The young open cluster NGC 6611 includes among its candidate members a class of peculiar objects with interesting properties: blue stars with infrared IR excesses. These stars show excesses in IR bands, signature of the presence of a circumstellar disk, but optical colors typical of older field stars. In order to confirm their membership to the cluster, it is therefore important to use new spectroscopic observations, together with previous photometric data. We aim at confirming the membership of these objects and at investigating their physical properties to verify whether the observed colors are intrinsic or altered by the presence of the disk or by the accretion processes. We analyze the intermediate resolution spectroscopic data obtained for a subsample of blue stars in NGC 6611 with FLAMES. In particular, we focus on the study of: 1) the profile of the Ha emission line, to select stars with accretion and outflow activity; 2) the Li absorption line, used as a youth indicator; 3) the radial velocity. Using the spectroscopic analysis, it has been possible to investigate the presence of the Li absorption line as well as to discriminate between stars with inert or active disk. In particular, from the analysis of the Ha emission line we were able to infer the activity due to the accretion and outflow processes and the variability of the emission. We also investigated the binarity of the blue stars and their membership to NGC 6611.
We present a simple method for identifying candidate white dwarf systems with dusty exoplanetary debris based on a single temperature blackbody model fit to the infrared excess. We apply this technique to a sample of Southern Hemisphere white dwarfs from the recently completed Edinburgh-Cape Blue Object Survey and identify four new promising dusty debris disk candidates. We demonstrate the efficacy of our selection method by recovering three of the four $\textit{Spitzer}$ confirmed dusty debris disk systems in our sample. Further investigation using archival high resolution imaging shows $\tex…
We present a Spitzer IRAC and MIPS survey of NGC 2451 A and B, two open clusters in the 50-80 Myr age range. We complement these data with extensive ground-based photometry and spectroscopy to identify the cluster members in the Spitzer survey field. We find only two members with 8 micron excesses. The incidence of excesses at 24 microns is much higher, 11 of 31 solar-like stars and 1 of 7 early-type (A) stars. This work nearly completes the debris disk surveys with Spitzer of clusters in the 30-130 Myr range. This range is of inte rest because it is when large planetesimal collisions may have…
The old (7 Gyr) open cluster NGC 188 has yielded a wealth of astrophysical insight into its rich blue straggler population. Specifically, the NGC 188 blue stragglers are characterized by: A binary frequency of 80% for orbital periods less than $10^4$ days;Typical orbital periods around 1000 days;Typical secondary star masses of 0.5 M$_{\odot}$; At least some white dwarf companion stars; Modestly rapid rotation; A bimodal radial spatial distribution; Dynamical masses greater than standard stellar evolution masses (based on short-period binaries); Under-luminosity for dynamical masses (short-per…
Several possible formation pathways for blue straggler stars have been developed recently, but no one pathway has yet been observationally confirmed for a specific blue straggler. Here we report the first findings from a Hubble Space Telescope ACS/SBC far-UV photometric program to search for white dwarf companions to blue straggler stars. We find three hot and young white dwarf companions to blue straggler stars in the 7-Gyr open cluster NGC 188, indicating that mass transfer in these systems ended less than 300 Myr ago. These companions are direct and secure observational evidence that these …
In open star clusters, where all members formed at about the same time, blue straggler stars are typically observed to be brighter and bluer than hydrogen-burning main-sequence stars, and therefore should already have evolved into giant stars and stellar remnants. Correlations between blue straggler frequency and cluster binary fraction, core mass, and radial position suggest that mass transfer or mergers in binary stars dominates the production of blue stragglers in open clusters. Analytic models, detailed observations, and sophisticated N-body simulations, however, argue in favor of stellar …
(abridged) We present an in-depth study of the hard-binary population of the old (7 Gyr) open cluster NGC 188. The main-sequence solar-type hard binaries in NGC 188 are nearly indistinguishable from similar binaries in the Galactic field. We find a global solar-type main-sequence hard-binary frequency in NGC 188 of 29 +/- 3 % for binaries with periods less than 10^4 days. For main-sequence hard binaries in the cluster we observe a log-period distribution that rises towards our detection limit, a roughly Gaussian eccentricity distribution centered on e = 0.35 (for binaries with periods longer t…
