We report high-resolution hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy results on (Ga,Mn)As films as a function of Mn doping. Supported by theoretical calculations we identify, over the entire 1% to 13% Mn doping range, the electronic character of the states near the top of the valence band. Magnetization and temperature dependent core-level photoemission spectra reveal how the delocalized character of the Mn states enables the bulk ferromagnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As.
Possible topological nature of Kondo and mixed valence insulators has been a recent topic of interest in condensed matter physics. Attention has focused on SmB6, which has long been known to exhibit low temperature transport anomaly, whose origin is of independent interest. We argue that it is possible to resolve the topological nature of surface states by uniquely accessing the surface electronic structure of the low temperature anomalous transport regime through combining state-of-the-art laser- and synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with or without spin reso…
Hard x-ray photoemission and optical spectroscopies have been performed on YbS and Yb metal to determine the precise $f$-electron occupation. A comparison of the photoemission spectra with the energy loss functions in bulk and surface, obtained from optical reflectivity, enables us to distinguish between the energy loss satellite of Yb$^{2+}$ peak and Yb$^{3+}$ multiplet. The results clearly indicate a purely divalent Yb state except for the surface of YbS. We demonstrate that the present method is highly reliable in identifying the electronic structure and the mean valence in $f$-electron sys…
A single crystal monolith of La0.9Sr0.1FeO3 and thin pulsed laser deposited film of La0.8Sr0.2Fe0.8Ni0.2O3 were subject to angle integrated valence band photoemission spectroscopy in ultra high vacuum and conductivity experiments in ambient air at temperatures from 300 K to 800 K. Except for several sputtering and annealing cycles, the specimen were not prepared in-situ.. Peculiar changes in the temperature dependent, bulk representative conductivity profile as a result of reversible phase transitions, and irreversible chemical changes are semi-quantitatively reflected by the intensity variati…
We study the ultrafast phonon response of mixed-valence perovskite Cs$_2$Au$_2$I$_6$ using pump-probe spectroscopy under high-pressure in a diamond anvil cell. We observed a remarkable softening and broadening of the Au - I stretching phonon mode with both applied pressure and photoexcitation. Using a double-pump scheme we measured a lifetime of the charge transfer excitation into single valence Au$^{2+}$ of less than 4 ps, which is an indication of the local character of the Au$^{2+}$ excitation. Furthermore, the strong similarity between the pressure and fluence dependence of the phonon soft…
The correlated-band theory implemented as a combination of the local-density approximation with the dynamical mean-field theory is applied to PuO2. An insulating electronic structure, consistent with the experimental valence-band photoemission spectra, is obtained. The calculations yield a nonmagnetic ground state that is characterized by a noninteger filling of the plutonium 5f shell. The noninteger filling as well as the satellites appearing in the 4f core-level photoemission spectra originate in a sizable hybridization of the 5f shell with the 2p states of oxygen.
An x-ray diffraction study reveals the charge ordering structure in an intermediate valence magnet YbPd with a CsCl-structure. The valence of the Yb ions forms an incommensurate structure, characterized by the wavevector (+-0.07 +-0.07 1/2) below 130 K. At 105 K, the incommensurate structure turns into a commensurate structure, characterized by the wavevector (0 0 1/2). Based on the resonant x-ray diffraction spectra of the superlattice reflections, the valences of the Yb ions below 105 K are found to be 3+ and 2.6+. The origin of the long wavelength modulation is discussed with the aid of an …
The emergence of complex electronic behaviour from simple ingredients has resulted in the discovery of numerous states of matter. Many examples are found in systems exhibiting geometric magnetic frustration, which prevents simultaneous satisfaction of all magnetic interactions. This frustration gives rise to complex magnetic properties such as chiral spin structures orbitally-driven magnetism, spin-ice behavior exhibiting Dirac strings with magnetic monopoles, valence bond solids, and spin liquids. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of LiZn2Mo3O8, a geometrically frustrated anti…
Iron resonant valance band photoemission spectra of Sr substituted LaFe0.75Ni0.25 O3-δ have been recorded across the Fe 2p - 3d absorption threshold to obtain Fe specific spectral information on the 3d projected partial density of states. Comparison with La1-xSrxFeO3 resonant VB PES literature data suggests that substitution of Fe by Ni forms electron holes which are mainly O 2p character. Substitution of La by Sr increases the hole concentration to an extent that the eg structure vanishes. The variation of the eg and t2g structures is paralleled by the changes in the electrical conductivity.
