Here we calculate the dynamic susceptibility and dynamic correlation function in spin ice using the model of emergent magnetic monopoles. Calculations are based on a method originally suggested for the description of dynamic processes in water ice (non-equilibrium thermodynamics approach). We show that for zero temperature the dynamic correlation function reproduces the transverse dipole correlations (static correlation function) characteristic of spin ice in its ground state. At non-zero temperatures the dynamic correlation function includes an additional longitudinal component which decreases as the temperature decreases. Both terms (transverse and longitudinal) exhibit identical Debye-like dependences on frequency but with different relaxation times: the magnetic Coulomb interaction of monopoles reduces the longitudinal relaxation time with respect to the transverse one. We calculate the dielectric function for the magnetic monopole gas and discuss how the non-equilibrium thermodynamics approach exposes corrections to the Debye-Huckel theory of magnetic monopoles and the concept of "entropic charge".
We present an experimental determination of the isothermal magnetic susceptibility of the spin ice materials Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7 in the temperature range 1.8-300 K. The use of spherical crystals has allowed the accurate correction for demagnetizing fields and allowed the true bulk isothermal susceptibility X_T(T) to be estimated. This has been compared to a theoretical expression based on a Husimi tree approximation to the spin ice model. Agreement between experiment and theory is excellent at T > 10 K, but systematic deviations occur below that temperature. Our results largely resolve an ap…
Pyrochlores offer an ideal playground to investigate the magnetic ground state of frustrated magnetic systems. In this class of materials, competition between various magnetic interactions remains frustrated and prevents an ordered magnetic state at low temperatures. Tb2Sn2O7 has recently attracted significant attention due to its ordered spin-ice state. Additionally, in such systems, application of external magnetic field might result in exotic magnetic states. Our current investigation on Tb2Sn2O7 reveal the presence of a new phase associated with fifth order susceptibility at low temperatur…
Experimental data of the frequency-dependent ac susceptibility for the dipolar spin ice Dy2Ti2O7 has been analyzed by Monte Carlo simulations on the basis of the single-spin-flip Metropolis algorithm. We have directly evaluated the ac susceptibility by applying an ac magnetic field. We found that the simulated behaviors reproduces the experimental behavior of the ac susceptibility in the temperature range from 0.6 to 1.0 K, where dilute magnetic monopoles diffusively move. The conversion factor from simulation time to real time, i.e., the rate of hopping of monopoles to nearest-neighbor sites,…
The generalised longitudinal susceptibility $χ({\bf q}, ω)$ affords a sensitive measure of the spatial and temporal correlations of magnetic monopoles in spin ice. Starting with the monopole model, a mean field expression for $χ({\bf q}, ω)$ is derived as well as expressions for the mean square longitudinal field and induction at a point. Monopole motion is shown to be strongly correlated, and both spatial and temporal correlations are controlled by the dimensionless monopole density $x$ which defines the ratio of the magnetization relaxation rate and the monopole hop rate. Thermal effects and…
The pyrochlore Ho2Ge2O7 is a new highly correlated spin ice material. Physical property measurements including x-ray diffraction, dc susceptibility and ac susceptibility, confirm that it shares the distinctive characteristics of other known spin ices. Polarized neutron scattering measurements on a powder sample, combined with reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) refinements, give unique information about the spin ice state in Ho2Ge2O7. RMC refinements are used to fit the powder magnetic diffuse scattering and predict the single crystal magnetic scattering of Ho2Ge2O7, demonstrating consistency with spin …