Context. Origin and evolution of blue stragglers in globular clusters is still a matter of debate. Aims. The aim of the present investigation is to reproduce the evolutionary history of four binary blue stragglers in four different clusters, for which precise values of global parameters are known. Methods. Using the model for cool close binary evolution, developed by one of us (KS), progenitors of all investigated binaries were found and their parameters evolved into the presently observed values. Results. The results show that the progenitors of the binary blue stragglers are cool close binar…
Here we discuss the case of the double Blue Straggler Star (BSS) sequence recently detected in the young stellar cluster NGC 2173 in the Large Magellanic Cloud by Li et al (2018). In order to investigate this feature we made use of two HST sets of observations, one (the same one used by Li et al.) probing the cluster central regions, and the other sampling the surrounding field. We demonstrate that when field star decontamination is applied, ~40% of BSS population selected by Li et al. turns out to be composed by field stars interlopers. This contamination mainly affects one of the two sequenc…
We present a detailed investigation of the radial distribution of blue straggler star and binary populations in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 5466, over the entire extension of the system. We used a combination of data acquired with the ACS on board the Hubble Space Telescope, the LBC-blue mounted on the Large Binocular Telescope, and MEGACAM on the Canadian-France-Hawaii Telescope. Blue straggler stars show a bimodal distribution with a mild central peak and a quite internal minimum. This feature is interpreted in terms of a relatively young dynamical age in the framework of the "dynamica…
It has become clear in recent years that globular clusters are not simple stellar populations, but may host chemically distinct sub-populations, typically with an enhanced helium abundance. These helium-rich populations can make up a substantial fraction of all cluster stars. One of the proposed formation channels for blue straggler stars is the physical collision and merger of two stars. In the context of multiple populations, collisions between stars with different helium abundances should occur and contribute to the observed blue straggler population. This will affect the predicted blue str…
Bifurcated patterns of blue straggler stars in their color--magnitude diagrams have atracted significant attention. This type of special (but rare) pattern of two distinct blue straggler sequences is commonly interpreted as evidence of cluster core-collapse-driven stellar collisions as an efficient formation mechanism. Here, we report the detection of a bifurcated blue straggler distribution in a young Large MagellanicCloud cluster, NGC 2173. Because of the cluster's low central stellar number density and its young age, dynamical analysis shows that stellar collisions alone cannot explain the …
We present the barium surface abundance of 12 blue stragglers (BSs) and 18 main-sequence (MS) stars in the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 6819 (2.5 Gyr) based on spectra obtained from the Hydra Multi-object Spectrograph on the WIYN 3.5 m telescope. For the MS stars we find [Fe/H] = $+$0.05 $\pm$ 0.04 and [Ba/Fe] = $-$0.01 $\pm$ 0.10. The majority of the BS stars are consistent with these values. We identify five BSs with significant barium enhancement. These stars most likely formed through mass transfer from an asymptotic giant branch star that polluted the surface of the BS with the nucle…
We used high-spatial resolution images acquired with the WFC3 on board HST to probe the population of variable blue straggler stars in the central region of the poorly studied Galactic globular cluster NGC 6541. The time sampling of the acquired multi wavelength (F390W, F555W and F814W) data allowed us to discover three WUma stars and nine SX Phoenicis. Periods, mean magnitudes and pulsation modes have been derived for the nine SX Phoenicis and their masses have been estimated by using pulsation equations obtained from linear non adiabatic models. We found masses in the range 1.0-1.1Mo, with a…
(Abridged) Following on from a recently completed radial-velocity survey of the old (7 Gyr) open cluster NGC 188 in which we study in detail the solar-type hard binaries and blue stragglers of the cluster, here we investigate the dynamical evolution of NGC 188 through a sophisticated N-body model. We employ the observed binary properties of the young (150 Myr) open cluster M35, where possible, to guide our choices for parameters of the initial binary population. At 7 Gyr the main-sequence solar-type hard-binary population in the model matches that of NGC 188 in both binary frequency and distri…
Based on more than four weeks of continuous high cadence photometric monitoring of several hundred members of the young cluster NGC 2264 with two space telescopes, NASA's Spitzer and the CNES CoRoT (Convection, Rotation, and planetary Transits), we provide high quality, multi-wavelength light curves for young stellar objects (YSOs) whose optical variability is dominated by short duration flux bursts, which we infer are due to enhanced mass accretion rates. These light curves show many brief -- several hour to one day -- brightenings at optical and near-infrared (IR) wavelengths with amplitudes…