Charge order is a central feature of the physics of cuprate superconductors and is known to arise from a modulation of holes with primarily oxygen character. Low-valence nickelate superconductors also host charge order, but the electronic character of this symmetry breaking is unsettled. Here, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ni $L_2$-edge, we identify intertwined involvements of Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$, $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$, and O $2p_σ$ orbitals in the formation of diagonal charge order in an overdoped low-valence nickelate La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$. The Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, strong…
The utility of resonant scattering spectroscopies for identifying electronic symmetries and density distributions changes dramatically as a function of photon energy. In the hard X-ray regime, strong core hole monopole potentials tend to produce X-ray absorption features with well defined electron number on the scattering site. By contrast, in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), resonant scattering from Mott insulators tends to reveal spectra that are characteristic of only the nominal valence, and are insensitive to deviations from nominal valence brought on by metal-ligand hybridization. Here, ato…
The valence state of Yb ions in beta-YbAlB4 and its polymorph alpha-YbAlB4 has been investigated by using X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy in SPring-8 at temperatures from 2 to 280 K. The observed Yb valence is 2.78 +- 0.01 in beta-YbAlB4 at 2 K by using the X-ray emission spectroscopy. The valence is found to gradually increase with increasing temperature toward the trivalent state, and the characteristic temperature of the valence fluctuation is expected to be about 290 K. We also found a small increase in the Yb valence (~0.002) by applying a magnetic field of 32 T at 40 K to beta…
We analyze the electronic structure of a mixed-valence ladder system. We find that structural anisotropy and complex electron correlations lead to on-rung charge localization and insulating character. Charge fluctuations within the rung of the ladder interact strongly to the lattice degrees of freedom, which gives rise to large pseudo Jahn--Teller effects. The phase transition in NaV$_2$O$_5$ should be driven by this kind of mechanism.
The recent discovery of spin-triplet superconductivity emerging from a non-magnetic parent state in UTe$_2$ has stimulated great interest in the underlying mechanism of Cooper pairing. Experimental characterization of short-range electronic and magnetic correlations is vital to understanding these phenomena. Here we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and atomic multiplet-based modeling to shed light on the active debate between 5$f^2$6$d^1$-based models with singlet crystal field states versus 5$f^3$-based models that predict atomic Kramers dou…
Time-resolved ARPES gives access to the band structure and ultrafast dynamics of excited electronic states in solids. The orbital character of the bands close to the Fermi level is essential to understand the origin of several exotic phenomena in quantum materials. By performing polarization dependent time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and by analyzing the chirality of the photoelectron yield for two different crystal orientations, we identify the orbital character of bands below and above the chemical potential for the Dirac semimetal BaNiS2. Our results illustrate how the co…
Resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) was used to determine the pressure dependence of the f-electron occupancy in the Kondo insulator SmB6. Applied pressure reduces the f-occupancy, but surprisingly, the material maintains a significant divalent character up to a pressure of at least 35 GPa. Thus, the closure of the resistive activation energy gap and onset of magnetic order are not driven by stabilization of an integer valent state. Over the entire pressure range, the material maintains a remarkably stable intermediate valence that can in principle support a nontrivial band structure.
