable t…
Magnetized strange quark stars, composed of strange quark matter (SQM) and self-bound by strong interactions, can be formed if the energy per baryon of magnetized SQM is less than that of the most stable $^{56}$Fe nucleus under the zero external pressure and temperature. Utilizing the MIT bag model description of magnetized SQM under charge neutrality and beta equilibrium conditions, the corresponding absolute stability window in the parameter space of the theory is determined. It is shown that there exists the maximum magnetic field strength allowed by the condition of absolute stability of m…
We calculate the spectral function in pseudoscalar (scalar) channel in the high temperature phase of QCD in presence of a background magnetic field. Spatial and temporal screening masses are determined from the long distance behavior of the corresponding correlation functions.
In this article, we calculate the magnetization and other thermodynamical quantities for strongly magnetized quark matter within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at zero temperature. We assume two scenarios, chemically equilibrated charge neutral matter present in the interior of compact stars and zero-strangeness isospin-symmetric matter created in nuclear experiments. We show that the magnetization oscillates with density but in a much more smooth form than what was previously shown in the literature. As a consequence, we do not see the unphysical behavior in the pressure in the direction perpen…
The effects of longitudinal bulk viscous pressure on the heavy quark dynamics have been estimated in a strongly magnetized quark-gluon plasma within the Fokker-Planck approach. The bulk viscous modification to the momentum distribution of bulk degrees of freedom has been obtained in the presence of a magnetic field while incorporating the realistic equation of state of the hot magnetized QCD medium. As the magnetic field breaks the isotropy of the medium, the analysis is done along the directions longitudinal and transverse to the field. The longitudinal bulk viscous contribution is seen to ha…
We present a calculation of the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficients in a quark-gluon plasma under the presence of a strong external magnetic field, within the Lowest Landau Level (LLL) approximation. In particular, we apply the Hard Thermal Loop (HTL) technique for the resummed effective gluon propagator, generalized for a hot and magnetized medium. Using the derived effective HTL gluon propagator and the LLL quark propagator we analytically derive the full results for the longitudinal and transverse momentum diffusion coefficients as well as the energy losses for charm and bottom quar…
The stability of magnetized strange quark matter (MSQM) is studied in the MIT bag model with the density dependent bag pressure. In the consistent thermodynamic description of MSQM, the quark chemical potentials, the total thermodynamic potential and the anisotropic pressure acquire the corresponding additional term proportional to the density derivative of the bag pressure. The model parameter space is determined, for which MSQM is absolutely stable, i.e., its energy per baryon is less than that of the most stable $^{56}$Fe nucleus under the zero external pressure and vanishing temperature. I…
The structure of a magnetized quark-hybrid stars (QHS) is modeled using a standard relativistic mean-field equation of state (EoS) for the description of hadronic matter. For quark matter we consider a bag model EoS which is modified perturbatively to account for the presence of a uniform magnetic field. The mass-radius (M-R) relationship, gravitational redshift and rotational Kepler periods of such stars are compared with those of standard neutron stars (NS).
The impact of a strong magnetic field, varying with the total baryon number density, on thermodynamic properties of strange quark matter (SQM) in the core of a magnetized hybrid star is considered at zero temperature within the framework of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) bag model. It is clarified that the central magnetic field strength is bound from above by the value at which the derivative of the longitudinal pressure with respect to the baryon number density vanishes first somewhere in the quark core under varying the central field. Above this upper bound, the instability…
In this erratum we present the correct result for the magnetization of the three flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model which was originally obtained by us in Phys Rev C91, 065205 (2015).
