In this paper, the problem of de-noising of an image contaminated with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is studied. This subject has been continued to be an open problem in signal processing for more than 50 years. In the present paper, we suggest a method based on global clustering of image constructing blocks. Noting that the type of clustering plays an important role in clustering-based de-noising methods, we address two questions about the clustering. First, which parts of data should be considered for clustering? Second, what data clustering method is suitable for de-noising? Clustering is exploited to learn an over complete dictionary. By obtaining sparse decomposition of the noisy image blocks in terms of the dictionary atoms, the de-noised version is achieved. Experimental results show that our dictionary learning framework outperforms traditional dictionary learning methods such as K-SVD.
Image textures, as a kind of local variations, provide important information for human visual system. Many image textures, especially the small-scale or stochastic textures are rich in high-frequency variations, and are difficult to be preserved. Current state-of-the-art denoising algorithms typically adopt a nonlocal approach consisting of image patch grouping and group-wise denoising filtering. To achieve a better image denoising while preserving the variations in texture, we first adaptively group high correlated image patches with the same kinds of texture elements (texels) via an adaptive…

In this paper, an image denoising algorithm is proposed for salt and pepper noise. First, a generative model is built on a patch as a basic unit and then the algorithm locates the image noise within that patch in order to better describe the patch and obtain better subsequent clustering. Second, the algorithm classifies patches using a generative clustering method, thus providing additional similarity information for noise repair and suppressing the interference of noise, abandoning those categories that consist of a smaller number of patches. Finally, the algorithm builds a non-local switchin…

Recently, the application of low rank minimization to image denoising has shown remarkable denoising results which are equivalent or better than those of the existing state-of-the-art algorithms. However, due to iterative nature of low rank optimization, estimation of residual noise is an essential requirement after each iteration. Currently, this noise is estimated by using the filtered noise in the previous iteration without considering the geometric structure of the given image. This estimate may be affected in the presence of moderate and severe levels of noise. To obtain a more reliable e…
Group sparse representation has shown promising results in image debulrring and image inpainting in GSR [3] , the main reason that lead to the success is by exploiting Sparsity and Nonlocal self-similarity (NSS) between patches on natural images, and solve a regularized optimization problem. However, directly adapting GSR[3] in image denoising yield very unstable and non-satisfactory results, to overcome these issues, this paper proposes a progressive image denoising algorithm that successfully adapt GSR [3] model and experiments shows the superior performance than some of the state-of-the-art…
The paper proposes a new high spatial resolution hyperspectral (HR-HS) image estimation method based on convex optimization. The method assumes a low spatial resolution HS (LR-HS) image and a guide image as observations, where both observations are contaminated by noise. Our method simultaneously estimates an HR-HS image and a noiseless guide image, so the method can utilize spatial information in a guide image even if it is contaminated by heavy noise. The proposed estimation problem adopts hybrid spatio-spectral total variation as regularization and evaluates the edge similarity between HR-H…

We consider image denoising problems formulated as variational problems. It is known that Hamilton-Jacobi PDEs govern the solution of such optimization problems when the noise model is additive. In this work, we address certain non-additive noise models and show that they are also related to Hamilton-Jacobi PDEs. These findings allow us to establish new connections between additive and non-additive noise imaging models. Specifically, we study how the solutions to these optimization problems depend on the parameters and the observed images. We show that the optimal values are ruled by some Hami…

Image denoising is a classical problem in low level computer vision. Model-based optimization methods and deep learning approaches have been the two main strategies for solving the problem. Model-based optimization methods are flexible for handling different inverse problems but are usually time-consuming. In contrast, deep learning methods have fast testing speed but the performance of these CNNs is still inferior. To address this issue, here we propose a novel deep residual learning model that combines the dilated residual convolution and multi-scale convolution groups. Due to the complex pa…

Inverse problems in image processing are typically cast as optimization tasks, consisting of data-fidelity and stabilizing regularization terms. A recent regularization strategy of great interest utilizes the power of denoising engines. Two such methods are the Plug-and-Play Prior (PnP) and Regularization by Denoising (RED). While both have shown state-of-the-art results in various recovery tasks, their theoretical justification is incomplete. In this paper, we aim to bridge between RED and PnP, enriching the understanding of both frameworks. Towards that end, we reformulate RED as a convex op…
Patch-based denoising algorithms like BM3D have achieved outstanding performance. An important idea for the success of these methods is to exploit the recurrence of similar patches in an input image to estimate the underlying image structures. However, in these algorithms, the similar patches used for denoising are obtained via Nearest Neighbour Search (NNS) and are sometimes not optimal. First, due to the existence of noise, NNS can select similar patches with similar noise patterns to the reference patch. Second, the unreliable noisy pixels in digital images can bring a bias to the patch sea…

