Polariton lasing has recently been observed in strongly coupled crystalline anthracene microcavities. A simple model is developed describing the onset of the non-linear threshold based on a master equation including the relevant relaxation processes and employing realistic material parameters. The mechanism governing the build-up of the polariton population - namely bosonic stimulated scattering from the exciton reservoir via a vibronically assisted process - is characterized and its efficiency calculated on the basis of a microscopic theory. The role of polariton-polariton bimolecular quenching is identified and temperature dependent effects are discussed.
We evidence magnetic field triggered polariton lasing in a microcavity containing semimagnetic quantum wells. This effect is associated with a decrease of the polariton lasing threshold power in magnetic field. The observed magnetic field dependence of the threshold power systematically exhibits a minimum which only weakly depends on the zero-field photon-exciton detuning. These results are interpreted as a consequence of the polariton giant Zeeman splitting which in magnetic field: leads to a decrease of the number of accessible states in the lowest polariton branch by a factor of two, and su…
We have designed and fabricated all-epitaxial ZnSe-based optical micropillars exhibiting the strong coupling regime between the excitonic transition and the confined optical cavity modes. At cryogenic temperatures, under non-resonant pulsed optical excitation, we demonstrate single transverse mode polariton lasing operation in the micropillars. Owing to the high quality factors of these microstructures, the lasing threshold remains low even in micropillars of the smallest diameter. We show that this feature can be traced back to a sidewall roughness grain size below 3 nm, and to suppressed in-…
Optically generated exciton-polaritons in cylindric semiconductor pillar microcavity with embedded GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells demonstrate a clear polariton lasing regime. When exciting in the center of the pillar we detect a ring-shaped emission, where the peak of intensity can be separated from the excitation spot by more than 10 micrometers. The spatial coherence of the ring emission is verified by interferometry measurements. These observations are interpreted by drift of the exciton polariton condensate away from the excitation spot due to its repulsion from the exciton reservoir and by its…
We present a beyond-mean-field approach to predict the nature of organic polariton lasing, accounting for all relevant photon modes in a planar microcavity. Starting from a microscopic picture, we show how lasing can switch between polaritonic states resonant with the maximal gain, and those at the bottom of the polariton dispersion. We show how the population of non-lasing modes can be found, and by using two-time correlations, we show how the photoluminescence spectrum (of both lasing and non-lasing modes) evolves with pumping and coupling strength, confirming recent experimental work on the…
We present an approximate analytic expression for the photoluminescence spectral function of a model polariton system, which describes a quantum dot, with a finite number of fermionic levels, strongly interacting with the lowest photon mode of a pillar microcavity. Energy eigenvalues and wavefunctions of the electron-hole-photon system are obtained by numerically diagonalizing the Hamiltonian. Pumping and photon losses through the cavity mirrors are described with a master equation, which is solved in order to determine the stationary density matrix. The photon first-order correlation function…
We demonstrate edge-emitting exciton-polariton (polariton) lasing from 5 to 300 K and amplification of non-radiative guided polariton modes within ZnO waveguides. The mode dispersion below and above the lasing threshold is directly measured using gratings present on top of the sample, fully demonstrating the polaritonic nature of the lasing modes. The threshold is found to be similar to that of radiative polarions in planar ZnO microcavities. These results open broad perspectives for guided polaritonics by allowing an easier and more straightforward implementation of polariton integrated circu…
We report on properties of an optical microcavity based on (Cd,Zn,Mg)Te layers and embedding (Cd,Zn)Te quantum wells. The key point of the structure design is the lattice matching of the whole structure to MgTe, which eliminates the internal strain and allows one to embed an arbitrary number of unstrained quantum wells in the microcavity. We evidence the strong light-matter coupling regime already for the structure containing a single quantum well. Embedding four unstrained quantum wells results in further enhancement of the exciton-photon coupling and the polariton lasing in the strong coupli…
Planar microcavities filled with active materials containing excitonic resonances host radiative exciton-polariton (polariton) modes with in-plane wave vectors within the light cone. They also host at least one mode guided in the cavity plane by total internal reflection and which is not radiatively coupled to the vacuum modes except through defects or sample edges. We show that polariton lasing mediated by polariton stimulated scattering can occur concomitantly in both types of modes in a microcavity. By adjusting the detuning between the exciton and the radiative photon mode one can favor po…
We predict the spontaneous modulated emission from a pair of exciton-polariton condensates due to coherent (Josephson) and dissipative coupling. We show that strong polariton-polariton inter- action generates complex dynamics in the weak-lasing domain way beyond Hopf bifurcations. As a result, the exciton-polariton condensates exhibit self-induced oscillations and emit an equidistant frequency comb light spectrum. A plethora of possible emission spectra with asymmetric peak dis- tributions appears due to spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry. The lasing dynamics is affected by the shot n…
