We have characterized the electrical conductivity of the composite which consists of multi-walled carbon nanotubes dispersed in SU8 epoxy resin. Depending on the processing conditions of the epoxy (ranging from non-polymerized to cross-linked) we obtained tunneling and percolating-like regimes of the electrical conductivity of the composites. We interpret the observed qualitative change of the conductivity behavior in terms of reduced separation between the nanotubes induced by polymerization of the epoxy matrix.
A spectroscopic study of the amino functionalization of double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) is performed. Original experimental investigations by near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy at the C and O K-edges allow one to follow the efficiency of the chemistry during the different steps of covalent functionalization. Combined with Raman spectroscopy, the characterization gives a direct evidence of the grafting of amino-terminated molecules on the structural defects of the DWCNT external wall, whereas the internal wall does not undergo any change. Structural and mechanical inve…
Carbon nanotubes (CTNs) with large aspect-ratios are extensively used to establish electrical connectedness in polymer melts at very low CNT loadings. However, the CNT size polydispersity and the quality of the dispersion are still not fully understood factors that can substantially alter the desired characteristics of CNT nanocomposites. Here we demonstrate that the electrical conductivity of polydisperse CNT-epoxy composites with purposely-tailored distributions of the nanotube length L is a quasiuniversal function of the first moment of L. This finding challenges the current understanding t…
The stabilization of carbon nanotubes via the filling with inner tubes is demonstrated by probing the optical transitions in double-walled carbon nanotube bundles under hydrostatic pressure with optical spectroscopy. Double-walled carbon nanotube films were prepared from fullerene peapods and characterized by HRTEM and optical spectroscopy. In comparison to single-walled carbon nanotubes, the pressure-induced redshifts of the optical transitions in the outer tubes are significantly smaller below $\sim$10 GPa, demonstrating the enhanced mechanical stability due to the inner tube already at low …
The radial-breathing-like phonon modes (RBLMs) of the double-walled carbon nanotubes are studied in a simple analytical model, in which the interaction force constants (FCs) can be obtained analytically from the continuous model. The RBLMs frequencies are obtained by solving the dynamical matrix, and their relationship with the tube radii can be obtained analytically, offering a powerful experimental tool for determining precisely the radii of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes.
Based on the van der Waals interaction, the periodically nonlinear potential of a singe-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) with finite length in an infinite length SWNT is analytically obtained. It is found that the inner SWNT can oscillate in the outer SWNT with frequency beyond ten Gigahertz, even up to a hundred Gigahertz.
Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes are studied in the diffusive transport regime. The peak mobility is found to scale with the square of the nanotube diameter and inversely with temperature. The maximum conductance, corrected for the contacts, is linear in the diameter and inverse temperature. These results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions for acoustic phonon scattering in combination with the unusual band structure of nanotubes. These measurements set the upper bound for the performance of nanotube transistors operating in the diffusive regime.
In this letter, we demonstrate a strong dependence of the electrostatic deformation of doubly-clamped single-walled carbon nanotubes on both the field strength and the tube length, using molecular simulations. Metallic nanotubes are found to be more sensitive to an electric field than semiconducting ones of the same size. For a given electric field, the induced deformation increases with tube length but decreases with tube radius. Furthermore, it is found that nanotubes can be more efficiently bent in a center-oriented transverse electric field.
The reinforcement efficiency of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in epoxy matrix was investigated in the elastic regime. Cyclic uniaxial tensile tests were performed at constant strain amplitude and increasing maximum strain. Post-curing of the epoxy and its composite at a temperature close to the glass transition temperature allowed us to explore the effect of aging on the reinforcement efficiency of CNT. It is found that the reinforcement efficiency is compatible with a mean field mixture rule of stress reinforcement by random inclusions. It also diminishes when the maximum strain increased and this …
We investigated the mechanism for photoconduction in multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) film of various electrode separations upon near infrared illumination. In addition to observing strong dependence of photocurrent on the position of the laser spot, we found that the time constant of the dynamic photoresponse is slow and increases with increasing electrode separations. The photoconduction mechanism can be explained by the Schottky barrier modulation at the metal-nanotube film interface and charge carrier diffusion through percolating MWNT networks.
