We examine maximal unitarity in the nonplanar case and derive remarkably compact analytic expressions for coefficients of master integrals with two-loop crossed box topology in massless four-point amplitudes in any gauge theory, thereby providing additional steps towards automated computation of the full amplitude. The coefficients are obtained by assembling residues extracted through integration on linear combinations of higher-dimensional tori encircling global poles of the loop integrand. We recover all salient features of two-loop maximal unitarity, such as the existence of unique projectors for each master integral. Several explicit calculations are provided. We also establish exact equivalence of our results and master integral coefficients recently obtained via integrand-level reduction in any renormalizable gauge theory.
We present a method for the computation of hepta-cuts of two loop scattering amplitudes. Four dimensional unitarity cuts are used to factorise the integrand onto the product of six tree-level amplitudes evaluated at complex momentum values. Using Gram matrix constraints we derive a general parameterisation of the integrand which can be computed using polynomial fitting techniques. The resulting expression is further reduced to master integrals using conventional integration by parts methods. We consider both planar and non-planar topologies for 2 to 2 scattering processes and apply the method …
Seven-particle scattering amplitudes in planar super-Yang-Mills theory are believed to belong to a special class of generalised polylogarithm functions called heptagon functions. These are functions with physical branch cuts whose symbols may be written in terms of the 42 cluster A-coordinates on Gr(4,7). Motivated by the success of the hexagon bootstrap programme for constructing six-particle amplitudes we initiate the systematic study of the symbols of heptagon functions. We find that there is exactly one such symbol of weight six which satisfies the MHV last-entry condition and is finite in…
Using the multivariate residue calculus of Leray, we give a precise definition of the notion of a cut Feynman integral in dimensional regularization, as a residue evaluated on the variety where some of the propagators are put on shell. These are naturally associated to Landau singularities of the first type. Focusing on the one-loop case, we give an explicit parametrization to compute such cut integrals, with which we study some of their properties and list explicit results for maximal and next-to-maximal cuts. By analyzing homology groups, we show that cut integrals associated to Landau singu…
We extend the maximal unitarity method to amplitude contributions whose cuts define multidimensional algebraic varieties. The technique is valid to all orders and is explicitly demonstrated at three loops in gauge theories with any number of fermions and scalars in the adjoint representation. Deca-cuts realized by replacement of real slice integration contours by higher-dimensional tori encircling the global poles are used to factorize the planar triple box onto a product of trees. We apply computational algebraic geometry and multivariate complex analysis to derive unique projectors for all m…
We study the ABDK relation using maximal cuts of one- and two-loop integrals with up to five external legs. We show how to find a special combination of integrals that allows the relation to exist, and how to reconstruct the terms with one-loop integrals squared. The reconstruction relies on the observation that integrals across different loop orders can have support on the same generalized unitarity cuts and can share global poles. We discuss the appearance of nonhomologous integration contours in multivariate residues. Their origin can be understood in simple terms, and their existence enabl…
We extend the notion of generalized unitarity cuts to accommodate loop integrals with higher powers of propagators. Such integrals frequently arise in for example integration-by-parts identities, Schwinger parametrizations and Mellin-Barnes representations. The method is applied to reduction of integrals with doubled and tripled propagators and direct extract of integral coefficients at one and two loops. Our algorithm is based on degenerate multivariate residues and computational algebraic geometry.