We have studied the field-dependent ac magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of Dy2Ti2O7 spin ice along the [111] direction in the temperature range 1.8 K - 7 K. Our data reflect the onset of local spin ice order in the appearance of different field regimes. In particular, we observe a prominent feature at approximately 1.0 T that is a precursor of the low-temperature metamagnetic transition out of field-induced kagome ice, below which the kinetic constraints imposed by the ice rules manifest themselves in a substantial frequency-dependence of the susceptibility. Despite the relatively hi…
We have studied the thermodynamics of the stuffed spin ice material, Dy2(DyxTi2-x)O7-x/2, in which additional Dy3+ replace Ti4+ in the pyrochlore Dy2Ti2O7. Heat capacity measurements indicate that these materials lose the spin ice zero point entropy for x >= 0.3, sharply contrasting with results on the analogous Ho materials. A finite ac susceptibility is observed as T ~ 0 in both the Ho and Dy materials with x = 0.67, which suggests that spin fluctuations persist down to T ~ 0. We propose that both the entropy and susceptibility data may be explained as a result of domains of local pyrochlore…
We predict the non-linear non-equilibrium response of a "magnetolyte", the Coulomb fluid of magnetic monopoles in spin ice. This involves an increase of the monopole density due to the second Wien effect---a universal and robust enhancement for Coulomb systems in an external field---which in turn speeds up the magnetization dynamics, manifest in a non-linear susceptibility. Along the way, we gain new insights into the AC version of the classic Wien effect. One striking discovery is that of a frequency window where the Wien effect for magnetolyte and electrolyte are indistinguishable, with the …
We study a local ferromagnetic Ising model for classical spins on the trillium lattice. The ground state of this model features two spins out(/in) and one spin in(/out) on each triangle, and leads to a macroscopic ground state degeneracy. Our Monte Carlo simulations find a ground state entropy intermediate to that of spin ice on the kagome and pyrochlore lattices, suggesting that trillium spin ice is highly frustrated. To motivate the search for trillium spin ice, we calculate the magnetic susceptibility and structure factor. We note the qualitative resemblance of the susceptibility to previou…
A theory for frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility χ(ω) is developed for thermally activated magnetic monopoles in kagome ice. By mapping this system to a two-dimensional (2D) Coulomb gas and then to a sine-Gordon model, we have shown that the susceptibility has a scaling form χ(ω)/χ(0)={\cal F}(ω/ω_1), where the characteristic ω_1 is related to a charge correlation length between diffusively moving monopoles, and to the sine-Gordon principal breather. The dynamical scaling is universal among superfluid and superconducting films, and 2D XY magnets above Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions.
The quantum spin ice model applied to Tb2Ti2O7 predicts that magnetic fields applied along the [111] axis will induce a partial magnetization plateau [H. R. Molavian and M. J. P. Gingras, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 21, 172201 (2009)]. We test this hypothesis using ac magnetic susceptibility and muon-spin relaxation measurements, finding features at 15 and 65 mT agreeing with the predicted boundaries of the magnetization plateau. This suggests that Tb2Ti2O7 is well described by a quantum spin ice model with an effective exchange constant of Jeff = 0.17(1) K.

In their recent communication (Phys. Rev. B 64, 060406(R) (2001)) Cornelius and Gardner have reported the results of magnetization and susceptibility studies on single crystals of the pyrochlore Ho2Ti2O7. The observed field dependence of magnetization is totally unexpected, as it seems to suggest that the magnetic moments in this compound do not obey the 'ice-rule'. We have re-measured the magnetization curves for Ho2Ti2O7 single crystal for the three principal directions of an applied magnetic field and found nearly perfect agreement with the predictions for a nearest-neighbor spin-ice model.