We report on a numerical study of quantum diffusion over micron lengths in defect-free multi-walled nanotubes. The intershell coupling allows the electron spreading over several shells, and when their periodicities along the nanotube axis are incommensurate, which is likely in real materials, the electronic propagation is shown to be non ballistic. This results in magnetotransport properties which are exceptional for a disorder free system, and provides a new scenario to understand the experiments (A. Bachtold et al. Nature 397, 673 (1999)).
Electron scattering rates in metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes are studied using an atomic force microscope as an electrical probe. From the scaling of the resistance of the same nanotube with length in the low and high bias regimes, the mean free paths for both regimes are inferred. The observed scattering rates are consistent with calculations for acoustic phonon scattering at low biases and zone boundary/optical phonon scattering at high biases.
The effect of oxygen impurities upon the radial thermal expansion (ar) of bundles of closed single-walled carbon nanotubes has been investigated in the temperature interval 2.2-48 K by the dilatometric method. Saturation of bundles of nanotubes with oxygen caused an increase in the positive ar-values in the whole interval of temperatures used. Also, several peaks appeared in the temperature dependence ar(T) above 20 K. The low temperature desorption of oxygen from powders consisting of bundles of single-walled nanotubes with open and closed ends has been investigated
We report a measurement on quantum capacitance of individual semiconducting and small band gap SWNTs. The observed quantum capacitance is remarkably smaller than that originating from density of states and it implies a strong electron correlation in SWNTs.
The rheological and electrical properties of suspensions of carbon nanotubes in an uncured epoxy resin were investigated by means of shear rheology and impedance spectroscopy. It was found that above an onset CNT weight fraction (0.1 wt %), the steady viscosity increased with CNT loading and presented a shear thinning behaviour. The concentration dependence of viscosity changed from a power law to an exponential with increasing shear rate, indicating a loss of interaction between aggregates and CNT network breakage. The fluid-to-solidlike and insulator-to-conductor transitions occurred in the …
Single- and multi-walled molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) nanotubes have been coaxially grown on small diameter boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) which were synthesized from heteronanotubes by removing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and systematically investigated by optical spectroscopy. The strong photoluminescence (PL) from single-walled MoS$_2$ nanotubes supported by core BNNTs is observed in this work, which evidences a direct band gap structure for single-walled MoS$_2$ nanotubes with around 6 - 7 nm in diameter. The observation is consistent with our DFT results that the single-wa…
We studied the nonlinear time-resolved luminescence signals due to multiexciton recombination processes in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) using femtosecond excitation correlation (FEC) spectroscopy. From theoretical analysis of the FEC signals, we found that the FEC signals in the long time range are dominated by the single exciton decay in SWNTs, where the exciton-exciton annihilation process is efficient. Our results provide a simple method to clarify the single exciton decay dynamics in low-dimensional materials.
We describe a technique for fabricating nanometer-scale gaps in Pt wires on insulating substrates, using individual single-walled carbon nanotubes as shadow masks during metal deposition. More than 80% of the devices display current-voltage dependencies characteristic of direct electron tunneling. Fits to the current-voltage data yield gap widths in the 0.8-2.3 nm range for these devices, dimensions that are well suited for single-molecule transport measurements.
Removal of impurities and aggregates from as-grown single walled-carbon nanotube (SWCNT) materials remains an important challenge in nanotube research and applications. We report a simple but effective purification method that uses permanent magnets to remove nanotube aggregates, as well as residual metallic catalyst, from surfactant-coated aqueous SWCNT suspensions. Samples have been characterized by optical absorption, fluorescence and Raman spectroscopies; AFM and near-IR fluorescence microscopies; and TGA. We found that magnetic purification gives samples with reduced absorption background…
The effect of a N2 impurity on the radial thermal expansion coefficient (ar) of single-walled carbon nanotube bundles has been investigated in the temperature interval 2.2 - 43 K by the dilatometric method. Saturation of nanotube bundles with N2 caused a sharp increase in the positive magnitudes of ar in the whole range of temperatures used and a very high and wide maximum in the thermal expansion coefficient (ar)(T) at T about 28 K. The low temperature desorption of the impurity from the N2-saturated powder of bundles of single-walled carbon nanotubes with open and closed ends has been invest…
We report a femtosecond mid-infrared study of the broadband low-energy response of individually separated (6,5) and (7,5) single-walled carbon nanotubes. Strong photoinduced absorption is observed around 200 meV, whose transition energy, oscillator strength, resonant chirality enhancement and dynamics manifest the observation of quasi-1D intra-excitonic transitions. A model of the nanotube 1s-2p cross section agrees well with the signal amplitudes. Our study further reveals saturation of the photoinduced absorption with increasing phase-space filling of the correlated e-h pairs.