Polariton lasing is the coherent emission arising from a macroscopic polariton condensate first proposed in 1996. Over the past two decades, polariton lasing has been demonstrated in a few inorganic and organic semiconductors in both low and room temperatures. Polariton lasing in inorganic materials significantly relies on sophisticated epitaxial growth of crystalline gain medium layers sandwiched by two distributed Bragg reflectors in which combating the built-in strain and mismatched thermal properties is nontrivial. On the other hand, organic active media usually suffer from large threshold…
Microcavity polaritons are bosonic light-matter particles that can emit coherent radiation without electronic population inversion via bosonic scattering. This phenomenon, known as polariton lasing, strongly depends on the polaritons' confinement. Shrinking the polaritons' mode volume increases the interactions mediated by their excitonic part, and thereby the density-dependent blueshift of the polariton to a higher energy is enhanced. Previously, polariton lasing has been demonstrated in micropillars with diameters larger than three microns, in grating based cavities, fiber cavities and photo…
Microcavity exciton polariton systems can have a wide range of macroscopic quantum effects that may be turned into better photonic technologies. Polariton Bose-Einstein condensation and photon lasing have been widely accepted in the limits of low and high carrier densities, but identification of the expected Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state at intermediate densities remains elusive, as the optical-gain mechanism cannot be directly inferred from existing experiments. Here, using a microcavity with strong polarization selectivity, we gain direct experimental access to the reservoir absorpti…
Condensation of microcavity polaritons and the substantial influence of pair-breaking disorder and decoherence leading to a laser regime has been recently considered using two different models: a model for direct two band excitons in a disordered quantum well coupled to light and a model where the cavity mode couples instead to a medium of localised excitons, represented by two-level oscillators in the presence of dephasing processes. Even if complementary from the point of view of assumptions, the models share most of the main conclusions and show similar phase diagrams. The issue whether exc…
In spite of having finite life-time exciton-polaritons in microcavities are known to condense at strong enough pumping of the reservoir. We present an analytical theory of such Bose-condensates on a set of localized one-particle states: condensation centers. To understand physics of these arrays one has to supplement the Josephson coupling by the radiative coupling caused by the interference of the light emitted by different centers. Combination of these couplings with the one-site interaction between the bosons leads to a rich nonlinear dynamics. In particular, a new regime of radiation appea…
Electric dipole transitions between different cavity polariton branches or between dressed atomic states with the same excitation number are strictly forbidden in centro-symmetric systems. For doped quantum wells in semiconductor microcavities, the strong coupling between an intersubband transition in the conduction band and a cavity mode produces two branches of intersubband cavity polaritons, whose normal-mode energy splitting is tunable and can be in the terahertz region. Here, we show that, by using asymmetric quantum wells, it is possible to have allowed dipolar transitions between differ…
Controlling light-matter interactions in solid-state systems has motivated intense research to produce bosonic quasi-particles known as exciton-polaritons, which requires strong coupling between excitons and cavity photons. Ultra-low threshold coherent light emitters can be achieved through lasing from exciton-polariton condensates, but this generally requires sophisticated device structures and cryogenic temperatures. Polaritonic nanolasers operating at room temperature lie on the crucial path of related research, not only for the exploration of polariton physics at the nanoscale but also for…
We study the laser regime of terahertz (THz) emission from a semiconductor microcavity in the strong coupling regime, where optical transitions between upper and lower exciton-polariton modes are allowed due to the mixing of the upper mode with one of the dark exciton states. Using a system of master-Boltzmann equations describing both polariton modes and the THz mode, we calculate the first and second order coherences and the spectral shape of THz emission. This analysis shows that THz lasing in microcavities is possible provided that the system is embedded in a good THz cavity, that the opti…
We compare polariton lasing with photon lasing of a planar GaAs/GaAlAs microcavity with zero detuning between the bare cavity mode and the bare exciton mode. For the emission from the lower energy-momentum dispersion branch we find a two-threshold behavior of the ground state in the input-output curve where each transition is accompanied by characteristic changes of the in-plane mode dispersion. In particular, we show that the thresholds are unambiguously evidenced in the photon statistics of the emission based on the second-order correlation function. Moreover, the distinct two-threshold beha…