The origin of the lowest-temperature anomaly reported several years ago using a polycrystalline sample of the spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 had remained unresolved. Here we finally clarify its origin by susceptibility measurements down to 65 mK using single crystals under accurate control of the magnetic fields in two independent directions. We demonstrate that the transition is induced under a subtle field combination that precisely cancel the nearest-neighbor spin interactions acting on the spins on the triangular lattice within the pyrochlore structure. Contrary to the other two fieldinduced t…
We present a mechanism of resistivity minimum in conduction electron systems coupled with localized moments, which is distinguished from the Kondo effect. Instead of the spin-flip process in the Kondo effect, electrons are elastically scattered by local spin correlations which evolve in a particular way under geometrical frustration as decreasing temperature. This is demonstrated by the cellular dynamical mean-field theory for a spin-ice type Kondo lattice model on a pyrochlore lattice. Peculiar temperature dependences of the resistivity, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility in the non-K…
Out-of-equilibrium investigation of strongly correlated materials deciphers the hidden equilibrium properties. Herein, we have investigated the out-of-equilibrium magnetic properties of polycrystalline Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7 spin ices. The experimental results show the emergence of magnetic field-induced anomalous hysteresis observed only in temperature/magnetic field-dependent ac susceptibility measurements. The observed memory effect (anomalous thermomagnetic hysteresis) strongly depends on the driving thermal and non-thermal variables. Contrary, in the absence of the magnetic field, dipolar …
We present single-crystal neutron-diffuse-scattering measurements with polarization analysis on the spin ice Ho2-xYxTi2O7 (x = 0, 0.3, and 1). At 2 K, the spin flip scattering patterns are typical of a nearest-neighbor spin ice and the effects of Y doping are seen in the width of the pinch points. At low-T, the spin flip patterns are characteristic of a dipolar spin ice and are unaffected by Y doping. In the non-spin flip channel, we observe the signature of strong antiferromagnetic correlations at the same T as the dipolar spin ice correlations appear in the spin flip channel. These experimen…
An important and continuing theme of modern solid state physics is the realization of exotic excitations in materials (e.g. quasiparticles) that have no analogy (or have not yet been observed) in the actual physical vacuum of free space. Although they are not fundamental particles, such quasiparticles do constitute the most basic description of the excited states of the "vacuum" in which they reside. In this regard the magnetic textures of the excited states of spin ices, magnetic pyrochlore oxides with dominant Ising interactions, are proposed to be modeled as effective magnetic charge monopo…
We report a positive muon spin relaxation and rotation (\muSR) study of the quantum spin ice materials Yb2Ti2O7 and Yb2Sn2O7 focusing on the low field response. In agreement with earlier reports, data recorded in small longitudinal fields evidence anomalously slow spin dynamics in the microsecond range below the temperature T_c at which the specific heat displays an intense peak, namely T_c = 0.24 K and 0.15 K, respectively, for the two systems. We found that slow dynamics extends above T_c up to at least 0.7 K for both compounds. The conventional dynamical Gaussian Kubo-Toyabe model describes…
Temperature dependencies of magnetic susceptibility in a trigonal single crystal of erbium aluminum borate were measured in the temperature range of 2 - 15 K at the external field of 100 Oe applied along the second- and third-order crystallographic axes. Analysis of the experimental data allows to identify the Van Vleck contribution to the susceptibility. The influence of spin correlations on the magnetic susceptibility has been identified. It has been estimate the negative paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature.

We have studied the effects of electron correlation on Van Vleck susceptibility ($χ_{\rm{VV}}$) in transition metal compounds. A typical crossover behavior is found for the correlation effect on $χ_{\rm{VV}}$ as sweeping spin-orbit interaction, $λ$. For a small $λ$, orbital fluctuation plays a dominant role in the correlation enhancement of $χ_{\rm{VV}}$; however, the enhancement rate is rather small. In contrast, for an intermediate $λ$, $χ_{\rm{VV}}$ shows a substantial increase, accompanied by the development of spin fluctuation. We will discuss the behavior of $χ_{\rm{VV}}$ in association …
We report the low-temperature magnetothermal properties and spin dynamics of a mixed pyrochlore, Dy2GaSbO7 through the coordination of measurements of dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, and heat capacity, and CF computation. In Dy2GaSbO7, the spins freeze at temperature Tice = 3.1 K, corresponding to dynamical spin-freezing into a disordered state in compliance with the spin-ice rules, but with enhanced zero-point entropy, unlike cannonical dipolar spin-ice materials, Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7, due to random disorder and varied chemical pressure of B-site (GaSb tetrahedra) ions.