We show that new low-energy photoluminescence (PL) bands can be created in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes by intense pulsed excitation. The new bands are attributed to PL from different nominally dark excitons that are "brightened" due to defect-induced mixing of states with different parity and/or spin. Time-resolved PL studies on single nanotubes reveal a significant reduction of the bright exciton lifetime upon brightening of the dark excitons. The lowest energy dark state has longer lifetimes and is not in thermal equilibrium with the bright state.
This work revisits the physics giving rise to the carbon nanotubes phonon bands in the mid- infrared. Our measurements of doped and undoped samples of single-walled carbon nanotubes in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy show that the phonon bands exhibit an asymmetric lineshape and that their effective cross-section is enhanced upon doping. We relate these observations to electron-phonon coupling or, more specifically, to a Fano resonance phenomenon. We note that only the dopant-induced intraband continuum couples to the phonon modes and that defects induced in the sidewall increase the r…
A continuous model of double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) low-frequency dynamics was constructed. In the frame of the approach proposed formation of a DWCNT low-frequency phonon spectrum from the ones of corresponding single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was considered. Environmental influence on the individual DWCNT phonon spectrum was studied. A combined method of van der Waals interlayer coupling coefficients evaluation was proposed, and it is based on Raman spectroscopy data and known values of graphite elastic moduli. Also DWCNT low-temperature specific heat was calculated. In the mo…
We demonstrate a novel cross-sectional deformation, called the radial corrugation, of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) under hydrostatic pressure. Theoretical analyses based on the continuum elastic approximation have revealed that MWNTs consisting of more than ten concentric walls undergo elastic deformations at critical pressure $p_c \simeq 1$ GPa, above which the circular shape of the cross section becomes radially corrugated. Various corrugation modes have been observed by tuning the innermost tube diameter and the number of constituent walls, which is a direct consequence of the core…
Using the first principles calculations we have studied the vibrational modes and Raman spectra of a (10, 10) single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) bundle under hydrostatic pressure. Detailed analysis shows that the original radial breathing mode (RBM) of the SWNT bundle disappears after the structural phase transition (SPT). And significantly a RBM-like mode appears at about 509 cm^{-1}, which could be considered as a fingerprint of the SPT happened in the SWNT bundle, and further used to determine the microscopic structure of the bundle after the SPT.
Self-assembled hierarchical solid surfaces are very interesting for wetting phenomena, as observed in a variety of natural and artificial surfaces. Here, we report single-walled (SWCNT) and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) thin films realized by a simple, rapid, reproducible, and inexpensive filtration process from an aqueous dispersion, that was deposited at room temperature by a dry-transfer printing method on glass. Furthermore, the investigation of carbon nanotube films through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals the multi-scale hierarchical morphology of the self-assembled carb…
We have observed large-amplitude coherent phonon oscillations of radial breathing modes (RBMs) in single-walled carbon nanotubes excited through the lowest-energy (E11) interband transitions. In contrast to the previously-studied coherent phonons excited through higher-energy (E22) transitions, these RBMs show comparable intensities between (n-m) mod 3 = 1 and -1 nanotubes. We also find novel non-resonantly excited RBMs over an excitation range of ~300 meV above the E11 transition, which we attribute to multi-phonon replicas arising from strong exciton-phonon coupling.
We report a study of the rotational dynamics in double-walled nanotubes using molecular dynamics simulations and a simple analytical model reproducing very well the observations. We show that the dynamic friction is linear in the angular velocity for a wide range of values. The molecular dynamics simulations show that for large enough systems the relaxation time takes a constant value depending only on the interlayer spacing and temperature. Moreover, the friction force increases linearly with contact area, and the relaxation time decreases with the temperature with a power law of exponent $-1…
How carbon nanotubes behave in an external electric field? What will be the relation between the intensity of the electric field and the tube's deformation? What are the geometry effects on the response of carbon nanotubes to electric fields? To answer these questions, we have developed a new combined computational technique to study electrostatic field induced deformations of carbon nanotubes. In this work, we find that the deflection angle of cantilevered semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes is proportional to the square of the electric field strength, and the tubes can be most bent…
The Ajiki-Ando (A-A) splitting of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNT) originating from the Aharanov-Bohm effect was observed in chiral specific SWNTs by the magneto-absorption measurements conducted at magnetic fields of up to 78 T. The absorption spectra from each chirality showed clear A-A splitting of the $E_{11}$ optical excitonic transitions. The parameters of both the dark-bright exciton energy splitting and the rate of A-A splitting in a magnetic field were determined for the first time from the well-resolved absorption spectra.
