The temperature-dependent diffusion coefficients of interstitial helium atom in $α$-Ti are predicted using the transition state theory. The microscopic parameters in the pre-factor and activation energy of the impurity diffusion coefficients are obtained from first-principles total energy and phonon calculations including the full coupling between the vibrational modes of the diffusing atom and the host lattice. The climbing image nudged elastic band (CINEB) method is used to search for the minimum energy pathways and associated saddle point structures. It is demonstrated that the diffusion coefficients within the \emph{xy} plane ($D_{xy}$) is always higher than that along the \emph{z} axis ($D_{z}$), showing remarkable anisotropy. Also, it is found that the formation of helium dimer centered at the octahedral site reduces the total energy and confines the diffusion of helium atoms.
We report the effects of radiation damage on helium diffusion in zircon using data from molecular dynamics simulations. We observe an increase in activation energy for helium diffusion as a result of radiation damage and increasing structural disorder. The activation energy in a heavily damaged region is smaller than in a completely amorphous system which is correlated with remaining order in the cation sublattices of the damaged structure not present in the fully amorphized system. The reduction of activation energy is related to the disappearance of fast diffusion pathways that present in th…
Helium diffusion in metals is the basic requirement of nucleation and growth of bubble, which gives rise to adverse degradation effects on mechanical properties of structural materials in reactors under irradiation. Lattice based Kinetic Monte Carlo approach is widely adopted to study the evolution of helium-vacancy clustering. However, the imple-mentation of Arrhenius law to prediction the event rate of single interstitial helium solute diffusion in metal is not always appropriate due to low-energy barrier. Based on a stochastic model, a modified formula is derived from the Brownian motion up…
Study of helium diffusion in yttria: A multiscale approach based on the density functional theory and kinetic Monte Carlo, with transmission electron microscopy and thermo-desorption spectroscopy
Helium diffusion in metals is the basic requirement of nucleation and growth of bubble, which gives rise to adverse degradation effects on mechanical properties of structural materials in reactors under irradiation. Multi-scale modeling scheme has been developed to study effects of helium on the long-term microstructural evolution. However, the implementation of Arrhenius law based on the quasi-equilibrium reaction process is not appropriate to predict the migration behavior of helium in metals due to low-energy barrier. A coarse-grained formula is required to incorporate the non-equilibrium n…
Based on the in-detail tracking of the movements of atoms in a large number of molecular dynamics simulation boxes, we find that the diffusion of H and He atoms in single-crystal W is composed of non-Markovian jumps. The waiting time distribution of the triggering of jumps is not the usually recognized exponential distribution, but a temperature-dependent power-law distribution. The power-law distribution of the waiting time may lead to clear ergodicity-breaking diffusion, a phenomenon that has formerly been reported to only occur in complex systems such as living biological cells or soft matt…
The addition of alloying elements plays an essential role in helium (He) behaviours produced by transmutation in metal alloys. Effects of solutes (Ni, Cr, Ti, P, Si, C) on the behaviours of He and He-He pair in face-centred cube (fcc) iron have been investigated using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). For the interactions of solutes and He, we found that Ti, P, Si, and C attracts He is more potent than Ni and Cr in fcc iron. We have determined the most stable configuration for the He-He pair, which is the Hesub-Hetetra pair with a binding energy of 1.60 eV…

The estimation of (n-1)2 interdiffusion coefficients in an n component system requires (n-1) diffusion paths to intersect or pass closely in the (n-1) dimensional space according to the body diagonal diffusion couple method. These interdiffusion coefficients are related to n(n-1) intrinsic (or n tracer diffusion coefficients), which cannot be estimated easily following the Kirkendall marker experiment in a multicomponent system despite their importance for understanding the atomic mechanism of diffusion and the physico-mechanical properties of materials. In this study, the estimation of tracer…
Extracting Composition-Dependent Diffusion Coefficients Over a Very Large Composition Range in NiCoFeCrMn High Entropy Alloy Following Strategic Design of Diffusion Couples and Physics Informed Neural Network Numerical Method
A few decades earlier, Kirkaldy and Lane proposed an indirect method of estimating the tracer and intrinsic diffusion coefficients in a ternary system (without showing experimental verification), which is otherwise impossible following the Kirkendall marker experiments. Subsequently, Manning proposed the relations between the tracer and intrinsic diffusion coefficients in the multicomponent system by extending the Onsager formalism (although could not be estimated by intersecting the diffusion couples). By solving these issues in this article, we have now proposed the equations and method for …
A pseudo ternary diffusion couple technique in a multicomponent system by simplifying the mathematical complications of Onsager formalism is proposed for the estimation of composition dependent values of the interdiffusion coefficients. This is otherwise impossible following the conventional method in a system with more than three components. Other alternative methods estimate the average diffusion coefficients over a composition range of random choice and lack physical significance. This method can be followed in a multicomponent system with any number of components on the condition that only…
Diffusion couple technique is an efficient tool for the estimating the chemical diffusion coefficients. Typical experimental uncertainties of the composition profile measurements complicate a correct determination of the interdiffusion coefficients via the standard Boltzmann-Matano, Sauer-Freise or the den Broeder methods, especially for systems with a strong compositional dependence of the interdiffusion coefficient. A new approach for reliable fitting of the experimental profiles with an improved behavior at both ends of the diffusion couple is proposed and tested against the experimental da…
Using helium-3 atom scattering, we have studied the adsorption kinetics, the structure and the diffusional dynamics of atomic hydrogen on the surface of a graphene monolayer on Ni(111). Diffraction measurements reveal a 4$^\circ$ rotated rectangular hydrogen overstructure. Hydrogen adsorption and desorption exhibit activation barriers of $E_a=(89\pm7)\,$meV and $E_d=(1.8\pm0.2)\,$eV, respectively. Helium-3 spin-echo measurements showed no decay of the spatial correlation function (or intermediate scattering function) within the time range of the spectrometer. Hence, we are able to set lower li…