We report that the lattice constant of Dy$_2$Ge$_{2-x}$Si$_x$O$_7$ ($x=0, 0.02, 0.08, 0.125$) can be systematically reduced by substituting the non-magnetic germanium ion in the cubic pyrochlore oxide with silicon. A multi-anvil high-pressure synthesis was performed up to 16 GPa and 1100 $^\circ$C to obtain polycrystalline samples in a solid-state reaction. Measurements of magnetization, ac susceptibility, and heat capacity reveal the typical signatures of a spin-ice phase. From the temperature shift of the peaks, observed in the temperature-dependent heat capacity, we deduce an increase of th…
We present a methodology for probing the details of electronic susceptibility through minimally-invasive nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. Specifically, we classify electron-mediated long-range interactions in an ensemble of nuclear spins by revealing their effect on simple spin echo experiments. We find that pulse strength and applied field orientation dependence of these spin echo measurements resolves the spatial extent and anisotropy of electronic spin susceptibility. This work provides an alternate explanation to NMR results in superconducting and magnetically-ordered systems. The me…
At low temperatures, a spin ice enters a Coulomb phase - a state with algebraic correlations and topologically constrained spin configurations. In Ho2Ti2O7, we have observed experimentally that this process is accompanied by a non-standard temperature evolution of the wave vector dependent magnetic susceptibility, as measured by neutron scattering. Analytical and numerical approaches reveal signatures of a crossover between two Curie laws, one characterizing the high temperature paramagnetic regime, and the other the low temperature topologically constrained regime, which we call the spin liqu…
Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is at present the cleanest example of a spin-ice material. Previous theoretical and experimental work on the first-order transition between the kagome-ice and the fully polarized state has been taken as a validation for the dipolar spin-ice model. Here we investigate in further depth this phase transition using ac-susceptibility and dc-magnetization, and compare this results with Monte-Carlo simulations and previous magnetization and specific heat measurements. We find signatures of an intermediate state between the kagome-ice and full polarization. This signatures are absent…
We report the synthesis of powder and single-crystal samples of the cerium pyrohafnate and their characterization using neutron diffraction, thermogravimetry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We evaluate the amount of non-magnetic Ce$^{4+}$ defects and use this result to interpret the spectrum of crystal-electric field transitions observed using inelastic neutron scattering. The analysis of these single-ion transitions indicates the dipole-octupole nature of the ground state doublet and a significant degree of spin-lattice coupling. The single-ion properties calculated from the crystal-electr…
We have studied the field induced magnetic structures in the spin liquid Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, in a wide temperature (0.3$<$$T$$<$270 K) and field (0$<$$H$$<$7 T) range, by single crystal neutron diffraction with $\bf{H}$ // [110] axis. We combined unpolarized neutron data with polarized ones, analyzed within the local susceptibility model. A ferromagnetic-like structure with $\bf{k}$ = 0 propagation vector is induced, whose local order at low field and low temperature is akin to spin ice. The four Tb ions separate in $α$ and $β$ chains having different values of the magnetic moments, which is qu…
Here we study the statistical properties of two-dimensional spin ice in its ground state by the Monte Carlo simulation method. Using a new sampling algorithm, we show that the short-range ice rule in two dimensions gives rise to long-range but not dipole-like correlations, to non-Gaussian probability density function for magnetization and to non-extensive conditional entropy (entropy with given value of magnetization).
In classical and quantum spin ice, rod-like features appear in the neutron scattering structure factor when the pinchpoints characteristic of classical spin ice get washed out. We show that these features do not indicate the absence of spin correlations between planes perpendicular to the rods. Rather, they arise because unpolarised neutron scattering is largely insensitive to the three-dimensional correlations which are present throughout. We present two very simple models which exhibit a pristine incarnation of such scattering rods. This provides a physical picture for their appearance, eluc…

Spin correlations in an interacting electron liquid are studied in the high-frequency limit and in both two and three dimensions. The third-moment sum rule is evaluated and used to derive exact limiting forms (at both long- and short-wavelengths) for the spin-antisymmetric local-field factor, $\lim_{ω\to \infty}G_-({\bf q, ω})$. In two dimensions $\lim_{ω\to \infty}G_-({\bf q, ω})$ is found to diverge as $1/q$ at long wavelengths, and the spin-antisymmetric exchange-correlation kernel of time-dependent spin density functional theory diverges as $1/q^2$ in both two and three dimensions. These s…