In this paper, we find the heat capacity of the magnetic dual chiral density wave (MDCDW) phase of dense quark matter and use it to explore the feasibility of this phase for a neutron star interior. MDCDW is a spatially inhomogeneous phase of quark matter known to be favored at intermediate densities over the chirally symmetric phase and the color-flavor-locked superconducting phase. By comparing our result to the lower limit of the core heat capacity established from observations of transiently accreting neutron stars, we show that the heat capacity of MDCDW quark matter is well above that lo…
We study nonlinear waves in a nonrelativistic ideal and cold quark gluon plasma immersed in a strong uniform magnetic field. In the context of nonrelativistic hydrodynamics with an external magnetic field we derive a nonlinear wave equation for baryon density perturbations, which can be written as a reduced Ostrovsky equation. We find analytical solutions and identify the effects of the magnetic field.
We study neutral and charged meson properties in magnetic field. Taking bosolization method in a two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, we derive effective meson Lagrangian density with minimal coupling to the magnetic field, by employing derivative expansion for both the meson fields and Schwinger phases. We extract from the effective Lagrangian density the meson curvature, pole and screening masses. As the only Goldstone mode, the neutral pion controls the thermodynamics of the system and propagates the lang range quark interaction. The magnetic field breaks down the space symmetry, and the q…
Various thermodynamic quantities and the phase diagram of strongly interacting hot and dense magnetized quark matter are obtained with the $ 2 $-flavour Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with Polyakov loop considering finite values of the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks. Susceptibilities associated with constituent quark mass and traced Polyakov loop are used to evaluate chiral and deconfinement transition temperatures. It is found that, inclusion of the AMM of the quarks in presence of the background magnetic field results in a substantial decrease in the chiral as well as deconfinement …
The quasiparticle model is extended to investigate the properties of strange quark matter in a strong magnetic field at finite densities. For the density-dependent quark mass, self-consistent thermodynamic treatment is obtained with an additional effective bag parameter, which depends not only on the density but also on the magnetic field strength. The magnetic field makes strange quark matter more stable energetically when the magnetic field strength is less than a critical value of the order $10^7$ Gauss depending on the QCD scale $Λ$. Instead of being a monotonic function of the density for…
We investigate properties of strange quark matter in the framework of SU(3) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio(NJL) model with vector interaction under strong magnetic fields. The effects of vector-isoscalar and vector-isovector interaction on the equation of state of strange quark matter are investigated, and it is found that the equation of state is not sensitive to the vector-isovector interaction, however, a repulsive interaction in the vector-isoscalar channel gives a stiffer equation of state for cold dense quark matter. In the presence of magnetic field, gluons will be magnetized via quark loops, and …
We study magnetized orbifold models. We assume the localized Fayet-Iliopoulos terms and the corresponding gauge background. Such terms lead to strong localization of zero-mode wavefunc- tions. In this setup, we compute quark mass matrices.
We study the surface tension of hot, highly magnetized three flavor quark matter droplets, focusing specifically on the thermodynamic conditions prevailing in neutron stars, hot lepton rich protoneutron stars and neutron star mergers. We explore the role of temperature, baryon number density, trapped neutrinos, droplet size and magnetic fields within the multiple reflection expansion formalism (MRE), assuming that astrophysical quark matter can be described as a mixture of free Fermi gases composed by quarks $u$, $d$, $s$, electrons and neutrinos, in chemical equilibrium under weak interaction…
We investigate the screening masses of neutral pions and sigma mesons in hot and magnetized quark matter in the framework of a two-flavor lattice-improved Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with a magnetic field dependent coupling constant, which is determined by utilizing the results from lattice QCD simulations. Since such model can well reproduce inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC), by comparing with the standard NJL model, we systemically analyze the impacts of IMC on the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the longitudinal and transverse screening masses of the chiral partners, i.e. π^…
In the fractional nonrelativistic potential model, the decomposition of heavy quarkonium in a hot magnetized medium is investigated. The analytical solution of the fractional radial Schrodinger equation for the hot-magnetized interaction potential is displayed by using the conformable fractional Nikiforov-Uvarov method. Analytical expressions for the energy eigenvalues and the radial wave function are obtained for arbitrary quantum numbers. Next, we study the charmonium and bottmonium binding energies for different magnetic field values in the thermal medium. The effect of the fractional param…