We find a permutation relation among Yangian Invariants -- two Yangian Invariants with adjacent external lines exchanged are related by a simple kinematic factor. This relation is shown to be equivalent to U(1) decoupling and Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) relation at the level of maximal helicity violating (MHV) amplitudes. Together with the newly found permutation relation and using unitarity cuts to remove ambiguity in the definition of loop momenta of cut amplitudes due to the nonplanar legs, we propose a systematic way of reconstructing the the integrands of nonplanar MHV amplitudes up to …
We explore maximal unitarity for nonplanar two-loop integrals with up to four massive external legs. In this framework, the amplitude is reduced to a basis of master integrals whose coefficients are extracted from maximal cuts. The hepta-cut of the nonplanar double box defines a nodal algebraic curve associated with a multiply pinched genus-3 Riemann surface. All possible configurations of external masses are covered by two distinct topological pictures in which the curve decomposes into either six or eight Riemann spheres. The procedure relies on consistency equations based on vanishing of in…
We present the Mathematica package MultivariateResidues, which allows for the efficient evaluation of multivariate residues based on methods from computational algebraic geometry. Multivariate residues appear in several contexts of scattering amplitude computations. Examples include applications to the extraction of master integral coefficients from maximal unitarity cuts, the construction of canonical bases of loop integrals and the construction of tree amplitudes from scattering equations.
Scattering amplitudes at loop level can be reduced to a basis of linearly independent Feynman integrals. The integral coefficients are extracted from generalized unitarity cuts which define algebraic varieties. The topology of an algebraic variety characterizes the difficulty of applying maximal cuts. In this work, we analyze a novel class of integrals whose maximal cuts give rise to an algebraic variety with irrational irreducible components. As a phenomenologically relevant example we examine the two-loop planar double-box contribution with internal massive lines. We derive unique projectors…
We propose a first implementation of the integrand-reduction method for two-loop scattering amplitudes. We show that the residues of the amplitudes on multi-particle cuts are polynomials in the irreducible scalar products involving the loop momenta, and that the reduction of the amplitudes in terms of master integrals can be realized through polynomial fitting of the integrand, without any apriori knowledge of the integral basis. We discuss how the polynomial shapes of the residues determine the basis of master integrals appearing in the final result. We present a four-dimensional constructive…
We describe the application of a novel approach for the reduction of scattering amplitudes, based on multivariate polynomial division, which we have recently presented. This technique yields the complete integrand decomposition for arbitrary amplitudes, regardless of the number of loops. It allows for the determination of the residue at any multiparticle cut, whose knowledge is a mandatory prerequisite for applying the integrand-reduction procedure. By using the division modulo Groebner basis, we can derive a simple integrand recurrence relation that generates the multiparticle pole decomposit…
In four-dimensional theories with massless particles, the one-loop amplitudes can be expressed in terms of a basis of scalar integrals and rational terms. Since the scalar bubble integrals are the only UV divergent integrals, the sum of the bubble coefficients captures the 1-loop UV behavior. In particular, in a renormalizable theory the sum of the bubble coefficients equals the tree-level amplitude times a proportionality constant that is related to the one-loop beta function coefficient beta_0. In this paper, we study how this proportionality is achieved from the viewpoint of on-shell amplit…
We extend the applications of prescriptive unitarity beyond the planar limit to provide local, polylogarithmic, integrand-level representations of six-particle MHV scattering amplitudes in both maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and gravity. The integrand basis we construct is diagonalized on a spanning set of non-vanishing leading singularities that ensures the manifest matching of all soft-collinear singularities in both theories. As a consequence, this integrand basis naturally splits into infrared-finite and infrared-divergent parts, with hints toward an integrand-level exponentiat…
In this article a first step is made towards the extension of Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW) tree level on-shell recursion relations to integrands and integrals of scattering amplitudes to arbitrary loop order. Surprisingly, it is shown that the large BCFW shift limit of the integrands has the same structure as the corresponding tree level amplitude in any minimally coupled Yang-Mills theory in four or more dimensions. This implies that these integrands can be reconstructed from a subset of their `single cuts'. The main tool is powercounting Feynman graphs in a special lightcone gauge choic…
This thesis is focused on the development of new mathematical methods for computing multi-loop scattering amplitudes in gauge theories. In this work we combine, for the first time, the unitarity-based construction for integrands, and the recently introduced integrand-reduction through multivariate polynomial division. After discussing the generic features of this novel reduction algorithm, we will apply it to the one- and two-loop five-point amplitudes in ${\cal N}=4$ sYM. The integrands of the multiple-cuts are generated from products of tree-level amplitudes within the super-amplitudes forma…