We provide a fully analytical microscopic theory for the proton correlations in water ice $I_h$. We compute the full diffuse elastic neutron scattering structure factor, which we find to be in excellent quantitative agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. It is also in remarkable qualitative agreement with experiment, in the absence of any fitting parameters. Our theory thus provides a tractable analytical starting point to account for more delicate features of the proton correlations in water ice. In addition, it directly determines an effective field theory of water ice as a topological phas…
We present high-resolution single crystal time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on the candidate quantum spin liquid pyrochlore Tb2Ti2O7 at low temperature and in a magnetic field. At ~70 mK and in zero field, Tb2Ti2O7 reveals diffuse magnetic elastic scattering at (1/2,1/2,1/2) positions in reciprocal space, consistent with short-range correlated regions based on a two-in, two-out spin ice configuration on a doubled conventional unit cell. This elastic scattering is separated from very low-energy magnetic inelastic scattering by an energy gap of ~0.06-0.08 meV. The elastic signal dis…
We calculate the temperature dependence of the correlation length xi and the uniform susceptibility chi_0 of the frustrated J1-J2 square-lattice Heisenberg ferromagnet in the collinear stripe phase using Green-function technique. The height chi_{max} and the position T(chi_{max}) of the maximum in the chi_0(T) curve exhibit a characteristic dependence on the frustration parameter J2/|J1|, which is well described by power laws, chi_{max}=a(J2-J2^c)^{-nu} and T(chi_{max})=b(J_2-J_2^c), where J2^c = 0.4 and nu is of the order of unity. The correlation length diverges at low temperatures as xi \pro…
We derive an effective $Z_2$ gauge theory to describe the quantum kagome ice (QKI) state that has been observed by Carrasquilla $\textit{et. al.}$ in Monte Carlo studies of the $S = 1/2$ kagome XYZ model in a Zeeman field. The numerical results on QKI are consistent with, but do not confirm or rule out, the hypothesis that it is a $Z_2$ spin liquid. Our effective theory allows us to explore this hypothesis and make a striking prediction for future numerical studies, namely that symmetry-protected vison zero modes arise at lattice disclination defects, leading to a Curie defect term in the spin…
We present the structural and magnetic properties of a new compound family, Mg$_2$RE$_3$Sb$_3$O$_{14}$ (RE = Gd, Dy, Er), with a hitherto unstudied frustrating lattice, the "tripod kagome" structure. Susceptibility (ac, dc) and specific heat exhibit features that are understood within a simple Luttinger-Tisza type theory. For RE = Gd, we found long ranged order (LRO) at 1.65 K, which is consistent with a 120 $^{\circ}$ structure, demonstrating the importance of diople interactions for this 2D Heisenberg system. For RE = Dy, LRO at 0.37 K is related to the "kagome spin ice (KSI)" physics for a …
Physical properties of a pyrohafnate compound Pr2Hf2O7 have been investigated by ac magnetic susceptibility χ_ ac(T), dc magnetic susceptibility χ(T), isothermal magnetization M(H) and heat capacity C_p(T) measurements on polycrystalline as well as single crystal samples combined with high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD) for structural characterization and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to determine the crystal field energy level scheme and wave functions. Synchrotron XRD data confirm the ordered cubic pyrochlore (Fd-3m) structure without any noticeable site mixing or oxygen…
By using the determinant Quantum Monte Carlo method, the magnetic and pairing correlation of the Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot$yH$_{2}$O system are studied within the Hubbard model on a bilayer triangular lattice. The temperature dependence of spin correlation function and pairing susceptibility with several kinds of symmetries at different electron fillings and inter layer coupling terms are investigated. It is found that the system shows an antiferromagnetic correlation around the half filling, and the $fn$-wave pairing correlation dominates over other kinds of pairing symmetry in the low doping reg…
Based on the linear response of the fermion propagator with respect to an external field, we first derive a model-independent expression for the staggered spin susceptibility in which the influence of the full pseudoscalar vertex function is included. This expression for the staggered spin susceptibility is quite different from that given in the previous literature. The numerical values of the staggered spin susceptibility are calculated within the framework of the Dyson-Schwinger approach. Our numerical result shows that the nonperturbative dressing effects on the fermion propagator is very i…