The open cluster NGC 6791 has been the focus of much recent study due to its intriguing combination of old age and high metallicity ($\sim$8 Gyr, [Fe$/$H]=$+$0.30), as well as its location within the Kepler field. As part of the WIYN Open Cluster Study, we present precise ($σ=0.38$ km s$^{-1}$) radial velocities for proper-motion candidate members of NGC 6791 from Platais et al. Our survey, extending down to $g^\prime\sim16.8$, is comprised of the evolved cluster population, including blue stragglers, giants, and horizontal branch stars. Of the 280 proper-motion-selected stars above our magnit…
The open star clusters (OSC) are important tracers for understanding the Galactic evolution. The parametric study of these astronomical-objects is crucial task due to the appearing sequence of the members of OSC. These members are defined through the various approaches such as photometric, statistical, kinematics etc. In the present paper, we have been using the photometric colours of the identified stars for categorized them into the blue and red component groups and identification of these groups is possible through (B-V) vs V colour magnitude diagram (CMD). Furthermore, the influence/effect…
We present results of a Hubble Space Telescope far-ultraviolet (FUV) survey searching for white dwarf (WD) companions to blue straggler stars (BSSs) in open cluster NGC 188. The majority of NGC 188 BSSs (15 of 21) are single-lined binaries with properties suggestive of mass-transfer formation via Roche lobe overflow, specifically through an asymptotic giant branch star transferring mass to a main sequence secondary, yielding a BSS binary with a WD companion. In NGC 188, a BSS formed by this mechanism within the past 400 Myr will have a WD companion hot and luminous enough to be directly detect…
We present a study of Far Ultraviolet (FUV) bright horizontal branch (HB) stars to understand the peculiarities seen in the HB sequence of the Globular Cluster NGC 1851, using ground and space based multi-wavelength data. Optical and UV color magnitude diagrams are used to classify HB stars and their membership from HST and Gaia DR2 data. The Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the hot HB stars located from the core to tidal radii are constructed. The SEDs reveal that the HB stars near the G-jump show a decrease in the FUV flux when atmospheric models of cluster metallicity are used for fi…
Using the high-resolution observations obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope, we analyzed the blue straggler stars (BSSs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 2213. We found that the radial distribution of BSSs is consistent with that of the normal giant stars in NGC 2213, showing no evidence of mass segregation. However, an analytic calculation carried out for these BSSs shows that they are already dynamically old, because the estimated half-mass relaxation time for these BSSs is significantly shorter than the isochronal age of the cluster. We also performed direct N-body simulations fo…
Recent discoveries of bimodal main sequences (MSs) associated with young clusters (with ages $\lesssim 1$ Gyr) in the Magellanic Clouds have drawn a lot of attention. One of the prevailing formation scenarios attributes these split MSs to a bimodal distribution in stellar rotation rates, with most stars belonging to a rapidly rotating population. In this scenario, only a small fraction of stars populating a secondary blue sequence are slowly or non-rotating stars. Here, we focus on the blue MS in the young cluster NGC 1850. We compare the cumulative number fraction of the observed blue-MS star…
Recent investigations revealed very peculiar properties of blue horizontal branch (HB) stars in ωCentauri, which show anomalously low surface gravity and mass compared to other clusters and to theoretical models. ωCentauri, however, is a very unusual object, hosting a complex mix of multiple stellar populations with different metallicity and chemical abundances. We measured the fundamental parameters (temperature, gravity, and surface helium abundance) of a sample of 71 blue HB stars in M22, with the aim of clarifying if the peculiar results found in ωCen are unique to this cluster. M22 also h…
Large abundance anomalies have been previously detected in Horizontal Branch B-type stars. We present the first high resolution study of isotopic anomalies and chemical abundances in six Horizontal Branch B-type stars in globular clusters NGC6397 and NGC6752 and compare them to those observed in HgMn stars. We obtained high-resolution (up to R~115000) UVES spectra of a representative sample of six B-type stars (T183, T191, T193, B652, B2151, B2206). It is the first time an abundance analysis is performed for all elements for which spectral lines were detected in UVES spectra of Horizontal Bran…
We present the results obtained from Near-UV observations of the cluster NGC 5466 taken with UVIT onboard AstroSat to study the radial distribution of Blue Straggler Stars (BSSs), covering the cluster region up to a radius of 14$'$. Our study confirms that the BSSs are more centrally concentrated than Horizontal Branch (HB) stars in the cluster. We do not find a statistically significant rising trend in the radial distribution of BSSs for the outer regions, as most of the previously catalogued BSSs that are located in the cluster outskirts were found to be non-members, quasars or galaxies. Thi…
