We show that separable continuous fields over the unit interval whose fibers are stable Kirchberg algebras that satisfy the universal coefficient theorem in KK-theory and have rational K-theory groups are classified up to isomorphism by filtrated K-theory.
In this paper we study the C*-algebras associated to continuous fields over locally compact metrisable zero dimensional spaces whose fibers are Kirchberg C*-algebras satisfying the UCT. We show that these algebras are inductive limits of finite direct sums of Kirchberg algebras and they are classified up to isomorphism by topological invariants.
We show that the K-theory cosheaf is a complete invariant for separable continuous fields with vanishing boundary maps over a finite-dimensional compact metrizable topological space whose fibers are stable Kirchberg algebras with rational K-theory groups satisfying the universal coefficient theorem. We provide a range result for fields in this class with finite-dimensional K-theory. There are versions of both results for unital continuous fields.
We obtain a weak homotopy equivalence type result between two topological groups associated with a Kirchberg algebra: the unitary group of the continuous asymptotic centralizer and the loop group of the automorphism group of the stabilization. This result plays a crucial role in our subsequent work on the classification of poly-$\mathbb{Z}$ group actions on Kirchberg algebras. As a special case, we show that the $K$-groups of the continuous asymptotic centralizer are isomorphic to the $KK$-groups of the Kirchberg algebra.
This is the second part of our serial work on the classification of poly-$\mathbb{Z}$ group actions on Kirchberg algebras. Based on technical results obtained in our previous work, we completely reduce the problem to the classification of continuous fields of Kirchberg algebras over the classifying spaces. As an application, we determine the number of cocycle conjugacy classes of outer $\mathbb{Z}^n$-actions on the Cuntz algebras.
We define continuous C*-algebras over a topological space X and establish some basic results. If X is a locally compact Hausdorff space, continuous C*-algebras over X are equivalent to ordinary continuous C_0(X)-algebras. The main purpose of our study is to prove that every continuous, full, separable, nuclear C*-algebra over X is KK(X)-equivalent to a stable Kirchberg algebra over X. (Here a Kirchberg algebra over X is a separable, nuclear, and strongly purely infinite C*-algebra over X with primitive ideal space homeomorphic to X.) In the case that X is a one-point space, this result is know…
A locally compact group $G$ has the factorization property if the map $$C^*(G)\odot C^*(G)\ni a\otimes b\mapsto λ(a)ρ(b)\in\mathcal B(L^2(G))$$ is continuous with respect to the minimal C*-norm. This paper seeks to initiate a rigorous study of this property in the case of locally compact groups which, in contrast to the discrete case, has been relatively untouched. A partial solution to the question of when the factorization property passes to continuous embeddings is given -- a question which traces back to Kirchberg's seminal work on the topic and is known to be false in general. It is also …
We introduce and study the continuous Rokhlin property for actions of compact groups on C*-algebras. An important technical result is a characterization of the continuous Rokhlin property in terms of asymptotic retracts. As a consequence, we derive strong KK-theoretical obstructions to the continuous Rokhlin property. Using these, we show that the UCT is preserved under formation of crossed products and passage to fixed point algebras by such actions, even in the absence of nuclearity. Our analysis of the KK-theory of the crossed product allows us to prove a $\mathbb{T}$-equivariant version of…
We extend in this paper the characterisation of a separable nuclear \cst-algebra given by Kirchberg proving that given a unital separable continuous field of nuclear C*-algebras A over a compact metrizable space X, the C(X)-algebra A is isomorphic to a unital C(X)-subalgebra of the trivial continuous field C(X;O_2), image of C(X;O_2) by a norm one projection.
We extend in this paper several results of E. Kirchberg, S. Wassermann and the author dealing with continuous fields of C*--algebras to the semi-continuous case. We provide a new characterisation of separable lower semi-continuity C*--bundles and we present exactness criteria for C(X)-algebras and unital bisimplifiable Hopf \cst-algebras.
We observe that a recent theorem of Sato, Toms-White-Winter and Kirchberg-Rordam also holds for certain nonunital C*-algebras. Namely, we show that an algebraically simple, separable, nuclear, nonelementary C*-algebra with strict comparison, whose cone of densely finite traces has as a base a Choquet simplex with compact, finite dimensional extreme boundary, and which admits a continuous rank function, tensorially absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z.
