Let $A$ be a set of $n$ positive integers. We say that a subset $B$ of $A$ is a divisor of $A$, if the sum of the elements in $B$ divides the sum of the elements in $A$. We are interested in the following extremal problem. For each $n$, what is the maximum number of divisors a set of $n$ positive integers can have? We determine this function exactly for all values of $n$. Moreover, for each $n$ we characterize all sets that achieve the maximum. We also prove results for the $k$-subset analogue of our problem. For this variant, we determine the function exactly in the special case that $n=2k$. We also characterize all sets that achieve this bound when $n=2k$.
If $s$ is a positive integer and $A$ is a set of positive integers, we say that $B$ is an $s$-divisor of $A$ if $\sum_{b\in B} b\mid s\sum_{a\in A} a$. We study the maximal number of $k$-subsets of an $n$-element set that can be $s$-divisors. We provide a counterexample to a conjecture of Huynh that for $s=1$, the answer is $\binom{n-1}{k}$ with only finitely many exceptions, but prove that adding a necessary condition makes this true. Moreover, we show that under a similar condition, the answer is $\binom{n-1}{k}$ with only finitely many exceptions for each $s$.
The famous lower bound $α(G)\geq \sum_{u\in V(G)}\frac{1}{d_G(u)+1}$ on the independence number $α(G)$ of a graph $G$ due to Caro and Wei is known to be tight if and only if the components of $G$ are cliques, and has been generalized several times in the context of large degenerate subsets and small dynamic monopolies. We characterize the extremal graphs for a generalization due to Ackerman, Ben-Zwi, and Wolfovitz. Furthermore, we give a simple proof of a related bound concerning partial incentives due to Cordasco, Gargano, Rescigno, and Vaccaro, and also characterize the corresponding extrema…
In 1991, McKay and Radziszowski proved that, however each 3-subset of a 13-set is assigned one of two colours, there is some 4-subset whose four 3-subsets have the same colour. More than 25 years later, this remains the only non-trivial classical Ramsey number known for hypergraphs. In this article, we find all the extremal colourings of the 3-subsets of a 12-set and list some of their properties. Using the catalogue, we provide an answer to a question of Dudek, Fleur, Mubayi and Rödl about the size-Ramsey numbers of hypergraphs.
Let $Q(n)$ denote the count of the primitive subsets of the integers $\{1,2\ldots n\}$. We give a new proof that $Q(n) = α^{(1+o(1))n}$ which allows us to give a good error term and to improve upon the lower bound for the value of this constant $α$. We also show that the method developed can be applied to many similar problems that can be stated in terms of the divisor graph, including other questions about primitive sets, geometric-progression-free sets, and the divisor graph path-cover problem.
In the study of topological indices two negative correlations are well known: that between the number of subtrees and the Wiener index (sum of distances), and that between the Merrifield-Simmons index (number of independent vertex subsets) and the Hosoya index (number of independent edge subsets). That is, among a certain class of graphs, the extremal graphs that maximize one index usually minimize the other, and vice versa. In this paper, we first study the numbers of subtrees in unicyclic graphs and unicyclic graphs with a given girth, further confirming its opposite behavior to the Wiener i…
An identifying code of a (di)graph $G$ is a dominating subset $C$ of the vertices of $G$ such that all distinct vertices of $G$ have distinct (in)neighbourhoods within $C$. In this paper, we classify all finite digraphs which only admit their whole vertex set in any identifying code. We also classify all such infinite oriented graphs. Furthermore, by relating this concept to a well known theorem of A. Bondy on set systems we classify the extremal cases for this theorem.
Inspired by connections described in a recent paper by Mark L. Lewis, between the common divisor graph $\Ga(X)$ and the prime vertex graph $Δ(X)$, for a set $X$ of positive integers, we define the bipartite divisor graph $B(X)$, and show that many of these connections flow naturally from properties of $B(X)$. In particular we establish links between parameters of these three graphs, such as number and diameter of components, and we characterise bipartite graphs that can arise as $B(X)$ for some $X$. Also we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of subconfigurations of $B(X)$, fo…
We refine previous results to provide examples, and in some cases precise classifications, of extremal subsets of {1,...,n} containing no solutions to a wide class of non-invariant, homogeneous linear equations in three variables, i.e.: equations of the form ax+by=cz with a+b \neq c.