A simple method to disperse individual single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT ) on an atomically flat substrate is presented. Proper tuning of ac modes of atomic force microscopes(AFM) is discussed. This is needed to discriminate between individual nanotubes and very small bundles. The distribution of lengths of the nanotubes measured by these methods is reported.
A simple process for chemical vapor deposition of ultra SD single wall carbon nanotubes has been developed. In this process, an iron nitrate nonahydrate solution in isopropyl alcohol with a concentration of 400 ug/mlit was used to catalyze nanoparticles formation on an oxidized silicon wafer. The oxide on the substrate was made of a thick layer of wet oxide sandwiched between tow thin layers of dry oxide. The process results in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with diameter of less than 0.7nm and more than 1ev band gap energy, which are amongst the smallest diameters of SW…
We use electrostatic force microscopy and scanned gate microscopy to probe the conducting properties of carbon nanotubes at room temperature. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes are shown to be diffusive conductors, while metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes are ballistic conductors over micron lengths. Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes are shown to have a series of large barriers to conduction along their length. These measurements are also used to probe the contact resistance and locate breaks in carbon nanotube circuits.
The ability to integrate carbon nanotubes, especially single-walled carbon nanotubes, seamlessly onto silicon would expand the range of applications considerably. Though direct integration using chemical vapor deposition is the simplest method, the growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes on bare silicon and on ultra-thin oxides is greatly inhibited due to the formation of a non-catalytic silicide. Using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we show that silicide formation occurs on ultra-thin oxides due to thermally activated metal diffusion through the oxide. Silicides affect the growth of singl…
The controlled introduction of covalent sp$^{3}$ defects into semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) gives rise to exciton localization and red-shifted near-infrared luminescence. The single-photon emission characteristics of these functionalized SWCNTs make them interesting candidates for electrically driven quantum light sources. However, the impact of sp$^{3}$ defects on the carrier dynamics and charge transport in carbon nanotubes remains an open question. Here, we use ultrafast, time-resolved optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy as a direct and quantitative technique …
Carbon nanotubes have been observed to emit ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation when exposed to microwave fields. We have performed experiments in which both single-walled (~1 nm diameters) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (>50 nm diameters) were exposed to 2.45 GHz microwaves during several irradiation and cooling cycles at a pressure of ~10-6 torr. A comparison of the spectra of the radiation emitted by the nanotubes indicates that the intensity of radiation with wavelengths ranging from 700 to 1000 nm increased substantially during the course of five irradiation and cooling cycles…
We have computed the adsorption of Krypton in a closed single-walled carbon nanotube using the method of Grand Canonical Monte Carlo. Our results indicate evidence of an incommensurate solid formed at high pressure and low temperature (T<85K), before the formation of a second layer. The solid melts above that temperature. Our simulations are in good agreement with novel experimental results for adsorption in individual carbon nanotubes.
Interaction of single-walled carbon nanotubes with electron donor and acceptor molecules causes significant changes in the electronic and Raman spectra, the relative proportion of the metallic species increasing on electron donation through molecular charge transfer, as also verified by electrical resistivity measurements.
We report on the characterization of torsional oscillators which use multi-walled carbon nanotubes as the spring elements. Through atomic-force-microscope force-distance measurements we are able to apply torsional strains to the nanotubes and measure their torsional spring constants and effective shear moduli. We find that the effective shear moduli cover a broad range, with the largest values near the theoretically predicted value. The data also suggest that the nanotubes are stiffened by repeated flexing.
Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs)-polymer composites are promising candidates for a myriad of applications. Ad-hoc CNTs-polymer composite fabrication techniques inherently pose roadblock to optimized processing resulting in microstructural defects i.e., void formation, poor interfacial adhesion, wettability, and agglomeration of CNTs inside the polymer matrix. Although improvement in the microstructures can be achieved via additional processing steps such as-mechanical methods and/or chemical functionalization, the resulting composites are somewhat limited in structural and functional performances. Here…
In building up composite structures using carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers, the fiber-to-matrix interfacial shear strength (IFSS) is one of the most important issues. Originating from the assembly characteristics of CNT fiber, the IFSS strongly depends on the fiber's twisting level and densification level. Furthermore, there are rich ways to modify the fiber surface and thus enhance the IFSS, including the physical and chemical modification on fiber surface, the infiltration of matrix resin into CNT fiber, and the introduction of silane coupling agent. A new feature differing from carbon fibers is…
The chemisorption of atomic hydrogen on the single-walled armchair carbon nanotube is studied with ab initio calculations. A single H atom is found to be chemisorbed on both the inside and outside wall of the nanotube. The binding energy of H adsorption at the exterior of the nanotube is much greater than that at the interior of the nanotube. For the first time, we predict that two rows of H atoms chemisorbed on selective sites exterior to the nanotube can break the nearest-neighbor C-C bond of the nanotube through the concerted formation of C-H bonds, leading to the unzipping of the nanotube …
We present a quantitative theory of optical absorption polarized transverse to the tube axes in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes. Transverse optical absorption in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes is to an exciton state that is strongly blueshifted, relative to the two lowest longitudinal excitons, by electron-electron interactions. The binding energy of the transverse exciton is considerably smaller than those of the longitudinal excitons. Electron-electron interactions also reduce the relative oscillator strength of the transverse optical absorption. Our theoretical …
Interactions between atoms of bound single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are known to cause measurable distortion to the tube's original circular cross-section frame. High-resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM) investigation was used here to directly image and verify these radial deformations. The data presented here provide, for the first time, direct measurements of the deformations due to the interactions between isolated pairs of nanotubes. The deformation data is compared to previously reported experimental and simulation results.
We present a detailed electron diffraction study of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes. A novel sample preparation procedure provides well-separated, long and straight individual single-shell nanotubes. Diffraction experiments are carried out at 60kV, below the threshold for knock-on damage in carbon nanotubes. We describe experimental parameters that allow single-tube electron diffraction experiments with widely available thermal emission transmission electron microscopes. Further, we review the simulation of diffraction patterns for these objects.
A new molecular motor is conceptually constructed from a double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) consisting of a long inner single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) and a short outer SWNT with different chirality. The interaction between inner and outer tubes is the sum of the Lennard-Jones potentials between carbon atoms in inner tube and those in outer one. Within the framework of Smoluchowski-Feynman ratchet, it is theoretically shown that this system in an isothermal bath will exhibit a unidirectional rotation in the presence of a varying axial electrical voltage.
We report first-principles calculations of the effects of quasiparticle self-energy and electron-hole interaction on the optical properties of single-walled BN nanotubes. Excitonic effects are shown to be even more important in BN nanotubes than in carbon nanotubes. Electron-hole interactions give rise to complexes of bright (and dark) excitons, which qualitatively alter the optical response. Excitons with binding energy larger than 2 eV are found in the (8,0) BN nanotubes. Moreover, unlike the carbon nanotubes, theory predicts that these exciton states are comprised of coherent supposition of…
Using the first-principles spin density functional approach, we have studied magnetism of a new type of all-carbon nanomaterials, i.e., the carbon nanowires inserted into the single-walled carbon nanotubes. It is found that if the 1D carbon nanowire density is not too higher, the ferromagnetic ground state will be more stable than the antiferromagnetic one, which is caused by weak coupling between the 1D carbon nanowire and the single-walled carbon nanotube. Also, both dimerization of the carbon nanowire and carbon vacancy on the tube-wall are found to enhance the magnetic moment of the compos…
A parametric study of so-called "super growth" of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) was done by using combinatorial libraries of iron/aluminum oxide catalysts. Millimeter-thick forests of nanotubes grew within 10 min, and those grown by using catalysts with a thin Fe layer (about 0.5 nm) were SWNTs. Although nanotube forests grew under a wide range of reaction conditions such as gas composition and temperature, the window for SWNT was narrow. Fe catalysts rapidly grew nanotubes only when supported on aluminum oxide. Aluminum oxide, which is a well-known catalyst in hydrocarbon reforming, p…