Let A and B be separable nuclear continuous C(X)-algebras over a finite dimensional compact metrizable space X. It is shown that an element $σ$ of the parametrized Kasparov group KK_X(A,B) is invertible if and only if all its fiberwise components $σ_x\in KK(A(x),B(x))$ are invertible. This criterion does not extend to infinite dimensional spaces since there exist nontrivial unital separable continuous fields over the Hilbert cube with all fibers isomorphic to the Cuntz algebra O_2. Several applications to continuous fields of Kirchberg algebras are given. It is also shown that if each fiber of…
Let $X$ be a finite dimensional compact metrizable space. We study a technique which employs semiprojectivity as a tool to produce approximations of $C(X)$-algebras by $C(X)$-subalgebras with controlled complexity. The following applications are given. All unital separable continuous fields of C*-algebras over $X$ with fibers isomorphic to a fixed Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_n$, $n\in\{2,3,...,\infty\}$ are locally trivial. They are trivial if $n=2$ or $n=\infty$. For $n\geq 3$ finite, such a field is trivial if and only if $(n-1)[1_A]=0$ in $K_0(A)$, where $A$ is the C*-algebra of continuous s…
Work of Eagle, Farah, Goldbring, Kirchberg, and Vignati shows that the only separable C*-algebras that admit quantifier elimination in continuous logic are $\mathbb{C},$ $\mathbb{C}^2,$ $M_2(\mathbb{C}),$ and the continuous functions on the Cantor set. We show that, among finite dimensional C*-algebras, quantifier elimination does hold if the language is expanded to include two new predicate symbols: One for minimal projections, and one for pairs of unitarily conjugate projections. Both of these predicates are definable, but not quantifier-free definable, in the usual language of C*-algebras. …
We show that the property of being rationally $K$-stable passes from the fibers of a continuous $C(X)$-algebra to the ambient algebra, under the assumption that the underlying space $X$ is compact, metrizable, and of finite covering dimension. As an application, we show that a crossed product C*-algebra is (rationally) $K$-stable provided the underlying C*-algebra is (rationally) $K$-stable, and the action has finite Rokhlin dimension with commuting towers.
We consider a construction of C*-algebras from continuous piecewise monotone maps on the circle which generalizes the crossed product construction for homeomorphisms and more generally the construction of Renault, Deaconu and Anantharaman-Delaroche for local homeomorphisms. Assuming that the map is surjective and not locally injective we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the simplicity of the C*-algebra and show that it is then a Kirchberg algebra. We provide tools for the calculation of the K-theory groups and turn them into an algorithmic method for Markov maps.
In this paper, we study the boundary quotient C*-algebras associated to products of odometers. One of our main results shows that the boundary quotient C*-algebra of the standard product of $k$ odometers over $n_i$-letter alphabets ($1\le i\le k$) is always nuclear, and that it is a UCT Kirchberg algebra if and only if $\{\ln n_i: 1\le i\le k\}$ is rationally independent, if and only if the associated single-vertex $k$-graph C*-algebra is simple. To achieve this, one of our main steps is to construct a topological $k$-graph such that its associated Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebra is isomorphic to the…
Let $A$ be a unital $C^*$-algebra. Its unitary group, $UA$, contains a wealth of topological information about $A$. However, the homotopy type of $UA$ is out of reach even for $A = M_2(\CC)$. There are two simplifications which have been considered. The first, well-traveled road, is to pass to $π_*(U(A\otimes \KK ))$ which is isomorphic (with a degree shift) to $K_*(A)$. This approach has led to spectacular success in many arenas, as is well-known. A different approach is to consider $π_*(UA)\otimes\QQ $, the rational homotopy of $UA$. In joint work with G. Lupton and N. C. Phillips we have ca…
There are four variants of passive, linear time-invariant systems, described by rational functions: Continuous or Discrete time, Positive or Bounded real. By introducing a quadratic matrix inequality formulation, we present a unifying framework for state-space characterization (a.k.a. Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma) of the above four classes of passive systems. These four families are matrix-convex as rational functions, and a slightly weaker version holds for the corresponding balanced, state-space realization arrays.
Let $R$ be a rational function of degree at least two, let $J_R$ be the Julia set of $R$ and let $μ^L$ be the Lyubich measure of $R$. We study the C$^*$-algebra $\mathcal{MC}_R$ generated by all multiplication operators by continuous functions in $C(J_R)$ and the composition operator $C_R$ induced by $R$ on $L^2(J_R, μ^L)$. We show that the C$^*$-algebra $\mathcal{MC}_R$ is isomorphic to the C$^*$-algebra $\mathcal{O}_R (J_R)$ associated with the complex dynamical system $\{R^{\circ n} \}_{n=1} ^\infty$.
Let $(N,\R,θ)$ be a centrally ergodic W* dynamical system. When $N$ is not a factor, we show that, for each $t\not=0$, the crossed product induced by the time $t$ automorphism $θ_t$ is not a factor if and only if there exist a rational number $r$ and an eigenvalue $s$ of the restriction of $θ$ to the center of $N$, such that $rst=2π$. In the C* setting, minimality seems to be the notion corresponding to central ergodicity. We show that if $(A,\R,α)$ is a minimal unital C* dynamical system and $A$ is either prime or commutative but not simple, then, for each $t\not=0$, the crossed product induc…