The temperature dependence of the paramagnetic susceptibility of the iron pnictide superconductor KFe2As2 and its connection with the spectral properties of that material is investigated by a combination of density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Unlike other iron pnictide parent compounds where the typical oxidation state of iron is 2, the formal valence of Fe in KFe2As2 is 2.5, corresponding to an effective doping with 0.5 hole per iron atom compared to, for example, BaFe2As2. This shifts the chemical potential and thereby re…
We report the optimized conditions for growing the high quality single crystals of candidate quantum spin-ice Pr2Hf2O7 using the optical floating-zone method. Large single crystals of Pr2Hf2O7 have been grown under different growth conditions using a four-mirror type optical floating-zone furnace and their microscopic structural differences have been probed by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (SXRD). The SXRD data reveal that the crystals grown under fowing argon (~ 2 L/h) atmosphere with slightly off-stoichiometric (optimized) starting composition yields the highest quality cryst…
We present an experimental study of the quantum spin ice candidate pyrochlore coumpound \przr\ by means of magnetization measurements, specific heat and neutron scattering up to 12 T and down to 60 mK. When the field is applied along the $[111]$ and $[1\bar{1}0]$ directions, ${\bf k}=0$ field induced structures settle in. We find that the ordered moment rises slowly, even at very low temperature, in agreement with macroscopic magnetization. Interestingly, for $H \parallel [1\bar{1}0]$, the ordered moment appears on the so called $α$ chains only. The spin excitation spectrum is essentially {\it…
A magnetic monopole in spin ice is a novel quasiparticle excitation in condensed matter physics, and we found that the ac frequency dependent magnetic susceptibility $χ(ω)$ in the two-dimensional (2D) spin ice (so-called kagomé ice) of Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ shows a single scaling form. This behavior can be understood in terms of the dynamical scaling law for 2D Coulomb gas (CG) systems [Phys. Rev. B 90, 144428 (2014)], characterized by the charge correlation length $ξ(\propto1/\sqrt{ω_1})$, where $ω_{1}$ is a characteristic frequency proportional to the peak position of the imaginary part of $χ(ω)…
The magnetic susceptibility of the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor hopping is investigated using the diagram technique developed for the case of strong correlations. In this technique a power series in the hopping constant is used. At half-filling the calculated zero-frequency susceptibility and the square of the site spin reproduce adequately results of Monte Carlo simulations. Also in agreement with numerical simulations no evidence of ferromagnetic correlations was found in the considered range of electron concentrations $0.8\alt\bar{n}\alt 1.2$ for the repulsi…
We present numerical studies of dipolar spin ice in the presence of a magnetic field slightly tilted away from the [111] axis. We find a first-order transition from a kagome ice to a $\mathbf{q}=$X state when the external field is tilted toward the $[11\bar{2}]$ direction. This is consistent with the anomalous critical scattering previously observed in the neutron scattering experiment on the spin ice material $\textrm{Ho}_{2}\textrm{Ti}_{2}\textrm{O}_{7}$ in a tilted field [Nat. Phys. 3, 566 (2007)]. We show that this ordering originates from the antiferromagnetic alignment of spin chains on …
The magnetic susceptibility and spin-spin correlation of the double-exchange model for doped manganites are investigated through the Monte Carlo calculations on the three-dimensional lattice model. Deviations of the susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss behavior above the ferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_c$ seem to indicate a formation of local ferromagnetic clusters in the vicinity of $T_c$, which is consistent with recent electron paramagnetic resonance experiments for La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$. A further analysis of the spin-spin correlations show the ferromagnetic cluster size to be t…
We report vibrating coil magnetometry of the spin ice system Ho2Ti2O7 down to ~0.04 K for magnetic fields up to 5 T applied parallel to the [111] axis. History dependent behavior emerges below T*_0 ~ 0.6 K near zero magnetic field, in common with other spin ice compounds. In large magnetic fields we observe a magnetization plateau followed by a hysteretic metamagnetic transition. The temperature dependence of the coercive fields as well as the susceptibility calculated from the magnetization identify the metamagnetic transition as a line of first order transitions terminating in a critical end…
Neutron scattering measurements on the pyrochlore magnet Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ reveal an unusual crystal field splitting of its lowest $J$=5/2 multiplet, such that its ground state doublet is composed of m$_J$=$\pm$3/2, giving these doublets a dipole - octupole (DO) character with local Ising anisotropy. Its magnetic susceptibility shows weak antiferromagnetic correlations with $θ_{CW}$=-0.4(2)K, leading to a naive expectation of an All-In, All-Out ordered state at low temperatures. Instead our low energy inelastic neutron scattering measurements show a dynamic quantum spin ice state, with suppres…