If a first-order phase transition separates nuclear and quark matter at large baryon density, an interface between these two phases has a nonzero surface tension. We calculate this surface tension within a nucleon-meson model for domain walls and bubbles. Various methods and approximations are discussed and compared, including a numerical evaluation of the spatial profile of the interface. We also compute the surface tension at the other first-order phase transitions of the model: the nuclear liquid-gas transition and, in the parameter regime where it exists, the direct transition from the vac…
The thermomagnetic behavior of quark-gluon plasma has recently received a lot of attention. In this work, we make use of the extended self-consistent quasiparticle model to study the thermodynamic properties of magnetized (2+1) flavor quark-gluon plasma. The system is considered as a non-interacting system of quasiparticles with masses depending on both temperature and magnetic field. This allows obtaining the equation of state of the system and the other thermodynamic properties such as the speed of sound. We use the extended self-consistent model to obtain the magnetization and show that QGP…
We have pointed out the possibility of quantum Hall effect or quantum patterns of transportation in a degenerate strongly magnetized quark matter, which might be expected inside a highly dense compact star. An anisotropic pattern of electrical conductivity and resistivity tensor in classical and quantum cases is explored by considering cyclotron motion and Landau quantization respectively. With increasing magnetic field, classical to quantum transitions are realized through enhanced/reduced resistivity/conductivity with jumping pattern. Considering QCD relaxation time scale of 10 fm, $eB\appro…
A magnetic field independent regularization scheme (zMFIR) based on the Hurwitz-Riemann zeta function is introduced. The new technique is applied to the regularization of the mean-field thermodynamic potential and mass gap equation within the SU(2) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a hot and magnetized medium. The equivalence of the new and the standard MFIR scheme is demonstrated. The neutral meson pole mass is calculated in a hot and magnetized medium and the advantages of using the new regularization scheme are shown.

We study wave propagation in a non-relativistic cold quark-gluon plasma immersed in a constant magnetic field. Starting from the Euler equation we derive linear wave equations and investigate their stability and causality. We use a generic form for the equation of state, the EOS derived from the MIT bag model and also a variant of the this model which includes gluon degrees of freedom. The results of this analysis may be relevant for perturbations propagating through the quark matter phase in the core of compact stars and also for perturbations propagating in the low temperature quark-gluon pl…
The magnetic field and density behaviors of various thermodynamic quantities of strange quark matter under compact star conditions are investigated in the framework of the thermodynamically self-consistent quasiparticle model. For individual species, a larger number density $n_i$ leads to a larger magnetic field strength threshold that align all particles parallel or antiparallel to the magnetic field. Accordingly, in contrast to the finite baryon density effect which reduces the spin polarization of magnetized strange quark matter, the magnetic field effect leads to an enhancement of it. We a…
The expulsion of magnetic flux lines from a growing superconducting core of a quark star has been investigated. The idea of impurity diffusion in molten alloys and an identical mechanism of baryon number transport from hot quark-gluon-plasma phase to hadronic phase during quark-hadron phase transition in the early universe, micro-second after big bang has been used. The possibility of Mullins-Sekerka normal-superconducting interface instability has also been studied.
It was recently derived that the QCD running coupling is a function of the magnetic field strength under the strong magnetic field approximation. Inspired by this progress and based on the self-consistent solutions of gap equations, the properties of two-flavor and three-flavor quark matter are studied in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with a magnetic-field dependent running coupling. We find that the dynamical quark masses as functions of the magnetic field strength are not monotonous in the fully chirally broken phase. Furthermore, the stability of magnetized quark matter with…
We study the interface effects of quark-hadron mixed phase in compact stars. The properties of nuclear matter are obtained based on the relativistic-mean-field model. For the quark phase, we adopt perturbation model with running quark masses and coupling constant. At certain choices of parameter sets, it is found that varying the quark-hadron interface tension will have sizable effects on the radii ($ΔR \approx 600$ m) and tidal deformabilities ($ΔΛ/Λ\approx 50\%$) of hybrid stars. These provide possibilities for us to constrain the quark-hadron interface tension with future gravitational wave…
The possible different phases of cold quark matter in the presence of a finite magnetic field and chemical potential are obtained within the SU(3) NJL model for two parameter sets often used in the literature. Although the general pattern is the same in both cases, the number of intermediate phases is parameter dependent. The chiral susceptibilities, as usually defined, are different not only for the s-quark as compared with the two light quarks, but also for the u and d-quarks, yielding non identical crossover lines for the light quark sector.