We propose a data-dependent denoising procedure to restore noisy images. Different from existing denoising algorithms which search for patches from either the noisy image or a generic database, the new algorithm finds patches from a database that contains only relevant patches. We formulate the denoising problem as an optimal filter design problem and make two contributions. First, we determine the basis function of the denoising filter by solving a group sparsity minimization problem. The optimization formulation generalizes existing denoising algorithms and offers systematic analysis of the …
In this study, the problem of computing a sparse representation of multi-dimensional visual data is considered. In general, such data e.g., hyperspectral images, color images or video data consists of signals that exhibit strong local dependencies. A new computationally efficient sparse coding optimization problem is derived by employing regularization terms that are adapted to the properties of the signals of interest. Exploiting the merits of the learnable regularization techniques, a neural network is employed to act as structure prior and reveal the underlying signal dependencies. To solve…

Tensor completion is a technique of filling missing elements of the incomplete data tensors. It being actively studied based on the convex optimization scheme such as nuclear-norm minimization. When given data tensors include some noises, the nuclear-norm minimization problem is usually converted to the nuclear-norm `regularization' problem which simultaneously minimize penalty and error terms with some trade-off parameter. However, the good value of trade-off is not easily determined because of the difference of two units and the data dependence. In the sense of trade-off tuning, the noisy te…

Modern digital cameras rely on the sequential execution of separate image processing steps to produce realistic images. The first two steps are usually related to denoising and demosaicking where the former aims to reduce noise from the sensor and the latter converts a series of light intensity readings to color images. Modern approaches try to jointly solve these problems, i.e. joint denoising-demosaicking which is an inherently ill-posed problem given that two-thirds of the intensity information is missing and the rest are perturbed by noise. While there are several machine learning systems …
This paper presents a tensor multiplication based smoothing algorithm that follows a two step denoising method. Unlike other traditional averaging approaches, our approach uses an element based normal voting tensor to compute smooth surfaces. By introducing a binary optimization on the proposed tensor together with a local binary neighborhood concept, our algorithm better retains sharp features and produces smoother umbilical regions than previous approaches. On top of that, we provide a stochastic analysis on the different kinds of noise based on the average edge length. The quantitative and …
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an important interferometric diagnostic technique which provides cross-sectional views of the subsurface microstructure of biological tissues. However, the imaging quality of high-speed OCT is limited due to the large speckle noise. To address this problem, this paper proposes a multi-frame algorithmic method to denoise OCT volume. Mathematically, we build an optimization model which forces the temporally registered frames to be low rank, and the gradient in each frame to be sparse, under logarithmic image formation and noise variance constraints. Besides,…

Hyperspectral image analysis often requires selecting the most informative bands instead of processing the whole data without losing the key information. Existing band reduction (BR) methods have the capability to reveal the nonlinear properties exhibited in the data but at the expense of loosing its original representation. To cope with the said issue, an unsupervised non-linear segmented and non-segmented stacked denoising autoencoder (UDAE) based BR method is proposed. Our aim is to find an optimal mapping and construct a lower-dimensional space that has a similar structure to the original …

Convex optimization with sparsity-promoting convex regularization is a standard approach for estimating sparse signals in noise. In order to promote sparsity more strongly than convex regularization, it is also standard practice to employ non-convex optimization. In this paper, we take a third approach. We utilize a non-convex regularization term chosen such that the total cost function (consisting of data consistency and regularization terms) is convex. Therefore, sparsity is more strongly promoted than in the standard convex formulation, but without sacrificing the attractive aspects of conv…

We present a technique for jointly denoising bursts of images taken from a handheld camera. In particular, we propose a convolutional neural network architecture for predicting spatially varying kernels that can both align and denoise frames, a synthetic data generation approach based on a realistic noise formation model, and an optimization guided by an annealed loss function to avoid undesirable local minima. Our model matches or outperforms the state-of-the-art across a wide range of noise levels on both real and synthetic data.