We say that a set system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ shatters a given set $S\subseteq [n]$ if $2^S={F \cap S : F \in \mathcal{F}}$. The Sauer inequality states that in general, a set system $\mathcal{F}$ shatters at least $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. Here we concentrate on the case of equality. A set system is called shattering-extremal if it shatters exactly $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. We characterize shattering extremal set systems of Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension 1 in terms of their inclusion graphs. Also from the perspective of extremality, we relate set systems of bounded Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimens…
We say that a set system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ shatters a set $S\subseteq [n]$ if every possible subset of $S$ appears as the intersection of $S$ with some element of $\mathcal{F}$ and we denote by $\text{Sh}(\mathcal{F})$ the family of sets shattered by $\mathcal{F}$. According to the Sauer-Shelah lemma we know that in general, every set system $\mathcal{F}$ shatters at least $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets and we call a set system shattering-extremal if $|\text{Sh}(\mathcal{F})|=|\mathcal{F}|$. Mészáros and Rónyai, among other things, gave an algebraic characterization of shattering-extremalit…
We say that a set system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ shatters a given set $S\subseteq [n]$ if $2^S= \{F~\cap~S:~F~\in~\mathcal{F}\}$. The Sauer-Shelah lemma states that in general, a set system $\mathcal{F}$ shatters at least $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. Here we concentrate on the case of equality. A set system is called \emph{shattering-extremal} if it shatters exactly $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. A conjecture of Rónyai and the second author and of Litman and Moran states that if a family is shattering-extremal then one can add a set to it and the resulting family is still shattering-extremal. Here we p…

Let $R$ be a ring with unity. The cozero-divisor graph of a ring $R$ is an undirected simple graph whose vertices are the set of all non-zero and non-unit elements of $R$ and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $x \notin Ry$ and $y \notin Rx$. The reduced cozero-divisor graph of a ring $R$, is an undirected simple graph whose vertex set is the set of all nontrivial principal ideals of $R$ and two distinct vertices $(a)$ and $(b)$ are adjacent if and only if $(a) \not\subset (b)$ and $(b) \not\subset (a)$. In this paper, we characterize all classes of finite non-local …
Resolving a conjecture of Methuku and the first author we determine the size of the largest family of subsets of an $n$-element set avoiding both $Y_k$ and $Y_k'$ as induced subposets. The result follows as a consequence of the analogous result on a cyclical grid poset.
A subset $A$ of a group $G$ is called product-free if there is no solution to $a=bc$ with $a,b,c$ all in $A$. It is easy to see that the largest product-free subset of the symmetric group $S_n$ is obtained by taking the set of all odd permutations, i.e. $S_n \setminus A_n$, where $A_n$ is the alternating group. By contrast, it is a long-standing open problem to find the largest product-free subset of $A_n$. We solve this problem for large $n$, showing that the maximum size is achieved by the previously conjectured extremal examples, namely families of the form $\{π~|~π(x)\in I, π(I)\cap I=\emp…
In this short note, we address two problems in extremal set theory regarding intersecting families. The first problem is a question posed by Kupavskii: is it true that given two disjoint cross-intersecting families $\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{B} \subset \binom{[n]}{k}$, they must satisfy $\min\{|\mathcal{A}|, |\mathcal{B}|\} \le \frac{1}{2} \binom{n-1}{k-1}$? We give an affirmative answer for $n \ge 2k^2$, and construct families showing that this range is essentially the best one could hope for, up to a constant factor. The second problem is a conjecture of Frankl. It states that for $n \ge 3k$, th…
We study thresholds for extremal properties of random discrete structures. We determine the threshold for Szemerédi's theorem on arithmetic progressions in random subsets of the integers and its multidimensional extensions and we determine the threshold for Turán-type problems for random graphs and hypergraphs. In particular, we verify a conjecture of Kohayakawa, Łuczak, and Rödl for Turán-type problems in random graphs. Similar results were obtained by Conlon and Gowers.
We prove that if $A \subseteq [X, 2X]$ and $B \subseteq [Y, 2Y]$ are sets of integers such that $\gcd(a,b) \geq D$ for at least $δ|A||B|$ pairs $(a,b) \in A \times B$ then $|A||B| \ll_{\varepsilon} δ^{-2 - \varepsilon} XY/D^2$. This is a new result even when $δ= 1$. The proof uses ideas of Koukoulopoulos and Maynard and some additional combinatorial arguments.
For a weight-set $A\subseteq \mathbb Z_n$, the $A$-weighted zero-sum constant $C_A(n)$ is defined to be the smallest natural number $k$, such that any sequence of $k$ elements in $\mathbb Z_n$ has an $A$-weighted zero-sum subsequence of consecutive terms. A sequence of length $C_A(n)-1$ in $\mathbb Z_n$ which does not have any $A$-weighted zero-sum subsequence of consecutive terms will be called a $C$-extremal sequence for $A$. Let $\big(\frac{x}{n}\big)$ denote the Jacobi symbol of $x\in\mathbb Z_n$. We characterize the $C$-extremal sequences for the weight-set $S(n)=\big\{\,x\in U(n):\big(\f…
Given two phylogenetic trees with the $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ leaf-set the maximum agreement subtree problem asks what is the maximum size of the subset $A \subseteq \{1, \ldots, n\}$ such that the two trees are equivalent when restricted to $A$. The long-standing extremal version of this problem focuses on the smallest number of leaves, $\mathrm{mast}(n)$, on which any two (binary and unrooted) phylogenetic trees with $n$ leaves must agree. In this work we prove that this number grows asymptotically as $Θ(\log n)$; thus closing the enduring gap between the lower and upper asymptotic bounds on $\ma…