Dilepton production rate (DPR) from hot and dense quark matter is studied in the presence of an arbitrary external magnetic field using the 2-flavour Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks is taken into consideration while calculating the constituent quark mass as well as the DPR from the thermo-magnetic medium. An infinite number of quark Landau levels is incorporated so that no approximations are made on the strength of the background magnetic field. The analytic structure of the two point vector current correlation function in the complex energy p…
Some properties of magnetized two flavor color superconducting (2SC) cold dense quark matter under compact star conditions (COSC) are investigated within a $SU(2)_f$ Nambu Jona-Lasinio type model. We study the phase diagram for several model parametrizations. The features of each phase are analyzed through the behavior of the chiral and superconducting condensates for increasing chemical potential or magnetic field. We show how the phases are modified in the presence of $β$-equilibrium as well as color and electric charge neutrality conditions.
We investigate the effect of electric and color charge neutrality on the two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) phase of cold and dense quark matter in presence of constant external magnetic fields and at moderate baryon densities. Within the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, we study the inter-dependent evolution of the quark's BCS gap and constituent mass with increasing density and magnetic field. While confirming previous results derived for the highly magnetized 2SC phase with color neutrality alone, we obtain new results as a consequence of imposing charge neutrality. In t…
We consider two flavor magnetized quark matter in the presence of a repulsive vector coupling ($G_V$) devoting special attention to the low temperature region of the phase diagram to show how this type of interaction counterbalances the effects produced by a strong magnetic field. The most important effects occur at intermediate and low temperatures affecting the location of the critical end point as well as the region of first order chiral transitions. When $G_V=0$ the presence of high magnetic fields ($eB \ge 10 m_π^2$) increases the density coexistence region with respect to the case when $…
The properties of non-interacting $σ$ and $π^{0}$ mesons are studied at finite temperature, chemical potential and in the presence of a constant magnetic field. To do this, the energy dispersion relations of these particles, including nontrivial form factors, are derived using a derivative expansion of the effective action of a two-flavor, hot and magnetized Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model up to second order. The temperature dependence of the pole and screening masses as well as the directional refraction indices of magnetized neutral mesons are explored for fixed magnetic fields and chemical …
The surface tension of quark matter plays a crucial role for the possibility of quark matter nucleation during the formation of compact stellar objects, because it determines the nucleation rate and the associated critical size. However, this quantity is not well known and the theoretical estimates fall within a wide range, $γ_0 \approx 5-300 MeV/fm^2$. We show here that once the equation of state is available one may use a geometrical approach to obtain a numerical value for the surface tension that is consistent with the model approximations adopted. We illustrate this method within the two-…
We study weakly nonlinear wave perturbations propagating in a cold nonrelativistic and magnetized ideal quark-gluon plasma. We show that such perturbations can be described by the Ostrovsky equation. The derivation of this equation is presented for the baryon density perturbations. Then we show that the generalized nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation can be derived from the Ostrovsky equation for the description of quasi-harmonic wave trains. This equation is modulationally stable for the wave number $k < k_m$ and unstable for $k > k_m$, where $k_m$ is the wave number where the group veloci…
We study the effect of a strong constant magnetic field, generated in relativistic heavy ion collisions, on the heavy quark complex potential. We work in the strong magnetic field limit with the lowest Landau level approximation. We find that the screening of the real part of the potential increases with the increase in the magnetic field. Therefore, we expect less binding of the $ Q\bar{Q} $ pair in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The imaginary part of the potential increases in magnitude with the increase in the magnetic field, leading to an increase of the width of the quarkonium s…