Images recorded with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on Gemini South are combined with archival images from other facilities to search for variable stars in the southern portion of the nearby disk galaxy NGC 247. Fifteen new periodic and non-periodic variables are identified. These include three Cepheids with periods < 25 days, four semi-regular variables, one of which shows light variations similar to those of R CrB stars, five variables with intrinsic visible/red brightnesses and colors that are similar to those of luminous blue variables (LBVs), and three fainter blue variables,…
We present new HST ultraviolet color-magnitude diagrams of 5 massive Galactic globular clusters: NGC 2419, NGC 6273, NGC 6715, NGC 6388, and NGC 6441. These observations were obtained to investigate the "blue hook" phenomenon previously observed in UV images of the globular clusters omega Cen and NGC 2808. Blue hook stars are a class of hot (approximately 35,000 K) subluminous horizontal branch stars that occupy a region of the HR diagram that is unexplained by canonical stellar evolution theory. By coupling new stellar evolution models to appropriate non-LTE synthetic spectra, we investigate …
We present new photometric and spectroscopic observations of an unusual luminous blue variable (LBV) in NGC 3432, covering three major outbursts in October 2008, April 2009 and November 2009. Previously, this star experienced an outburst also in 2000 (known as SN 2000ch). During outbursts the star reached an absolute magnitude between -12.1 and -12.8. Its spectrum showed H, He I and Fe II lines with P-Cygni profiles during and soon after the eruptive phases, while only intermediate-width lines in pure emission (including He II 4686A were visible during quiescence. The fast-evolving light curve…
We present a multi-passband photometric study of the Blue Straggler Star (BSS) population in the Galactic globular cluster (GC) NGC\,1261, using available space- and ground-based survey data.~The inner BSS population is found to have two distinct sequences in the color-magnitude diagram, similar to double BSS sequences detected in other GCs. These well defined sequences are presumably linked to single short-lived events such as core collapse, which are expected to boost the formation of BSSs.~In agreement with this, we find a BSS sequence in NGC\,1261 which can be well reproduced individually …
We report the analysis of a binary blue straggler in NGC 6752 with a short orbital period of 0.315 d and a W UMA-type light curve. We use photometric data spanning 13 years to place limits on the mass ratio (0.15<q<0.35), luminosity ratio (L1/L2 about 4.0) and the ratio of the radii of the components (r1/r2 about 2.0). The effective temperatures of the components are nearly identical, and the system is detached or semi-detached (in the latter case the component filling its Roche lobe is the secondary). Such a configuration is unusual given the shortness of the orbital period, and it must have …
We have used a combination of multiband high-resolution and wide-field ground-based observations to image the Galactic globular cluster M75 (NGC 6864). The extensive photometric sample covers the entire cluster extension, from the very central regions out to the tidal radius, allowing us to determine the center of gravity and to construct the most extended star density profile ever published for this cluster. We also present the first detailed star counts in the very inner regions. The star density profile is well re-produced by a standard King model with core radius r_c ~ 5.4" and intermediat…
The field of the globular cluster NGC 3201 was monitored between 1998 and 2009 in a search for variable stars. $BV$ light curves were obtained for 152 periodic or likely periodic variables, 57 of which are new detections. Thirty-seven newly detected variables are proper motion members of the cluster. Among them we found seven detached or semi-detached eclipsing binaries, four contact binaries, and eight SX Phe pulsators. Four of the eclipsing binaries are located in the turnoff region, one on the lower main sequence and the remaining two slightly above the subgiant branch. Two contact systems …
We have found three new LBV candidates in the star-forming galaxy NGC 4736. They show typical well-known LBV spectra, broad and strong hydrogen lines, He I lines, many Fe II lines, and forbidden [Fe II] and [Fe III]. Using archival Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based telescope data, we have estimated the bolometric magnitudes of these objects from -8.4 to -11.5, temperatures, and reddening. Source NGC 4736_1 (Mv = -10.2 +/- 0.1 mag) demonstrated variability between 2005 and 2018 as Delta V = 1.1 mag and Delta B = 0.82 mag, the object belongs to LBV stars. NGC 4736_2 (Mv < -8.6 mag) shows P…
We used data from the HST UV Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters to select the Blue Straggler Star (BSS) population in four intermediate/high density systems (namely NGC 2808, NGC 6388, NGC 6541 and NGC 7078) through a "UV-guided search". This procedure consists in using the F275W images in each cluster to construct the master list of detected sources, and then force it to the images acquired in the other filters. Such an approach optimizes the detection of relatively hot stars and allows the detection of complete sample of BSSs even in the central region of high-density clusters, beca…