In this work, we provide a comprehensive review of the advances in mesh denoising, containing both traditional geometric approaches and recent learning-based methods. First, to familiarize readers with the denoising tasks, we summariz…

Many methods have been proposed in the literature to retrieve noise free images with good performances. Howerever, the state-of-the-art denoising methods, all needs a time-consuming optimization processes and their performance strongly depend on the estimated noise level parameter. Within this manuscript we propose the idea of denoising MRI Rician noise using a convolutional neural network. The advantage of the proposed methodology is that the learning based model can be dire…
Clustering is a fundamental task in unsupervised learning. The focus of this paper is the Correlation Clustering functional which combines positive and negative affinities between the data points. The contribution of this paper is two fold: (i) Provide a theoretic analysis of the functional. (ii) New optimization algorithms which can cope with large scale problems (>100K variables) that are infeasible using existing methods. Our theoretic analysis provides a probabilistic generative interpretation for the functional, and justifies its intrinsic "model-selection" capability. Furthermore, we dra…
Non-local low-rank tensor approximation has been developed as a state-of-the-art method for hyperspectral image (HSI) denoising. Unfortunately, with more spectral bands for HSI, while the running time of these methods significantly increases, their denoising performance benefits little. In this paper, we claim that the HSI underlines a global spectral low-rank subspace, and the spectral subspaces of each full band patch groups should underlie this global low-rank subspace. This motivates us to propose a unified spatial-spectral paradigm for HSI denoising. As the new model is hard to optimize, …

Tensors or multiarray data are generalizations of matrices. Tensor clustering has become a very important research topic due to the intrinsically rich structures in real-world multiarray datasets. Subspace clustering based on vectorizing multiarray data has been extensively researched. However, vectorization of tensorial data does not exploit complete structure information. In this paper, we propose a subspace clustering algorithm without adopting any vectorization process. Our approach is based on a novel heterogeneous Tucker decomposition model. Denoising of clinical CT images is an active area for deep learning research. Current clinically approved methods use iterative reconstruction methods to reduce the noise in CT images. Iterative reconstruction techniques require multiple forward and backward projections, which are time-consuming and computationally expensive. Recently, deep learning methods have been successfully used to denoise CT images. However, conventional deep learning methods suffer from the 'black box' problem. They have low accountability, which is necessary for use in clinical imaging situations. In this paper, we us…
A dataset, collected under an industrial setting, often contains a significant portion of noises. In many cases, using trivial filters is not enough to retrieve useful information i.e., accurate value without the noise. One such data is time-series sensor readings collected from moving vehicles containing fuel information. Due to the noisy dynamics and mobile environment, the sensor readings can be very noisy. Denoising such a dataset is a prerequisite for any useful application and security issues. Security is a primitive concern in present vehicular schemes. The server side for retrieving th…
We present a novel algorithm for blind denoising of images corrupted by mixed impulse, Poisson, and Gaussian noises. The algorithm starts by applying the Anscombe variance-stabilizing transformation to convert the Poisson into white Gaussian noise. Then it applies a combinatorial optimization technique to denoise the mixed impulse Gaussian noise using proximal algorithms. The result is then processed by the inverse Anscombe transform. We compare our algorithm to state of the art methods on standard images, and show its superior performance in various noise conditions.

Deep learning has achieved notable performance in the denoising task of low-quality medical images and the detection task of lesions, respectively. However, existing low-quality medical image denoising approaches are disconnected from the detection task of lesions. Intuitively, the quality of denoised images will influence the lesion detection accuracy that in turn can be used to affect the denoising performance. To this end, we propose a play-and-plug medical image denoising framework, namely Lesion-Inspired Denoising Network (LIDnet), to collaboratively improve both denoising performance and…

K-Means clustering still plays an important role in many computer vision problems. While the conventional Lloyd method, which alternates between centroid update and cluster assignment, is primarily used in practice, it may converge to a solution with empty clusters. Furthermore, some applications may require the clusters to satisfy a specific set of constraints, e.g., cluster sizes, must-link/cannot-link. Several methods have been introduced to solve constrained K-Means clustering. Due to the non-convex nature of K-Means, however, existing approaches may result in sub-optimal solutions that po…