We report correlated-electron calculations of optically excited states in ten semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes with a wide range of diameters. Optical excitation occurs to excitons whose binding energies decrease with the increasing nanotube diameter, and are smaller than the binding energy of an isolated strand of poly-(paraphenylene vinylene). The ratio of the energy of the second optical exciton polarized along the nanotube axis to that of the lowest exciton is smaller than the value predicted within single-particle theory. The experimentally observed weak photoluminescence is …
Towards the development of a useful mechanism for hydrogen storage, we have studied the hydrogenation of single-walled carbon nanotubes with atomic hydrogen using core-level photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We find that atomic hydrogen creates C-H bonds with the carbon atoms in the nanotube walls and such C-H bonds can be com-pletely broken by heating to 600 oC. We demonstrate approximately 65+/-15 at % hydrogenation of carbon atoms in the single-walled carbon nanotubes which is equivalent to 5.1+/-1.2 weight % hydrogen capacity. We also show that the hydrogenation…
Single-walled carbon nanotubes are strongly correlated systems with large Coulomb repulsion between two electrons occupying the same $p_z$ orbital. Within a molecular Hamiltonian appropriate for correlated $π$-electron systems, we show that optical excitations polarized parallel to the nanotube axes in the so-called metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes are to excitons. Our calculated absolute exciton energies in twelve different metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes, with diameters in the range 0.8 - 1.4 nm, are in nearly quantitative agreement with experimental results. We have also calc…
Optical limiting behaviour of suspensions of single-walled carbon nanotubes in water, ethanol and ethylene glycol is reported. Experiments with 532 nm, 15 nsec duration laser pulses show that optical limiting occurs mainly due to nonlinear scattering. The observed host liquid dependence of optical limiting in different suspensions suggests that the scattering originates from microbubbles formed due to absorption-induced heating.
It is important to understand the electronic interaction between single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and graphene in order to use them efficiently in multifunctional hybrid devices. Here we deposited SWNT bundles on graphene-covered copper and SiO2 substrates by chemical vapor deposition and investigated the charge transfer between them by Raman spectroscopy. Our results revealed that, on both copper and SiO2 substrates, graphene donates electrons to the SWNTs, resulting in p-type doped graphene and n-type doped SWNTs.
Our study of the adsorption of oxygen molecules on individual semiconductiong single-walled carbon nanotubes at ambient conditions reveals that the adsorption is physisorption, that the resistance without O2 increases by ~two orders of magnitude as compared to that with O2, and that the sensitive response is due to the pinning of the Fermi level near the top of the valence band of the tube resulting from impurity states of O2 appearing above the valence band.
We develop a continuous theory of low-frequency dynamics for nanotubes with truly two-dimensional (2D) walls constituted by single-atom monolayer. In this frame topological bending elasticity of the monolayer is not related to its vanishing macroscopic thickness. The proposed approach predicts completely new sound dispersions and radius dependences of non-resonant Raman-active modes frequencies in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). Resulting relations are suitable for nanotubes identification and more complete or alternative characterization. The theory is also applied to describe the low…
We investigate experimentally the transport properties of single-walled carbon nanotube bundles as a function of temperature and applied current over broad intervals of these variables. The analysis is performed on arrays of nanotube bundles whose axes are aligned along the direction of the externally supplied bias current. The data are found consistent with a charge transport model governed by the tunnelling between metallic regions occurring through potential barriers generated by nanotubes contact areas or bundles surfaces. Based on this model and on experimental data we describe quantitati…
Diffusion Monte Carlo calculations on the adsorption of $^4$He in open-ended single walled (10,10) nanotubes are presented. We have found a first order phase transition separating a low density liquid phase in which all $^4$He atoms are adsorbed close to the tube wall and a high density arrangement characterized by two helium concentric layers. The energy correction due to the presence of neighboring tubes in a bundle has also been calculated, finding it negligible in the density range considered.
We show by ab initio calculations that the electron-phonon coupling matrix element M of the radial breathing mode in single-walled carbon nanotubes depends strongly on tube chirality. For nanotubes of the same diameter the coupling strength |M|^2 is up to one order of magnitude stronger for zig-zag than for armchair tubes. For (n,m) tubes M depends on the value of (n-m) mod 3, which allows to discriminate semiconducting nano tubes with similar diameter by their Raman scattering intensity. We show measured resonance Raman profiles of the radial breathing mode which support our theoretical predi…