We have used the Spitzer Space Telescope to obtain Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) 24 um photometry for 37 members of the ~100 Myr old open cluster Blanco 1. For the brightest 25 of these stars (where we have 3sigma uncertainties less than 15%), we find significant mid-IR excesses for eight stars, corresponding to a debris disk detection frequency of about 32%. The stars with excesses include two A stars, four F dwarfs and two G dwarfs. The most significant linkage between 24 um excess and any other stellar property for our Blanco 1 sample of stars is with binarity. Blanco 1 me…
We constructed a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) astro-photometric catalog of the central region of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 1261. This catalog, complemented with Gaia DR2 data sampling the external regions, has been used to estimate the structural parameters of the system (i.e., core, half-mass, tidal radii and concentration) from its resolved star density profile. We computed high-precision proper motions thanks to multi-epoch HST data and derived the cluster velocity dispersion profile in the plane of the sky for the innermost region, finding that the system is isotropic. The combinat…
Li et al. (2018) (hereafter L18) detected two apparently distinct populations of blue straggler stars (BSSs) in the young globular cluster NGC 2173, a similar feature as observed in numerous Galactic globular clusters (GCs). Recently, Dalessandro et al. (2018) (D18) compared the observed color--magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of both the cluster and a nearby reference field (although observed with the ACS/WFC instrument). They conclude that the bifurcated pattern of BSSs in NGC 2173 observed by L18 is a field contamination artefact. In this note, we explore the central concentration properties of th…
We present a study, based on Gaia DR2, of the population of blue straggler stars (BSS) in the open clusters Trumpler 5, Trumpler 20, and NGC 2477. All candidates were selected according to their position in the color-magnitude diagram, to their proper motion components, and to their parallax. We also looked for yellow stragglers, i.e., possible evolved blue stragglers. We found that Trumpler 5 hosts a large BSS population, which allowed us to analyze their radial distribution as a probe of the cluster's dynamical status. The BSS distribution was compared with that of red giant branch stars (RG…
It has recently been suggested that the presence of multiple populations showing various amounts of helium enhancement is the rule, rather than the exception, among globular star clusters. An important prediction of this helium enhancement scenario is that the helium-enhanced blue horizontal branch (HB) stars should be brighter than the red HB stars which are not helium-enhanced. In this Letter, we test this prediction in the case of the Galactic globular cluster M3 (NGC 5272), for which the helium-enhancement scenario predicts helium enhancements of > 0.02 in virtually all blue HB stars. Usin…
We used high-quality images acquired with the WFC3 on board the HST to probe the blue straggler star (BSS) population of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 362. We have found two distinct sequences of BSS: this is the second case, after M 30, where such a feature has been observed. Indeed the BSS location, their extension in magnitude and color and their radial distribution within the cluster nicely resemble those observed in M 30, thus suggesting that the same interpretative scenario can be applied: the red BSS sub-population is generated by mass transfer binaries, the blue one by collisions. …
NGC 7789 is a $\sim$1.6 Gyr old, populous open cluster located at $\sim$2000 pc. We characterize the blue straggler stars (BSS) of this cluster using the Ultraviolet (UV) data from the UVIT/AstroSat. We present spectral energy distributions (SED) of 15 BSS candidates constructed using multi-wavelength data ranging from UV to IR wavelengths. In 8 BSS candidates, a single temperature SED is found to be satisfactory. We discover hot companions in 5 BSS candidates. The hot companions with Teff $\sim$11750-15500 K, R $\sim$0.069-0.242 R$_{\odot}$, and L $\sim$0.25-1.55 L$_{\odot}$, are most likely …
We present a quantitative analysis of the low-resolution (4.5 A) spectra of 12 late-B and early-A blue supergiants (BSGs) in the metal-poor dwarf galaxy NGC 3109. A modified method of analysis is presented which does not require use of the Balmer jump as an independent temperature indicator, as used in previous studies. We determine stellar effective temperatures, gravities, metallicities, reddening, and luminosities, and combine our sample with the early-B type BSGs analyzed by Evans et al. (2007) to derive the distance to NGC 3109 using the Flux-weighted Gravity-Luminosity Relation (FGLR). U…