The self-consistent quasiparticle model has been successful in studying QCD thermodynamics. In this model, the medium effects are taken into account by considering quarks and gluons as quasiparticles with temperature-dependent masses which are proportional to the plasma frequency. The present work involves the extension of this model in the presence of magnetic fields. We have included the effect of the magnetic field by considering relativistic Landau Levels. The quasiparticle masses are then found to be dependent on both temperature and magnetic field. The thermomagnetic mass thus defined al…
In this work, we compute the hard thermal loop pressure of quark-gluon plasma within strong magnetic field approximation at one-loop order. Magnetic field breaks the rotational symmetry of the system. As a result, the pressure of QGP becomes anisotropic and one finds two different pressures along the longitudinal (along the magnetic field direction) and transverse direction. Similarly, the second-order quark number susceptibility, which represents the fluctuation of the net quark number density, also becomes anisotropic. We compute the second order QNS of deconfined QCD matter in strong field …
We study the behavior of two-flavor dense quark matter under the influence of an external magnetic field in the framework of a nonlocal chiral quark model with separable interactions. The nonlocality is incorporated in the model by using a Gaussian form factor. It is found that for low and moderate values of magnetic field there is a decrease of the critical chiral restoration chemical potential $μ_c$, i.e. an inverse magnetic catalysis effect is observed. For larger values of $eB$ the behavior of $μ_c$ becomes more or less flat, depending on the parametrization. Within the considered parametr…
Using the Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model the strange quark chiral phase transition and the effect of its current mass on a hot magnetized three flavor quark matter at zero chemical potential is investigated. The impact of the 't Hooft mixing term on the restoration of the chiral symmetry on the light and strange sectors is studied and the critical temperature dependence on the magnetic field strength of the chiral strange transition is analyzed. It is shown that the s quark is much less sensitive to the magnetic field than the light quarks. Due to the 't Hooft term, it has a strong influe…
The magnetized phase diagram for three-flavor quark matter is studied within the Polyakov extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The order parameters are analyzed with special emphasis on the strange quark condensate. We show that the presence of an external magnetic field induces several critical endpoints (CEPs) in the strange sector, which arise due to the multiple phase transitions that the strange quark undergoes. The spinodal and binodal regions of the phase transitions are shown to increase with external magnetic field strength. The influence of strong magnetic fields on the isentropic tra…
Employing the Polyakov extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, we determine the net-baryon number fluctuations of magnetized three-flavor quark matter. We show that the magnetic field changes the nature of the strange quark transition from crossover to first-order at low temperatures. In fact, the strange quark undergoes multiple first-order phase transitions and several critical end points emerge in the phase diagram.
We derive a general expression for the absorptive part of the one-loop photon polarization tensor in a strongly magnetized quark-gluon plasma at nonzero baryon chemical potential. To demonstrate the application of the main result in the context of heavy-ion collisions, we study the effect of a nonzero baryon chemical potential on the photon emission rate. The rate and the ellipticity of photon emission are studied numerically as a function the transverse momentum (energy) for several values of temperature and chemical potential. When the chemical potential is small compared to the temperature,…
We explore the phase structure of dense magnetized quark matter when a repulsive vector interaction, parametrized by $G_V$, is present. Our results show that for a given magnetic field intensity ($B$) one may find a value of $G_V$ for which quark matter may coexist at three different baryonic density values leading to the appearance of two triple points in the phase diagram which have not been observed before. Another novel result is that at high pressure and low temperature we observe a first order transition which presents a negative slope in the $P-T$ that is reminiscent of the solid-liquid…