Metallic nanostructures provide a toolkit for the generation of coherent light below the diffraction limit. Plasmonic based lasing relies on the population inversion of emitters (such as organic fluorophores) along with feedback provided by plasmonic resonances. In this regime, known as weak light matter coupling, the radiative characteristics of the system can be described by the Purcell effect. Strong light matter coupling between the molecular excitons and electromagnetic field generated by the plasmonic structures leads to the formation of hybrid quasi-particles known as plasmon exciton po…
Topological concepts have been applied to a wide range of fields in order to successfully describe the emergence of robust edge modes that are unaffected by scattering or disorder. In photonics, indications of lasing from topologically protected modes with improved overall laser characteristics were observed. Here, we study exciton-polariton microcavity traps that are arranged in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice and form a topological defect mode from which we unequivocally observe highly coherent polariton lasing. Additionally, we confirm the excitonic contribution to the polari…
Macroscopic spontaneous coherence of exciton-polariton in semiconductor cavity is one important research field in condensed matter physics. All-inorganic micro/nanowire Fabry-Pérot cavity with excellent optical performance makes it possible to realize strong coupling and lasing of exciton-photon at room temperature. In this work, we demonstrated strong coupling of exciton-photon and polariton lasing in CsPbBr3 micro/nanowires synthesized by CVD method. By exploring spatial resolved PL spectra of CsPbBr3 cavity, we observed mode volume dependent coupling strength , as well as significant increa…
The magnetic field effect on phase transitions in electrically neutral bosonic systems is much less studied than those in fermionic systems, such as superconducting or ferromagnetic phase transitions. Nevertheless, composite bosons are strongly sensitive to magnetic fields: both their internal structure and motion as whole particles may be affected. A joint effort of ten laboratories has been focused on studies of polariton lasers, where non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates of bosonic quasiparticles, exciton-polaritons, may appear or disappear under an effect of applied magnetic fields. P…
We study the dynamics of multimode polariton lasing in organic microcavities by using a second-order cumulant equation approach. By inspecting the time evolution of the photon mode occupations, we show that if multiple lasing peaks are observed in time-integrated mode occupations, the reason can be either bi-modal lasing or temporal switching between several modes. The former takes place within a narrow range of parameters while the latter occurs more widely. We find that the origin of the temporal switching is different in the weak- and strong-coupling regimes. At weak coupling slope efficien…
We show that, by monitoring the free carrier reservoir in a GaAs-based quantum well microcavity under nonresonant pulsed optical pumping, lasing supported by a fermionic reservoir (photon lasing) can be distinguished from lasing supported by a reservoir of bosons (polariton lasing). Carrier densities are probed by measuring the photocurrent between lateral contacts deposited directly on the quantum wells of a microcavity that are partially exposed by wet chemical etching. We identify two clear thresholds in the input-output characteristic of the photoluminescence signal which can be attributed…
We predict the existence of non-Hermitian topologically protected end states in a one-dimensional exciton-polariton condensate lattice, where topological transitions are driven by the laser pump pattern. We show that the number of end states can be described by a Chern number and a topological invariant based on the Wilson loop. We find that such transitions arise due to {\it enforced exceptional points} which can be predicted directly from the bulk Bloch wave functions. This allows us to establish a new type of bulk-boundary correspondence for non-Hermitian systems and to compute the phase di…
Observations of polariton condensation in semiconductor microcavities suggest that polaritons can be exploited as a novel type of laser with low input-power requirements. The low-excitation regime is approximately equivalent to thermal equilibrium, and a higher excitation results in more dominant nonequilibrium features. Although standard photon lasing has been experimentally observed in the high excitation regime, e-h pair binding can still remain even in the high-excitation regime theoretically. Therefore, the photoluminescence with a different photon lasing mechanism is predicted to be diff…
We report on the simultaneous observation of spontaneous symmetry breaking and long-range spatial coherence both in the strong and the weak-coupling regime in a semiconductor microcavity. Under pulsed excitation, the formation of a stochastic order parameter is observed in polariton and photon lasing regimes. Single-shot measurements of the Stokes vector of the emission exhibit the buildup of stochastic polarization. Below threshold, the polarization noise does not exceed 10%, while above threshold we observe a total polarization of up to 50% after each excitation pulse, while the polarization…
We demonstrate condensation of microcavity polaritons with a very sharp threshold occuring at two orders of magnitude lower pump intensity than previous demonstrations of condensation. The long cavity-lifetime and trapping and pumping geometries are crucial to the realization of this low threshold. Polariton condensation, or "polariton lasing" has long been proposed as a promising source of coherent light at lower threshold than traditional lasing, and these results suggest methods to bring this threshold even lower.