We report a systematic study of Sm valence in the prototypical intermediate valence compound SmB$_6$. Sm mean valence, $v_{\rm Sm}$, was measured by X-ray absorption spectroscopy as functions of pressure ($1<P<13$ GPa) and temperature ($3<T<300$ K). Pressure induced magnetic order (MO) was detected above $P_c = 10$ GPa by resistivity measurements. A shift toward localized $4f$ state with increasing $P$ and/or $T$ is evident from an increase in $v_{\rm Sm}$. However $v_{\rm Sm}$ at $P_c$ is anomalously far below 3, which differs from the general case of nonmagnetic-magnetic transition in Yb and…
The electronic structures of two mixed valence insulators YbB$_6$ and YbB$_12$ are studied by using the local density approximation (LDA) supplemented with the Gutzwiller method and dynamic mean field theory (DMFT). YbB$_6$ is found to be a moderately correlated Z$_2$ topological insulator, similar to SmB$_6$ but having much larger bulk band gap. Notably, YbB$_12$ is revealed to be in a new novel quantum state, strongly correlated topological crystalline Kondo insulator, which is characterized by its non-zero mirror Chern number. The surface calculations find odd (three) and even (four) number…
Neutron diffraction experiments on TmTe at pressures up to 7 GPa are reported. The semiconductor-to-metal transition occurring at 2 GPa in this compound is accompanied by the appearance of strong ferromagnetic exchange interactions producing a Curie temperature as high as 14 K. This behavior is characteristic for the incipient mixed-valence regime just above the transition pressure and traced back to the release of a small concentration of free charge carriers in the material. The steep decrease of both the Curie temperature and ordered magnetic moment occurring at higher pressures emphasizes …
We present calculations of the interplane charge dynamics in the normal state of cuprate superconductors within the valence-bond dynamical mean-field theory. We show that by varying the hole doping, the c-axis optical conductivity and resistivity dramatically change character, going from metallic-like at large doping to insulating-like at low-doping. We establish a clear connection between the behavior of the c-axis optical and transport properties and the destruction of coherent quasiparticles as the pseudogap opens in the antinodal region of the Brillouin zone at low doping. We show that our…
The discovery of superconductivity in square-planar low valence nickelates has ignited a vigorous debate regarding their essential electronic properties: Do these materials have appreciable oxygen charge-transfer character akin to the cuprates, or are they in a distinct Mott-Hubbard regime where oxygen plays a minimal role? Here, we resolve this question using O $K$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of the low valence nickelate La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$ and a prototypical cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.35$). As expected, the cuprate lies deep in the charge-t…
Using angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy we have probed the novel LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs superconductor over a wide range of photon energies and temperatures. We have provided the first full characterization of the orbital character of the VB DOS and of the magnitude of the d-p hybridization energy. Finally, we have identified two characteristic temperatures: 90K where a pseudogap-like feature appears to close and 120K where a sudden change in the DOS near E$_F$ occurs. We associate these phenomena with the SDW magnetic ordering and the structural transition seen in the parent compo…
We have investigated the band structure and the band symmetry of mixed-valence insulator SmB$_{6}$ systematically within the density functional theory (DFT). We have analyzed the symmetries and characters of Sm $4f$ and $5d$ bands near the Fermi level ($E_F$) in terms of the non-relativistic real cubic bases as well as the relativistic complex bases incorporating the spin-orbit coupling and the cubic crystal field. Further, we have found that the semi-core band located at $\sim 15$ eV below $E_F$ has the mixed parity and thereby affects the parity eigenvalues of the special ${\bf k}$-points co…
We present the single-crystalline x-ray diffraction study on the Ba4Ru3O10 consisting of the corner-shared Ru3O12 trimers. The crystal structure is re-determined from 78 to 300 K across an antiferromagnetic transition at 105 K. The orthorhombic symmetry (Cmca, space group No. 64) is preserved at all temperatures measured. This structure presents exceptionally long Ru-O distances characterized by a significant distribution within the Ru3O12 trimer. A bond valence sum calculation suggests that the charge disproportionation within the Ru3O12 trimer emerges even at room temperature, which we ascri…
We have investigated the electronic structure of Na$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ using x-ray absorption spectroscopy together with Anderson impurity model calculations with full multiplets. We show Na$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ taking a novel mixed-valence electronic state in which the positive charge-transfer (CT) and the negative self-doped states coexist. While CaCr$_2$O$_4$ (one end member) exhibits a typical CT nature with strong covalent character, Na substitution causes a self-doped state with an oxygen hole. In NaCr$_2$O$_4$ (the other end member), positive CT and negative self-doped states …