We used a combination of high-resolution optical images acquired with the Hubble Space Telescope and near-IR wide-field data to investigate the stellar density profile and the population of blue straggler star (BSS) in the Galactic globular cluster NGC6256, with the aim of probing its current stage of internal dynamical evolution. We found that the inner stellar density profile significantly deviates from a King model while is well reproduced by a steep cusp with a power-law slope alpha=-0.89, thus implying that the cluster is currently in the post core-collapse (PCC) phase. This is also confi…
Studies on the massive star population in galaxies beyond the Local Group are the key to understand the link between their numbers and modes of star formation in different environments. We present the analysis of the massive star population of the galaxies NGC 1326A, NGC 1425 and NGC 4548 using archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images in the F555W and F814W filters. Through high precision point spread function fitting photometry for all sources in the three fields we identified 7640 candidate blue supergiants, 2314 candidate yellow supergiants, and 4270 candidate re…
Li et al. (2018a; Li18a) claimed that the young stellar cluster NGC2173 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) harbours a bifurcated sequence of blue straggler stars (BSSs), similar to those detected in a few dynamically old globular clusters. However, Dalessandro et al. (2019; D19) re-analyzed the data by taking into account the contamination of the cluster population from LMC field stars, which was completely neglected by L18a. D19 showed that $\sim40\%$ of the selected BSS sample (and especially the population observed along one of the two sequences) is composed of field star interlopers, conc…
We have performed photometric analysis of four Galactic globular clusters (GGCs): NGC 4147, NGC 4590, NGC 5053 and NGC 7492 using far-UV and near-UV filters of the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on-board AstroSat. With the help of color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), we have identified 150 blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs), and 40 blue straggler stars (BSS) in the four GGCs. We study the temperature and radial distribution of BHBs and BSS for the four GGCs.
Due to their extreme helium abundance, the multiple stellar populations of the globular cluster NGC 2808 have been widely investigated from a photometric, spectroscopic, and kinematic perspective. The most striking feature of the color-magnitude diagram of NGC 2808 is the triple main sequence (MS), with the red MS corresponding to a stellar population with primordial helium, and the middle and the blue MS being enhanced in helium up to Y$\sim$0.32 and $\sim$0.38, respectively. A recent study has revealed that this massive cluster hosts at least five distinct stellar populations (A, B, C, D, an…
We present dynamical status of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6656 using spatial distribution of Blue Straggler Stars (BSSs). A combination of multi-wavelength high-resolution space and ground-based data are used to cover a large cluster region. We determine the centre of gravity ($C_{grav}$) and construct the projected density profile of the cluster using the probable cluster members selected from HST and Gaia DR2 proper motion data sets. The projected density profile in the investigated region is nicely reproduced by a single mass King model, with core ($r_{c}$) and tidal ($r_{t}$) radius…
We present the first far-UV (FUV) imaging results of the intermediate-age Galactic open cluster NGC 2818 that has a Planetary nebula (PN) within the field using images taken from the Ultra-violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) aboard AstroSat. We identify cluster members by combining UVIT-detected sources with Gaia EDR3 data. We detect four bright and hot blue straggler stars (BSSs) and two yellow straggler stars (YSSs) based on their location in the optical and FUV-optical color-magnitude diagrams. Based on the parameters estimated using Spectral Energy Distribution (SED), we infer that BSSs are ei…

We report the discovery of a hot white dwarf (WD) companion to a blue straggler star (BSS) in the globular cluster (GC) NGC 5466, based on observations from the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on board AstroSat. The Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of the Far-UV detected BSS NH 84 was constructed by combining the flux measurements from 4 filters of UVIT, with GALEX, GAIA and other ground-based observations. The SED of NH 84 reveals the presence of a hot companion to the BSS. The temperature and radius of the BSS (T$_{\mathrm{eff}} = 8000^{+1000}_{-250}$ K, R/R$_\odot = 1.44 \pm 0.05$) …
The quantitative study of the physical properties and chemical abundances of large samples of massive blue stars at different metallicities is a powerful tool to understand the nature and evolution of these objects. Their analysis beyond the Milky Way is challenging, nonetheless it is doable and the best way to investigate their behavior in different environments. Fulfilling this task in an objective way requires the implementation of automatic analysis techniques that can perform the analyses systematically, minimizing at the same time any possible bias. As part of the ARAUCARIA project we ca…