We report magnetization and ac susceptibility of single crystals of the spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7. Saturated moments at 1.8 K along the charasteristic axes [100] and [110] agree with the expected values for an effective ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor Ising pyrochlore with local <111> anisotropy, where each magnetic moment is constrained to obey the `ice-rule'. At high enough magnetic fields along the [111] axis, the saturated moment exhibits a beaking of the ice-rule; it agrees with the value expected for a three-in one-out spin configuration. Assuming the realistic magnetic interaction betwe…
A relaxation-function theory for the dynamic spin susceptibility in the $t$--$J$ model is presented. By a sum-rule-conserving generalized mean-field approximation (GMFA), the two-spin correlation functions of arbitrary range, the staggered magnetization, the uniform static susceptibility, and the antiferromagnetic correlation length are calculated in a wide region of hole doping and temperaturs. A good agreement with available exact diagonalization (ED) data is found. The correlation length is in reasonable agreement with neutron-scattering experiments on La_{2-δ}Sr_δ)CuO_4. Going beyond the G…
We present a parametric study of the diffuse magnetic scattering at (1/2,1/2,1/2) positions in reciprocal space, ascribed to a frozen antiferromagnetic spin ice state in single crystalline Tb2Ti2O7. Our high-resolution neutron scattering measurements show that the elastic (-0.02 meV < E < 0.02 meV) (1/2,1/2,1/2) scattering develops strongly below ~275 mK, and correlates with the opening of a spin gap of ~0.06-0.08 meV over most of the Brillouin zone. The concomitant low-lying magnetic spin excitations are weakly dispersive and appear to soften near the (1/2,1/2,1/2) wave vector at 80 mK. The n…
The isolated susceptibility $χ_{\rm I}$ may be defined as a (non-thermodynamic) average over the canonical ensemble, but while it has often been discussed in the literature, it has not been clearly measured. Here, we demonstrate an unambiguous measurement of $χ_{\rm I}$ at avoided nuclear-electronic level crossings in a dilute spin ice system, containing well-separated holmium ions. We show that $χ_{\rm I}$ quantifies the superposition of quasi-classical spin states at these points, and is a direct measure of state concurrence and populations.
When degenerate states are separated by large energy barriers, the approach to thermal equilibrium can be slow enough that physical properties are defined by the thermalization process rather than the equilibrium. The exploration of thermalization pushes experimental boundaries and provides refreshing insights into atomic scale correlations and processes that impact steady state dynamics and prospects for realizing solid state quantum entanglement. We present a comprehensive study of magnetic relaxation in Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ based on frequency-dependent susceptibility measurements and neutron d…
We have studied the Tb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ frustrated magnet by neutron diffraction under isotropic pressure of 4.6 GPa, combined with uniaxial pressure of 0.3 GPa, in the temperature range 0.06 K$<$T$<$100 K. Magnetic order persists under pressure but the ordered spin ice structure stabilized at ambient pressure below 1.3 K partly transforms into an antiferromagnetic one. The long range ordered moment at 0.06 K is reduced under pressure, which is interpreted by a pressure induced enhancement of the spin liquid fluctuations. Above the ordering transition, short range spin correlations are affected …
We have performed AC susceptibility and DC magnetic relaxation measurements on the spin ice system Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ down to 0.08 K. The relaxation time of the magnetization has been estimated below 2 K down to 0.08 K. The spin dynamics of Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is well described by using two relaxation times ($τ_{\rm S}$ (short time) and $τ_{\rm L}$ (long time)). Both $τ_{\rm S}$ and $τ_{\rm L}$ increase on cooling. Assuming the Arrhenius law in the temperature range 0.5-1 K, we obtained an energy barrier of 9 K. Below 0.5 K, both $τ_{\rm S}$ and $τ_{\rm L}$ show a clear deviation from the thermal…
We study exactly both the ground-state fidelity susceptibility and bond-bond correlation function in the Kitaev honeycomb model. Our results show that the fidelity susceptibility can be used to identify the topological phase transition from a gapped A phase with Abelian anyon excitations to a gapless B phase with non-Abelian anyon excitations. We also find that the bond-bond correlation function decays exponentially in the gapped phase, but algebraically in the gapless phase. For the former case, the correlation length is found to be $1/ξ=2\sinh^{-1}[\sqrt{2J_z -1}/(1-J_z)]$, which diverges ar…