We have performed pressure dependent X-ray diffraction and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy experiments on USb$_2$ to further characterize the AFM-FM transition occurring near 8 GPa. We have found the magnetic transition coincides with a tetragonal to orthorhombic transition resulting in a 17% volume collapse as well as a transient $\textit{f}$-occupation enhancement. Compared to UAs$_2$ and UAsS, USb$_2$ shows a reduced bulk modulus and transition pressure and an increased volume collapse at the structural transition. Except for an enhancement across the transition region, the $\textit{f}…
LaFe3/4Ni1/4O3 was subjected to oxygen near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy for 300 K < T < 773 K. The spectra show in the pre-edge a small hole doped peak originating from Ni substitution. The relative spectral weight of this transition to the weight of the hybridized O(2p) - Fe(3d) transitions scales with T and has a maximum at around 600 K. The characteristic energies of the thermal activated spectral intensity and conductivity suggest that the concentration of charge transferred electrons from O(2p) to Ni(3d) increases and that the pre-edges account in part for t…
In this paper I discuss the electronic structure and properties of a specific, rather unconventional class of transition metal (TM) compounds, e.g. TM oxides, which formally have unusually high values of the oxidation state, or valence, of TM. In contrast to the typical situation, in this case the charge-transfer gap (excitation energy for the transfer of electrons from the ligands to the TM) is very small and may even become negative. As a result a profound modification of an electronic structure and of all the properties may take place: there appear holes in the oxygen p-bands (``self-doping…
Low-valence nickelates $-$ including infinite-layer (IL) and trilayer (TL) compounds $-$ are longstanding candidates for mimicking the high-temperature superconductivity of cuprates. A recent breakthrough in the field came with the discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped IL nickelates. Yet, the degree of similarity between low-valence nickelates and cuprates is the subject of a profound debate for which soft x-ray spectroscopy experiments at the Ni $L$- and O $K$-edge provided critical input. In this review, we will discuss the essential elements of the electronic structure of low-valance…
We report on the study of the response to high pressures of the electronic and magnetic properties of several Sm-based compounds, which span at ambient pressure the whole range of stable charge states between the divalent and the trivalent. Our nuclear forward scattering of synchrotron radiation and specific heat investigations show that in both golden SmS and SmB6 the pressure-induced insulator to metal transitions (at 2 and about 4-7 GPa, respectively) are associated with the onset of long-range magnetic order, stable up to at least 19 and 26 GPa, respectively. This long-range magnetic order…
We have investigated the electronic states of the uranium monochalcogenide US, which is a typical ferromagnetic uranium compound, using soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SX-PES). In early ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy studies, two peak structures of the U 5f states were observed and have been interpreted that one has an itinerant character around the Fermi level (EF) and the other located below EF has a character of localized U 5f electrons. In this study, the intrinsic bulk valence-band spectrum of US was first deduced by estimating the contribution of surface states to the vale…
We have investigated temperature-dependent behaviors of electronic structure and resistivity in a mixed-valent golden phase of SmS, based on the dynamical mean-field theory band structure calculations. Upon cooling, the coherent Sm 4$f$ bands are formed to produce the hybridization induced pseudogap near the Fermi level, and accordingly the topology of Fermi surface is changed to exhibit a Lifshitz-like transition. The surface states emerging in the bulk gap region are found to be not topologically protected states but just typical Rashba spin-polarized states, indicating that SmS is not a top…
We report the first comprehensive study of the high temperature form ($α$-phase) of iron disilicide. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and resistivity were performed on well characterized single crystals. With a nominal iron $d^6$ configuration, and a quasi-two dimensional crystal structure that strongly resembles that of LiFeAs, $α$-FeSi$_2$ is a potential candidate for unconventional superconductivity. Akin to LiFeAs, $α$-FeSi$_2$ does not develop any magnetic order, and we confirm its metallic state down to the lowest temperatures ($T$=1.8 K). However…
Electronic structure of pulsed laser deposited epitaxial LaVO3 (LVO) thin film grown on LaAlO3 (001) (LAO) substrate, has been studied at room temperature and at 130 K, which is below the structural (141 K) and magnetic transition temperatures (143 K) of single crystal LVO. Significant modification in spectral intensity, largely around the V 3d - O 2p hybridized region, is observed in valence band spectrum (VBS) of LVO film at 130 K. Resonant photoemission study at 130 K confirms the presence of charge transfer screened 3dnL (L: hole in the O 2p) final state along with the dominant 3dn-1 final…
