OCR has been an active research area since last few decades. OCR performs the recognition of the text in the scanned document image and converts it into editable form. The OCR process can have several stages like pre-processing, segmentation, recognition and post processing. The pre-processing stage is a crucial stage for the success of OCR, which mainly deals with noise removal. In the present paper, a modified technique for noise removal named as K-Algorithm has been proposed, which has two stages as filtering and binarization. The proposed technique shows improvised results in comparison to median filtering technique.

Document Layout Analysis is a fundamental step in Handwritten Text Processing systems, from the extraction of the text lines to the type of zone it belongs to. We present a system based on artificial neural networks which is able to determine not only the baselines of text lines present in the document, but also performs geometric and logic layout analysis of the document. Experiments in three different datasets demonstrate the potential of the method and show competitive results with respect to state-of-the-art methods.

Digital libraries store images which can be highly degraded and to index this kind of images we resort to word spot- ting as our information retrieval system. Information retrieval for handwritten document images is more challenging due to the difficulties in complex layout analysis, large variations of writing styles, and degradation or low quality of historical manuscripts. This paper presents a simple innovative learning-free method for word spotting from large scale historical documents combining Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and spatial sampling. This method offers three advantages: firstly,…
Segmenting handwritten document images into regions with homogeneous patterns is an important pre-processing step for many document images analysis tasks. Hand-labeling data to train a deep learning model for layout analysis requires significant human effort. In this paper, we present an unsupervised deep learning method for page segmentation, which revokes the need for annotated images. A siamese neural network is trained to differentiate between patches using their measurable properties such as number of foreground pixels, and average component height and width. The network is trained that s…

Automatically recognizing the layout of handwritten documents is an important step towards useful extraction of information from those documents. The most common application is to feed downstream applications such as automatic text recognition and keyword spotting; however, the recognition of the layout also helps to establish relationships between elements in the document which allows to enrich the information that can be extracted. Most of the modern document layout analysis systems are designed to address only one part of the document layout problem, namely: baseline detection or region seg…

Segmentation of handwritten document images into text lines and words is one of the most significant and challenging tasks in the development of a complete Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system. This paper addresses the automatic segmentation of text words directly from unconstrained Bangla handwritten document images. The popular Distance transform (DT) algorithm is applied for locating the outer boundary of the word images. This technique is free from generating the over-segmented words. A simple post-processing procedure is applied to isolate the under-segmented word images, if any. Th…

We present a new handwritten text segmentation method by training a convolutional neural network (CNN) in an end-to-end manner. Many conventional methods addressed this problem by extracting connected components and then classifying them. However, this two-step approach has limitations when handwritten components and machine-printed parts are overlapping. Unlike conventional methods, we develop an end-to-end deep CNN for this problem, which does not need any preprocessing steps. Since there is no publicly available dataset for this goal and pixel-wise annotations are time-consuming and costly,…

Unconstrained handwriting recognition is an essential task in document analysis. It is usually carried out in two steps. First, the document is segmented into text lines. Second, an Optical Character Recognition model is applied on these line images. We propose the Simple Predict & Align Network: an end-to-end recurrence-free Fully Convolutional Network performing OCR at paragraph level without any prior segmentation stage. The framework is as simple as the one used for the recognition of isolated lines and we achieve competitive results on three popular datasets: RIMES, IAM and READ 2016. The…

We start by employing a transformer-based architecture that incorporates three pretext tasks as learning objectives to be optimized during pre-training without the usage of labeled data. Each of the pretext objectives is specifically tailored for the final downstream tasks. We conduct several ablation experiments that confirm the design choice of the selected pretext tasks. Handwritten character recognition is a hot topic for research nowadays. If we can convert a handwritten piece of paper into a text-searchable document using the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technique, we can easily understand the content and do not need to read the handwritten document. OCR in the English language is very common, but in the Bengali language, it is very hard to find a good quality OCR application. If we can merge machine learning and deep learning with OCR, it could be a huge contribution to this field. Various researchers have proposed a number of strategies for recogni…

Handwritten character recognition is a challenging research in the field of document image analysis over many decades due to numerous reasons such as large writing styles variation, inherent noise in data, expansive applications it offers, non-availability of benchmark databases etc. There has been considerable work reported in literature about creation of the database for several Indic scripts but the Tamil script is still in its infancy as it has been reported only in one database [5]. In this paper, we present the work done in the creation of an exhaustive and large unconstrained Tamil Hand…
In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the research area of Question Answering (QA) on document images. Current QA approaches from the Document Image Analysis community are mainly focusing on machine-printed documents and perform rather limited on handwriting. This is mainly due to the reduced recognition performance on handwritten documents. To tackle this problem, we propose a recognition-free QA approach, especially designed for handwritten document image collections. We present a robust document retrieval method, as well as two QA models. Our approaches outperform the stat…
We address the problem of predicting similarity between a pair of handwritten document images written by different individuals. This has applications related to matching and mining in image collections containing handwritten content. A similarity score is computed by detecting patterns of text re-usages between document images irrespective of the minor variations in word morphology, word ordering, layout and paraphrasing of the content. Our method does not depend on an accurate segmentation of words and lines. We formulate the document matching problem as a structured comparison of the word di…

Handwritten document images can be highly affected by degradation for different reasons: Paper ageing, daily-life scenarios (wrinkles, dust, etc.), bad scanning process and so on. These artifacts raise many readability issues for current Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) algorithms and severely devalue their efficiency. In this paper, we propose an end to end architecture based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to recover the degraded documents into a clean and readable form. Unlike the most well-known document binarization methods, which try to improve the visual quality of the degra…
This paper describes a method to localise all those areas which may constitute the date field in an Indian handwritten document. Spatial patterns of the date field are studied from various handwritten documents and an algorithm is developed through statistical analysis to identify those sets of connected components which may constitute the date. Common date patterns followed in India are considered to classify the date formats in different classes. Reported results demonstrate promising performance of the proposed approach

There is a large collection of Handwritten English paper documents of Historical and Scientific importance. But paper documents are not recognized directly by computer. Hence the closest way of indexing these documents is by storing their document digital image. Hence a large database of document images can replace the paper documents. This paper applies the technique of word spotting using Modified Character Shape Code to Handwritten English document images for quick and efficient query search…
When digitizing a document into an image, it is common to include a surrounding border region to visually indicate that the entire document is present in the image. This work addresses the problem of Question Answering (QA) on handwritten document collections. Unlike typical QA and Visual Question Answering (VQA) formulations where the answer is a short text, we aim to locate a document snippet where the answer lies. The proposed approach works without recognizing the text in the documents. We argue that the recognition-free approach is suitable for handwritten documents and historical collections where robust text recognition is often difficult. At the same time, for human users, document image snippets containing answers act as a valid alternative to te…

Handwritten text recognition for historical documents is an important task but it remains difficult due to a lack of sufficient training data in combination with a large variability of writing styles and degradation of historical documents. While recurrent neural network architectures are commonly used for handwritten text recognition, they are often computationally expensive to train and the benefit of recurrence drastically differs by task. For these reasons, it is important to consider non-recurrent architectures. In the context of handwritten date recognition, we propose an architecture ba…