We examine the photoluminescence of highly-excited exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities. Under strong pumping, exciton-polariton condensates have been observed to undergo a lasing transition where strong coupling between the excitons and photons is lost. We discuss an alternative high-density scenario, where the strong coupling is maintained. We find that the photoluminescence smoothly transitions between the lower polariton energy to the cavity photon energy. An intuitive understanding of the change in spectral characteristics is given, as well as differences to the ph…
We report polariton lasing in localised gap states in a honeycomb lattice of coupled micropillars. Localisation of the modes is induced by the optical potential created by the excitation beam, requiring no additional engineering of the otherwise homogeneous polariton lattice. The spatial shape of the gap states arises from the interplay of the orbital angular momentum eigenmodes of the cylindrical potential created by the excitation beam and the hexagonal symmetry of the underlying lattice. Our results provide insights into the engineering of defect states in two-dimensional lattices.
Topology describes properties that remain unaffected by smooth distortions. Its main hallmark is the emergence of edge states localized at the boundary between regions characterized by distinct topological invariants. This feature offers new opportunities for robust trapping of light in nano- and micro-meter scale systems subject to fabrication imperfections and to environmentally induced deformations. Here we show lasing in such topological edge states of a one-dimensional lattice of polariton micropillars that implements an orbital version of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian. We further …
Third order anharmonic scattering in light-matter systems can drive a wide variety of practical and physically interesting processes from lasing to polariton condensation. Motivated by recent experimental results in the nonlinear optics of localised phonon polaritons, in this Letter we develop a quantum theory capable of describing four-wave mixing in arbitrarily inhomogeneous photonic environments. Using it we investigate Kerr self-interaction and parametric scattering of surface and localised phonon polaritons, showing both processes to be within experimental reach.

The ultrafast scattering dynamics of intersubband polaritons in dispersive cavities embedding GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells are studied directly within their band structure using a non-collinear pump-probe geometry with phase-stable mid-infrared pulses. Selective excitation of the lower polariton at a frequency of ~25 THz and at a finite in-plane momentum, $k_{||}$, leads to the emergence of a narrowband maximum in the probe reflectivity at $k_{||}=0$. A quantum mechanical model identifies the underlying microscopic process as stimulated coherent polariton-polariton scattering. These results mark …
In the field of spin-controlled semiconductor lasers, massive effort has been focused upon materials with long spin relaxation times (~ns). In contrast, we demonstrate room-temperature spin-polarized ultrafast pulsed lasing in InGaAs quantum wells (~10 ps) embedded within a GaAs microcavity. The microcavity studied here is similar to vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) used in optical communication. Unlike a VCSEL, the present polariton laser has nonlinear output and energy shifts owing to the mixing of the free-carrier polarization and cavity light field. At room temperature, we o…
Integration of optical elements into scalable chips has been at the center of a large effort in recent years. Concurrently, the separation between the diverse functions, namely switches, detectors or emitters increases significantly the final number of components on chip. Such technical limitations may be overcome by introducing agile devices able, for example, to simultaneously detect, process and emit a coherent signal. Such a pathway has been explored with different approaches that bear advantages and drawbacks. Polaritons have often been proposed as promising candidates for multifunctional…
